is it possible to record more than one instrument at the same time but have them on seperate tracks? if so, what would i use to do this?

I don't see why not, if you use a tape recorder.
Other than that, I think you have to mix them together on the tracks.

You mean instead of recording a track at a time, record all at once as a full band but have the tracks separate?
Most multi-track recorders have 4+ inputs depending on whether it's a 4, 8 or 16 track.
To do it on a PC, you'd need a soundcard that has multiple inputs.

Of course you need two inputs, Use headphones to monitor, if your recording on an old tape machine you may need to pan one track all the way left and the other track all the way right while recording, you can adjust the panning as you please later. If youre using software just make sure you select the correct input and check levels for both tracks while your try peak outputs from each instrument. You can get bleed over especially if your not using headphones to monitor.
