Im pretty sure theres a free version of pro tools.....

Protools isn't a very good program in my opinion, especialy not the free version.

Search for audacity on google, it is free and great.

The free protools is alright for mixing/mastering, for recording it's a bag of crap.

Yeah protools is really just a program for Studio engineers to mix the final piece rather than record. I'm not a fan of protools personally, but I'm a multitrack fanatic so there you go.

Plogue Bidule: http://www.plogue.com/bidule
A virtual studio. Handles MIDI and streaming audio. Not great for recording, more for processing and mixing.

Audacity's website is http://audacity.sf.net/

A design somewhat similar to Cubase, but with fewer features etc. Pretty good for that stuff.

There is a free version of ProTools (http://www.digidesign.com) available, but only for Mac OS X or Windows 98/2000.

Cycle of 5th Sound Engine : http://www.cycleof5th.com/en/index.htm . Designed to be a mastering suite, it's pretty handing for general editing of one track @ a time. However, it's fairly unstable on my XP Pro system.
