Hey,

I like recording stuff directly onto my computer, because my instruments are right here in the room.

But I use sound recorder (yes, you may laugh), and its really no fun at all.

Any FREE programs I can download so that I can directly record and store the files on my hard drive?

In my opinion, Yes.
There is a host of plugins you can download for it on the website too.

Cubase and Sonar are other alternatives. Audacity can become quite limited at times.
