View Full Version : What to play?

Bit of a hopeless newbie question but I'm hoping that someone out there can take a couple of minutes to help (nice place you seem to have here by the way).
I'm a (not particularly good) bass player who's been playing for sheer enjoyment for a couple of years. Every Friday night in the pub I try to convince a few mates (couple of guitarists and a pianist) that we should put a small set together (impress party guests/family, etc, nothing too serious) and every Friday night we agree what a good idea it is but, as we all tend to play music heavily geared towards our own instruments, we never seem to be able to find/agree any tracks that would suit our set up.
So does anyone have any suggestions on what would be good to play. We all tend to lean towards the rock genre but any and all suggestions gratefully received.
Cheers
Adam

what styles of rock do you like? Thats something your going to have to talk with your band about.

I was wondering about the same thing!
Me (guitar) and two of my friends (bass and piano) never figure out what to play when we get together

Drop your egos.
Each instrument is important, you don't need to be playing a solo to be playing a big part, You are each a different colour in a masterful painting, It doesn't matter if the final piece has more red than blue, because without the blue, the red would be boring.

A good solution is to pick a few songs that puts each instrument in the spotlight. Like, for guitar you can play some Hendrix, bass you can play some Jaco Pastorius or something, piano you can play Deep Purple (bad examples, I know), etc. Or you can take K's advice.

Thanks for the replies.
There are no real egos to drop just a lack of musical knowledge/breadth really. If we're going to play a limited set we want to make sure everyone gets some part to play.
I know it's is a pretty ambiguous request but I'm hoping somebody's got a track or two in their head that they think would fit us.
Unclebob - thanks for the Deep Purple idea, haven't listened to to them for years and had almost forgotten they existed.
Thanks
Adam
