I'm going to do this a little differently than my usual track-by-track. It's my first time doing the album as a whole, so let me know what you think.

The Red Chord is a reletively new band in the music world. Formed in 1999 in Revere, Massachusetts, the band has only released this one disc to date. All of what I just said is code for: They're newish and I can't find a history.

Some debate can be placed in the genre. They seem to blend hardcore and death metal. But I've heard them called things like tech metal and math metal while metal-archives has them listed as technical grind influenced metalcore. But for God's sake, let's pay attention to the review and the music and just let a few words I put in the title alone.

The album...
The Red Chord is one of the few bands in this genre I like. The hardcore scene in my area is spreading like a brushfire but for the most part I have been able to resist it. This, however, is one of the few bands I like. They aren't (what I'de like to think) your traditional aggressive yet random sounding hardcore. These guys make a good blend of hardcore and death metal. The music itself is much more structured and technical than other hardcore bands I've heard. While they still do have the chaotic and overly aggressive sound, the obvious presence of deep, growling death metal vocals off sets the music.

The vocals are always unpredictable. While usually staying with the deep often times barking screams, once in a while Guy slips in some high pitch shrieking. In fact, he does it often. But the vocals themselves do not make the music. The instruments blend extremely well together. The guitars retain a steady constant sound. Most of the time they produce some rhythmic and extemely heavy power chords, but often they randomly slip in some pinch harmonics to add a feeling of random chaos. Lead riffs and licks are rare in some songs but blatantly obvious in others - occasionally you may spot some but ultimately they stick with downtuned brutal riffs in some songs, but if you're paying attention you'll notice that they do incorperate some random scales. But the others remind me of many brutal death bands I love oh so much. The bass, as expected, is rarely heard. Most of the bass lines are just guitar-hugging rhythms unfortunately. Obviously the basslines are solid enough to add a heavy low end to the music but don't expect any mad crazy lead bass work. There are a few songs that break for a few second bass solo but Weeks is no Les Claypool. The drums I find to be quite cool. The drums are one of the most consistently unconsistent instruments on the record. If anything is random about their stuff, it's the drumming. Switching from double bass to blast beats to snare rolls to powerful beats with a lot of 'cymbalism' kept me listening on an instrumental level. Rpetitive is the last thing that comes to mind, since every several seconds Fickeiser is doing something different. 'Tis quite crazy.

All in all, this was an impressive debut I think. The music is fairly diverse when you think about it. Tracks like Nihilist are very hardcore with randome guitar playing and shrieking vocals, and even a brief break for the bass. But other songs, such as Catalepsy, couldn't have been heavier - insane drumming ranging from blast beats to double bass, low pitch heavy as hell guitar riffs and growling vocals dominate. It has something for all kinds of people. But overall it's the tracks that combine both that are the most interesting. Songs such as the minute and fifty second epic L Formation begin with brutal drumming/guitar playing and deep vocals but the alternate with random scales and shrieking. There's even a clean guitar section.

Not only is the music itself interesting, but so is the way they utilize sounds that accent their music in a freakish way. With a hilarious intro, Dreaming in Dog Years was the first song I heard and got me hooked. The depressing electronic sounds of the intro to That Certain Special Ugly seems to help achieve their intended sound, producing a morbid atmosphere. The odd static sounds, which almost resemble a broken radio transmition, sound very dark and death-oriented. Four minutes of this horror show follows the track Sixteen Bit Fingerprint.

But redundant rage and confusion is not the only emotion displayed in this album. The death metal highlight Sixteen Bit Fingerprint is one of the most impressive songs I've heard in the genre period. Brutal heaviness is complimented with slower sections. There are many flowing melodic riffs present giving a saddening sound - one which I have grown to appreciate. Clean guitar rhythm riffs are riddled throughout the album producing a slight breather from the sheer brutality of it. The song Breed the Cancer even possesses some sort of a psychological atmosphere. The intro is haunting with some crazy guitar noises. But if it weren't for the vocals, this song would be purely 100% metal.

To conclude...
A fusion like this I have not heard often. The hardcore/death metal combo hits me in the right place. The album has so many dimensions beyond the average aggression that it is an interesting listen on so many levels. All instruments are played exactly how they should've been and sampling was perfected where it was needed. Any aggressive music fan should check this out - if I like than many others may be converted as well.

Good review, I'll check them out

I know what you mean about the hardcore scene, pretty much every band at our school is a hardcore except for a few.

Yeah, I generally don't like the genre at all...but these guys and Between the Buried and Me seem to strike a chord with me.

And judging by your profile location, we're very very, so I'm not surprised that hardcore dominates your area as well.

I've only heard their songs off purevolume and I think they're really good. They're one of the few hardcore+metal bands I like. Good review.

This is a great CD but after touring with nothing new for song long it seriously got played out, thank god Clients is coming out next year. Dreaming In Dog Years is definately the best track on the album. It's too bad Mike couldn't do the red chord AND beyond the sixth seal anymore.

Nice review. I've heard Toozey mention them once, so they must be decent...or brutal, one of the two.

edit: GOOD GOD, I just heard some samples, and the are brutal and decent.

What an awesome name and cover art for such a heavy band................

I'm glad so many people agree with me. I think this band is incredible - and yes, both brutal and very decent.

And I'm assuming Clients is...a new album from these guys?

One of, if not my favourite genre-band.

Very very cool group. They are less varied than BTBAM but have a stronger focus and tighter grooves.

Good review dude.

An absolutely amazing band. Right up there with BTBAM and Glass Casket.

Awesome band. Good review, I prefer this to a track-by-track.

I don't understand why people make the hardcore relation though, there really isn't any. Just another metal band that isn't pure death being tagged with hardcore as an alternative label, I guess.

My guess is that it might have to do with popularity.

Hardcore>>>>>>Death metal when it comes to popularity in the United States.

This to me is Death/Grind with the odd experimental tendency.

I always related these guys with the hardcore genre because around here that's what they are. I've never actually heard them called anything other than hardcore, so...this genre stuff is mostly new to me. And I don't know who Glass Casket is but I'm checking them out too.

Bartender, are you going to fix the emberassing typo in the title or what?

This band are really good, I've just gotten the album again after getting my new PC and its getting many listens.

I really like the track Dreaming In Dog Years. I think they definately fuse the best parts of Grind, Hardcore and Extreme Metal.
