Brand new Darkthrone! Woot. This really is a good album, considering most veteran metal bands these days are releasing, shall we say, sub-par efforts. Darkthrone are generally known to have two phases in their career (well, three, if you include the death metal Soulside Journey) which is A Blaze in the Northern Sky -> Transilvanian Hunger phase and the Panzerfaust -> onwards era. This is quite possibly their finest effort of this phase. Nothing will ever beat Transilvanian Hunger or Under a Funeral Moon considered by many two of the finest black metal releases ever, but this album surely tries. They have pretty much stuck to the same formula as the previous album Hate Them, but improved on it. They’ve even included a great rock song on here, Sjakk Matt Desu Krist, just like they did on Hate Them with Det Svarter Na. Rockin’.
The differences between the two phases that they are in are simple. The earlier stuff was fast, non melodic (see Darkthrone – Transilvanian Hunger review (http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=208675) and Darkthrone – A Blaze in the Northern Sky review (http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=149758)) and their later stuff is slowed down a bit, with a little bit more melody in places.
Another thing that Darkthrone are known for is their extremely lo-fi production. A few humourous ways have been suggested as to how they do actually record (through an answering machine is probably the best one I’ve heard) You either like this is hate this, personally I find it suits the music quite nicely, and of course adds to the kvlt atmosphere. It is, however, much better production than earlier Darkthrone.
Looking at the songs now, Order of the Ominous is a really cool track by someone called Lrz, who I really have no idea about, apparently he helped out on Hate Them too. This is a great opening track, a really menacing sort of ambience track, with a hell of a lot of bass. Information Wants to be Syndicated is a nice old school Darkthrone track, very fast, with great vocals and a nice riff, a highlight of the album. The next track is Sjakk Matt Jesu Krist has a great intro, and as said before a really excellent rock song. It’s very fun to listen to. Straightening Sharks in Heaven is another slow track, typical later Darkthrone here, great chord changes, and excellent gutteral vocals, for a black metal man. It’s a bit repetitive though, not the best track on the album. Another slow one up next in Alle Gegen Alle, it gets good towards the end, there is a great atmosphere in this song. Man Tenker Sitt, apart from the hilarious title, really is a good track, one of the best riffs, and nice old school vocals. Another highlight. The middle section of this is godly. Sacrificing to the God of Doubt has a really great intro. Again, the middle section really is great, this isn’t really a favourite track of mine though. Hate is the Law is another great old school track, sounding remarkably similar to Len Hall Med Flesk Og Mjod off the [/I]Transilvanian Hunger[/I] album. I really enjoy the vocals, Nocturno Culto sure can do a lot with his voice. It’s a very fast track, highly recommended. The final track, Rawness Obsolete has a great troo atmosphere to it, but is rather a slow, boring, repetitive six minute listen.
Recommended tracks: Because I’m such a early Darkthrone fanboy, I find that Information Wants to be Syndicated and Hate is the Law are my favourite tracks, but these are not good indicators of new Darkthrone. So, the tracks that best represent the new Darkthrone sound is probably Man Tenker Sitt and Alle Gegen Alle.
My rating? Probably a 3.5/5, their best effort since Panzerfaust. If you like slow black metal, it’s highly recommended that you pick this beast up. :smoke:
