a few weeks ago i was messing around and i played a chord progression that i thought would be great for my rock band, it goes E, G, D, A

listened to green day - boulevard of broken dreams, and realised its the same as the chord progression in this song, im gutted, because now i cant use my song right?

what should i do?

If it doesn't sound the same and has a unique rhythm, no one will even know. If you end up with the exact same rhythm, melody, and tone as they use in their song, it's going to be really obvious that it's the same chord progression.

its true that chord progression has been used a million times. its one of those classic ones. but if you're going to use it, the important thing is to make it unique by adding your own little fills etc. this also livens it up a little. :smoke:

i know this is a songwriting forum, but you're probably better putting this post in the guitar forums.

play it anyway...your style(provided it's different from theirs) will make it your own

There is almost no way that a simple chord progression would not have been used before. In fact, I'm sure that Green Day have used it themselves countless times. You could listen to a song by almost any band, and you would find that progression.

Just don't deliberately take a chord progession from someone, but otherwise its all good.

don't worry about it

often the best songs have really simple, and commonly used chord progressions. its what you do with the the rhythm and melody line that makes it original.

hehe i just realised the first sort of song i wrote, aged 14, used that chord progression in the verse!(and it definately doesn't sound like green day!)

lol cool, we're going to be a hardish rock band anyway so thats not the same kind of style, shouldn't be too obvious. thanks
