You mean the one filled by the so-called "reality" TV band?

Yeah.... I haven't really watched Battle for Ozzfest, but just because it's MTV produced, I'll assume ANYONE would be better than whoever MTV chooses, since MTV doesn't know jack-sh!t about metal.

War Ensemble, iirc, is a song that basically mocks war and points out all the bad things about it, or something to that effect, so it's anti-war.

My all time favorite riff from a Slayer song is ''Ghosts Of War''

Right after the lyrics ''I...seal your fate'' at 3:07 to 3:33. It's pretty simple guitar and drums but the symbol makes the vibe \m/

It makes my hair stand up-right.

That CD took some time to grow on me. At first I only liked "Disciple" and "God Send Death" but eventually the rest of the songs grew on me, well...except "Deviance." I'm not the biggest fan of that song. My fave is still "Disciple" mostly because I find it the most fun to sing (scream?) along to. It was a shame I hadn't heard the song before I went to their concert because it was the first one they played :(. That was one energetic show, and when they played RIB in it's entirety...that was just pure gold! Anyway, SLAYER RULES!

Touring i wouldn't mind...

However, i hope they stop making music.

Slayer were good (VERY good) back in the day...however, their albums have slowly become less and less brilliant.

If they bust out with a new style, it may be good.

I wouldn't go that far in saying that but their sound is pretty straight forward.

You could even say that they just have two types of song

1. Fast - e.g. Angel Of Death, Necrophobic
2. Mid-paced and more melodic - e.g. South Of Heaven, Skeletons Of Society.

What do you all think of Tom's bass playing?

KittensInMicrowaves
04-30-2005, 09:38 AM
I dunno...i think they kinda reproduced the same album over and over again.

They have actually varied their sound quite a bit with each album....

Show No Mercy was balls out fast start to finish, with probably their best soloing work, or at least, most organized soloing....

Hell Awaits, they increased the length of the songs, and the production quality was shoddy, so it has a very different sound than the rest of their stuff

Reign in Blood, it came together in the thrash masterpiece...

South of Heaven, they slowed it down and added melody

Seasons in the Abyss, they speeded it back up and kept the melody

Divine Intervention, they went for a heavier sound, Tom's vocals got more intense, and the album had a more "modern" feel

Diablous in Musica, they added, dare I say, nu-metallish vibes

GHUA, I only listened to a few times, (i have a ****ty copy of it) but it appears to sound most similar to Divine Intervention, but it is their worst album for sure......

Toms Bass playing is nothing special at all. There's no parts to any Slayer songs where I'll think "Hey, that's some nice Basswork" cause there never is. He follows the Guitars nicely, but aside from that I don't rate him highly.

Everyone rates Seasons highly, but I actually like it the least outside of Diabolus and the new one..... I just don't think it had the strong songs the prior four albums and Divine Intervention did.

The title track is actually one of my least favorite Slayer songs, even though some people love it. I also find that many people on here own only Seasons and RIB, thinking those are the two best Slayer albums

I didn't know they covered Hell Awaits! That's really cool! I know they covered Fear of the Dark by Iron Maiden and did a really good job. It's not like the original. stevo_13

I think Dave Lombardo is a better drummer than Paul Bostaph however they are both quite good. I like Dave Mobardo because the drumming on albums like Show no Mercy and Reign in Blood (2 best slayer albums ever) is more infleuntal, creative, and all around better than the albums where Paul Bostaph has written the drum parts. In terms of skills they are basically equal though because Paul could play Daves parts fine but when it came to writting Dave is better.

SITA has a few filler songs I thought, which I never listen to. Hell Awaits was good, but the production is God awful, I don't know how an album could sound so crappy..... Tom's vocals were never a strong point of the band, although his wailing screams were somewhat amusing

Does no-one like 'Gemini' from 'Attitude'? I have to say, i've never heard toms vocals sound bad live, but then i'm not usually being too critical whenever i get the chance to see them! One of the best gigs i ever saw was them, Sepultura and System of a Down at the London Astoria. Absolutely F***ing superb. Kerry gets a bad rep generally because of the often bone-headed things he says in interviews as much as for his playing; i'm in no position to criticise the latter but occaisionally even i cringe at the stuff he comes out with, and i'm normally the first to rave about Slayer every chance i get...!

Yeah Show No Mercy has their "catchiest" and most melodic songs, that or Seasons in the Abyss....... Reign in Blood is pure thrash, not much melody, but very good....

The intro to that song is awesome. I love the whole album to Hell Awaits. Best song on there has to be At Dawn They Sleep.

About the blood effects... the whole concert when I saw them, I was waiting for that, and when they played Rainning Blood they didn't. It was a bummer.

You can argue that Hell Awaits is one of the first death metal albums ever.... it just doesn't have death vox, but the guitar, drums and lyrics are all the beginnings of what would become death metal..... too bad the production is terrible on that album

Crypts of Eternity is one of the most evil songs I've ever heard, that one riff always sends chills down my spine

It may not even be tom's bass you're hearing though, he doesn't even play bass on all of the songs in the studio, Kerry does it. Apparently he just wants to focus on his singing.
and I've noticed when he plays live he plays simplified basslines (you can barely hear the bass anyway live)

its not as if tom's bass plying is very good/creative/interesting so when he simplifies the bass parts it isn't a big deal. unfortunately I haven't seen Slayer live yet but I have watched Still Reigning like a million times.

i have war at the warfield. i still need to get still reigning. from what ive herd its good.

if in most of the songs you cant hear toms bass, then it makes sense that he just concentrates on his vocals. he is getting older and he cant get the same pitches he used to, so i think its good that he is only paying attention to his vocals.

I was reading an article in a Jager magazine they were passing out before the concert when I saw them, King mentions the new album and Lombardo.. Let me find it, and posts what he says.

EDIT-

OK, the dude interviewing KK asks: You guys have been working on your first album featuring the original line-up since Seasons in the Abyss. What is that like? Was the black magic still there?

KK: Me and Dave have made a couple demos; because, we assumed we would be recording before any of this touring happened. That's why we booked the rest of the year so solid. We have a demo of ten songs. Hanneman has added two more since then, and I think me and Jeff each have another one. So, we're already fiddling around with thirteen to fourteen songs. Once we got the rug pulled out from under us an knew that we weren't going to record, I myself took a backseat. I said, "Alright, I'll let these lay for awhile, then I'll come back probably on one of my days off and start thinking about lyrics."

GOD NO! Not more King lyrics.

Yeah they put on an excellent show. If you don't mind people pulling on your hair and such to try and get in front of you. I saw them at a small venue it only holds like 2000 people and it's all stand up. It was a sold out show and I forced my way to the front when Killswitch was on stage so I could beat all the stage rushers for when Slayer came out. Bout a 3/4 way through they were playing Chemical Warfare, and I could barely breathe, I had to crowd surf out because no one wanted to move from their spot.

The pits were crazy aswell, people where getting bloodied faces.

Slayer concerts=great energy, kickass songs, and fun.

I have been a massive Slayer fan since my introduction to them in 1984. Although I love metal and would put Slayer with maybe Maiden as my favorite metal band, I also listen to a lot of mellower and less heavy stuff as well. So, with that in mind I can kind of assess them outside of the box, so to speak, and not just rate them the way a 100% diehard metal only fan would.

First, Kerry King LIKES and INTENDS to play certain solos outside the key they are in at the time. I remember reading some years back he called it "making devils music" or something to that effect. In any case, he's technically a decent player, fast, etc. He writes good songs in my opinion but I would say overall JH is a more established player/better songwriter, sure. As for Tom, I preferred the days when he was more of a "talker" than the current shouting he seems to do on latest releases. I mean Reign in Blood, South of Heaven and Seasons are just insanely good thrash/power metal cd's. Hell Awaits, HTC and even Show No Mercy were great too but the production wasn't as crisp.

Slayer are a truly unique band in the sense that they play very commercially inaccessible music and have done so for over 20 years and really not wavered! You have to give them credit for sticking with what they believe in. They also NEVER fail to impress live and the few people I have taken to a Slayer show that were not necessarily fans have come away impressed. It's like going to a demonic baptist church or something, it almost possesses you!

Anyway, Slayer are f**king great in my opinion and even though I am not real current with the latest crop of metal bands out, I think they are still right on top.

Altho they have some really cool riffs, like the breakdown bit of Angel of Death. But apart from that its just being fast for the saske of being fast. Just not my thing.

Angel Of Death is tight! God I love that song!

Yeah it kind of sucks, I would love for a Reign in Blood style album.

Sorry guys the interview wasn't with King, it was with Jeff. Here's the part of the interview about the new album (JH=Jeff Hanneman, just incase :thumb: )

BM: Last time I checked in with you guys you had like 10 songs for it.
J H: We have tons of ideas. We don’t have any working titles, we have dumb names that we call the songs so we know what we are talking about but we don’t have any real titles for it. We have tons of music to work with.

BM: What is it sounding like so far?
J H: To me it sound’s like the first three songs on the last record. It’s very intense and very insane.

Well, Tom said that they're having Rubin (the guy who produced Reign in Blood) produce this album, maybe they'll make it super fast thrash un-forgiving music like RIB again.

There's nothing really wrong with GHUA, there's only one album on there that has no solo, and the songs aren't all that bad, though it's their second to worst album. In my opinion their worst album is Undisputed Attitude, it's all Punk and Punk-covers. And I really can't stand Punk. It's the only album by Slayer I cannot stand.

There's nothing much wrong with GHUA people don't like it because it sounds more modern and not like old slayer. Some people dare to call it "almost nu-metal". I like the album it has it's ups and downs. I can't stand Undisiputed Attitude because I don't like Punk Rock, and it's basically all Punk covers.

What are you guys on? Judas Priest NEVER did Aggressive Perfector. The Priest cover that Slayer did was Dissident Aggressor.

Whoever the guy that said Slayer own Priest must be very biased towards Slayer. Turbo is the worst Priest album by a mile. Try listening to the classic albums like Stained Class and if you prefer the heavier stuff, Painkiller. K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton rip Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman apart.

UGH! I read an interview on Slayersaves. Jeff said that Jaegermeister was thinking about having Slayer headline every fall tour, since they've already headlined the fall tour twice. So I checked the JaegerMusic Tour website, and Disturbed is headling.

Slayer is an excellent band.

I love them. I kinda fell off them when Lombardo left, but bought God Hates Us All when it came out.

I've seen them a few times, and their pits are insane.

Their albums play like symphonies to me, so I could never pick one song off their albums. The whole thing is a must listen. It was always amazing to me that from Reign in Blood through Seasons, every song on those albums was quality.

I am grateful I caught them a few times during those good times. I saw them on the Reign tour, and again on the South of Heaven tour, but missed them on the Seasons tour.

Yeah the vibe they release when they are on stage is incredible.

Everyone should know that feeling. I wish you luck in that, because the rush you get is amazing. Makes me think how they are feeling knowing they send so many people into a ravaged frenzy.
