Secret Stars - Your Life to Live

There's not much to say about this song. It's just a pretty standard folk-pop song with relationship-concerned lyrics. The guitar provides a nice, if sparse, accompanient. The guy's got an okay voice, the lyrics are fairly standard fare. I didn't like this song but I also couldn't hate it. Maybe you have to be in the right mood for it, then you might feel it's the greatest song ever made, but as it is it was just average. 6/10

Really good song by a great band. It is a simple song and sang with real passion in the singers voice like most of their songs. The song sounds like early Rancid. It has Meaningful political lyrics and is just another simple and awesome song by these guys. I can never get tired of this song and recommend anyone who hasn't heard of these guys to check them out.

Not great, but good. The vocals somewhat remind me of Jello Biafra, as well as the lyrics. The song (from what I can make out) is about a guy who's really bored with his life. The rythym sections and guitar remind me of the Ramones, and other early stuff like that, which is cool to mix in with the Jello-ish vocals. Really short, but worth a listen.

I like the little drum beat. The guitar noise is cool. You could hear H.R. talking in the background. This descending thing is pretty cool. Kinda freaking me out. Riffing. I like the ring out bit. Once again, H.R.'s vocals dominate everything. Kinda slow for a Bad Brains song. The riff gets boring after a bit. I love those squeaking vocals. This song has to be the slowest non-reggae Bad Brains song I've ever heard. It's just the same riff over and over. Some cymbals, a drum roll, and now a crazy solo. Not really playing ability crazy but the sound. Well, that solo was short, back to the same grind. I love Bad Brains but there are definetly better songs than that.

This is a good song of The Clash's. The song starts out slowly with just the vocals and guitar. Then the drums and bass kick in and the song gets moving. I like Joe's vocals in this song (as I always do). Mick has a cool solo in this song and just some nice all around guitar work.

I like the way it starts with the chants and clapping, then comes in with drums. It really gets my feet tapping. After that, the instruments pick up, and the vocals start. The lyrics are good. It's pretty much talking about living in a city, and being creeped out by all the weird, and sometimes dangerous people you see, and just wanting to get away from it. All of the instrumental parts in this song are well done, and the chorus is pretty catchy. It's a fantastic song, done by a fantastic band.

Rating - 6/10

This song is very catchy. It seems very generic to me. Though it sounds pretty good for the type it is, it just doesn't thrill me too much. I've heard one song from The Briefs and thought it was just okay, thats what I think of this one too. It says all the same stuff that I've heard before. Oh well.

Bob Marley - Them Belly Full (But We Hungry)

I haven't heard much Bob Marley, and the stuff I have heard was very mundane of reggae styled music.
It starts with the typical drum intro, then goes into a really cool riff. After a nice stroke of the guitar, it goes into the mundane upstrokes. He then begins to singing, and his voice, like always; is okay. "We're going to dance to the music, dance. Forget your troubles and dance." Yes, yes I've heard that before Bob. I like the song, but it's just too dry for me. It's the same upstrokes, same dry singing, and lyrical value. There is a lot of tautology, and then it ends by fading out. In the background there is faint soloing going on.

My Love My Way is a really unique and quite amazing album so when MLIW released Witness expectation were high. I have not as yet heard it so i'm glad i have a reason to check it out.

The song starts with good guitar riff that sounds almost melancholic, it continues throughout the song. Next a steady drum beat comes in, and all the instruments build up to the introduction of the vocals. The vocals are one of the best things about this song, sincere and life-weary, which fits in very well with the lyrics. The lyrics are also very good. Mainly, it's hard to find anything that sounds as unique and as good as this in modern hardcore.

I'd give it a 9/10.

Bones Brigade - Hands Off

This is a pretty typical 80s hardcore. Fast, angry and chaotic. The guitar is raw, the drums are pounding and the bass is unusually prominent but this helps the song. The vocals are very typical 80s hardcore, shouty and they get the point across. The music is perfect for the song, backing up the vocals perfectly. There are some really cool guitar fills during the chorus and a short solo that is cool but doesn't overstay it's welcome. After the final chorus there's a fill from each instrument before the song ends with an angry scream of "JUST LEAVE ME ALONE!" This is classic 80s hardcore: brief and brutal. 8/10

The Freeze - Broken Bones

Now this is what I call an 80s hardcore song. From the classic This is Boston Not LA comp, it tells the story of getting beaten up at a party for being punk. The music is fast, buzzy and rudimentarily produced. The lyrics are juvenile but cool and perfectly articulated by the angry adolescent rasp of the lead singer. Does anything encapsulate the futile but admirable anger and rebellion of much of punk-rock than telling some rednecks who just kicked the crap out of you to "**** Off"? The chorus (just the title shouted by the backing singers) leaves a bit to be desired but otherwise, this is a great 80s hardcore song. 9/10

I saw these guys live with Flogging Molly and the show was amazing. I've never heard any of their recorded stuff. Starts out with fiddle. I love their fiddler, crazy old dude with a big beard. Some other instrument joins, sounds like accordion. This guys voice is incredible. Haha, it's true "The older you get, the more perverted you will get" And now I can't even understand what he's singing. Italian maybe, or maybe the dialect is just too thick for me. I like this bit where it slows down, really keeps you on your toes. All the extra instruments are sweet. I think this is one of the songs they played live. He has a cool laugh too. This is so unbelievably excellent. I love these guys. This bit is awesome, with the interchanging fiddle to accordion. This slow semi-talking bit is great. I just can not say enough good things about this song or this band. Completely amazing 10/10

The Filaments - Oi! It's the Filaments

There's a quiet little intro riff before the drums build-up and the song kicks in with a shout of "LET'S GO!" The horns are pretty cool and echo the opening riff. There's another short guitar break and cool drum fill before the vocals come in. They're fairly standard punk vocals but fit the song well. The music is decent too but not particularly special. It's got a pretty standard street-punk with a touch 80s hardcore feel to it. THe chorus is simple but great. "Oi! It's! The! FIL-A-MENTS! After another verse it slows down with a little burst of the funeral march on the horns and the music goes into a chugga-chugga mid-tempo riff which speeds up into a simple but catchy horn riff leading into the final chorus of "Oi!"s which ends the song with a final drawl of "Fil-a-ments" This is a really cool song if you're into punk otherwise it might not interest you. I liked it and hope to be at their reunion gig. If you enjoy this you should definitely check out The Dead Pets for excellent Briish punk with horns although they're slightly more Oi! tinged.7/10

The Dead Pets- If It Sells it Sells (punk)

This song started right up. No pause, no clicks, no talking just right into it. The bass is really cool, reminds me of a rockabilly, fold-punk kind of thing. I like hearing a light brass section in punk like this. Sounds really good. I don't really like this guys voice very much. Just kinda, meh, not my style. "It must be true, I read it in the paper" These are my kind of songs. Picks up very nicely. Gets really speedy right around these parts. The bass riff towards the end is sweet. I have no idea what he's saying about his remote control but this style of singing I'm liking alot more than the style before. All in all, I will definetly be checking this band out. 8/10

The Minutemen - The Big Foist

I love the Minutemen but don't listen to them as much as I should. This song is a lot more chilled out than the crazy breackneck speed funk-punk of some of there other stuff. It even sounds slightly ska-ish in one section. The bassline is very smooth and the vocals are similarly easy-going. There's a really cool guitar solo as well at one point. It's all very restrained but it works brilliantly with the repetitive but perfect rhythm section and Dboon's choppy guitar holding back more than it usually would. It's short but it's the Minutemen. I wasn't expecting Reoccuring Dreams. 8.5/10

Bread and Roses - Bedtime for Plutocracy

This song starts out with some guys messing around in the studio, and I quote, "Shutup Nipples". You hear a bass and a drum. The guy starts singing. He sings okay and the lyrics are nice.A minute later I think I hear a piano in the mix. Then the drums pick up. The song kicks in. I hear a violin bass tamberine and drums and I think a piano and some other instuments. Then it's nothing but the guys singing with a cello or something for a minute. Then the song basically ends.

I liked it pretty well.

The song commences with a drum pound and then proceeds to the intro "I'm poor and i'm weird baby, you got no time for me." It repeats this throughout the song. The chords are pretty dry, and the singer is kind of asinine. It's not a bad song though, it sounds more like oi! than pop-punk. The song consists of the same thing over and over. It lacks catharsis and diversity. It's still a cool song to shake your head to, I guess.

This song starts off with a sound clip of a sow being murdered. I only say murdered because that's what they make it out to be, so I guess I'll believe them. Besides, living your life based on Propagandhi would be a good life, indeed.
After that the opening riff breaks out. It's very metalish and awesome. Then it goes into 3 quick chords. Slowly building. It slows down pretty slow after this with some whispered vocals "It's not your fault, that just the way it is, there's nothing we can do." After this it builds up very slowly and then goes into an almost guitar solo like riff which is awesome and stays for the rest of the song. Everything fades away and all you hear is a heartbeat.

The Mr. T Experience - She's Coming

Although I've heard this band before, I am listening to them again in attempt to familiarize myself more with the group's material. Since I am a long time fan of pop-punk, I felt it was rather appropriate and proper to choose them.
The song begins with clean chords and is soon followed by drums and bass. The singer begins rather quickly and his vocals are pretty typical. "She's coming, she's coming, over tonight." It's a very poppy, fun song so far. I really like quality pop-punk songs as this one is. The lyrics are mundane for pop-punk. Then it slows down and the singer's voice mellows and the bass is much more rich. Then it goes back to the chorus "she's coming...over tonight!" The singer has a faint resemblence to Ben Weasel. I like his voice. They end with the chorus, "She's coming... over tonight!" This is a quality song and I will be downloading one of their albums as soon as Eric gets on soulseek. It made me think of good, summer memories. One's that were full of Screeching Weasel and pop-punk.

The One Night Band- Mama was Right

Cool intro. I don't listen to much jazz but it's making me think of that. Pretty good voice on the singer. Just a tiny bit raspy. I'm liking the bass line but then, I like all ska bass lines. The background vocals are kinda lame. I like the "Ye-e-eah" and the lines "It's all about me, not about you" The drums are the cool reggae exhoing drums at parts and that sounds great but mostly they're just non-existent. The horns sound really good and not really what you typically hear in ska or reggae. I like this "In my Spare Time" bit, it's a nice breakdown from the rest of the song. The song seems very reppetitive, just kind of the same riffs and lyrics over and over. A little mellow for my taste but nice if you're into reggae. Fade out with a cool trumpet solo. All in all it was alright but not something I'd listen to all the time. 6.5/10

Victor Wooten - Classical Thump

Ok, sorry for the delay, just had some difficulty finding/downloading one of the songs. I finally got this one even though it wasn't my top pick, but here we go. I pretty much know before listening that I'm not going to like it enough to download anything else, because I'm not into this kind of music, and I don't really appreciate good bass/guitar/drumming or what have you, as long as something sounds good with other instruments, I like it.

So the song begins with bass, obviously, and it sounds "electronic" and echoey. This man plays the bass pretty fast, and I admire his quickness. This song is actually more of a collection of different songs, probably "classic" songs, because he stops playing for a couple seconds and goes into something different. However, they do sound similar, so I don't know. At one point in the song he is playing it VERY fast, and it sounds like a mix between a bass and a harp. The music is pretty soothing, and kind of sounds like Christmas music or music from Fantasia. If you love the bass, and appreciate good bass musicians, this is for you. Haha, it sounds like he ****ed up at 4:27, but that's most likely not it.

As I said before, I wouldn't download any more of this, but it is enjoyable. 8/10

Deltron 3030 - Positive Contact

This song has a classic big hip-hop beat that really gets your head nodding but also with some weirder futuristic sound effects. I'm pretty sure the rapper is Del tha Funkee Homosapien who's one of my favourite rappers so the rhymes and flow are good. The chorus has a few scratchy samples that work really well together to make it really catchy. In keeping with the futuristic tone most of the lyrics seem to be concerned with science-fiction themes which makes a nice change from the stereotypical topics of most of mainstream rap. This is a great rap song from a really good rapper. I enjoyed it. 8.5/10

Violent Femmes - I Held Her In My Arms

I love the Violent Femmes, and I'm a big big fan of their earlier stuff. This doesn't resemble much their earliest albums, but it's good in a completely different way. The song opens up with full instruments and a trumpet(or maybe a saxophone) in the 'foreground'. The singing starts quickly, after maybe ten seconds in, and is very typical of the vocalist's usual colourful delivery, that manages to stay clear even in the faster parts. The first lyrics that struck me as unique and deep were "I'm learning things I should've already learnt" and "I was with a girl but it felt like I was with a boy." The latter has two meanings, as far as I can see. Either he is so in love with this girl that he thinks of her as a friend first and a lover second, or that he is imagining he could be this intimate comfortably with a guy. Both of these are nice and, for me, give the song the feeling of friendly intimacy with the singer, sharing his feelings with the listener. I'm loving the bass in this, it is funky. 9/10

Bob Dylan - Hurricane

Holy COW this is a long song. Coheneran you cunt. The song begins with soft acoustic guitar followed by a soothing violin. "Pistols shots ring out in a barroom night..." are the first words sung by Robert, corresponding with the album cover of I GUESS Bob dressed up as a Mexican bandito. The song quickly goes in to what appears to be the chorus "...here comes the story of the hurricane." The story continues, and is briefly interrupted by a mini violin solo almost at one minute. The song continues to do this for awhile, with short bursts of violin solos, more of the song being sung and a story being told. The chorus' lyrics are changed though, while the music stays the same.

I don't know if I'd download more of Bob Dylan, I like this song but I'm not sure I like the rest of his stuff.. but I'll definitely be checking out more sometime. I'd follow the lyrics if I wasn't writing this as I listen, but oh well, I'm hardly half way through this EIGHT MINUTE AND THIRTY TWO SECOND SONG! Even though the song doesn't really change that much aside from lyrics, since it is a story, and I don't think anything has been repeated yet, it does not get boring or repetitive. The violin bursts are different every time I think. Oh, now there's a trial going on. Oh **** Bob just said "crazy ******". Alright I'm gonna stop reviewing this until the end because Bob's telling the story, not me.

Ahh sweet some harmonica!! This is a nice way to end the song. No words have been spoken for about a minute, just harmonica and continual background instruments. Good song, 9.5/10

Antimaniax - Don't Steal Because the Government Hates Competition

The song begins with a pretty good Simpsons quote before some spooky music kicks in shortly followed by a big heavy riff that fades out into a really sweet bassline which signals some great jumping ska and the vocals. The ska is very well done particularly the bass. The vocals are frenetic and match the music with lots of background vocals shouting "WHOA!" or echoing the lead vocals between lines. Without warning it slows and speeds up the song quickly with a big blast of hardcore that jumps back into another ska section before the song ends with another hardcore section. This was a well done song with the genre transitions being handled well although I much preferred the ska parts of the song but that's probably just my taste. 7.5/10

Erik Petersen - Farewell Good Fellows

I've never heard of him before, but I'm definitley getting more of him. The song starts off with him plucking the guitar, and then it goes into proper playing. He starts off "Farewell good fellows, your ways are not for me..." in a voice that stresses certain parts of sentences and words in a way reminiscent of Dylan, but his lyrics are very unique, and the sound of his voice reminds me of the SLF singer's. "Rest upon your laurels, glad you've found your peace, but farewell good fellows, your ways are not for me." This really speaks to me. This song is all about the meaning of the lyrics, and when you've found them is when you really come to appreciate this guy's skill in songwriting. "Your armour will not fit me although fine it's suiting you." Is another example. The lyrics aren't varied, and they have an extremely precise meaning. His passion when singing, the emotion he puts into his lyrics is beautiful and the more I hear this song (it's on repeat) the more vivid I find the meaning and the more I like it. This song really needs nothing. I strongly reccomend it.

Stiff Little Fingers - Harp

Another soft and easy acoustic song, but this acoustic guitar sounds different! What's wrong with it?? Just sounds kinda weird. Ok, sounds like a more recent SLF song, something that could be from Guitar and Drum (but it isn't). Very similar to a Billy Bragg song, because so far, there aren't any other instruments aside from the guitar. Ah, but we got some drums kickin' in around a minute, and some faint bass. Some dude starts playing the harmonica as well, but it sounds like a robot is playing it because they're only playing one note. I'm trying to figure out if this song is happy or sad. I think it's one of those hope songs. Trying to be uplifting. Jakey says "don't call me harp" several times, and I am sitting here wondering what the hell that means. There's an electric guitar that strums an occasional power chord or two, and then out of nowhere busts a solo at 2:20!!
Not really a long solo, actually more like a long lick, because the guitarist plays it several more times. Not much left in the song, except more of "don't call me harp" and that guitar lick. Good song, although not up to par with anything on Inflammable Material, 8.5/10

The song starts with a mid-tempo very repetitive droning riff and a simple drumbeat which sounds pretty cool. The vocals come in soon after. I really like the vocalist. He's got a really cool typical snarling voice that alternates between a whisper and a squeal but it always retains its menace. The music changes for the chorus but remains mid-tempo which means the song does drag on slightly but it's still enjoyable though it could do with some more variation. 6.5/10

Mischief Brew - Ain't It The Life

First of all, before I start off, I have to say that I've just discovered a new-found affection for weed, and in this song he was singing about "getting stoned and watching the main street parade" which reminds me of the Nottinghill Carnival and smoking pot and eating hash brownies and dancing with the jamaican parade dancers in a lewd manner. So this gives the song a 5/10 minimum. Onto the song. It starts off with a plucking guitar, then he starts singing "Never sing no surrender when you've just learned to crawl\It's all bravery knowing when to fly and fall, but down here by the ocean things just don't seem so bad on our backs, (and now his voice gets determined and raspy) AND WE'VE ALL FORGOTTEN WHAT MADE US SO MAD!". This just completely got me off. I was like "AWESOME!!!" in my head. Now a xylophone's started playing as well as the drums, which I forgot to mention started earlier. Now, after another verse, near the end he shouts "MAY ALL WE DO BE FOR OUT DELIGHT!" a few times, like one does to get the point of the song across at the end, and it goes into an accordion playing on it's own, and it ends.
All in all, a fun song, and one you would put on a summer chill-out stoner compilation, but it won't be near the best songs on the disc, if you get me.

The song starts with some nice gentle strings that really set the tone nicely and the vocals come in after awhile and the music speeds up but remains quite gentle. The vocals are okay and the lyrics are good. At about 50 seconds the punk music kicks in which is really catchy with some nice instrumental breaks including a pretty cool solo. There's a mellower section with just the bass and drums that provides a nice change of pace. There's another solo before the song fades out. This song is very anthemic, and well-executed. 8.5/10

Sage Francis - Jah Didn't Kill Johnny

This song is a tribute to Johnny Cash, may he rock in peace. It's not like most other songs in that it seems that the artist(s) wrote it only for themselves, as a little token of appreciation, like writing a poem about someone you love, as opposed to artists who try to write their songs with a message to the listeners, or get their ideas out there. This makes the song very personal and gives an insight into the artist(s). The song starts with an acoustic guitar and then the main singer goes "Holler at ya boy" and the background vocals "Holler at ya boy" in a mellow beaty way, much like the background vocals on Big Bad John. Then their's someone speaking in the background "This song's going out to a childhood mentor of mine, Father John, I want you to know I still care about you" and at the same time a harmonica starts up along with the guitar, playing the same 3 notes over and over again. Then the chorus starts with the singer putting on the typical rapper's menacing voice, "The smoke didn't kill Johnny(kill Johnny), the drink didn't kill Johnny(kill Johnny), the junk didn't kill Johnny(kill Johnny) and the women didn't kill Johnny(kill Johnny)". Near the end the background vocals start again with "Holler at ya boy" and the main singer singing "Life is easy" until fadeout.
Kind of a cute song, nice and easy, but more something to listen to if you're a big Cash fan, because of all the little references and tributes to typical Johnny Cash techniques and style, which I'm sure I'd missed at least 4/5 of.

The song commences with tribal-esque drumming. Then, the singer, starts rapping slowly. He begins very slow, but the tempo increases. And as it increases he starts to rap faster. I like this, it is very soothing and relaxing, yet very plain. The song lacks diversity, and to me, catharsis. Then there is a higher pitched sound that comes into the background but quickly fades. The singer becomes much more difficult to understand as the song proceeds. His lyrics are not very impressive, when you can hear them. It ends in the same manner as it begun. The song failed to progress and that was it's downfall.

The song starts off with two chords "Plinnk, plinnnnk" and then the horrible horrible singing starts. You can't make it out, and even if I spoke Japanese (They are Jap), I wouldn't understand what he is singing. He is screaming into the microphone for about two minutes, and then the whispering starts. The music is pretty boring as well. It's the same thing over and over again, until the whispering starts AGAIN and it's the same chord strummed over and over again, with a little of the cymbal, which doesn't improve matters. Oh, three minutes in, the music stopped, and we have an opportunity to hurl. Not it starts again, slow and rhythmic, kinda nice. He is singing softly, probably about a girl, I am dreading the screaming to come. Music stopped again. Faint guitar noises in the background, nothing else. ARGH! It screams! IT's terrible, truely terrible. This song is seven minutes long, and a wasted seven minutes of my life. It really is intolerable screaming, I am turning it off.

I like a little old school rap, so I figured I would pick this song. The whole song is rapped by Eazy E, who is one of my favorite rap artists. The verse beat is nice and slow, and the rapping is average, freestyleesque speed. Then after every verse is the chorus which is probably my favorite rap chorus I have ever heard. Its just clapping and a bell sound and then it kicks in, then later w/ a thumping sound. It is really creative. Inbetween every verse/chorus is a dj scratching. I really enjoyed listening to this song and I recomend it for any old school rap fans, but i am asuming they have alerady heard it since it was such a big song. STRIKE ANYWHERE - DETONATION

I've listened to Strike Anywhere several times before and also I saw them live but I couldn't find any other of the songs. Good thing is I don't remember most of their songs and I didn't remember this one in particular so it'll be like reviewing a new song.

What can I say about this guys, they are one of the best melodic hardcore bands around lately (with permission of AWS) and they have a style I absolutely enjoy. I didn't remember this song but I can say I loved it, as far as I know, these guys have never written a bad song. The song starts with the singer shouting "we are not the images we see!" and straight to all the instruments, then back-up guitar and then again he shouting "I refuse to follow the fashion to its end!", so great intro to start with. Straight comes the verse which is purely Strike Anywhere with some cool guitar octave and that vocal style which makes me love this band. The chorus is quite catchy and with cool instrumental below it. Then comes a different verse a little less "rough" with palm-muting guitars and then an octave guitar bridge, cool as well. The song has yet another different part similar to the less rough verse and then another rough verse like the first one. Just after this it comes a whoaaaaahh part that's what I like most about the song, and now the outro with a powerful drum beat and lot of instrumental back-up from the lead guitar to which he yells "we are not the images we see!" to end the song.

The lyrics talk about the consumism which we live our lives and the power of consumism in this world, which we all born with and should learn to fight it and not let it overwhelm us. I like this subject and the lyrics are well written so this adds points. I think this review helped me getting a better point of view of this song and I'm sure I'll enjoyed more from now on. I give it a 9/10 because it has many parts and they're all great but it quite overuses octaves.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Mellowship Slinky in B Major

My all-time favourite band, EVER. Song starts off with a rhytmic guitar and drums, and then goes into a funky bass and the guitar changes to compliment Flea. Anthony comes in with his high, raspy kind of voice, and it just makes you move. His rap-like delivery, emphasising the rhyming syllables, fit in particularly well with the funky music. When the backing vocals come in, he starts singing softly, like he does nowadays (this song is old folks, early 80's methinks), and the guitar comes in with another beaty rhythm. As the song goes off, the music changes a tiny bit for every chorus or verse that go by, but always sticks to the original style from the beginning of the song. As it goes into the instrumental break, Flea does his thing (bass solo), and it's so unbelievable funksome and groovy, that I had to get up and dance. Then Anthony sings another chorus and the instrumentals come into it until it fades out.
I notice this was a **** review, but it's the best I can do right now, what with the funk and weed and everything. 10/10

The Beastie Boys - The New Style

This song is very typical Beastie Boys. Cool beats and abrasive rapping. The rapping is loud and typically obnoxious, perhaps too much so, but complaining that a Beastie Boys songs is obnoxious is like complaining that a Jimi Hendrix song has too many guitar solos, or that a Dead Kennedys song is too political, or that an Pennywise song is boring and repetitive, it's what makes them them and they're not going to change it. If you don't get it then you won't like this song. It won't matter that the lyrics are funny or that the beats are cool throughout and perfectly compliment the rapping and its delivery and that there's a entertaining faux-crowd section towards the end, if you don't like the Beastie Boys you won't like this song. If you're into subtle then this song is not for you, it's about as gentle as a sledgehammer to the groin, and the voices can start to grate (in the same way that a rectal barbed-wire wrapped stick insertion can) but if you like beer, rapping, rocking out, having fun and really pissing people off then this is what you've been looking for. In short, if you're cool, this should be right up your street. 8/10

Chokign Victim/Leftover Crack - Born to Die

I only have the LOC version of this song, so ima use that.
The song starts off with 3 soft chords, a piano and a choir. Than the vocals come in with "Born to die, and you get to sit and watch your TV set believe the lies before your eyes." Than repeats the same chords as well as intro verse. And gets into the song using the same 3 chords and finishing off the first stanza. It does a little interlude and goes to the thrashy-ska part for the verse. Goes into a faster distored 3 chords and goes back to the thrashy-ska part for another verse. It follows the verse with another fast, distored 3 chords, and goes to a vslw break down. Than either stza or ezra go "Cha" and the kick ***, yet easy solo kicks in being followd by another fast 3 chords. Another slow break down comes with the lyrics "gone to bed
God is dead lies and truth are in my head your history, society, economy it isnt me" And in comes another fast distorted guitar riff and pretty much ends the song on "we are born to die" and a long climatic ending. The lyrics are out standing, like all of LOC/Choking V's lyrics are. As well as the music. The mix of crust, ska, metal, punk, dub, and possibly hip hop makes the crack rock steady sound a genra in its self. I give this song 10/10.

Erik Petersen - Boycott Me!

So Forced Listening means that you're supposed to review something you've never listened to before and for the last couple of weeks I've listened to little else than Erik Petersen but I'm still going to review this song. I sometimes wonder even if I'm listening am I actually hearing? Erik Petersen is someone you can have on in the background as his music is incredibly catchy and easy to listen to but at the same time there can be a deeper meaning.

The rallying cry of Boycott Me, the phrase around which the song revolves, is "I'd rather taste a rebel's glory than drink blood from your cup" which may be dismissed as simple rebel posturing but whatever you think of it, it is undeniably a powerful image, one which invites the listener to put themselves in that situation. Everyone likes to think they'd opt for the romanticism and bravery of "a rebel's glory" but in reality the choice is harder however, this is still an epic proclamation, a powerful slogan equal with Petersen's best such as "Roll Me Through the Gates of Hell" in its defiant stance and ability to inspire.

Petersen can do more than simply issue a call to arms, his imagery is also fantastic. He opens the song with the image of a parade with "fife and snare marching through the square" and "stencilled flags of insurrection dancing through the air" personifying these crudely made symbols of defiance while he makes no mention of the marchers themselves. Here he's making the point that it's people actions that define them, that all you need to know is that people are defying authority, not who they are. This is another powerful image that illustrates Petersen lyrical talent.

With the image of the parade, Petersen is far from a lone rebel in this song. Through use of reference he establishes himself as a rebel in context talking of "a Thomas Paine of modern day" absorbing and conveying the 18th century pamphleteer's most famous beliefs (that all men are essentially equal) in just one line. He also speaks of "those who rode the rails" and "those in jail". The romantic image of riding the rails is one entrenched in American culture and conjurs up figures such as Woody Guthrie, someone else who stood up for what he believed in. The talk of "those in jail" is perhaps more important bringing to mind people such as Nelson Mandela and Mumia Abu-Jamal who on closer inspection appears to be the subject of this song, the modern day Thomas Paine.

Abu-Jamal was convicted of killing a policeman and has been on death row ever since despite repeated calls for his release and mounting evidence of his innocence. In jail he has become a celebrated radical writer coining such phrases as "Today's Empires, Tommorrow's Ashes." Petersen talks of "liberty being cracked within its bells" referencing the famous Liberty Bell of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania the state where Abu-Jamal was convicted of the crime drawing parallels between the American ideal of freedom (as espoused by Paine) and how it contrasts with the reality. He also uses the line "demons in your heavens and angels in your hell" to highlight the fact that those who are supposed to uphold justice, the police and courts, are in fact not as high and mighty as they seem and those languishing in prison are not always the demons though they are the demonised. He also allies himself with Abu-Jamal with the line "F.O.P. boycott me" instructing the Fraternal Order of Police to add him to the list of businesses and people they boycott due to their support of Abu-Jamal and contributions to his defence fund.

Towards the end of the song Petersen looks to the future stating "The scorned few of today are the heroes of tommorrow" and predicting a time when people such as Abu-Jamal and their beliefs are co-opted by a government seeking to establish itself as supporting liberty by putting these once reviled figures on stamps. Petersen decries this, drawing contrast with the first verse of the song, by saying "we'll hope they're not forgotten" implying that whilst for a group of people such as those in the parade at the start it is their collective actions and symbolic nature that counts, someone like Abu-Jamal should be remembered as an individual for their words and beliefs rather than simply a face on a stamp.

While I have concentrated on the lyrics musically it is brilliant too starting with an almost fiddle-like tune perfectly segueing into a brilliant rolling rhythm that perfectly complements the lyrics. Petersen's voice is perfect for the song too, exactly the right mixture of harsh and tuneful.

This is a brilliant song. Before I started this review I completely missed the references to Abu-Jamal, I hadn't properly thought about what Petersen was saying, but that doesn't mean my previous interpretation was wrong. Petersen is talented enough to provide a song at once highlighting a particular case of injustice but at the same time proving a rallying call for those who wish to defy a corrupt authority of "demons in their heavens" and lambasting parents who curb their children's natural (as Thomas Paine would see it) instincts for freedom and questioning things. This ability is summed up in one line when he says "Spread word all around" which can be seen as both satirically telling all the parents to spread word about the wrongness of Abu-Jamal and Petersen and a rallying call for people who believe in either (or both) freedom and Abu-Jamal to draw attention to these issues. The songs two messages are perfectly articulated by Petersen's insistent voice that never leaves you in doubt of his sincerity and backed up by the simple guitar which echoes the attitude of the lyrics.

You need to listen to this song and you need to listen to Erik Petersen. This is just my interpretation, listen to the song and maybe you'll find your own meanings. For those mourning the fate of Against Me! he is a light in the darkness, someone to believe in and singalong with.

He. ****ing. Rocks.

The singer and music begins at the same time. The singer sounds like Chris from Ghost Mice. The lyrics are of him robbing a store, or something. I like it because it's telling a story and that's more catchy, lyric wise. "I wouldn't worry about being free, just want people to listen to me sing." His lyrics are great and they perfectly show his desire in this world, and what his inspirations mean to him, even through plight. The music remains the same throughout the entire song and it ends with the resolution of the story. Very good song.

Starts with a simple slow drum beat and some harmonica. then his vocals come in, theyre not great but good. the guitar has a countryish twang at some parts. the chorus is good, but i think it could be a bit more powerful. then the harmonica comes back in, thats really cool. the songwriting is really good. his singing gets kind of annoying after a while though. cool song, but its a bit too repetitive.

The Ramones - Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue

It's The Ramones. It's a catchy 90 second poppy punk tune about the desire to inhale sniff solvents comprising of 4 lines which tell you that. The singer wants to sniff some glue, the singer wants something to do and these wished are also shared by 'the kids'. If you don't like THe Ramones, this won't convert you. It's a lot more stop-start than their typical stuff but it's still unmistakably The Ramones. What were you expecting? Sartre set to music?

Good Clean Fun - A Little Bit Emo, A Little Bit Hardcore

I have recently download (half) this album, but have yet to listen to any of the songs. The guitar fades in to open the song, as if it was being connected from a previous track, but alas, it is the first track of the album. Soon enough a powerful drumline kicks in, powerful, because it is loud, the skill of the drummer or the actual line does not have much importance. When the lyrics begin, you can tell it's going to be somewhat of a story. The lyrics consist of the singer descrbing two individuals, an emo boy, and a hardcore girl, both quite stereotypical. Lots of singing along, so I might as well and try to learn this song, if I want to have a good time when I see them in February.

There's one thing I don't like about GCF (aside from the crappy, yet joking lyrics), the choruses. The singer's voice, in my opinion, is too.. positive. "She showed him Times Gone By, he showed her how to cry..." The jist of the chorus is that the two are blending their scenes together, sharing their bands and whatnot. I really like the part after the third verse, and also the ending of the song, when the singer sings by himself one line, and every other line the rest of the band sings along. The song ends on a good note, with "let's start-to-day!"

The end of the actual song is really lame, with a stupid which I am sure they are aware of. "Meanwhile, back at Posi HQ..."

Overall good song, 8/10, and I apologize for the lack of descriptions on the actual music, but I think this will suffice.

Suicide Bid - Turning The Blind Eye (3:35)

The song begins with a drum roll, speeds up, then slows down to the mundane dub/reggae beat. I like the music, and I like dub, so the song should be enjoyable. The singer isn't very linguistic. He has an accent, but it's hard to tell what he's saying... the lyrics sound cool though. The trumpet roars in the background, with the excellent bass and guitar up front. I really like this song so far. He then begins to rant like he was before, and the lyrics are excellent. Especially now that I can understand them better. The trumpet roars in the background, this time with a bit of chanting type singing. It goes back into the ranting about child labor. I agree with his stances, I only buy clothes from the USA. People that run those business are inhumane, definitely. Anyway, this song was excellent, if there other stuff is as political/social and similar to this one; I will definitely pick up their CD. Very, very well done.

Being that i used to listen to Third Eye Blind way back in their "Jumper" days, and that i dont really listen to em anymore. I thought itd be good to refresh my ole noggin. Blinded starts off with a quick drum beat, which lead me to believe it was going to be a fast song, than it broke down to a single chord being played on a guitar. The chord goes for awhile than the lyrics come in. The music is a little bland, and doesnt have much change in it till the chours, which is also bland. Hes singing about a girl he once loved. And hes saying that when he sees this woman(or man) it stops him in his place with his/her beauty. The song is mid tempo, not too fast not too slow. It also gets some what repetitive after a while. It seems the singer wants to be back with his ex, which he still dearly cares for, kinda boring and generic, but its cool, ima listen to the rest of the album now. I give it a 2.786/5

The song begins quite nicely, I suppose. I mean, at first it's very easy to listen to. It goes along and then whoever the hell is singing starts to scream. It's the most polished, homogenized, ineffably BAD scream that I have ever heard. In fact, I have to finish writing a speech, so I'm going to do that rather than sit here and waste my time on this horrible song. Brand Nubian - All For One

It starts off with a steady solid beat, and then the vocals come in. He's got a high voice, and he rhymes fast and neat. He carries on rapping for nearly two more minutes. It's pleasant to listen to, but it's hard to follow. The chorus comes in, three or four people singing it. Then it ends abruptly and the second rapper comes in. He has a high voice as well, but slightly more nasal than the previous. He doesn't rhyme the same. His rapping is more about the beat than the way the words fit. He almost creates a second beat with his voice. Then the chorus, and the third rapper. This rapper has an even more nasal voice, but slightly lower than the second rapper. He raps slower than the other two, but emphasises certain syllables that speed up the sentence. He doesn't carry on long, and it sounds more like a summation of the song than anything else.

The Skanksters - Duckie

Begins with clearly identifiable ska chords, and perhaps a bit generic, but you can tell it will be a fun song. I really like the horn line and the sound of the horns, they sound of poorer quality than the rest of the instruments, but are nice and gentle on the ears, and very catchy. "This is a story about a rude named Duckie..." Yeah, one of those story songs. I'm pretty sure Duckie is called a rude, even though rudie makes more sense lyrically and rhyme-wise. Oh well, Canadians are weird, and they're probably French, so they must have gotten lost in translation. It appears Duckie goes to a party and gets into some trouble. The vocals are female, and go along nicely with the fast-paced music, giving a hint of punk, due to the speed. The main difference from the chorus to the rest of the song are the horns, and the vocals become less distinguishable.

After another verse and chorus, there's a nice little break, where the song reverts back to the intro with the catchy horn line. Another verse, explaining Duckie's predicaments. Typical rude boy song describing a rudie getting in trouble. The song ends on a good note, continuing the horn line and adding a bit more. 8/10

Fearless Iranians From Hell - Land of the Free

This song is quite a typical mid-tempo 80s hardcore song along the lines of JFA's Beach Blanket Bongout. It starts of with a little guitar intro before a big DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN leads into vocals. The vocals are standard 80s hardcore, snotty and abrasive with simple anti-authority lyrics. The music is cool with a lot more going on than you might suspect. The guitar work especially is really cool sounding with lots of scratchy fills and a nice little solo towards the end of the song. During the chorus there's a fantastic addition of dimly audible angelic choruses in the background. This isn't a fantastic song but I definitely enjoyed it. 7.5/10

John Cooper Clarke - I Married A Monster From Outer Space

John Cooper Clarke was a punk poet from Liverpool in the 70's (I think). This is one of his most famous songs, though one of the worst, in my opinion. I'm a big fan, but this is crap compared to most of his other stuff.

This song has futuristic sounds all through, mostly computer noises. When his voice comes in, it has that robotic drone to it, like when you speak into a fan, which adds even more of a sci-fi feel to the song. It has a steady bass rhythm through-out. "I fell in love with an alien being/Who's skin was jelly who's teeth were green/She had the big bug eyes and the death ray Glare/feet like water wings, purple hair". This song at first seems like a joke song, though he slips in a line or two that may or may not have been a comment on racism to immigrants; "We walked out tentacle in hand/You could sense that the earthlings wouldn't understand/They'd go 'nudge nudge' when we got off the bus/Said 'It's extraterrestrial, not like us/It's bad enough with another race/But fu'ck me a monster from outer space.'" I like this little piece of commentary, and if it was during the 70's, I imagine it coincides with the influx of Pakistani immigrants. As the lyrics end, a weird electronic solo begins of various bleeps and random sounds. It ends with someone ringing a bike bell over and over, and what I think is a bass drum being kicked softly.
I like this song, it's cute, but I would reccommend other stuff by him.

I can't help but like this song. It's absolutely ridiculous, but it's got the quality that Meatloaf shares of being so utterly preposterous that it somehow makes sense. There's lots of female-vocal choirs doing background vocals, a large dose of big heavy distorted guitar riffs, liberally garnished head-nodding beats, a nice helping of synthy keyboard lines, the occasional string section, cheesy spoken intros and outros and all topped off with some wailing vocals. Delicious. You can't help but head nod. This lyrics would be vomit-inducing in any other setting bu this is the sort of song that raises pretentiousness to an artform. It's very big, very silly, and very enjoyable. 8/10

I've honestly never heard the Butthole Surfers before, so this should be interesting. This song starts funky with a cool rock sound to it. So far so good. Then the lyrics come in. I like how they sound. It's kind of creepy and evil sounding. It fits the instruments pretty well.

Kings of Nuthin' - Nailhead

I have all of those songs except for Whatever it Takes and this one, and I chose this one because I've never heard Kings of Nuthin' before. Wow, like three seconds into the song I already like it quite a bit. I always knew Kings of Nuthin' were different from other punk bands from what others have said, in a creative sense, but I didn't expect this. The song begins with rough-sounding vocals and goes immediately into the chorus. This song sounds like a mix of punk vocals with a bunch of musicians you'd expect in a Mark Twain book. The song is very upbeat and fast, and makes you want to dance, but you probably wouldn't know how to dance to this crazy music because all we know how to do is skank like idiots.

The chorus comes up very quickly (within 15 seconds) and I believe they are yelling "she don't say", and some other mumbo jumbo. I really don't know what the hell this song is about, but it's good. The second verse is about the same length as the previous one, but that doesn't matter, because it's fifteen seconds of awesomeness followed by an awesome chorus. Following the chorus is a guitar solo, with a new, mini horn line. This part makes me think of a bunch of people drinking and dancing and having a good time, but like I said, in a Mark Twain book. The first part of the solo is really good, but then the middle of it doesn't seem to fit in quite as well. Another verse and another chorus, this one different from the other because it's the ending. Great song, 9/10, I'll definitely be downloading the rest of this album.

I have never heard of the Sideburns, but the name sounded cool, so I figured I'd check them out. I had no idea what to expect, but liked what I found. I'm not big on instrumentals, but I like this one.

It starts with the drums and bass for a couple seconds, before the guitar comes in. Immediately I start tapping my foot and wanting to dance around. Shortly after this, the horns start in. This really gets the song moving nicely. At certain slight pauses of the horns, a weird "weeeeaahh" can be heard. I don't know what it is, but it's cool.

The song continues in the same fashion until a little over a minute in, the horns stop for a short while. It's just the guitars and drum, and it's very catchy. It makes me think of Sublime. The horns come back in, and alternate for the rest of the song.

All of the instrument parts in this song are good, and make for some awesome traditional sounding ska. I'm going to download some more from these guys.

This song starts out fast, the vocals are decent psychobilly vocals. I wish there was some more bass, because that's usually my favorite part of psychobilly. The chorus is pretty short, and it's not that catchy. This isn't a very catchy song. The guitar has a lot of distoriton, and the guitarist seems at least decent. NoMeansNo - Big Dick

Song kicks off with a funk-as-f'uck bassline, which is used throughout the song. Great basslines are typical of Nomeansno, and the vocals play along with this. It reminds me of a more hardcore Minutemen - this is what Mike Watt would sound like in a more hardcore orientated band. After the chorus, the song changes, and there's a sweet drum pattern. The vocals are pretty good here, and they're even better when the funky bassline returns with the vocalist singing really fast. The outro consists of the singer talkin' to a girl and asking her to go back to his place 'n' stuff, whilst the funky riffs continue. This is a great song, really highlighting how talented the band are at their instruments. They bring tha' funk, and they bring it good. 9/10

The Big Boys - Funk Off

This song starts with a whistle which signals the bassline and drums to kick in. The drums are pretty mellow and smooth and the bassline, well, imagine the funkiest bassline you can, make it funkier, cover it in funk, and funk it up a bit. That's the bassline. And indeed the entire song. Some great horns kick in pretty soon, the guitar work is minimal but just adds to the funk. The vocals match the music perfectly. There's also judicious use of the whistle some cool background noises. The song is under two minutes but if it was any longer your head would probably explode from the funk. 9/10

So I've been meaing to check out this band, my cousin said if I ever felt like bluegrass that I should check them out. I've heard the AM! version of this song, and liked it, hopefully this one's good too.

The song starts out with the same sounding guitar (or banjo?) as I have heard in AM!'s version, but soon a violin or some similar string insturment comes in, and it's a good addition I think. I like this guy's voice, really really country sounding. The words are sung faster than I'm used to for this song, and I like it better at this pace. I like this version better than AM!'s. It's a happier feel and has some good vocal and insturmental harmonies. I'll definitely be checking out more from this band.

So I got this band's album a long time ago, gave it a quick listen, thought it was good, then didn't listen to it again. But it seems they have regained some popularity on mx so I decided I'll try them out again, especially since now I'm not a huge fan of anarcho like I used to be.

It starts slowly in what sounds like a Led Zeppelin/Folkesque guitar line. Then a flute line comes in. This song sounds like a Jethro Tull song because of the progish guitar and flute. The vocals come in and it is still very folky sounding. The guitar has a little wah going on that makes it even more prog rockish. Back to the flute line. Doesn't sound very reggae to me. Sounds like some sort of a folkanarcho. The vocals are a bit hard to understand, the guy has an accent. I really like the flute lines though, something new to a genre known for its boring and repeativiness (thanks Crass for pioneering a **** sound) Closer to the end it seems like it picks up a little, with the vocals getting gruf right before back going into a flute line. This flute line ends with heavily distorted guitar and really gruff vocals. This is the part where the violence is being called for. Then into a really fast rendention of the previous flute line and distorted guitars. Vocals repeat Free the Land until the song ends. Pretty good

Mike Watt - Pissbags And Tubing

Mike Watt has to be one of my all time favourite musicians, his bassmanship particually with the Minutemen is groundbreaking in punk music for it's technical skill and for his ability to write great, funky basslines. After listening to Minutemen I checked out his various other projects such as Dos and fIREHOSE and finally took a listen to his solo work off his most recent album The Secondman's Middle Stand of which Pissbags And Tubing features. Now to the review.

This is an interesting song, not typical of what one would expect if listening to other Mike Watt work. The song starts with some pounding drums followed by some weird organ sounding noise and Watts bass. The bass really doesn't stand out to me like earlier Watt would although it does have it's moments during the 6:17 song. The song continues this way throughout most of the song, it's a somewhat catchy song with good sing along "pissbags and tubing" lyrics by Watt.

Watts vocals are enticing and they drew me into the song. His rough vocal styling are quite enjoyable if a bit underrated my alot of people. I think the real interesting part of this song is the lyrics. Before this album Watt was quite sick and this album is a concept album of his life at this time. It's interesting listening to the lyrics of the whole album and the differences between songs particually this song.

All in all it's and interesting song but lacks any real distinct Wattage compared to alot of his other work. Still an interesting listen, especially if you listen closely to the lyrics and understand the concept of the album.

Chavez - The Guard Attacks

This song starts really well with a great distorted riff that last about 20 seconds before the drums and a second smoother guitar comes in. Unfortunately the vocals come in and their very average. The same cool riff repeats for most of the song switching to a much more high-pitched one that builds up for the 'inspirational' chorus which fades away to the same riff. This is a cool song. The guitar really makes it. The vocals and lyrics are very average but the guitar lends it an edge which really works. 6.5/10

Johnny Hobo & The Freight-Trains - Acid Song

I'm not too familiar with alot of this folk punk music sweeping these boards lately, only really hearing Against Me and the new Ghost Mice, neither particually impressed me so I feel it's a good time to try some other artists.

The song starts by a 1-2-3-4 countered in by the singer followed by a rather generic sounding strum on the acoustic guitar, it reminds me of another song but I can't put my finger on it. Initially the vocals reminded my of Against Me but the more I listened to the song they bacame more distinctive and enjoyable but still you can hear the influence.

The lyrics play a major part in this song, like any folk or punk song would and they do impress me with their catchyness and you can't help but listen and learn every single line of the song. The lyrics are about drugs and from what I presume from the lyrics it's an anti-drug song but I could be wrong. Anyway, as I said the lyrics are rather attractive. The vocals are rather raspy, similar to Against Me as I said earlier but with an extra quality to them. Perhaps the fact the song is live makes his voice more previlant.

I like this song, and I assume from listening to listen to other similar artists the music is put in the background with the lyrics and vocals taking the lead so to speak in the song. This isn't a bad thing however and I do enjoy the song more than the other artists in this particular genre.

Soul Asylum - Long Day

This song reminds me of a slightly less funky Big Boys. Or a more badly recorded Talking Heads having sex with the drummer from Husker Du, but not as good as that sounds. Or Big Black where the guitar isn't played with a cheese-grater. Or The Exploited if Wattie had been to art-school but not as bad as that sounds. Or a punk version of The Band with actual attempts at song-structure. Or 500 million indie rock bands if they had some actual ****ing balls. Draw your own conclusions from these assertions. I thought it was alright. 7/10

Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros - Bhindi Bhagee

I could only find a live version of this, but it should work, right? Anyways, to give you what the song is about, before they start playing, Joe says, "This is a very complex song about food - and mostly it's about takeaway food."

It starts off with a cool guitar and some sort of percussion, moracca's (sp?). After a couple of seconds, a flute comes in. I like how this is sounding, it's really happy. Then Joe starts singing, or rather - talking. after a verse of slow spaced out talking, a chorus comes in. It's pretty catchy, and a kind of funk sounding guitar starts playing. After the chorus, Joe sings in a pretty quick voice. I like this song so far, a lot of cool insturments being combined. There's a quick little bass solo, and then the drums come back in. Joe's talking to the crowd, I wish I could have found a studio version, but this has inspired me to get some more from these guys. Really catchy song overall, and I like the insturmentation, and Joe's voice in it.

Toxic Narcotic - We're All Doomed

What can I say, before this my exposure to crust was pretty limited to maybe Aus Rotten who didn't particually tickle my fancy. This song by Toxic Narcotic contained more melodic, catchy qualities than I expected and you can tell they were influenced by crossover bands from the 80s compared to say Aus Rotten who sound alot different. I'm not sure what seperates this band from other hardcore punk bands to be called crust because they do sound very similar but anyways very compelling stuff.

The song starts with come eradic drumming with a little guitar riff following building up speed until the vocalist comes in. I find the guitarists style is quite enjoyable throughout this song, it's really catchy and fits well with the overall song and vocals. The vocals offer nothing different to alot of bands but they do fit well with the music and I do oddly enough enjoy them in this song context. From what I can make out from listening to the song the lyrics sound pretty average and tend to overuse the word "fu'ck" in the chorus which tends to be a staple in this type of punk music. I can't help but be reminded of Municipal Waste when listening to this track even though the comparasions are few and far between.

My overall impression of this song is quite positive, they do what they do well and i'm impressed enough to check them out further, thanks poops.

Poison Idea - Plastic Bomb

I've been meaning to check these guys out for a while, or at least since Pig Champion died. I've heard nothing but good things, so hopefully they live up to the standards set by Adam and some others.

It starts off with a piano, and after 10 seconds the piano and the guitar play a similar tune. It sounds like a metal song so far. the guitar stops and the drums play a pretty fast beat, and then the guitar comes back in. It's a pretty fast song. The vocals come in, I don't think that I like them as much as some other 80's hardcore, but they're pretty good. There are lots of "Whoaaaaaaaaa"'s in this song, which definitely add to it. after a short bridge type thing, there's a verse with the drums playing fast, Pig Champion singing, and the guitar doing a lot of staccato notes. The song ends shortly after that.

I liked it, but I'm not sure it's as good as I thought it would be considering allthehubub (lol) around it. I think I'll still check some more from these guys out.

Just so you know it's off a bootleg I got and it's not as good as alot of their other stuff in my opinion. It doesn't even sound that similar to Pick Your King really. I'll put some of that up for my next FL.

Blood For Blood - When The Storm Comes

Ahhh, I have had not such fond memories of Blood For Blood infact I would go as far as saying I hated them. They were generic, they were annoing and they were tough guys. Hey, i'm not one to judge so i'll give them one last chance to see if they change my mind.

The song begins with a few distorted guitar chords before the vocalist shouts "LETS GOOOO" followed by counting the song in 1-2-3-4. The vocals are quite hard to listen to and just feel out of place and annoying for use of a better word. The vocals are pretty generic but atleast it's an improvement on "****ing your pussy is like ****ing the wound from a shotgun blast, with gang green". About 1:13 though the song there is a little guitar solo, it's seems like a bit of an odd place to have a solo however. At about 1:50 the song breaksdown with the repeat of the Lets go lyrics before going back to the mid to fast temponess of the rest of the song right at the end.

This song slightly improved my opinion of Blood For Blood, mainly because of a slight improvement lyricly but I highly doubt I would listen to this band again anytime soon.

1985 - Sophomore

I've been to post-punk lately, so I'll give this band a shot.

Starts off with a little guitar line, then another guitar comes, then the drums follow, then the bass shortly after. The instruments blend together each playing their own little line that blends well with each other. The same keeps repeating for quite awhile, it's kind boring now. Then the drums change and seems a third guitar comes in or maybe the second has changed to a distorted guitar playing chords, the rest of the instruments continue though. The bass comes up front a little and plays a little line/solo. A hit on the cymbals and a different guitar line comes in with lots of echo. This song seems like a big post-punk jam. Borders on being pretty boring and interesting. It ends and I feel just a bit disappointed because it felt like it was going to build into a vocalist coming in, but it was just instrumental.

Under One Banner - Cool Beans

The song starts off with a guitar chord, then a cool bass line. There's a pause for a few seconds, and then all three insturments play a pretty standard hardcore intro. Another short pause, and the vocals come in. I like the vocals a lot, they go really nicely with the music. The chorus doesn't sound much like I would expect, no catchy lyrics, no typical hardcore "Whoooooa"s, but it's good. There's another short verse, which leads into a slow bridge type thing, with the high hat and some distortion on the guitar. This leads into a build up, and then a cool little "solo" on the guitar. There's another verse, and then another chorus, and then the song fades out.

Suicide Machines - 95% of the World is Third World

It starts off pretty mellow with a steady drumbeat and some pretty cool guitars with some guy speaking over it saying "This is no manifesto, this is no propaganda." which makes it sound like the rest of the song will be a propaganda-filled manifesto. After this there's a pretty cool melody on the guitar that sounds a bit like a downbeat indie song before someone shouts "Hey!" and goes straight into classic ska with the title repeated a few times before a brief verse then the chorus. All this is in jumping ska at breakneck speed. It's a bit more chilled out on the verse though. After this repeats a couple of times it goes in to another spoken-word section which has cool music but does sound slightly cheesy before going back into the ska and finishing with shouts of "Third world!" This was a cool song which combined the two styles within the song well. 8/10

Bad Brains - Don't Bother Me

Well, I know forced listening is supposed to be new music. I really like Bad Brains already, but haven't heard this song, so techinically it's still new.

This songs starts with the words "Don't bother me" being spoken. Then a couple seconds later the guitars and drums start. It takes on a heavy feel.

The vocals sound a little more spoken than sung in this song. At least in the beginning. It gets very catchy. The instruments and vocals in this song all go together nicely. It sounds like Bad Brains, which is a very good thing, since Bad Brains are great.

I'm not too sure what else to say except that I enjoy the song. I'd recommend this song or any Bad Brains for that matter to anyone who's never listened to them.

Something Corporate - Cavanaugh Park

Something Corporate is a pretty good pop punk and this song is off their first album Leaving Through The Window, I believe. It's one of my favorites from the album and it's a little more emotional than the others. Yes, it is actually about a park.

This song starts off nice and slow making pretty decent use of the piano. The lyrics are kind of more spoken then sung. It picks up about 1:30 into the songs for a little bit and then goes back into the slow pace. Overall it's a good song. I'd give it a 7/10, a good listen but not one that will be stuck in your head all day.

I recommend getting Leaving Throuh The Window if you like this genre.

Catch 22 - Walking Away

The song starts out with some tapping on the cymbol and a cool bass line. Then the guitar and horn jumps in. I like the horn part a lot. The intro is at a nice slowish speed and then the song speeds up. I like the chord progression in this song. A really catchy song. Cool horn section throughout the song. There's also a pretty cool part where each player from the horn section plays a cool little solo-type thing. Then back to the bass line and cymbal tapping with lyrics. Guitar jumps in again. The song then finishes up.

The Beat - Rough Rider

This is fairly standard two-tone ska. A nice simple but effective bassline, catchy horns, upbeat but downplayed guitars. This song does drag on slightly as it's almost 5 minutes and there isn't much variation. The vocalists all have standard Toasting style accents that leaves the song without any of the contrast of Specials tracks. This song isn't bad but despite it's inferior recording quality, I still probably prefer the Prince Buster version. 6/10

Mischief Brew - The Lowely Carpenter

I love Erik Petersen, but for some reason have never checked out Mischief Brew. I'm hoping this'll be as good as his solo work.

The song starts off with a slow steady beat on an insturment I cannot name. Then Erik starts singing. I love his voice, and it's great on this track too. There's a cool little part on the acoustic, and the first verse comes in. It's a pretty slow song, with just the guitar and Erik singing so far. I like the lyrics a lot. Petersen is a great songwriter. The song picks up at the end, and he starts to raise his voice, only to slow down, and say "But I am a lowely carpenter so, what have I power to do?"

Good song, I'll be listening to more Mischief Brew in the near future.

Latterman - Fear And Loathing on Long Island

Latterman know how to write a catchy tune. This song starts chaotically with the guitar arrythmic disrupting the intro before jumping into a simple but effective riff for the verse which shoots into the anthemic chorus, filled with lines to sing-a-long too and pauses just at the right point. The song proceeds through another singalong verse, chorus, bridge and chorus at breakneck speed before climaxing. This isn't a brilliant song but no-one could argue that it's not a good solid punk one. 7/10

My instant impression is one of great confusion. I’m wondering weather or not this is supposed to be a comic track, or if this band was actually trying to attempt a serious sound. Ill be honest I had never of heard of this group before, but having seen their name I assume its a bit of a joke.

Pretty crazy. Whilst I think it is supposed to be funny (or just mad) the erratic percussion is a genuinely interesting sound. The vocals are a bit of a downer (in my opinion) they sound a bit too deep and soul like and it doesn’t seem to fit well with the crazy nature of the track (or maybe I just don’t get it). It starts out with a an okay, verse, nothing that really makes me wanna get up, but the drum part has a cowbell. The bass is pretty defined, and becomes my main focus during the second verse, and does osme interesting stuff here and there. There's a lead line, which is pretty lackluster but works its way through, and then Mr. Bass does his thing again during the verse. And then there's a bridge here with hand claps that picks up the slack, and then it ends.
This was okay, not my favorite Jam song, but it's still an alright listen.

Tommy Gutless - 54 40 or Fight

The song starts with a slow bassline before the whiny guitars and militaristic drums come in sounding like the one 'melancholy' song on every mid-90s pop-punk album which predictably builds up into a riff from every Oi! song ever conceived with shouty vocals espousing meatheaded American aggressive nationalist lyrics still hung up on frontier spirit and Manifest Destiny, with the obligatory fists-in-the-air shoutalong chorus, like Frederick Jackson Turner fronting a bad Briggs rip-off. 3.5/10

EDIT: I just got an e-mail from the band and they say this song was intended as a satire. They're still pretty average band but if you like this kind of Oi!/Street Punk, you'll probably enjoy it. 5.5/10

Dead Milkmen - If You Love Someone Set Them On Fire

I just recently got into this band, but haven't heard this song. After hearing a few members talk about it, I figured this would not dissapoint.

The song starts off with a standard ska riff on guitar, and I like the vocals, although they are a little weird. After a few verses and choruses there is an organ (I think) that plays an odd little tune with the drums. It sounds like something that should be in Shaun of the Dead.

Defiance, Ohio - This Time, This Year

This is a very mellow song with a steady bassline and scratchy fiddles/violins that complement the simple vocals. This mellow intro goes on for over a minute before it kicks into the uptempo part of the song which is very catchy, as you'd expect from Defiance, Ohio with passionate vocals and each element of the music complementing each other. It manages to combine the DIY amateurish small feeling of the band with a much fuller bigger sound that makes the song sound great. 7.5/10

Got this track from Mitch Clem's Liquid paper thing he made and I never actually listened to it. I told myself I would, but I didn't. I like this little guitar thing in here. Whoa, that went straight to music, and then chills out with the guitar thing. His singing there reminds me of a BTMI! song. I'm not really digging the "off my mind!" bit. The singing's kinda wonky. Actually, I just don't really like his voice at all. Yeah, and this song doesn't seem to really have much going for it. Just same old same old repetition. That song was alright. Didn't dig the singing voice that much, and the repetition really got to me.

Alright, first of all, it should be noted that this song is a whopping 10 seconds long. But, I must say, that in those 10 seconds I can really feel the energy. It's very fast. Also, there's a cool little bass part near the end of the song. Then three seconds later, the song ends.

Tiger Army - Never Die

This is pretty soulless stuff. It has all the elements of a potentially good psychobilly song, simple punk riffs, prominent frenetic upright basslines, a little quiet surf interlude, 'spooky' windy moor sound effects, vaguely morbid lyrics, but it all feels too polished and boring. The singers' vocals get progressively more annoying, starting as a sub-Mad Sin bellow degenerating into a strained tuneless yelp. This song randomly rapes anything that could contribute to a good song, but without any understanding of what makes them appealing in the first place. There's even an angry chant of "Never Die" at one point, just to further the unoriginality. This song is formulaic, unlikable and boring. 3/10

American Steel - Got A Backbeat

It starts off with a distorted ska riff ont he guitar, and then the rest of the band joins in. The vocals are raspy, but I don't mind that. The bass is going nuts and the guitar doesn't change, which is expected as it's ska. The chorus changes a lot, and sorta throws things off but is still good. The second verse features the still solid bass pline, and the chorus once again, sets things off a little, but is still enjoyable. There's a little guitar bridge, but it's a bit gay as hell. Then the chorus comes back. This is that good of ska song,a nd not that great of an American Steel song either. 6/10

Soophie Nun Squad - Donkey Call

You know, I love punk but I'll admit that it can get stale sometimes, which is why a band like Soophie Nun Squad is so good, combing punk, rap-metal and god knows what else into something that shouldn't work in a million years, but somehow does. Donkey Call begins with bongos and a short whistle blast heralding the frenetic vocals, which are shared by a veritable crowd of people throughout the song. The music goes from funk, to punk, to hardcore and back again. There's scratching and random sound effects that all add to the joyous delirium of this song. How can you resist a song which packs in more originality and creativeness into under two minutes than most bands manage in a career. How can you resist a song which has a singalong chorus of "Let me hear your donkey call! EEYORE! EEYORE!"? How can you resist anything so beautifully demented? You can't. I'm not sure whatever's going on in the minds of Soophie Nun Squad, but whatever it is, I'm just glad that it's there and producing music as infectiously bonkers as this. 10/10

Grabass Charlestons - The ****ing Song

My instant impression of this song is that it’s pretty catchy. The guitars come in with a cool intro, which does a good job of introducing the song. And the vocals match this well with a nice melody. Whilst singer has a good gravely sound to his voice, it does seem to lack an element of aggression that I personally like to hear in punk songs like this.

Nothing particularly great about this song, but nothing particularly wrong either. The catchy nature of the track gets a little tedious towards the end due to the amount of repetition. The song is too short however for this to be a major issue. This is the kind of band I imagine I could get more into if I gave them a good listen and a bit of patience. I think ill give it a fair but not great.

The Black Water Jacks - Couldn't Love You More

This is pretty standard stuff, it sounds like music designed for the closing credits montage of a two part romantic drama on ITV. There's some fairly nice riffs, piano parts that sound like you've heard them a million times before, incessant background ooh's and ah's and a vocalist who sounds like he's trying to combine every classic rock vocalist into some vaguely inoffensive mush. This song is uninspiring in every way. The vocals, music and lyrics all sound second-hand, the chorus, verses, bridge and solo are all competently put together but ultimately lacking in passion. Boring, predictable and drawn out. 3/10

The Devil Makes Three - Man Tap

Starts off with the standard country/bluegrass bass and drum line with a little guitar riff playing along. Nice kind of bouncy start. Vocals start, very slurred. Kind of hard to understand at first. Gets a bit easier as it goes along. Standard country/bluegrass lyrical content, drinking away troubles, etc. The music stays pretty much the same throughout, which doesn't bother me much because it fits the song and is bouncy and nice. You can't help but tape your feet along with the music. It's pretty cool a band like them is from the Bay Area. Myspace was being a bitch while it was playing and it made it hard to enjoy, but still a good song.

The Avalanches- Two Hearts in 3/4 Time (3:22)

Strange talking the beginning. Some talk about money. Very weird "oooh yeeaah" business. Down to the music. Cool rising sounds, along with waves and a ladies voice. I think I could probably stand for this if it didn't have that annoying restart kind of sound. Back to just the rising thing, with a bit of a melody thrown in. Yup. Just more of the same. Now the girls voice is back. This is seriously repetitive and boring. I might be able to fall asleep to it if I wanted to. Building noise. Oh god, this is nutty. Just ab it of synth melody. Lots of drum machine noise. Now some voice sample of a guy says "The Avalanches Rock" I think. That was seriously an annoying song. Boring repetitive untill the end. Didn't really go anywhere at all.

You can tell from the first chord that this is a pop-punk song. A steady mid-tempo drumbeat, distorted guitars, slightly nasal vocals that yelp out the anthemic chorus, pop-punk through the ages shines through as an influence with every word. This isn't anything special, but it does nothing wrong either. From the anti-suicide lyrics to the little bass, drums, vocals bridge towards this end, this is a decent pop-punk song. 7/10

Mad Sin - Sin Is Law (Racket in 711)

A wolf-call leads into a quick punk intro that slows down into a surfy sort of riff that speeds up into a spooky punk/ska/psychobilly riff. We're 25 seconds into the song, the vocals haven't kicked in yet, and already this is better, more inspired and more inventive than all the combined efforts of the Horrorpops, Nekromantix and Tiger Army have ever or will ever conceive. The singer has the perfect voice voice for psychobilly, a rock and roll yelp with a rough punk edge. The chorus isn't one their best but is still anthemic. I think the song's about smashing up a hotel room, but Mad Sin can make even rock and roll cliches sound good. There's so many great little fills and throwaway riffs that they throw in as the song catapults onwards through a brief rockabilly solo never losing it's pace before coming to an abrupt end. This is a great song, not the best Mad Sin song, but still highly enjoyable for anyone with an appreciaton for punk, rockabilly or psychobilly.

Drum rolling intro. Then some nice guitar tone with catchy chords. This guys voice sounds kinda like he'd be singing kids songs. It's interesting. Yeah, not really liking his voice at all. And, the music itself is getting pretty boring. The same few chords again and again and again. The lyrics sound interesting, and I'll probably look them up to read them in a bit. Robert Blake - Sweet and Easy

Robert Blake's got a split out with Erik Petersen, the Erik Petersen side of which is one of the best things I've ever heard, however I've never really got into Robert Blake, I think I tried a while ago but gave up, I can't really remember why. This song starts out nice and gentle, folky guitar with a sort of hawaiian vibe to it that makes me wonder why I didn't like him when I first gave him a try. So far, so good. Then the singing starts and it all comes flooding back. Let me make this clear to you, I have listened to a lot of bad singers, but Robert Blake has the single most ****ing annoying voice in the history of the entire ****ing planet. Now I remember and, God, how I wish I could forget. He elongates random fuuking vowels for no discernible ****ing reason at all, except perhaps to get you feeeeling his emooorrtion. It's nails down a blackboard stuff. He sounds like a retarded moose with a mouth full of toffee. Seriously, who sings the word sofa as "sorf"? He's not mangling the english language, he's raping it to death with a pneumatic drill, pissing on the corpse, then selling it to McDonalds as burger meat. Listen to him as he relates his heartfelt story of going on a date. He can't bring himself to torrk himself into your hooooooorrrrway! He can't get arp the gormption! Tonight he has no paaaasssion for sedorction! He wants a warrrm bed where there's narrrtheeeng but comfort! You make him feel darrrl! He's horrping to fall into bed with you! The story would be ****ing boring as **** if he wasn't singing like a cow being fisted. Why would he think anyone gives a shiny shite about mind-crushingly inane minutae like this anyway? Any story can be improved by good use of language but here there's no interesting lyrics or attempts at even the most basic poetry. It's like he's been given a My First Folk Love Song For Dummies book. This desecration of the beauty of the English language goes on for five ****ing minutes (Five minutes! Kill me now god.) before he redeems himself slightly with a lengthy instrumental break, which is actually nice and soothing and calms some of the incredulous rage that will builds up whenever words spill from he big fat (presumably hideously deformed) gob. But then he's back, like a bad omelette you though you'd seen the last of when it went down your throat but, BLLEEEAARRGH, here it comes again, just like Robert Blake and his banal mooing. Now you corm orver to his new rorm here he's almost always alorn. Sweeeeet and eeasy, just like you orrrways should be. This monstrosity takes 15 seconds shy of NINE ****ING MINUTES to complete. NINE ****ING MINUTES! I could've listened to Bat Out of Hell in NINE ****ING MINUTES! I could've listen to True Believers THREE TIMES! I could've listened to It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)! I could've listened to someone having violent painful diarrhea for nine minutes and it would've been better than this. Hell, they could've ****ing had violent painful diarrhea while squatting on top of me and the only thing I would be thinking would be "At least I'm not listening to Robert Blake singing." They'll be using this in Guantanamo Bay as a torture device within three months. There are many things in the world that annoy me but nothing, absolutely nothing (no not even that), I can think of right now would pissed me off less than listening this mother****er droan and whine and moan about some bint he can't decide where or no he wants to ****. There's a nice sweet folk backing here, unfortunately Mr. Blake's vocals and unbearably tedious story means he justs puts his foot in his mouth and then starts singing with it in there. 0.5/10

Armalite - I am a Pancreas (I Seek to Understand Me...)
The first section of this song (with the call and response vocals) reminds me strongly of the Clash which is a good thing.. however this only lasts for about 3 seconds. The rest of the song is ok. The Californian accents are slightly annoying, however you cant blame them if thats where they are from. The song sounds like it should be on a Tony Hawks game.

Whilst the genre of music (Punk/pop) may have dropped in cool over the last few years (thank you Blink 182) my liking for it is a bit of a guilty pleasure. This song doesn't have a fantastic melody nor does it have an amazing musical hook, but it is in no way offensive to listen too... and thats ok. Whilst songs like this one may never feature in my top 10 favorite tracks it doesn't stop them from being a bit of fun. And thats why this song get a good but not great..

The song begins with a short repetitive Bad Brains-esque riff before the other instruments kick-in, the guitars sinisterly wailing before the song enter's it's third stage with a more post-punk stop-start bassy feel with call-and-response vocals reminiscent of Soophie Nun Squad. The song bashes on at a furious pace, never giving you time to think careering through inventive bridges and raucous verses. This is good stuff. Reminiscent of the glory days of post-punk but not in the awful overproduced NME kind of way and also fusing rougher early hardcore and pop-punk sounds into it. I thoroughly enjoyed it. 9/10

Okaaay, pull this one back on topic (sorry I only ever do you song that you have to dl)

The King Blues - Mr MusicMan (Ska)

This song is a refreshing change for me. Its along time since I have heard anything that sounds much at all like traditional ska. Most of the ska I get to hear nowadays is in the form of horrible Ska punk bands (Which more often than not is just Punk pop with a trumpet), or old overplayed Ska from the 70s. This song is simple and effective, without trying to be anything that its not.
As I have said about other tracks this is never a song that would feature any where near my top 10 favorite; however its the kind of chill out song that's always going to be great for driving or just hanging out.

Its simple effective, and whilst it does lack anything that might traditionally be know as musically exciting its just a great chill out piece. Ill give it a fair..

Elle Milano - Bunny Gun

Starts with some weird spoken word. The instruments come in, making for very loud and noisy opening. The instrumentation is very cool, but the vocals are FAR too high-pitched and are really annoying, ruining it for me. Fortunately, this noisy part of the song is over soon, and after a short break we're into the verse. Thankfully, the vocals are much better here, as the singing is much more melancholy by comparison and it sounds pretty good. I really hate that chorus though, it's potentially very good but ruined by the awful vocals. There's a lot of cool guitar effects in the song, with little noise parts added to make it all more interesting. The song is played at a pretty high speed and it just seems to thunder by before you know it. I have to say, for the most part i really enjoy this song, but during the chorus when the singer goes all high-pitched it is just ****ing awful, he sounds like he's taking a particularly painful shi't. Some of the instrumentation and the fast pace sound like Mission of Burma (a little), but much more poppy. It's a cool song though, if they'd stuck to normal vocals it would have been very enjoyable.

Reagan Youth - New Aryans

Being that Reagan Youth are one of my favorite bands, i decided i shall do a review on the song.

It starts off with a cool guitar riff a couple of times along with the drums and bass. Than it comes in with the lyrics. Threw out the verses it does the little guitar riff between the lyrics. The lyrics are about getting rid of all nazism and rascism, as well as promoting Anarchism. Its not that hard of a song to review. The music is pretty repeditive. Damn good song though. If you like this song listen to the cover DS-13 did of it.

Propagandhi - **** Religion (Haillie Sallasse, Up Your ***)

I hope I'm doing the correct song here. I am no Propagandhi expert, but I think there is some confusion amongst fans as to the title of the song. I personally have two versions one labeled "**** Religion" (Where is goes heavy in the final section) and one labeled "Haillie Sallasse, Up Your ***" (From the "How to clean everything" LP) Because you called the song **** Religion that is the version I will review.. However I am unsure where this recording originates from.. If someone could tell me I would appreciate it.

This was the first Propagandhi song I ever heard.. and I loved it. The slow reggae/ska sound humorously unites the sound with lyrics that speak in such a negative way about the Rastafarian religion and their prophet Haillie Selassie. Normally I am not a fan of early Propagandhi, however this song seems still to really stand out. The message is portrayed so simply (something that changed on later tracks) that to me this song is an anthem.

Being an Atheist brought up in a very middle class, conservative part of the UK, I can really relate to the lyrics with a passion. The angry distortion and shouting towards the end helps bring to the song to a successful climax (This is not achieved on the album version)

This song should be heard by EVERYONE.

Devo - Gates of Steel

I decided to do this song because Devo are such a cool band and I have liked most of the songs I have heard by them.

The song starts off with a drum beat and cool odd sounds. It reminds me of the old Super Mario playing days. After a while the lyrics come in and the song basically stays the same. It sounds like your average post punk song. The song gets a little to boring after a while and I have definetly heard better Devo songs than this one. Sometimes listening to them for to long gets quite annoying because of the singers vocals, he sounds so electronic.

The Dicks - Dicks Hate the Police

This is classic Dicks. Snotty, bluesy, mid-tempo 80s hardcore punk. Angry and abrasive. It starts with a brief riff of Big Black style cheesegrater guitar before the rhythm section kicks in. The opening couplet brilliantly sets the tone: "Mommy, mommy, mommy, look at your son/You might have loved me but now I've got a gun!" It continues in this tone. It's not big, it's not clever. The music's simple and the song is catchy. This song is for everyone who's pissed-off at the world, or looking for a reason to be. 9/10

Public Enemy - Burn Hollywood Burn

Public Enemy are one of my favourite rap/hip-hop groups, and one of the most influencial black rights group ever. This song is about Hollywood's exploitation of blacks in their productions, dubbed "blaxploitation", films such as Shaft.

The song starts with a dialogue, with some mention of movies, and then Chuck D suddenly starts rapping, "Burn Hollywood burn I smell a riot/Goin' on first they're guilty now they're gone/Yeah I'll check out a movie/But it'll take a Black one to move me." This song features Ice Cube on the second verse, which is pretty cool, and the instrumentals in between are covered by backing vocals singing "Burn Hollywood! Burn Hollywood!" The last verse is rapped by Big Daddy Kane, who tackles the Hollywood for not offering any roles to blacks apart from those of servants etc., and suggests a DIY alternative: "So let's make our own movies like Spike Lee/Cause the roles being offered don't strike me." When the rapping ends, it goes again into backing vocals, and then a dialogue between a producer and Flavour Flav, where the producer offers Flav the part of a "controversial negro", and Flav says "Yeah I'm with it, you mean someone like Huey Newton or James Brown, right?" and the producer replies "Well, it's a servant doctor that suffers a little bit and sings." To which, of course Flava Flav flips out a bit, and I inevitably laugh. The song features some more imcomprehensible dialogue, and then ends.

These guys always get me going and offer information, as well as offer some funny material (usually from Flavour Flav). This isn't near their best work, but it's fun.

Rage Against the Machine - Sleep Now in the Fire

I've never been a big RATM fan but this is a good song. The lyrics are pretty good, even if the vocals are slightly annoying but what makes this song is the main riff which leaves you unable to prevent yourself from at least headbanging slightly. This song would get lady liberty head-nodding along to it. It doesn't drag along too long, it's a great slice of power-fightin' hard-rockin' action. 8/10

Soophie Nun Squad - The Bovinity of Crust

It starts out with a generic crust sort of part about cows, and then a dialogue between the band and a mother. About cows. Then they sing about the punk scene and how there is a space for everyone, even cows. Then there's some more crust and then the cows talk about how they want better music, and then there's a dance music part about cows. Thent he song ends. :|

Immortal Technique - Freedom Of Speech

I've been meaning to check out Immortal Technique as of late. I've had my hands full of Rap and Hip-Hop and figured this would be an apropos song to do. The song begins with expletives, turning me off (in a narc way), then the beat becomes vivid. Again, more expletives, and it seems influenced/ripped a bit off of older Rap. Although the beat seems distant, the vocals are strong and militant. The solid vocals are confrontal and visceral, however, they're on the line of being whinny tautology. Before I started this Forced Listening I was listening to Binary Star, and I think I'm going to go back to it.

Nas - The World Is Yours

It starts off with a good beat, although the vocals are a little bit awkward, but it goes into a good verse, to be expected of Nas. The beat has a piano sample that's a bit off color I think, but the chorus gets really awkward to me. There's not much else to say about this, Nas is great, and this song isn't one of his best, but it's still good.

This is good stuff. It's got a good beat complemented by great piano and horn lines. The rapping flows brilliantly and has great rhymes and lines. There's lot of references to people like Malcolm X and Rosa Parks but it doesn't too preachy as the beat is so good. It's political but still danceable. A great track if you're a fan of rap. Ghost Mice - The Devil And My Family

I've never listened to Ghost Mice before, but right from the beginning I can tell I'm going to have a long relationship with this band. As soon as it opens, vocals and guitar, at once, I'm hooked. This is the simple, conventional folk that we see everywhere nowadays, and it's incredible. There's simply so much passion and feeling in the singer's (Evan Greer? It sounds like him) voice, I'm enchanted. The guitar is simple, but it's driving and it's bouncy and it backs up the singer's style wonderfully. As the song goes into a short violin solo, I'm stunned. It's also a very simple violin tune, but it's beautiful. I can also here the tambourine playing in the background, it's good percussion, not so noticeable, but still there, like a heartbeat. As the song progresses towards the end, I'm coming out of some strange semi-trance, and the singer's singing "And the devil sang with me! And the devil sang with me! On my shoulder like a friend that never liveees!"

Angelic Upstarts – Machine Gun Kelly (Oi)

Starts off with slow guitar ring outs and lazy spaced out drums, followed by an abrupt solo that reverts back to the gradual build up. After the second instant solo, theirs a more upbeat guitar passage which introduces the first verse. I enjoyed the vocals, not just because the singer has a good balance of grittiness and harmony in his voice, but it has that echoey sound heard only in older recordings. The tinny distortion and simple riffs also compliment the overall classic sound well. I was surprised to hear more intricate guitar work (solos and slides) scattered between the repeated verses. There’s a pause at the end with a breakdown of the main riff and the same drums used in the intro build up. The song finishes off with a quicker tempo and some nice back up vocals.

Overall: 8/10

Morning Glory- Return the Bomb (5:15)

A friend of mine has been telling me about Morning Glory for ages now. Typically I am way too lazy and un-determined to look up anything he suggests, but on the suggestion of a fellow MX-Punxer, I'll check it out.

Dang, long song. I like how the beginning is music, then switches over to just noise when the bomb drops. Very nice touch to the song. It's an intense song pretty much the whole time. I'm liking the singing at the beginning, but I wouldn't say it's hip-hop. Oh dang, now there's the hip hop. The song kinda adjusts, with that slide it makes it more of just a back beat. The slide reminds me of Rage Against the Machine. I like the chorus too where he sounds distant. I don't know if the rapper is in the band, or just on this song but I think he's an excellent touch. This breakdown thing at the end is cool. It's a good way to break up the song.

The song seems a bit repetitive, and loses it's intensity after the beginning but still pretty swell.

Dan C – Word Is Getting Out

Starts off with hard-hitting acoustic guitar, which remains constant throughout the whole song. So we have just one dude and his guitar rocking out, live. These simple, back to basics songs can be very refreshing. However, the vocals are a little irritating. He has a kind of up and down voice with a stuttered sound. Sometimes the singing goes down to more of a whisper, sounding better, but it doesn’t quite save it. The lyrics are basically about the wrong doings of contemporary society. Imagine Zack de la Rocha writing a song for H.R. of Bad Brains to sing with Chris Demakes playing ska on an acoustic. Not a great combination. The only thing I really liked was the lyrical content and the crowd cheering, but the sound just didn’t work for me.

Danzig - Going Down to Die

If I had to sum this song up in one word it would be sludgy. Or possibly uninspired. Or even ****ing boring, although that's two words, but boring just doesn't do it justice and ****ingboring as one word implies some sort of urgency this song does not have. This is the sort of song that will make your computer screen bleed with boredom and your speakers pack up and fall asleep until you play something less turgid, like the collected speeches of Richard Nixon. With vocals that flit between a godawful whisper and a curiously nasal strained bellow complemented by a plodding rhythm and the sort of guitar solos that you can tell were performed by someone with their eyes softly closed leaning back in awe of thge majesty of the music they're making. This is sort of music that necessitated the invention of punk in the first place. 1/10

The Copyrights – Graveyards Down the Street

There’s an all instrument intro with an upbeat, thick sound. When the verse starts, the palm mutes come in…of course. The vocals sound very much like those of the Bouncing Souls, a pop punk favorite of mine. The biggest difference between them and The Copyrights would be louder bass and more guitar fills. The overall melody wasn’t overly interesting either. In no way is it a bad song though; it could just use a little more definition. 7/10

It starts off with a bland sounding guitar, and quickly the drums kick in. Together, they make a good bouncy beat which I like. The vocs kick in, and at first it's pretty annoying, like this guy has a cold. However, it grows on you about a third of the way through the song. The chorus's main line, "But I know my black angel's waiting for me!" and the rest of the singing, its style coupled with the melody, makes this song sound like a heavy metal pop-punk tune, I'm loving it. Woody Guthrie - Pretty Boy Floyd

This is a stone cold classic. A simple tune with a simple story of a modern-day Robin Hood figure. The tale of a great anti-hero from a true American hero. The music is rudimentary and the song wouldn't work without it but it's not the focus. The voice isn't a singing voice but like his acolyte Bob Dylan, Woody never hits a wrong note in the classic tale set to music. 9/10

This song starts off with an extremely folky riff and some punky drums. Almost pscychobilly sounding. The vocals start and this guy's voice is really great. I like it a lot. Real unique. After the chorus there is some kind of solo, though, I can't really tell what instrument it is. But all-in-all this song is really good. I'll have to check out some more of this band.

Sticks and Stones - Sekai

I'm a bit familiar with Sticks and Stones, and from what I've heard they're not bad. This song starts strongly with a good riff and a building drumbeat before the vocals kick-in and they're unmistakably Jack Terricloth, though they don't sound quite as accomplished as his World/Inferno singing. People either love or hate his voice and I'm certainly in the former category. The music is pretty standard poppyish punk with good guitar tone, fast and catchy. At about 1:19 there's a section with just bass, singing and what sounds like faint keyboards. This song is full of little breaks, solos and fill-ins that hold your attention. They're not particularly original sounding but they keep you interested and make for a good, if not great song. 7/10

Jack Off Jerk Off Frig Face - We Don't Like Anything (Unless It's A Shotgun)

Never heard of this band. My initially impression is, "wow what a bad mix".. it sounds really un-produced (Which can be good) but this just sounds really rough and nasty.

Im not a great fan of this genre (and I do find it hard to see where Punk comes into this.. but im no expert on Cow punk soo...)

I’m not too keen on this track. Whilst the lyrics are not to be taken seriously, they just seem a little stupid (perhaps that just my sense of humor). The vocals do work fairly well together and the guitar riff in the verse is pretty groovy (Although this is certainly something lacking in the annoying chorus riff) Altogether song seems too long and it just annoys me after more than a minute.

I’m glad I heard this.. as it probably has helped expand my tastes. However I’m pretty confident this is not a track Ill return to.

Ripchord - Lock Up Your Daughters

Okay, I don't like to judge a book by its cover but from the picture on these guys' MySpace, I immediately want to stab them in the soul. The music, however starts off not to badly, bouncy ska-influenced indie, but the vocals sound like he's trying very hard to sound like the bloke from the Arctic Monkeys, which is a very bad thing. The problem with this song is that it sounds like so many other songs that you've heard every single day on the radio. It's distracting once and tolerable first time round but with subsequent listens it just grates and grates more and more, the crappy lyrics that could be taken as irreverent or deep by cretins, the fashionably punkish backing in some places, rising into pure generic indie for the chorus, it sounds like it was written by a marketing department, choreographed and edited by focus group for maximum appeal to idiots who think they are musical revolutionaries, coolness defined by committee, everything that is wrong with music. This song quickly escalates from a mildly diverting bouncy song, to something as hateful and soul-stabb inducing as that picture on the MySpace page. STAB! STAB! STAB! 1.5/10

Might I just start of by saying to sketcyjoe. Haha, I thoroughly enjoyed your review. It was really well observed and well written. I liked it.

Defiance, Ohio - Oh, Susquehanna! (Folk-punk)

Once again this is a band I have heard nothing of (Well I have heard of the band, but not their music) my initially impression is that I like this track alot more than the last one. It has a really nice acoustic guitar sound (something I really like). The strings well compliment the rest of the track with out being overbearing.

The vocals sound really good, they work well with the track giving it a more interesting sound. The female vocals in the second half aren’t quite so good (But are not a problem by any means) Im feeling a little too lazy to listen carefully to the lyrics, although from what I can make out they sound really good and well thought out. Perhaps if I listened to this band a little more I could really get into the lyrics.

The only bad point is perhaps that it goes on a little without any major musical changes.. However with bands like this it’s normally the lyrics that compensate (eg. Propagandhi)

Good link you provided as well. I may just download the rest of these tracks.

The Drips - Down Brown
Starts off pretty fast and steady. The transition into the vocals is kinda awkward though. I don't really like the vocals too much, and the guitar riffs are pretty generic. There isn't much variety in the song, barely any tempo changes. Actually, the drumers time/tempo doesn't change at all. This was a very boring and generic punk song. I won't be looking into this band in the near future.. 2.5/10

The Ergs-Kind of like Smitten

Like you said it's a pop/punk band. Still they're pretty easy on the ears and chucked full of corny love lyrics. Which kind of reminded me of pre-Kerplunk Green Day. The Guitar is also a little reminiscent of the Ramones, one part specifically reminded me of "Beat on the Brat". Like I said lyrics were a little cheesy but they didn't sound too bad. The female vocals also added more depth to the song. It was only 1:13 but it stands as typical power punk blast. Nothing about this band stuck out or seemed original to me.

Latex Generation - Fallen Angel

This is a well put together pop-punk song. A simple story of a girl trying to find herself or someone or something, melded to nice if unoriginal riffs with a few guitar solos thrown in for good measure. It's catchy. The guitar solos work well but stray towards 80s hair metal territory at times, which isn't a good thing but before it totally descends into guitar-wankery it brings it back with a fade-out singalong chorus that brings the song to a close. This isn't the sort of song that'll convert someone who isn't a pop-punk fan but if you like bands like Screeching Weasel or The Queers then you won't find anything that will put you off here really. 7/10

This is the first time I've heard these guys and I must say they have a really cool and unique sound. This song starts out with just vocals and a piano. Then drums and horns come in with a cool horn line. The lyrics to this song are pretty cool. Also, I quite like the vocals of this band. They sound really good. This song is really catchy and fun. They seem like a really fun band overall.

Bouncing Souls - Shark Attack

I chose this song cause I have HISMSV and AA, and enjoy them. Also, I saw them live and wasn't very impressed so it kinda turned me off from them, so maybe this is my spark to get back into them.

The song starts out w/ two people talking about the Bouncing Souls coming over their house and eating there. One guy is making fun of the Souls and the other is defending them. I think it's supposed to be funny, but it definently isn't. Then the bass comes in like the jaws, the shark is coming, playing. The actual song is pretty good musically, even though it is very short. Then it breaks back to the people talking again, and then back into the same verse again. There isnt much to this song at all. Yeah its fast, but the actual music playing is short and it's a sad attempt to be funny. 6/10

F - Citizen's Arrest

This song starts slowly with a lounge-like bass drums, but this is experiment in relaxing music is quickly abandoned and by the 7 second mark the song is in classic 80s hardcore mode. Fast, angry, shouty and unintelligible - brilliant. This is how hardcore should be done. The chorus has a singalong feel despite the fact you can't make out any of the words, and the band rip through the riffs at frightening speed. There's even a solo at one point which is surprisingly good, all with no let up in pace. If you like 80s hardcore, this is a band for you. Loud, thrashy and angry. Everything you'd expect from a band that X'd up whilst drunk and called the cops on their own shows. 8/10

The Fleshies - Big Green Teeth

The song starts with a distorted slow-ish riff and then quickly the vocals and rest of the band jumps in, it's very poppy. The vocals are very bratty and youthfull. The verse has a mix of 2 singers and 1 singer, the 2 songers chant a line then the main vocalist carry on etc, it's used to good effect. It's a fairly standard song and nothing special but it's nice enough.
Not much more i can add, i like the vocals and the it's a good song.

Greg Graffin - Don't Be Afraid to Run

I'm sure you're all aware of Greg Graffin's last "solo project" and I'm hoping this one will be less psychologically scarring. The song starts and it sounds like plain folk music, harmonica, guitar, no sign of heavy breathing anywhere (Okay, that's my last jerking off joke). It's quite soothing, if over-produced. Then the vocals come in, I like his BR vocals but they fit punk music better, ditto his lyrics, though they aren't bad, just simple. Sample lyric: "When the city barons bring their legal papers and guns/Oh darlin' don't be afraid to run". The song builds-up with drums and more instruments coming in, fading out and coming back in again, it does get quite repetitive though, towards the end there's an (electric) guitar solo and it descends into wankery slightly, what a surprise (I lied). This is an okay song but nothing special, he's better suited to punk music though. If you like simple slightly-overblown folky music then you should check this out, but if Greg Graffin messages you suggesting some webcam fun, darling, don't be afraid to run. 6/10

Love - Live and Let Live

I've heard of this band, but never listened to their music. It's jangly sixties pop in the Beatles' mode with pretty surreal lyrics. Love's Live and Let Live lifts off with the lovely lyrical line "Oh, the snot has caked against my pants/It has turned into crystal" which is a great mixture of the ugly and the beautiful, the mundane and the magnificient, and I really liked. The guy's voice is pretty soothing and fits the music. My only problem with this song is that it's too long and just repeats the same lyrics over and over for almost five and a half minutes with just a few cool guitar solos to break it up, still I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it. 7/10

Johnny Hobo & The Freight Trains - The Politics Of "Oh **** I Just Cut My Hand Open On A Broken Beer Bottle"

Right, this starts off with a simple but very melodic strum, and then the vocals kick in after ten seconds, "He talks about nothing using too many words/He talks revolution for an hour without using any verbs." These two lines already set out the self-parodying theme of the song, and its critical analysis of the hypocricy of apathy and inaction in the anarchist/activist movement. The lead's voice is wonderful, it's raw and powerful and you can feel his anger and disdain.

Now the drums kick in, and what I imagine is the chorus, "I'm sitting in the next room, slurring along to my isolation at the top of my lungs." The chorus of this song is one of my favourite folk singalongs, great stress-relief(:p).

Now is one of the most important lines in the song:

"But I swear to ****!
That a brick through a broken Starbucks window means more.
And I swear to ****!
That we'd fight for our system if we weren't sat down on the floor."

This is a great observation on the inaction of the movement, and that people seem to be eager to riot and smash a Starbucks, but when it comes to handing out anarchist literature or organising some form of direct action, too many people are lazy about it.

This song is powerful and the lyrics are clever and true, besides which it's an ace singalong.

Evan Greer - The Fence 4:37

Alright I have been hearing alot about Evan Greer, Erik Peterson and all this riot-folk business for quite awhile now but I never really looked into it. So here I am. Looking into it.

Obviously an acoustic guitar song. I pretty much had gathered that much. I like that little hammer-on thing he does. Sounds cool. Song is slower than I usually like. I don't really like his voice. It's kinda, wimpy. Nope. Don't like the vocals really at all. The lyrics are cool though. Stuff about stun grenades, and rubber bullets. He sounds better on the chorus. If this is the chorus. Don't relaly know. The guitar is sounding good, but I really can't get over his voice. I like the lyrics but the way it's sung and the voice itself, I just can not dig. When the girl joins in it sounds better. She'd be better off singing this on her own with no Greery boy. Back to that hammer-on thing I like. Lots of stuff about being in prison. Even if Evan sounds like a pussy he's obviously a hardcore inmate.

All in all, good song but really should have a different vocalist. Not into his voice at all.

Schoolyard Heroes - The Klaw

This starts off slowly and gently with minimal instrumentation and a woman singing. She's got a nice voice and the feel is somewhat sinister like something big is about to happen, which it promptly does with a big hardcore/punk song kicking in with some guy screaming his head off. Usually I don't like those sort of vocalists but this works, primarily as she's singing at the same time giving the rawness and rage a good counterpoint. The music's okay, very driving and militaristic at times but with slower sections as well. It goes back into the intro then into the fast section, it doesn't work as well the second time around but it's still okay. This song is over pretty quickly as there's lots of different sections and it's under 2:30 long. I enjoyed it. 7/10

Mischief Brew - Coffee, God And Cigarettes

This song has a couple of false starts, but the intro is pretty sweet, reminds me of Phil Ochs. His voice kicks in, raspy and piratey as par, so that's awesome. I don't like the lyrics too much, it's a song (as far as I can tell) about addiction and replacing booze and heroin with coffee and cigarettes, I don't know where God enters the equation. The meaning of the song doesn't in itself bother me so much as the writing of it; it just doesn't flow, it grinds across my spine, JESUS why didn't he rearrange the lyrics Goddamnit!? "Coffee God and cigarettes they're all that you need, all that you need just to be as free as me." Does this not make you angry? This is not written well! ARGH! Rewrite! I demand a rewrite!

7 points for a good Irish-sounding singalong, but minus 3 points for not writing it out properly. I'm sorry.

Tool - Part of Me

This song is awful, seriously bad. Every single facet of this song is just terrible. The music is that generic heavy-riffing that changes every 3 seconds so you can see how good musicians they are. The lyrics are banal to the extreme. There's about 4 lines in the entire song, which can work, but not when they're sung like they're the most meaningful thing ever written by vocals, which sound as though they're designed to appeal to every single headbanging pretentious ****head who thinks that this **** is deep in some way. It would be hilarious when he sings "I KNOW YOU BETTER THAN ONE MIGHT THINK!" in his heaviest metal voice if it wasn't so painful. What a wanker. What a cunt. What a despicable child-molesting pube-eating bastard. There aren't ways to describe just how bad this bollocks is, but I'll give it a go. Imagine being raped. Anally. By a horse. A horse with AIDs and a penis wrapped in barbed wire. At the same time an incredibly obese man is dumping blood-laced putrid feces into your mouth which is being held open by fishhooks. Simultaneously, your eyes are filled with pepper spray and your arm is being eaten by vultures. Your testicles are cut off with safety scissors and forced up your nose as a migraine the size of the equine member lodged in your behind erupts in the centre of your frontal lobe and you develop an itch in the middle of your back that you can't quite get to. The girl you've always loved appears to tell you she hates you and make fun of your genitalia before preceeding to have multi-orgasmic sex with your worst enemy in front of you while your parents turn up to say that they're not angry with you, they're just dissapointed and that you're currently being broadcast on every single TV screen in the world live. Imagine that. That's roughly on a par with how much fun this song was to listen to. Eran, if you tell this girl you like Tool, fine, we've all done things we've not proud of if the promise of sex is there, just make sure she's not going to play it in the bedroom unless you want to vomit into her face mid-coitus. Screeching Weasel - Hey Suburbia

I’ve heard and enjoyed a few Screeching Weasel songs, but never really got into them. “Hey Suburbia” starts off with a catchy pop-punk lead guitar riff over a steady drum beat , distorted rhythm guitar and low end bass. The lead sounds like butta ringing out into the verse, where the roughness of the song comes with the vocals. These guys play some sweet harmonies but the whiney, nasally singing makes em a pretty standard punk band. That’s how it’s supposed to be though, and it stays true with this song. The anthem-ic chorus is the high point, even though it has no build up and it’s camouflaged with the verses. At the end of the song, theirs a brief lay down of one guitar which leads to repeated “shut up’s” that signify the song’s “teenage ignorance is bliss” theme. I’ve heard it all before, but it stays with you more than others of it’s kind. Well played Screeching Weasel, well played. 8/10

12 Step Rebels - Banshee's Wail

The beginning of the song is slow and has a very ominous feel to it. Then all of a sudden at about 40 seconds into the song, it speeds up. Then it goes back to being slow and after some singing the vocalist screms "the banshee's wail!!!" and it speeds up once again. I like the bass and guitar of this song. The background vocals are minimal but they are decent. The song ends like it started with the slow ominous feel to it. Overall a cool song.

Angel City Outcasts - I'm an ACO

This song feels less like a punk song at times than a 50s rock and roll song played at three times the speed and for a moment in the middle of the song it drops all its punk pretensions and gives you a quick blast of the Chuck Berry-esque music that clearly informs this song. The vocals, lead guitar and bassline all manage to be simultaneously prominent without eclipsing each other and I particularly enjoyed the bassline which has a lot of little fills and even a solo towards the end. The vocals are standard punk shout with plenty of background vocals and a gang vocal sing-a-long towards the end. This is a good song though it does tire towards the end as it can't quite keep up it's breakneck speed for almost three and a half minutes. This song is good old-fashioned punk rock and roll. 7.5/10

First of I have got to say I really like this guys voice. At first I thought it sounded a little weird.. but I warmed to it (Any song like this sung without an annoying Blink 182 voice has got to be a good thing). The songs it fairly typical for the genre and doesn’t really offer anything greatly original or new.. but I suppose that’s ok. Its a fairly tight song and it works well musically. Its never something that I could really get into.. although its the kind of song I would probably want to dance to after a few beers.

My major issue with the song is the annoying use of "oi oi" Perhaps its just me but I personally find it really annoying and cliqued... but that’s just my opinion. Alot of bands use it so I guess others think its ok... whatever.

4 Ft Fingers - Proud

I starts off with a fairly promising pop punk intro. It goes into the verse, which is also fairly standard pop punk. The verse segues into a bridge/chorus which is, once aagain standard pop punk. Not that anythign is wrong with standard pop punk, this is enjoyable ****. Repeat. the strongest point in this song may be this second chorus, which goes nicely into a well executed bridge. After that, it's the standard stuff again.

Overall, this was a pretty cool track, it was a bit predictable, but reminescent of other great pop punk like Bouncign Souls, etc.

I give it a 7/10

Small Arms Dealer - A Fire In The Mine

The Fear and Loating intro is nice. The song, however, seems unfit for it because it lacks the same anomalous spirit and--to be more abstract--quality that the movie does. With lyrics like, "I don't need a hand to hold / I don't want to grow old," their mundane fashion is further sustained. Singer sounds raspy but fine, i.e. Small Brown Bike, Latterman. Despite not being any rarity as far as instrument ability, their lyrics prove nothing out of the ordinary. Regarding emulation and medicority being hand-in-hand with the governing propects of punk nowadays, I will not continue my further onslaughts of this band.

5/10.

Souls Of Mischief - '93 ‘til infinity

Without listening very much to rap myself, I would consider this to be old school. It just has that 90's sound. I actually found this to be pretty good. The beat is just a regular drumbeat but with a smooth keyboard sound in the background. The lyrics fit the music very well; they're all about chillin’. It's four (I counted 4) black Americans rapping about smoking weed, hooking up with ladies and competing with rival crews about who can get the most respect. The chorus just repeats, "This is how we chill from 93 'til (infinity)" to make the message more clear. As I see it this is a song about having a good time.
I wish more rap were like this, I enjoyed it!

The Flatliners - Fred's Got Slacks

I will admit that I am not the world's biggest fan of ska-punk, but for some reason this track really got on my nerves. It starts out pretty quickly and then just goes into the average ska style verse. The chorus is okay, but it still sounds pretty generic. The one thing I sort of like about this song was the vocals. I liked how the guy was justspewing out words constantly. Does he breath?

I have never listened to this band before but i have heard people talk about them a lot on this site so i decided to listen to them. I mainly really just listen to hardcore and punk rock but i like a lot of music so i figured i could like this. Me Likes Punk described them as 'gypsy-punk' and that sounds an accurate description to me as this could well be a bunch of gypsies playing punk rock.

The song started out much faster than i was expecting, i liked the singers voice. A string instrument then joined in making for a very folky-punk sound kinda reminding me of the folky sound the emo band I Would Set My Self On Fire For You do. This built up to a very sing-a-long like chorus that i enjoyed. The song sounded very fun to me and around 1:20s through the song there was a cool guitar bit. This was followed by a slow down of the song with just the singer and a thudding guitar riff. This then built up again to the chorus and then the song petered out. I found it pretty fun to listen to, interesting and not like much else i listen to. I think i might check this band out some more.

The Hope Conspiracy - Fallen

Kicks in with a driving bassline and drum beat, some serious head knocking **** here, and then the rest of the band jumps in. After a little verse chorus verse deal, there's a guitar bridge, which reminds me a bit too much of Metallica or some ****, but when that ends the 'core rages back on and the breakdown continues untuil the end of the song.

Overall 8/10

Okay so i listen to quite a lot of emo like indian summer, hot cross, rites of spring, off minor and stuff like that (i call any screamo just emo so **** off genre nazis haha) so i figured i'd listened to this as flagjacket described it as emo.

It started out with a cool guitar bit and the singer begins quietly - i like his voice. It continues with nothing standing out but nothing is too bad but i feel like i'm waiting for the screaming i've got used to from emo bands. I guess this singer sounds heartfelt and sincere enough that he doesn't need to stretch his voice to the limits. I definitely like how the song begins to quiet down and then starts building up again. With about two minutes left the guitars get heavier and play a nice riff that makes the song sound a bit more intense. The last few minutes are very good and it is a strong finish to a solid song.

I'd give it 7/10 mainly because i was probably expecting something a bit different.

Meat Puppets - Aurora Borealis

This is very much indeed spacey rock. Spacey rock that sounds like its from 1972, where people reached an intergalactic presence via drugs. There are no vocals to distract from the mood the Meat Puppets are trying to establish. Instead downbeat guitars echo with reverb to a very basic mid tempo percussion section. The song itself is also very repetitive and could use a little of the old whistle and hum. It gets somewhat messy in the middle with more distortion but only for a mere few seconds. Overall the song is pretty relaxing and well put together, but serves better as psychedelic background music. Its got ballsy artful ambition, yet it’s not too offensive or too mild. 7/10

Peeping Tom feat. Norah Jones - Sucker (alt. rock)

OK I've heard of Peeping Tom, and I know Mike Paton is involved, but I've never listened to them, so here goes nothing.

First thing I notice is the druggy male vocals which sound a little like Beck - clearly influenced by rap in the fluid spoken word delivery. The chorus is very hypnotic, with the female singer adding a distinctly seductive edge to the song -- overall, the vocals are very much centre stage on this song, which some glitchy background effects, spacey guitar and quiet drums completing the mix. It's like Massive Attack meets Beck meets Patton. A very chill song, which is quite enjoyable but nothing ultra special. 7/10

Unwound - Star Spangled Hell

Starts off with a winding guitar line, and then joined by drums and bass. I'm pretty sure this is from the early 90's. The gentleness of the intro is washed away with distortion and then the vocals begin. The vocals are alright. However, this whole thing still sounds like something high school kids recorded int heir basement, in terms of both quality and music.

HERE COMES THE BRIDGE. It basically repeats the same basic idea of the verse but with clean guitar. This is usually the part of the song where things are supposed to get tense, but it doesn't really do it for me.

The predictable conclusion of the bridge occurs with the guitars and drums pounding back into the verse, but this time with some octaves in the background with actually sound pretty good. But then it goes back into the verse again. Shame.

So the good part of this song was about ten seconds long. I give this a 2/10.

Stars Hide Fire - Still Breathing (Pop Punk)
Begins with a really cool guitar sound and strained vocals that remind me of high school.
The dual vocals are cool, but the voices are kind of weak. Either way, they're in tune and that's what counts for me. Plus, call and response is the shiz.

We get a little soft section and then transition into the chorus with a big vocal cue. Predictable, but done well enough to make it cool.

The band comes in full force for the first time at the chorus and it is a good choice. The parts work well together, but nothing groundbreaking. The vocals are probably my favorite part by now. The drummer is pretty nasty though. Lots of fills especially in the following verse section.
I also really like how they took the same verse material but redid it with the whole band.
Alright, at the bridge the band is showing their stripes. They go from the heaviest part of the song to the softest seamlessly. Nice drum production in the soft part.
Oh snap!
I thought we were destined for another rock section before the end but we get acoustic guitars instead first. Nice touch!
Ok final chorus, he's still breathing blah blah blah.
Overall, solid songwriting, bad lyrics and mediocre song for me. It was really nothing special but I wasn't suffering while I listened to it either.

Achilles - Dear Old Tyger That Sleeps (hardcore)

Good guitar work, especially during the chorus. The drums are also quite original The vocals however are pretty much typical hardcore screaming. It's not necessarily a bad thing it's just I've heard it before so many times. The verses are the real highlight of this song, punctuated by a sharp guitar riff, with dual guitar harmonies that are very enjoyable.

A very good modern hardcore piece that displays technicality and skill. The production doesn't really bring forward the ferocity Achilles is trying to display though. 8/10
