Well, I saw the poll about the "best beatles album," and it got me thinking. We have all these threads about all sorts of great bands, but there's no thread just for talking about The Beatles. So, I decided to make one. Talk about The Beatles, their solo careers, anything to do with The Beatles in here. As a starter question, what are peoples preferences: Let it Be or Let it Be Naked? I personally prefer Naked, I think its more polished, and I think The Beatles were more of a studio band then live band.

Sad... no love for The Beatles thread. I have a question for everyone: what is up with Revoluion 9? Like, what is it? I've hear rumors that it says "turn me on dead man" backwards, but its more likely than not one of those coincidence things, seeing as I don't see how anyone could purposely put a backwards message in a song. Anyone know of any meaning to the song, or is it just random crap?

Agreed, he had the best Beatles solo career.

I don't know, man, I always dug Lennon's stuff more than any. Paul was pretty good too.

I think Paul went with the Godly band where everybody was good at any instrument they picked-up while it seemed like Lennon went to bare essentials, just plain song-writing.

George definitly DID show his fancy guitar work (which is under-rated in and out of The Beatles) on his solo albums.

Ringo.......yeah.

heyjude8288
11-24-2004, 02:53 PM
Oh, sorry to double post, but Revolver, I think, really showed each individual song-writing member's own style that they developed into after the break-up. It sounds weird, but think about it.....

McCartney's songs were the high-produced rompy sort of pop/rock.
George's songs were few, but each one showed either a snappy feel or a sarcastic feel to it.
Lennon's songs were psych, and more on the edge of simpliscity, really focusing on the song-writing.

Just an idea I had. Good album.

Im trying to change your opinion, Im telling you to leave. You are not cool by being a "nonconformist".

Ohhhhhh... big word...
First off you might want to fix your typo as opposed to proving me to have been right, unless that's what you were really getting at.
Secondly, you can tell me to leave all you want to, but that won't change anything. If somebody is going to try to give me **** because of my opinion, I'm just gonna go right back at them.
And don't even try to say something like "Yeah... that makes you a Rebel, doesn't it. Go be a Rebel somewhere else". Why should you not say that? Because even giving me **** would make you a "Rebel" to begin with, and me retaliating puts me at the same level as you.

First off, just because they were big, doesn't make them good musicians. I was in a group lesson, and they forced us to learn a Beatles song. I had it nailed the first time through. I had only been playing for about six months too.
Secondly, I have to disagree about the White Album being underrated. That and Abby Road of whatever it's called are the only albums that I ever hear people talking about.

Ok, which Beatles album is the best in basically summarizing all the Beatles' talents?

Probably their last few albums. Just because they basically stopped writing and playing together, it was like four people got together to do one solo album between them.

i dont know if this has been mentioned...but in my Rock And Roll book (bio on rock history), i am on the chapter about The Beatles. It mentioned that in 1964 Bob Dylan offered The Beatles their first joint when he met them (or they met him, depends how you look at it). They said that within a year, they were basically smoking it everyday for breakfast. do you think this was for the better, worse? or did it really not make a different?

Do you think they would have taken the direction they decided to take in terms of songwriting whether they did drugs or not?

DeusExMachina
11-26-2004, 10:48 PM
I agree Abbey Road is the most revealing of their individual talents. As for the toking...

I definitely think it influenced them. I think they would have been creative no matter what, but the whole psychedelic nature of the 60's was largely influenced by drug use. I don't think some of the stuff (especially the eastern/hindu influence) would have come into play without drugs.

Well try and think of it with overall musicianship, singing, and songwriting. They dished Polythene Pam out in 5 minutes.

Ok,

White Album: This is obviously going to be between Happiness Is A Warm Gun and While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Between those two, I would pick Happiness.

Without including those songs, I would pick Dear Prudence or Yer Blues.

guitrguy

I go with happiness as well.

Sexie sadie is my other choice.

Woodstock
11-27-2004, 07:51 PM
Sgt. Pepper: Of course it would be A Day In The Life, but other than that, I would pick Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite.

Am I the only one here who isn't crazy about Lucey in the Sky with Diamonds?

I mean, it doesn't really have a very good melody and it's not even a good trip song compared to bands like Pink Floyd and the Doors.

Comments? Concerns? Flames for me (:( )?

The lyrics are the trippiest part of the song.

4.Sgt. peppers lonely hearts club band-with a little help form my friends

Dude! The transition from Golden Slumbers to Carry That Weight to The End is amazing. That's a good idea to talk about.

Favorite song on a couple albums, briefly:

Sgt Pepper: A Day in the Life
Revolver: For No One
MMT: Tough, probably Strawberry Fields Forever
Abbey Road: Something or Here Comes the Sun (Harrison REPRESENT!)
White Album: Blackbird
Let it Be: probably Across The Universe
