notice the fade in and out before the end of the song? Yeah, there's like 22 minutes in that gap.
Is it just a long, instrumental jam? Or are there more verses and such?

There's a lot of beatles footage on www.youtube.com they've even got the Beatles cartoons! One of my favourite videos is The Rooftop concert when they play Don't Let Me Down. When John comes out of the chorus and sings ga ga go go ja ja blu blu, and cracks up a little. I always enjoy hearing artists crack up in their songs. Bob Dylan does it often on his albums.

I know what your saying in tracks like Dig a Pony off of Let it Be you can here Lennon babbleing some random unintelligenble stuff.

The last post was on the 6th!!! So...
What are your Beatles DVD collections like? I've got "Paul McCartney: Live In Red Square," "Yellow Submarine" and some cheap documentary called "The Beatles: Liverpool to San Fransisco." I've also got "Imagine: John Lennon" and "A Hard Days Night" recorded on my digital cable. I tried to order the Help DVD awhile back from HMV, but they said it was discontinued. I fell to my knee's and wept.

It's funny reading about when they were filming Help! in the anthology book. They describe it as though there wasn't a single moment when they weren't stoned during that movie.

Oh goodness... the days when I thought 'Come Together' would be the only Beatles song I would ever like are long gone.
I know its probably cliche, but Sgt. Pepper is really one of few records I can sit down and listen to in its entirety.
Bandmates too, they were each so unique and talented.. Ringo is underrated as a drummer, Oh Darling! proves it.. as a songwriter/singer as well, who couldn't go for the No No Song now that ive mentioned it? :P Or hell, With a Little Help From My Friends!
Eh.. I'd write something about them all.. but im gonna give bed another go, and you know how talented they are as is. Ringo was just the first to hop into me mind.. arrr mateys. OK, time to go before someone wets my pants.
Got to wake up to listen to my new Abbey Road album tomorrow.. that might be what's keeping me up. :p Doesn't help that im on a huge Beatles kick lately..

I don't own any Beatles DVD's or movies. It's a shame.
I actually don't think a 22 minute jam would go too well with Helter Skelter. I don't know, The Beatles just don't strike me as a band that would do super well in jam situation.

I dissagree they are all very talented at the instruments they play, work well together, and have proved that they can hold their own in a solo. I think it would be amazing to hear a song that featured a drum solo by Ringo, a bass solo from Paul and John and George trading licks for a solo. Both John and George's style are different enough from each other so they could hold their own in two different types of solos. The only flaw I would see is isn't John on bass for that song? If they were to jam for that long I would rather hear Paul on bass, but he is a good guitarist as well so that might work well too.
rockinbass17

I actually think that George plays bass on that track.
Clapton would also be on guitar. That would be pretty cool. And Paul could just do these vocal things every now and then as the rest of the band jams.

Yeah Paul could also chime in with piano every once in a while too. Oh god if this happened there would be no quistion, this would be the greatest song of all time.

Piano in Helter Skelter? That's perposterous! That'd be awesome to hear that jam though. Do any of their solo albums have songs with long jams on them?
I cant speak for them all... but im pretty sure that Harrison has some jam-ish songs. Electronic Sounds and The Concert for Bangladesh come to mind.. but im not even 100% sure about those two. I think the live one (TCfB) does have a 16 minute bit.. but I believe thats by Ravi Shankar.
I'd also bet that McCartney has something.. just knowing him. Probably on a Wings record.. though I honestly havent heard any of them.
Leper
04-11-2006, 01:19 AM
Yeah I figured if anyone actually did, it'd be Harrison.
As stated at a much earlier point in this thread, easily the coolest Beatle.
Wasnt Harrison the one who came up with the sitar like playing of Within You, Without You? Damn, I love that song.
He's my favorite Beatle as well.. and of what post Beatles live stuff I DO have (which isnt much, something ill remedy with time) I like his the most.
Leper
04-11-2006, 01:33 AM
Sitar like playing? Is he not playing a sitar on that song?
Yea.. duh. Im tired. Nix the 'like.' Ive been off just about everywhere today.. heh.
He played everything on that song.. that I didnt know. I want to hear the whole 30 minute version.. kinda want to check out Ravi Shankar now too.
EDIT: Damn, I feel like a dumbass. *sighs* There's our magic, lost jam.
Harrison did it as a thirty minute piece.. that would be a fun jam for sure.. and editted it down.
Time for sleep... after a few more Sgt. Pepper songs.

Do any of their solo albums have songs with long jams on them?
Although it's not long at all, "The End" is kinda like a jam with solos by everyone, I think. I know for sure Harrison, Lennon, and McCartney all participate in the guitar solo part, but I'm not sure if Ringo does the drum "solo" (it could've been Paul).

Yeah well it might work depending on what direction the jam went, but I guess I was looking for a place for Paul besides vocals.
I can't think of any really long jams they did. I think the members of the Beatles got use to writing short pop songs and that was really all they knew. Though there are some jam tracks at the end of All Things Must Pass that has people like Clatpon, Ginger Baker, and Billy Preston (I think) on it. I guess some of those go on long enough to be concidered long jams. They are defenetly good and worth picking up the album along for.
Another jam would be Sgt Pepper's off of Paul's live album "Trippin the Live Fantastic". Its kind of short but longer than any jam he has done in the studio that I know of. Its really good though.

Hey...recreational drugs aren't a let down:p
Ok this is a little embarrassing, but I just remembered that I don't own the White Album on CD, only vinyl, and as a result I don't have any White Album songs on my computer. So could someone do me a BIG favour and recommend me some of the more trippy songs on the White Album, as it's been a while since I last listened to it, and I'm too lazy to put it on the record player at the moment...
Also there was some little known Beatles song that someone mentioned a while back in this thread, that they used the sitar on, but I don't remember the name of it...and I'm too lazy to look back...anyone remember what song it was?

Dont forget Revolution 9, though I dont like it much.
Heh.. no one can say that I have a weak Beatles collection now. :D
Picked up A Hard Day's Night, Help!, Beatles For Sale, Let It Be, Magical Mystery Tour, Revolver, and Yellow Submarine (which is the only one that disappointed me).. in addition to The White Album, Sgt. Pepper, Rubber Soul, and Abbey Road. I spent all night reading about The Beatles and listening to their music, which was a night well spent, in my opinion.
Revolver is definately one of my favorites.. im finding that I enjoy the later material a lot more than the earlier, poppier stuff.
NP: Beatles - Love You To
EDIT - And be sure to put the playlist for it on here when you're done!
I found this about the Helter Skelter 'jam' last night, I knew you guys would be interested, "During the July 18, 1968 sessions, a version of the song lasting 27 minutes and 11 seconds was recorded, although this version is rather slow and hypnotic, differing greatly from the volume and rawness of the album version. Another recording from the same day was edited down to 4:37 for The Beatles Anthology, Volume III. For the album version, recorded on September 9, eighteen takes of approximately five minutes each were recorded, and the last one is featured on the official LP."

I've been known to spend full nights reading the Beatles Anthology. I go a long time without touching it, but whenever I pick it up and start it, I can't put it down. It's fantastic. So I'd say that was a night very well spent.
I'm a little late on this, but I have A Hard Days Night, Help, Yellow Submarine, and Concert for Bangladash on dvd.

Thats cause it is their best album. Abbey Road drags on way too long and is just boring. Rubber Soul and Revolver are both great but they don't go up to the heights that Sgt. Pep's goes to. White Album just sucks and MMT is great but it never really feels like a full album to me.

I love that no singles were released (or at least didnt make it to number one?).. it was the first true 'full album' experience.. where one song leads into another. Its got a very live sound too, which I like.

Any of you heard that the Beatles will finally go digital within the next year? I read an article in the paper that said they're remastering the band's whole catalog and will bring it to the online music industry soon. I think it's a great idea considering they were a huge singles band, and the fact that a huge market is available to them.
Seafroggys
04-24-2006, 07:46 PM
Beatles album music > Beatles singles music by far, but whatever.
Its interesting to note that the CDs of their albums that you buy were remastered and originally pressed in 1987. A lot of other bands goes through constant album reissues and remastering, but for the most part, all of The Beatles' catalog was remastered using mid 80s remastering technology, save for Yellow Submarine, 1, and Let it Be Naked, but those weren't original albums.
Woodstock
04-24-2006, 07:51 PM
Yeah, I prefer albums as a whole, but there are millions upon millions of dollars worth if their singles are sold online.
And I dislike the remastering job they did on the first 1987 pressing, but maybe thats because it's 2006. I believe George Martin is helping in the effort, so I trust him.

Rubber Soul was my first Beatles album so it's really special to me. And it's still probably my favorite after Abbey Road. An interesting thing about Rubber Soul for me is that when I glance at the tracklisting and judge each song individually, it doesn't seem as strong as Revolver for example. But whenever I listen to it, I have to listen to it as a whole, it just blows me away. Every song on there works perfectly on the album even if they don't seem as perfect individually.

Rubber Soul was the album that got me into them. So obviously, I'm partial to that for beginners. Everyone will probably give you a different answer though. But here's my argument for Rubber Soul: It's the bridge from their pop to more interesting period. All the songs are accessible and easy to get into and have pop hooks that will keep you singing along. But there are also tinges of psychedelia, complex songwriting, unusual instrumentation and harmonies that will keep you interested.
Midnight Rider will probably back me up on this.

05-27-2006, 09:00 AM
If you're interested in their psychadellic material, the two best albums for that are Revolver and Magical Mystery Tour.
For their advanced pop stuff, Rubber Soul (as stated already) and Abbey Road, the latter being more polished and well done, making it sound much different.
For early pop material, Help! is the best of the pre=Rubber Soul albums.
It's hard really, their sound changed so much it's hard to recommend one specific album to start with,

Yeah, that and Revolver would probably be the best Beatles' starter albums. Abbey Road is also a good pick.

I'm listening to Let it Be now for the first time in a while. Such a good album. Billy really saved this album. He pulled The Beatles together so they could make a great album, even when they hated each other too much to look at each other. But he kept them together.

And a question about Billy did he actually write the song You Are So Beautiful or did he just cover it?

I almost bought a cd by him the other day but didn't because it didn't have any of his well-known hits on it (That's the Way God Planned It, Will It Go Around In Circles, You Are So Beautiful...). Judging from the samples I listened to, it was all instrumentals and was pretty awesome. I think I want some of his more commercial stuff first though.
I got a sweet Abbey Road poster and framed it above my bed. It's awesome.

Don't know how many of you check the alt/indie forum but someone said they would trade Bob Dylan for John Lennon's life (have Dylan die instead of Lennon basically.). Which is bollocks. Although I know if Lennon alive was still alive it would definitly tarnish his god like status that people have put him in. Which is good.
Not sure why I'm bringing this up. Maybe I'm just getting more and more sick about people calling Lennon the best Beatle or the best musician and somewhat of a god. Yuck.

I still like Lennon the best, probably Paul the least. George #2, then Ringo at #3
And the world would be a better place with Lennon around, because someone would speak out about all the evils of the past 25 years and people would listen.
I mean, c'mon, who do you think Americans would listen to? Bush or Lennon?
Actually, probably Bush sadly. Damn Souther Belt!

i think Lennon is overrated in some ways.
instead of being the all-loving peace symbol he is considered to be, he was a complete jerk. he neglected his son, cheated on his wife many times, and was the most egotystical band member.
and also he gets a rep of being the psychedelic experimental one, but it was actually Paul who composed the music for songs like "Tomorrow Never Knows", and Paul had been doing avant-garde experimental music for years but John refused to put any of it on their albums because he didn't like it. but then after John met Yoko he decided he liked it and made "Revolution 9" and made sure it got on their album.

i honestly believe people are overblowing the whole 'jerk' and 'egomaniac' aspects way too much in light of recent biographies (like Cynthia's). Its kinda the trend to do nowadays. And of course its easy to do, cause whose gonna defend him? Yoko, but the people doing the bashing think she's a pile of **** (While I disagree in the strongest).
Paul doing avant-garde stuff first? I'm kinda doubting that, given his actual track record (Wings anybody?)
Is Lennon perfect? No. But there are way more people that said he was the kindest person ever then people who say he's a jerk. Its just that negativity is much easier to publisize.

I'm pretty sure John wrote and composed "Tomorrow Never Knows." It said in the Anthology book that John came into the studio one day with it and had the idea of composing the entire song in the key of "C."
And yes, John had a lot of qualities about his personality that left something to be desired, such as neglecting his son. Keep in mind though, he never had a father, so his short-comings are somewhat understandable.

^^^ there was tension with or without Yoko. it's like if you don't like your roommates, and one day one of them brings home a meal that you don't like the smell of. eventually, all the roommates are gonna move out anyway, because of all the tension, and that meal that didn't smell good was just a factor that wouldn't have changed the outcome, had it been taken out. and plus i've seen the Rock n' Roll Circus, her part isn't that bad. weird and kooky, but nothing painful or unenjoyable.

i don't care about her musical qualities. I haven't heard barely any of her musical material to even judge.
And she did not break The Beatles. Read the Anthology dufus, since you're such a big Beatles "fan." One of them said something to the extent of "How could 2 women break apart 4 strong men?"
IMO, even though indirectly, Paul broke up The Beatles. People just can't accept that though, and use Yoko as a scapegoat.

Paul was a control freak. The other 3 always seemed to have problems with Paul. He didn't like the fact Alen Klein was brought in (even though later he was right) because he wanted to control the band. And he had Linda, who was almost as bad as Yoko if we're talking about interfernce in the band, but no one ever talks about her.
Plus none of the other three wanted anything to do with Paul for at least several years after Abbey Road was cut. In fact, John, George, and Ringo were talking about kicking Paul out and getting Klaus Voorman to fill his shoes in late 69-early 70.

well then you need to consider the bias, being that it's from his wife he had before Yoko. not saying that it isn't true, but i don't know if that's the best source.

Please. Paul was by far the best all around musician of the four. He had undisputably the best voice, he was a great bassist, pianist, guitarist, and drummer. George? He was a very good guitarist who wrote some great solos but he was far from amazing. Oh but he played sitar so I guess he must be an excellent multi-instrumentalist.

Paul's tied with John as my favorite, but as far as the "best voice" thing goes, it's a matter of taste. i think he might have had the most control over his, but it's a matter of who's vocal tone you like best, for the most part.

yes, getting information on someone whom your former husband cheated with on you is a great source!
Anyway, Paul was the best bassist and piano player in the band, no doubt about it, and not shabby at the drums either. He also had technically the best voice, but I prefer the tone of John and George's voice though. John was also the better songwriter (when they wrote seperately) and George was the better guitarist. Hell John was a better guitarist then Paul.

Yeah but Paul wasn't really a guitarist. And no, John was a pretty terrible guitarist. Besides, that's why I said he was the best all-around musician.
Sure, which voice you PREFER is subjective but technical ability is objective and honestly, Paul had a bigger range, more power, and was more versatile.
