Heh, I went out and bought a shirt from JC Penny's just for tomorrow. It's horribly ugly but I don't care, it has John in New York picture on it with Imagine lyric's on the back.

Those are the kinds of shirts that i'd kill someone to steal them.

Today is the day and I would like to say a little on John Lennon to commemerate his soul.

Born on October 9th, 1940, John grew up in an englsih town called Liverpool. Having had both parents abandon him, he lived with his Aunt Mimi. It was a tough life for John, but he lived through it. He stared his path to the greatest musical influence of all time when he picked up a banjo.

He instanly became obsessed with the banho, and eventually became a Guiatrist. He started a band called "The Quarry Men," and would play around town. At one of these gigs, his friend Ivan introduced him to another friend of his, a kid by the name of Paul McCartney. They instanly hit it off and soon Paul joined the band. He rode with this kid on the bus who played guitar, and asked him to join them. His Name was George Harrison.

Now all they needed was a drummer. They were tough to come by in Liverpool, but one guy fit the bill. His name was pete best, and he had the one thing that mattered. His own Drum set. So tehy formed, and they started to play gigs around town.

One of these gigs was at a place called "The Cavern, and a music store owner had come by to watch them, Brian Epstien. He was seduced by what he heard, and started to look around for a producer to produce them.

After several refusals, he came across a producer name George Martin, and He agreed to produce them. Brian was estacic, and told the boys right away. There was a condition, he told them. They needed a new drummer, Pete wasn't cutting it. A man name Richard Starkey fit the bill, but he was already in a band called "Rory and the Hurricanes." They saked him if he would join, adn he agreed. And so the path to stardom began. They had widespread popularity all over the Continent, and soon to be all over the world.

The beatles had many succesfull albums (sorry I skipped over the albums but this is a tribute to John, and I want to do a bit on his life after The Beatles and I don't want to take up 2 pages). In 67/68, he met a woman called Yoko One. He was instanly fell in love. It was akward, and they spent alot of time away in his house. Eventually he brought her to the recording sesions. The rest of the band got fed up (once again sorry about skipping stuff) and the band went there seperate ways.

John did some solo albums, and things were going well for him. He had a couple #1's, and enjoyed making music. He then decieded to take some time off making music, and live with Yoko. After a couple years, he decided to come out and make another album.

It was December 8th, 7:50. He walked out of his apartment, and out of the Shadows jumped a man. He shot John in the back. The Shots would sound around the world. He died that day at 8:15, Dead on Arivvial.

Trully a hero of our time, taken from us to soon. John Lennon Rest in piece.

Sorry, I know its a bit long and I cut some stuff out, but It's John, and I could have made it a lot longer.

John We Honour You.

Actually John was shot at 10:50, died at 11:15. Well that's eastern time, I'm not sure if you live in a different time zone.

I wish my parents were cool and would let me go into NYC and go to Strawberry Fields this afternoon. I've just been watching the news and listening to John all day. I wish I was one of the thousands of people at Strawberry Fields. People traveled from ****ing Scotland and my parents wouldn't let me take a 45 minute train ride to NYC to be there. I'll try to go tomorrow or after the weekend to make up for it though. It's just such an unbelievable tragedy that he died. I wore my Lennon shirt today.

Tell Me What You See skips horribly for me whenever I try to play it. I should try to clean some scratches off Help, because that and Act Naturally skip terribly. All the other songs are fine, but it's still annoying. My copies of Sgt. Pepper's and Abbey Road used to skip even worse, but since I cleaned them, they work fine. I need to do the same for Help now. I've always liked Paperback Writer, it's a rockin' song. One song, however, that I've never really cared for is "Back in the USSR." I'm not sure why either. It's not like it's a terrible song in any way really. I've just never liked it. The only real reason I can give is that it seems like a very cliche'd rock song, in that it sounds too much like other bands at the time (the Beach Boys especially) and it just doesn't sound very unique, unlike most of the Beatles music in the later years.

I'm sure most of you disagree with me but meh, that's just how I see it.

/orgasms I just heard the song "Don't Let Me Down" I think it's on Let It Be...Naked but it's on the pastmasters I was reading a review on allmusic and they said it was a good song.

I freaking love it, the vocals are amazing. Anyone who hasn't heard it...D/L IT NOW!

Meh. I was never really a fan of Don't let me Down. Just another John to Yoko song.

Wait, someone other than Brian Wilson did any of the songwriting at all for the Beach Boys? I am shocked.

 Mike Love, the lead singer, helped write a couple of there songs, including Little Honda and Fun Fun Fun.

I've start listening to The Beatles lately. They have some really good songs, but I can't listen to too much of their music at once because it's too simple sounding.
My favourite Beatle's songs are Eleanor Rigby, I Am The Walrus, and Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.

I've been diggin alot of The Beatles too. I've been re-discovering the middle era works. Revolver and Rubber Soul just knock me flat when I listen to them. Favs have to be Taxman, Ticket To Ride, Tomorrow Never Knows, Nowhere Man, Flying, Come Together, and A Day In The Life.

Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds is the only song on Sgt. Pepper's that I skip occasionally. I like the chorus but the intro is kind of irritating.

The Beatles are supposed to be simple as it's the first pop band every basically.

Leper
12-21-2005, 01:58 AM
Nah they're not the first ever. Buddy Holly and Elvis were writing pop tunes before the Beatles came around. I think the Beatles were simple because that was all the record labels had patience for at the time. They were forced to keep it simple if they were going to survive.

I love Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds. Such a mellow, trippy song. I think I actually like the intro and verses better than the chorus.

Revolver is awesome. I went through a phase the last 2 weeks where I just listened to Rubber Soul and Revolver constantly. Over and over again. It's hard to stop once you start listening to it. I've been listening to She Said, She Said a lot too. I suddenly realized how awesome it is.

Edit- An yeah, making avatars with Paint is tough. I took the cover of Rubber Soul and put Christmas hats on all the Beatles but it didn't look to good. And then I found this pic in a google search for Bob Dylan and it works well. So if anyone was wondering, no I did not creat this amazing avatar.

But seriously, I pose a question to all you fans and fanatics: how many of you think the Beatles are the greatest rock band ever to have lived? Because I seriously don't. There are many guitarists alive now *coughOmarcough* who give George and John a run for their money; many drummers who could rape Ringo with one stick; many bassists *coughPaul Turnercough* who absolutely kill Paul, etc. They played bog-standard 12-bar rock half the time, and their lyrics ("Have you seen the little piggies...") were not nearly as good as, say, Brandon Boyd's or Thom Yorke's. They have some merit as a joke band, though... :p Even one or two of their jazzy ballad-type songs such as Yesterday, whilst original, sound like any three songs from Elton John's repertoire.

I personally dislike the Beatles. They were highly inventive, I'll give them that, but far from the greatest rock band ever to have lived. Discuss.

rockinbass17

^Well, no, maybe they aren't as technically good as a good amount of musicians today, but withou the Beatles, those musicains would never have even gotten interested in music in the first place.
The Beatles layed the foundations for hard rock, psychadellia, prog, and many other styles of music.
They progressed so dramatically, changing from album to album, even song to song at points.
And a "greatest band ever" title is left up to the opinion of the listeners.

mutant!
12-22-2005, 01:57 PM
Yeah, I know. They were inventive. I'm just trying to determine how many Beatlemaniacs think that the band can honestly be called the greatest ever. Because, as you said, it's left to the listeners' opinions. Any musician with an ounce of wits will not label any band "the greatest ever".

They are the most succsesful band ever, the most innovative band ever, and the most creative band ever. They wrote some of the best songs ever written, and their songs feature the best vocal melodies ever written.

But to call a band the greatest of all time is only a personal opinion you can't prove that they are the best band. But there is certainly no band better then them at the craft of songwriting, sure 90% of guitarists out there today could out solo Lennon...but Lennon was the rhythm guitarist and a great one at that. And sure many guitarist could play faster than George Harrison.

But is Clapton, Richards, or Vai capable of writing songs like "Here Comes The Sun," "Something," and "All Things Must Pass," the only who can come close to those songs is Clapton and even he is not as good a songwriter as Harrison a better guitarist maybe but songwriter and signer no.

And the same goes for Paul, sure flea could out play McCartney on the bass. But actually McCartney is better than at least 80% of the mainstream bands out there today. I don't think I've heard a song where Paul played the same thing on the bass as the guitar.

And who cares if Paul's not the best bass player in the world, how many other "bass players" can say that they know how to play the bass, the guitar, the drums, the piano? And how many of them can say they've written and sung some of the best song's ever made.

Now Ringo...the one everyone loves to take shots at. Has anyone actually listened to Ringo's drumming? Sure he can't compare with Mitch Mitchell, John Bonahm, and Neil Peart. But he's alot better than what people give him credit for. Try listening to Rain, or Come Together (there's some great fills in that song), and for his one and only drum solo try listening to The End. I've noticed that he's actually a great drummer, and anyone who says he does nothing but simple beats has probably listened to only the first 5 tracks on The Number One's.

And John, his guitar work is mainly rhythm, and sure the rhythm in the beatles songs are not complex, and they don't use all the crazy types of chords augmented, etc. But the chords fit the vocals perfectly (Hide Your Love Away, Eight Days A Week). And most of the beatles songs make use of lots of chords and are rarely just three chord songs an exception maybe Love Me Do but that's extremley early Beatles.

So though Led Zeppelin, Cream, and Black Sabbath may have been more complex (and if being complex makes you more talented), more talented indvidually. None of those bands as a whole are as talented as The Beatles. If were gonna face John off against Jimi Hendrix, Paul against Flea, Ringo against Neal Peart, and George against Eric Clapton...on their instrument skills, I can bet the members of the beatles will not get the highest votes (maybe George would win.)

But if were comparing The Beatles as a whole, no band has matched them.

mutant!
12-22-2005, 04:35 PM
Yeah, my "all-stars" band would have been Elvis, Jimi, Jaco and Hal Blaine, but anyway.

They are the most succsesful band ever, the most innovative band ever...
Objective troof.
...and the most creative band ever...their songs feature the best vocal melodies ever written.
Subjective troof. (ie Not necessarily.)

I know Ringo is good, I happen to like Come Together a lot (but that may have something to do with the fact that it doesn't sound like the rest of their stuff at all :p). I know Paul is good too. My best friend is a total Beatles fanatic and I've heard the phrase "George Harrison is an underrated guitarist" kerjillions of times before, and now you guys have confirmed that (or the notion, at least). I know John was a good singer and songwriter.

My band also consists of four people. I play guitar, piano and sax in the band, and do lead vocals. Bread (the Beatles fan) plays bass, piano, recorder and sax, and does the Frusciante backing falsetto thing. Johan does turntables and MCing. David plays drums and guitar and has a good singing voice too. So there, a little high school band has just as much instrumental diversity/talent as the Beatles.

I don't think I've heard a song where Paul played the same thing on the bass as the guitar.
If you could verify this for me, it would improve Paul's standing in my eyes.

Sure, Yesterday is a good song. I happen to think Mad World is better. Assuming I'm right, here's the question: who's the better band? The Beatles, because they wrote a lot of good songs? Or Tears For Fears, because they wrote one awesome song?

There's also the matter of taste. As far as my knowledge of the band goes, a vast selection of their music is totally senseless. One can only dig so deep for meaning before it becomes artificial and you are only trying to make up something to justify an LSD-induced hallucination-turned-song.

Ah, hell, there's a million points I could bring up but it's 12:33 AM and I'm tired, and I don't really want a flamefest. You guys can like who you want to and I'll respect that. My issue was just with people who call the Beatles "The greatest band ever" and think they're being objective, then have very little evidence to back their claim. Love you guys. :thumb:

That doesn't make you diverse, talented yes (not as much as the beatles), but diversity would depend on how many styles of music you actually play.

If you could verify this for me, it would improve Paul's standing in my eyes.

Well I don't know the bass to everysong, but I do have about 50 beatle songs on guitar pro. And Im I've yet to see the bass line the same as the rote note of the chord played on guitar.

Sure, Yesterday is a good song. I happen to think Mad World is better. Assuming I'm right, here's the question: who's the better band? The Beatles, because they wrote a lot of good songs? Or Tears For Fears, because they wrote one awesome song?

Is that a serious question? I would go with a.) a band who wrote lots of good songs. All the one hit wonders in the world don't compare to bands that consistently write good material.

There's also the matter of taste. As far as my knowledge of the band goes, a vast selection of their music is totally senseless. One can only dig so deep for meaning before it becomes artificial and you are only trying to make up something to justify an LSD-induced hallucination-turned-song.

Their early stuff is mainly love songs, which is not sensless, then there middle stuff is more serious stuff, then there experimental phase, some songs like Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, and I Am The Walrus may strike you as sensless crap written while on LSD. But I don't think they ever wrote a song while on LSD. And actually John and Paul are widely considered two of the top best songwriters of all time.

I'm not making a flamefest, just having a debate. And I think that the following would work as evidence in claiming they are the greatest band ever;
- Over 1 Billion Records Sold Worldwide
- The Most Succesful Group Of All Time
- Sgt. Pepper is the fastest selling album in the UK
- A Record 20 Number One Singles
- In 1964 the top 5 songs on the charts were all by the Beatles
-The White Album is number 8 on the top selling albums of all time
- They broke in 1969 and 32 years later there Greatest hits "1's" released in 2001 became the fastest selling album of all time.
- And 36 year later Paul McCartney has set the record for fastest sold out concert (14 Minutes).

Thats just all I can think off right now :)

Jazz (including funk, cool jazz and fusion), blues, metal (including elements from '80s and '90s metal), rock ('90s mostly, but '60s/'70s too), classical (especially Bach-style Baroque stuff and Chopin/Rachmaninoff-influenced Romantic stuff) and pop (as far as songwriting is concerned). Anyway, I was talking about instrumental diversity.

Yeah, definately. Did you know that when it was released some people thought it was harrison telling them to drop out of society! ("please don't belong")

it was actually about him waiting for someone.

Did they not listen to the line right after that "please don't you be very long" lol...that very ruins the belong idea.

What did they do for music? I know this is an extremely idiotic question, but I'm really not sure. I know they did SOMETHING, and I absolutely love listening to them, but I want to know what all of you think they did for music. Personally, I believe they were compositional geniuses, but that still leaves the question of what they did.

For the music industry? Well they were the first band to do many things in the studio and try new things, they were one of the first bands to be open about drugs which helped psychedelic music become popular and paved the way a lot of bands. They made the music scene do a 360 and sorta start leading away from the Hermins Hermits and other bands of that sort and more in the direction of rock and roll written and performed by the bands. And of course they were the first band from the 60's to 'conquer' America which lead to other bands.

What Med said may not seem like too much different then now, but in the early 60s was an astronomical difference in the way music was created. I believe of all the great points Med pointed out, the studio experimentation was the biggest.

Before then, and the Beatles themselves showed it pre Rrevolver, All bands had one uniform outlook of who they were and what songs they made. Every song was pretty much the same structure, lyrical outlook, and style. Though this may not be 100% true, It generally stood as a conception of music of that era. When The Beatles took there songs, and changed the whole way they were developed, and even through crazy effects in there to develop a fuller more meaningful construction to each one, it was amazing, though some may view this at the time as Satanic (Revolution 9 anyone?). The 60s were a time of change and the Beatles are largely responsible for the start of it. When the Who were homewrecking punks, Stones were mind polluters, Led Zeppelin were Satan Worshippers, the Beatles stood out with there unending proggresive songwriting skills to break away from all that was right in 60s music and pave for everything to come.

Might not seem like much to do, but for the era they exsisted they did a damn good job

The Beatles are such a good band. Each musician was good at wat they did. THe songwriting was amzing. It is pretty cool to listen to songs they wrote about their drugs such as Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (LSD). Simply amazing band. O ya and Paul McCartney is great live. Eleanor Rigby is an amazing live song. Stupid Yoko Ono got in John Lennons head which broke up the band.

Well my favourite Beatles album list (post Help!) now goes as follows:

Revolver
Magical Mystery Tour
Abbey Road
Sgt. Peppers
Rubber Soul
White Album
Let It Be

I can't rate Yellow Submarine yet because I don't have it and thus haven't listened to it in it's entirety.

It's so hard to put any of them last, in fact, I'll just say the last three are all a tie.

Sgt. Peppers
MMT

I'm crazy?

I like Abbey road but I wish it would only have these tracks on it: 2, 3, 7-9, 11-13, 15-17. I think that would be a masterpiece maybe have some more tracks in there. But I've never really liked Come Together, and the rest just don't fit in with what I would've liked to see Abbey Road be, which is an album full of short songs that sorta tells a story. So a concept album basically!

Abbey Road

I love Revolver. It has such a great assortment of songs, and in my opion it is the first time George had a good song he wrote by himself(taxman is a great song, and he had some others on there to). Tommorow Never Knows is a wicked osng, so experimental, Elanor Rigby is a great song, with no Beatles playing an instrument on it.

Hey, greetings. Been away for a while but have been catching up on the discussion.

Got a book for Christmas -- The Beatles by Bob Spitz

Just recently published and is amazing. Can't put it down. A hefty work, about 900 plus pages, but worth the read for the info. Spitz is a biographer who has done Springsteen, Elton John and Dylan. Mostly works New York Times and Washington Post. No fly by night here.

Answers most the questions I see here on who did what and when it really happened. Like yes, a session drummer named Andy White played on 'Love Me Do.' HOWEVER, that was on the first session demo press for Parlophone. The tempo of the song was slower and George Martin didn't like it. Martin brought them back in the Abbey Road studio a month later and recorded it again in the faster up-tempo version we are all familar with. That's the released version we all know and love, and YES, Ringo did the drums on that, the final cut. Cool, huh?

Read Med57's reply on what the Beatles did for music. Very well put, especially the instrumental experimentation.

The effect we take for granted called 'phasing' was created in the sixties by running two identical tapes of music in perfect sync together to achieve that 'swooshing' effect. It was very tedious and time comsuming, but ground breaking none the less. It came from Abby Road studios and the term 'phasing' was coined by John Lennon.

Well, thankye for the accolades, people. Much appreciated.

By the way, I heard talk of the Stones in here. Incidentally, the Stones may never have got their start if the they hadn't been introduced by John, Paul and George to Decca Records president Dick Rowe in 1963. One of the Stones first hits was a 'throwaway' number by John and Paul called 'I Wanna be your Man.' The Beatles later recorded it with Ringo in the lead, but first it was given to the Stones. Early on the Beatles wrote songs for many other bands. When they had first gotten to number one in Britian (before making it in America) their songs were sought after by other artists. The Beatles gave them away as they thought having credit as songwriters on other labels would boost their careers faster.

I always point to ELO's cover of 'Roll Over Beethoven' as a breakthrough in rock. Besides, just as some rock legend collaborations can be silly and contrived, a few are so right in the level of taste it's uncanny. The Willburys -- Dylan, Orbison, Harrison, Petty AND Lynde. That was made in rock heaven.

Not to mention Jeff's ace production skills. Have you seen the Concert for George? Jeff produced that, and I think his cover of "I Want To Tell You" is pretty good. Although Tom Petty sounds so bad on "Handle With Care"

Didn't he finish up Brainwashed after George died also?

Yeah, with Dhani.

Seen it? Heck, I own the DVD. Let's be nice and say Petty had an off day. Petty I can take or leave, but the roots are there, and that's what I find most impressive. I respect that more so than say, a member of REM stating the Beatles were only a pop band and REM was so much deeper than the Beatles ever were. Funny though, how Beatle-esque REM was in their songwriting and arranging.....
