Isn't "Waiting on a Friend" a Rolling Stones song?
Seafroggys
10-22-2005, 01:07 PM
Yeah it definitally ain't a BEatles song, unless its a rare bootleg or something. Not an official album release, because I would know of its existence, and I've never heard of it before.

If he does mean the Rolling Stones song, then he has to be horribly misguided or trolling, because it came out in 1981 and sounds nothing like a Beatles song.

One was my second CD, and I don't really like it. All their really really good singles (Revolution, Strawberry Fields Forever, the Inner Light, etc.) isn't on there. And the whole concept of the CD is fraud anyway, since their first number #1 hit isn't even on there (please please me), and love me do, something, and come together never made it to #1.
I'd much rather get both Past Masters, that way you have all their singles on two CDs.

Speaking of tapes! My friend had some beatles tapes and I put them in his tape player...haha and his tape player appareantley is screwed. And it was played in ultra slow motion, on the song "Don't Bother Me" sounded like it was sung by Satan. It was pretty funny.

Divine intervention, clearly.
My first Beatles album was Revolver. Even though I was raised on them, I knew practically every song off Rubber Soul, Sgt. Peppers, Abbey Road.

My first was Sgt. Peppers although in 3rd grade while playing N64 me and my best friend would listen to Yellow Submarine from One on repeat. Which is one of the main reasons why I hate that song now. I heard it for about 2 hours each day for like 6 a year before we discovered the CD had more good songs.

Funny story about "Yellow Submarine"
When I was in sixth grade, I got in trouble for something so I had to wash a bunch of muddy gym equipment. So I was in this janitor's closet thing hosing down all the equipment, and I started singing "Yellow Sumbarine" and 3 teachers came out and told me to stop because I was disturbing their class.

APparently the Beatles were a great live act back in the Cavern/Hamburg days, there's just very few audio and visual records. Brian Epstein really cleaned them up, and we have what we have.
Live shows didn't really get good until the later 60s anyway.

Playing live shows would definitely be fun, but I would definitely thrive on working in the studio. I love the concept of experimentation which the studio allows you to do. I don't think I'd find many things more fun than tinkering with my songs until I thought they were perfect.

None of the Beatles are exactly "virtuosos" of their instruments.
But George is incredibly talented.

just cause ringo isnt a flashy drummer doesnt mean he isnt good, he kept a steady beat, didnt try to out do himself, he did exactly what a drummer should do, and drummers that can actually keep a beat are becoming ever more rare.

Every band needs a member that isn't very flashy, one who is just happy to be there, and thats Ringo. He kept a quick, up-tempo beat and never did any flashy drum solo's. Above all else, he was a key part of the Beatles. Would it have worked as well with "John Paul George and insert horrible name here?"

Alot of people like to say Ringo was a poor drummer whilst only looking back into the 60's. What most people dont realize is that he grew and became and even better drummer. You can hear in alot of the later albums (The White Album, Abbey Road & Let it Be) that he really stepped his drumming up a notch. Songs specifically like "Helter Skelter" "Yer Blues" "Ive Got a Feeling" and "Oh Darling" really show his true ability. Theres still a handful of other songs.
Also, I saw Mr. McCartney in columbus Ohio on the 22nd of October, and let me just say, it was the most incredible performance i have ever seen. 3 hours, non stop, no intermitions, just straight live hits.
Some of the noteables were "Fixing a hole" (Done solo on piano) "I will" (solo Acoustic) "Please Please Me" and "Helter Skelter". I highly suggest buying the DvD when it comes out. Youll thank yourself for doing so.

Ringo is probably one of the best drummers in terms keeping time. His style was very simple but he kept time and fit in perfectly with the music.
George was the most instrumentally talented Beatle IMO, he was great at so many instruments. Paul was a great bassist and a great pianist. He also played guitar and as previously mentioned, drummed on Back in the USSR. John was a very solid musician, but was not as instrumentally talented as George and Paul. Then you have to factor in songwriting talent.

I would like to point out that Paul McCartney actually may have recorded a few of the drum tracks for Ringo. Paul can play all instruments also in one interview John was asked "Is Ringo the best drummer in the world?" and John replied as a joke, "He isn't even the best drummer in the band!"

While I love George just as much as the next guy, and would consider him the best guitarist in the band, Paul could play a ton of instruments. His first solo album featured him on every instrument. The only other person on the record was Linda McCartney helping with some backing vocals.

I agree about Ringo, as most of his songs were written by the others, but I would have to disagree on Geroge. He usually wrote 2-3 songs per album (not including pre-Rubber Soul), and had some great classics like Taxman (which I just found out that Paul plays the solo for) Here comes the Sun, While My Guitar Weeps and Something, the only #hit for the Beatles not written by Lennon/Mccartney.

He wrote a lot more than that. John and Paul put a "two song per record" quote on George. That's how he could release a 3 LP recording in 1970, immediately after the Beatles broke up. It was a bunch of songs he'd written before but hadn't had a chance to put on albums.

Yeah from around 65 or 66 till the breakup, George was writing nearly as much John and Paul.
Maybe not quite that much, but he was writing a ton of stuff. John and Paul often dismissed it without giving it a chance though. John and Paul wouldn't even take While My Guitar Gently Weeps seriously until George brought Clapton in. George was the coolest Beatle.

The only Beatle post I have is one with them from Sgt. Peppers but its one of those ones with all the little pictures that make up the big picture (if that made sense?) its pretty neat, then I have a John Lennon one.
I like the Let it Be one, I just like that album cover.

Speaking of Let it Be, I don't think that album gets enough credit. I've been listening to it a lot recently and most of it is fabulous.

Yeah Let it Be...Naked (its been years since I heard the original) is a truly great album. Two of Us, DOn't Let Me Down, I Me Mine, I've Got a Feeling, and Dig a Pony all kick lots of ***. And of course Let it Be as well.
When Paul did I've Got a Feeling at the show, he kicked *** on it. I love that song.
Speaking of which, I convinced my guitarist in my alternative band to cover I Should Have Known Better, and he actually really likes the song. We want to record it pretty soon, so I can show you some spiffy audio and such.

Cool. What's the difference on Eight Days A Week?
At the beginning instead of the famous guitar intro, it's the verse strumming, with them humming a melody that's similiar to what would become the guitar riff. Then in between the song, it stops and it plays a recording of John and George talking about the song. George is roughly strumming what would become the intro and he goes "I'll try to remember it John but if I dont well that's to bad idn't it!" It's pretty cool.
Now onto an other subject!
Has anyone in here heard the band Big Star (http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=413760)
There often compared to the Beatles! Alex Chilton was the Lennon, and Chris Bell was the McCartney. They have great vocal melodies, great melodic guitar, and like the beatles there songs vary. They have Thirteen an acoustic song about teen romance (Tell your dad get off my back, tell him what we said bout "Paint It Black" Rock N' ROll is here to stay).
And also like the beatles they have awesome harmony vocals. They are one of the most influential Alt bands, and possibly the most underrated band of all time, all three of there albums are considered classics. But most people have never heard of them, because ..to make a long story short, there record label was going down, and most times there albums never made it to the stores!
I highly recommend them...from one beatles fan to another haha!
Just saw that you guys were talking about the "Best".
Obviously Paul.
You dont know how much **** i get from ppl for thinking that.
Ironically, your name is George Harrison. =-/

I own all the Yellow SUbmarine action figures. Out of the box, because hoestly, being second run stuff (not originals from 1968) they wouldn't ever get that high in value, and I"ll never sell them, so I might as well keep them and enjoy them.

ladies and gentelman the beatles are the best fockiing group of all time, i mean its just that simple im 22 and at my short life i know this, ive studyed music in high school and now in college and i havent found one other band who is more influential and revolutionary than the beatles, why u all ask its simple, first of all they were the first band to experiment with the guitar and bass playing diffrent notes, the ventures tryd to use the bass as switch to go from verse to chorus, but mccartney who is also the best bass player of all time, was able to understand that u can play notes in a circle of the chord the guitar is playing and thats what essentially he did wich nevermind me saying is the groundwork of how the bass is played today! mccartney proved that the bass can lead a song just as well as a guitar, elvis may have started the rock n roll movement but the beatles refined it and made it better, the beatles were also able to figure out how to play two guitars at the same time in such timely fashion nevermind that the bass is playing diffrent notes than the rythm guitar u got the lead guitar playing diffrent chords than the rythem guitar? wowwww this was unheard of back in those days there was surely no blueprints the beatles could listen too to get these ideas, and this is why i get frustrated when people that realy dont know nothing about music say the beatles werent techincal hey buddy they started techinicality in rock n roll, and lets face it before ringo starr came onto the scene the drums were pretty much the same beat, the same tempo, the same snair snatch, the same hi hat roll, ringo and his un-orthodox style today called ''rim shot'' consisted of him hitting the metal ring on the snair and the center of the snair at the same type to create a diffrent sound, the best example is the help album he using the same snair hes just hitting it diffrently, the beatles had a kick *** manager, oh and one of the most influential producers (george martin) who really didnt know much about rock n roll cause he was involved in opera music and stage music, but he had lots of knowledge of music and how to get the most out of recordings, mixing and sessions, wich also many of his ideas and feats are also groundworks for all studios of today past and present, ladies and gentelman the beatles were the complete package they had it all no other band is more influential i doubt there will ever be another rock n roll band as influential nevermind being more, i think youll all agree! :)

sorry bout my long comment had to get most of my ideas in there kinda wish jacran would come at me with some hard facts to prove me wrong tho i doubt he will since im understudying in music and i pretty much know what im talking about im not saying their the best of all time evryone has diffrent tastes but the beatles are the greatest its just that simple people, get away from the whole beatlemania syndrome and actually study their music, look at the big picture, they are the most influential revolutionary rock n roll media of all time!

The Beatles aren't necessarily my favorite band but I agree, they were the greatest musical act the world has ever seen. Sure you make an arguement for such artists as Miles Davis, Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Elvis...etc but none of them came anywhere near what the Beatles have accomplished. They changed the face of music forever.

He studied music and he spells 'snare' as 'snair'.
I can't get 'With A Little Help From My Friends' out of my head. I just got into The Beatles about a month or two ago, and it's really a great insight into how revolutionary they were, considering the time they were active; nothing else was being done quite like it. That's nothing that hasn't been said before though.
Anyway, has any of The Beatles' members performed each other's songs? eg. Paul does Strawberry Fields, or John does Yesterday. It would probably be totally against who they are as writers and artists, but I'm curious.

When I was watching Paul McCartney Live in Red Square, I was suprised to see him preform "I've got a feeling," a half Paul and half John song. I was wondering what he would do for Johns part, but he just got the rythm guitarist and drummer to sing it together.

Um........no. George Harrison is among the best guitarists of all time, Paul McCartney is definately up there in bass and multi instrumentally talented, John wasn't an amazing guitarist but he was certainly competant (was also multi instrumentally talented), Ringo was a very underated drumer but would definatly be the only Beatle I would think a claim such as yours could be applicable to, and John, Paul and George were all amazing singers.
