Magical Mystery Thread, or a Day in the Thread. Or, more aptly named, The Thread!!!! I also like Happiness is a Warm Thread.
Anyway, back on the lennon solo discussion, I believe med pointed out how he didn't like POB. IMO I don't even care if it was for therapy or not, I think its a killer album that shows more emotion then any other album in existance (after all, the content of these songs really delved into Lennon's inner demons hardcore, not many people do this, or when they do so, they do is metaphorically. Lennon was blunt about his pain "Momma don't go, daddy come home" etc. That part in Mother gives me chills. The weakest songs IMO are Love and My Mummy's Dead.
As for God, I love the lyrics, is that there is a MUCH better version out there then the one on this album. Quite a long time before I bought the CD, I downloaded God and thought that was the song, but its completly different from the album version. The version I downloaded was Acoustic Guitar, drums, and bass, and a lot darker in tone and mood. If that version was on the album then yes that would be easily my favorite song on the album, but not with the included version.

Nice
As tempting as it is, the insertion of "Thread" in a song title is a tiny bit lame, IMO.
I think we should try to come up with something more original. If that is all possible. Perhaps we could start a new trend

Yea there tons of clues in songs. There's a whole book about it. There was a good website about it but I don't remember it. Maybe someone in this thread does though. The Beatle Anthology mentioned it a bunch of times though. At the end of Revolution 9, it says "Turn me on dead man." I think it says "Paul is dead" in Strawberry Fields. There's something in I'm So Tired too. And then there's tons of stuff in Sgt. Pepper's particularly A Day in the Life, which I don't feel like getting into because I'm lazy.

This thread has never been officialized. I think it's actually the largest thread in R&M that isn't linked in the official links thread. If you look at how the Abbey Road cover is set up, it's designed to resemble a funeral procession. The clothes they're wearing give this away. John's the priest or minister, Ringo is the paul bearer, Paul is the corpse (hence no shoes, and different foot forward from others) and George is the Undertaker. Oh, and to that other post, at the end of Strawberry Fields, if you listen closely, it sounds like "I buried Paul." That one's easier to find because it's not backwards or anything.

In the Making of Sgt. Pepper's book by George Martin, he talks about how he walked into the studio and there were a bunch of people just banging on drums and stuff (I think The Beatles and some friends), and then John started yelling "Cranberry sauce". This part can be heard on the end of Strawberry Fields forever after the fade out. The song and the random part weren't in the same time signature, and they wouldn't match up, that's why they did the fade out in between.

Don't worry, Yoko only does her "singing" (read unlistenable wailing) on Lennon's last 2 albums and in live performances. All she does on POB is write the song Do the Oz and on Imagine she cowrites Oh My Love. So yea, she doesn't really have much of a role in either album.

I don't think once we covered Ringo's solo career.
So here's my two discussion points. I think It DOn't Come Easy is a great song, and is probably Ringo's best song of all time, both from a writer's standpoint and as a singer's standpoint. His singing in that is actually quite great. I love his voice anyway, but as for technicality and power this song puts it over the edge.
THe other one is has anybody seen the RIngo All Starrs! I have, in '01. They had Sheila E and Greg Lake, as well as a bunch of people I didn't know. I'd much rather gone to the one in '97 when they had Jack Bruce and Peter Frampton, but I wasn't into music back then which is why I didn't go with my parents.

Paul was the master of pop hooks. There's no doubting that. But in The Beatles, I feel that his competition with John forced him to be more creative and come up with more unique and creative song structures. Once he left the Beatles, he relied on "standard fun pop songs" way too much. That's just my opinion.
For me: George = John > Paul > Ringo

Revolution 9 - Play the "number 9"'s backwards, "Turn me on Deadman"
Strawberry Fields - At the end, either "I buried Paul" or "Cranberry Sauce". Lennon egged on everyone and stood behind both of them in numerous interviews. (meaning he always said it was one or the other)
I'm So Tired - The gibberish at the end, play it backwards "Paul is a dead man, miss him , miss him, miss him"
A Day in the Life - The song is interpreted to be about the day that Paul supposably "died". He "blew his mind out in a car".

In 1969 Russell Gibb, a radio Disc Jockey in Detroit, announced that Paul McCartney was dead. His proof: evidence strewn throughout the Beatles' songs, movies, and album artwork. Newspaper and television reporters picked up the story and the news quickly spread across America.
1969 was when America was informed about it.

Ok, while I'm not entirely sure of the meaning of "I Am The Walrus" in its entirety, we went over a lot of its parts. I guess the song is supposed to be frantic, with a lot of random imagery thrown together, kind of like a nightmare. The noise at the very beginning of the song is supposed to be like a police siren, which helps to establish the paranoid feeling. Lines like "yellow matter custard, dripping from a dead dog's eye" also help to do this.
The phrase "I am the walrus" comes from Lewis Carol's Through The Looking Glass, where Alice reads a story about a walrus who lures oysters out onto the beach and them eats them. I guess the same could be said about capitalism, or something.
Lennon also throws in some stuff about society and how people can be revolting ("Crabalocker fishwife pronographic priestess" is like another way of calling somebody a slut, crablocker = full of crabs), and he talks about this a lot in his later songs also. However, the first line of the song "I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together" shows that Lennon is no better than the rest.
That one was a little tough.

That one was a little tough.
He wrote the line "Here's another clue for you all, the walrus was paul" for people like you that read too much into songs. Why would you even try to find any meaning in I Am The Walrus haha.
JOHN 1968: "We write lyrics, and I write lyrics that you don't realize what they mean till after. Especially some of the better songs or some of the more flowing ones, like 'Walrus.' The whole first verse was written without any knowledge. With 'I Am the Walrus,' I had 'I am he as you are he as we are all together.' I had just these two lines on the typewriter, and then about two weeks later I ran through and wrote another two lines and then, when I saw something, after about four lines, I just knocked the rest of it off. Then I had the whole verse or verse and a half and then sang it. I had this idea of doing a song that was a police siren, but it didn't work in the end (sings like a siren) 'I-am-he-as-you-are-he-as...' You couldn't really sing the police siren."
JOHN 1980: "The first line was written on one acid trip one weekend. The second line was written on the next acid trip the next weekend, and it was filled in after I met Yoko. Part of it was putting down Hare Krishna. All these people were going on about Hare Krishna, Allen Ginsberg in particular. The reference to 'Element'ry penguin' is the elementary, naive attitude of going around chanting, 'Hare Krishna,' or putting all your faith in any one idol. I was writing obscurely, a la Dylan, in those days. It's from 'The Walrus and the Carpenter.' 'Alice in Wonderland.' To me, it was a beautiful poem. It never dawned on me that Lewis Carroll was commenting on the capitalist and social system. I never went into that bit about what he really meant, like people are doing with the Beatles' work. Later, I went back and looked at it and realized that the walrus was the bad guy in the story and the carpenter was the good guy. I thought, Oh, ****, I picked the wrong guy. I should have said, 'I am the carpenter.' But that wouldn't have been the same, would it? (singing) 'I am the carpenter...'"
Im not trying to offend you or anything, but I just dont think a song like "I Am The Walrus" should really be taken seriously. Basically it's a bunch of lines thrown together with a great melody, and great music.

Well im just saying its stupid to try and read into a song like I am the walrus. Why not do it with "Why Dont We Do It In The Road"
"The pounding drums are definetley a reference to how he will pounding his woman on the road, and when he says the line why dont we do it in the read. I believe its a metaphor for lets have rough sex."

Actually, after reading the quotes you posted from John, most of what he said proved me right. I didn't say I knew what the whole song meant, or if it meant anything, I was just talking about what some of the lines meant. I was right about the Walrus part, and while John might not have known it was about capitalism, Carroll sure as hell meant it that way. I was right about the siren too.
As for "Why Don't We Do It In The Road", obviously the lyrics mean nothing. That was another song of Paul's that he used to show off his vocal capabilities.
Yeah seriously people who try and 'interpret' Beatle songs really need to get a life. Why bother?
I just learned about the songs yesterday, and the complexity of John's lyrics are already beginning to interest me. I think it's pretty cool to actually understand the messages he was conveying.

/late.
He wrote the line "Here's another clue for you all, the walrus was paul" for people like you that read too much into songs. Why would you even try to find any meaning in I Am The Walrus haha.
Im not trying to offend you or anything, but I just dont think a song like "I Am The Walrus" should really be taken seriously. Basically it's a bunch of lines thrown together with a great melody, and great music.
From what I heard, John Lennon was looking at Bob Dylan's lyrics and how nonsensical a lot of them seemed, and he was like 'I can write this **** too.' So he did.

My seats were way up high, but they were near the stage, and I had really good binoculars. It was absolutely amazing. Definitely the best concert I've ever been to.

Then, there was a video of Paul McCartney's life.
Then, the actual show...

Some Wings song, I didn't recognize it.
Jet.
An older song, I don't recall the name specifically.
Drive My Car.
Till There Was You.
Like a Wheel.
Some weird instrumental bit that sounded like Foxey Lady
Got to Get You Into my Life
It's a Fine Line (from the new album)
Baby I'm Amazed
The Long and Winding Road
Some early song, I didn't recognize it.
I Will
An acoustic track from the new album
For No One
Fixing a Hole
Another Wings song I didn't recognize
I'll Follow the Sun
Follow Me (I think that's what it's called)
A classical piece by Bach, which inspired...
Blackbird

65 years ago, a legend was born, sparked by music he created the Quarrymen, later the Beatles, a band the wold impact a world in the 60's and later on, for 3 decades the beatles still have a huge following and devoted fans, 25 years ago John Lennon was shot by Mark David Chapman, this impacted the world in such a way that would never be forgotten, Lennon's soul still lives on in the hearts of Peace-Activist's, Beatles followers, and aspiring musicians, he will never be forgotten.I wasnt alive when Beatles were a band, or when John was still alive, but i still feel so miserable about his death.
Happy birthday John Winston Lennon and may you rest in peace

Is "Like A Wheel" not called "Let Me Roll It?" Or is it a different song. "My heart is like a wheel...let me roll it" But anyways yep it's old John's birthday today. Pity he's not here today.
If he was what do you think he'd be doing? I think he would have probably made some great rock, and pop songs. And he probably would have been a big voice in the war protest. And he music may have become a little computerized, I dont no what he would have done with computers.

Yeah, Foxey Lady I was like "woah... what?" And in Hey Jude he did little impersonations of men and women, it was funny. It was also cool when he played the happy birthday song for John. But, I'd imagine the set list is, for the most part, exactly the same from show to show. With production that high, it really all needs to be planned out, I think.

Well, I've missed a lot, but I'm trying to catch up.
First, Happy Birthday to John yesterday!
This weekend, this Beatles cover band called American English came around. They played at a festival, so I went to see them. They were awesome! They played three different sections. First, they wore the black suits and played some early stuff. Next, they changed into the Seargent Pepper suits and "George" even had the MMT awesome psychadelic Fender. Last they changed into Abbey Road outfits and played later stuff. They played 31 songs altogether. To get into the festival was only $10. "John" was amazingly cool. He even sounded like Lennon, I couldn't believe it at first. So, check them out if they come around your area. (They are from Chicago.)
I am a chick and I wear Beatles shirts. Around here, it's a lot less likely that you find a guy that likes the Beatles. Actually, it's hard to find anyone under the age of 50 that is a Beatles fan. :(
Math is cool.

Roxy Music do a great cover of that track, seems to have a bit more punch in it but of course the downside is that it is not really personal and that aspect is lost in cover versions. John's depth and vulnerability is put into that song and the feelings evoked are so strong. I wish John Lennon a late happy birthday

Has anyone heard the news about Yoko Ono "dissing" McCartney at the Q Awards, she said John used to wake up in the middle of the night feeling insecure that everyone was covering Paul's song, and worrying about his own Songwriting and Influence on other singers.
And Yoko would tell him that he was a great songwriter and that he didnt write June-spoon-moon songs like Paul (commenting on how simple Paul's songs were).
I dont see what's so shocking about that. I already knew John was insecure about that, as I read it in the anthology book.
And its true, John's songs were more complex than Paul's. Just look at I Am The Walrus, Across The Universe, compared to Yesterday and Hey Jude. John had more substance in his lyrics, but I dont think it really matters. I dislike when lyrics get to complex, and a strong melody is much more important than intellegent lyrics.
My point is, people are idiots, it's not very shocking because it's true. "Would you care to sit with me, for a cup of english tea, very twee, very me." "Words are flowing out like endless rain into a papercup, they slither wildly as they slip away across the universe"

"Well I been Meat City to see for myself, been Meat City been Meat City, just got to give me some rock 'n roll."
Of those two excerpts, one is poetic. I'll give you a hint: it's not the one that John Lennon wrote.
As for complex songs. Yeah, Imagine, that's really complex. Paul McCartney was far more musically knowledgable, hands down. Only one of the two was able to successfully incorporate classical instrumentation into their songwriting. Hint: it wasn't Lennon.
As for good lyrics, you can look to songs like Golden Slumbers, Yesterday, Blackbird, and Eleanor Rigby.
You can say that McCartney only wrote poppy songs, but that's a real value judgment. I would say that his music is quite powerful, both lyrically and musically. And even if you do argue it's poppy, it's clear that people love the music.
Also, strong melodies. Personally, most of the best melodies were written by Paul. Something, She's Leaving Home, Golden Slumbers, Hey Jude, and more.
Also, John waking up at night and being worried about Paul being more popular? That shows real vanity on his part.
And how are people idiots? I didn't get the point of that.
Yes I've known that for a good 5 years now :thumb:

I think John was the more creative songwriter, and that inspired Paul to be more creative. John and Paul were very competitive and mimicked each other a lot. I think that Paul was inspired to write more creative songs later in the Beatles career because of John. They had an amazing partnership/ competition.
I think that in his solo career, from what I've heard, Paul got away from a lot of creative writing and wrote some simpler, poppy, love songs because he didn't have John to challenge him anymore. There's nothing wrong with simple love songs though, I don't think anybody could write simple love songs as well as Paul could. I think Illmatic said Paul had the best ear for melody a few days ago, and I think that Paul is the more melodic writer, while John is the more creative one.

John has created masterpieces such as Strawberry Fields Forever, A Day in The Life, Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, and Imagine. They show his creativeness and his songs almost put you in a dreamlike trance because they are beautifully written. His unmistakable voice also set the tone for his songs.
Paul, meanwhile, stays to the regular rock standard, creating songs such as Hey Jude, Sgt. Pepper..., Helter Skelter, etc.

He sure is. Cynthia even said John wasnt here type at all. Not that it justify's that. And John wasnt really there for his wife and kid in the beginning anyway due to the beatles popularity. It's not John's fault he fell in love with Yoko. And he still remained friends with Cynthia, and he spent time with Sean.

I was joking. Im one of the few people who like Yoko. I dont believe she had anything to do with The Beatles break up. My opinion is that it was John and Paul's musical differences that broke up the beatles. You can tell by both of their first solo cd's. John's first was a mostly loud rock album, with screaming and emotional songs. And Paul's continued in the fashion of "I Will," "Oh! Darling" and the such.
And I think you may have accidentally gave me positive rep points, cause I seem to have gone up to 47. But that's good for me, since I was clearly joking.
If It would have happened to Yoko, John probably would have become a total mess, and maybe even stopped making music.

Some of Paul's have got some good deep meanings...Hey Jude would be one, and some of his songs are really cool and more complex (Rocky Racoon). Imagine is not a very complex song, but it shows alot more of John's soul than say "Yesterday." Yesterday is a melody based song, he had the melody a long time before he had the words, while Imagine was most likely the other way around.
Yes I agree Paul was a better musician, he was multi-talented. And its proven that John had some troubles with keeping rhythm. Yes Paul could incorporate classical music into his songs, but John had Rock N' Roll come to him more easily. He would sit down and write a rocker, he wouldnt sit down and tell himself he was gonna make a rocker (Helter Skelter). That's what made The Beatles so great they all brought there own talents together to great something that was greater than the parts alone.
And there's not really any argument over whether Paul's songs are poppy. Because alot of them are, and Im not saying that as an insult. I love a good pop song, and Paul delivers those. And Yes I know he's made some rockers, but my point is that what really came natural to him and what he made the most were pop songs. And again that's not an insult.
I would say that his music is quite powerful, both lyrically and musically. And even if you do argue it's poppy, it's clear that people love the music.
That can go for John Lennon as well.
Also, strong melodies. Personally, most of the best melodies were written by Paul. Something, She's Leaving Home, Golden Slumbers, Hey Jude, and more.
Something was written by George Harrison was it not? I know for sure he wrote the words, and im very sure he wrote the music. But it's possible paul wrote the melody. And I think the best part of She's Leaving Home is John's part. Golden Slumbers, and Hey Jude do have great melodies. There's no arguing that.
But you can't say that he wrote most of the strong melodies. Listen to Across The Universe, Hide Your Love Away, Strawberry Fields, and In My Life.
We can both agree that there both great songwriters.
Also, John waking up at night and being worried about Paul being more popular? That shows real vanity on his part.
And how are people idiots? I didn't get the point of that.
I find it hard to believe McCartney was never worried about Lennon being more popular, or loved. They were always in competition with one another.
And Im saying that it's stupid that everyone's like OH MY GOD! SHE TOTALLY INSULTED PAUL MCCARTNEY!! IT'S A SHOCK THAT SOMEONE SAID HE WRITES SIMPLE SONGS!
First off, it wasn't really an insult more than it was a comment. And secondly, critics have been saying it for like 20 years. But I guess there not Yoko. When Yoko says it, it's outrageous!

Yeah, Something is by Harrison. I have no clue why I said it was a McCartney song. I must have been really tired.
I agree almost entirely with what you say, I was just kind of out of it when posting, I suppose. Although I've never heard of a critic saying Paul's songs were "simple" in a negative context.

Haha sorry man.
Abbey Road is the best album, but White Album has the best songs, yet as someone said, lots of filler.

I wish I hadn't downloaded so many Beatle's songs, if I could go back I would have done it the old fashioned way and bought the albums so I could slowly discover the beatles. That's why I've cut myself off from downloading, from now on I will buy the albums to hear songs I havent heard. Like Revolver, I heard every song but two of them :(. It would be much cooler to get the album and be amazed.
Like with Rubber Soul I hadnt heard any of those songs, except maybe in My Life, same goes for Abbey Road. And listening to both of those cd's was a great experience.
I dont even remember how I got into the Beatles. For some reason during the last christmas season I decided to buy The Beatle's 1's cause it was two cd's for 30 dollars. So I got that one and...I dont remember the other one. But after I heard the 1's I was hooked.

The talking in "A Day In The Life" during the orchestra swells is someone in the studio (George Martin I think) counting for the orchestra. This was because when that person counted to 24, the orchestra was supposed to be at the top of their scales, and then it would go into McCartney's part.
As for the talking in "Hey Jude", I'm pretty sure that's Lennon hitting the wrong chord, as you said Walrus.

MMT is one of my three favorite Beatles albums, with Rubber Soul and Abbey Road.
Strawberry Fields Forever and I Am the Walrus are great songs.
Off of Abbey Road, I really like I Want You(She's So Heavy.) I like bluesy rock, and I like Lennon, so obviously I love a combination of the two.

Yeah. my top 3 is definitally Abbey Road, White ALbum, then MMT.
Favorite songs off of Abbey Road? Gee, lemme think here: Come Together, SOmething, Maxwell's Silver Hammer, Oh Darling, Octupus' Garden, I Want You, Here Comes the SUn, Because, You Never Give Me Your Money, Sun King, Mean Mr Mustard, POlythene Pam, She Came in through the Bathroom Window, GOlden Slumbers, Carry that WEight, The End, Her Majesty....
Well, if I had to narrow it down a bit, I'll probably pick Oh Darling, Here Comes the Sun, and Polythene Pam as my favorites...oh, and I want you as well.

I listened to Abbey Road last night and I think it is just a perfect album. I actually tried to find some kind of fault with it and couldn't find a single one. I think my favorite song is Octupus's Garden, it's just such a happy song. Good solo too.
