If anyones interested, here's a video of John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and Mitch Mitchells playing Yer Blues. Pretty damn cool.
http://s31.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3SFMR567ECMBT2XMU5T0B843L0
That was from the Rock N Roll Circus I downloaded it a while back it's really sweet and John's vocals are great.
Some people wear Beatles shirts just to be "Retro Cool" I have noticed. I dont need to wear a Beatles shirt. I dont feel the need to prove that I like The Beatles.
That's stupid when people complain about people wearing band shirts. People dont wear Nike Shirts because they have to prove they like nike. They wear it because they like the shirts. I doubt anyone goes OH MY! A BEATLES SHIRT! THIS WILL PROVE TO THE WORLD I LOVE THE BEATLES! They go hey I like the Beatles, why not have a beatles shirt?
Anyways I got a dark blue one that just has "The Beatles" writing on it, but my girlfriend bought me a Beatles one that has a picture of a ticket with there faces on it it's pretty cool. But she got me a really awesome John Lennon shirt that has him crossing his arms in the "New York" shirt...you know what picture im talking about.

Vermont/ Hudson Valley. I was close enough. I knew it was a liberal arts school though. Speaking of small liberal arts colleges, I'm visiting Weslyan sometime this fall. It's in Middleton, CT. My mom went there, and she wants me to look at it.
It's good to have the alumni connection. Neither of my parents even went to college
Wesleyan looks awsome. I need to start looking at colleges I don't hate and I could actually get into, though. Nice safetys are hard to come by. UVM looks like total crap compared to Bard

That video of Yer Blues is awesome. Pretty good job with the camera too. I was expecting them to zoom in on Lennon's feet or something, like most movies from 30 years ago, but they were good, zooming in on Clapton's fingers during the solo. It was great. I need that DVD.
This is the first post I've made relevent to music in this thread for like a week. The last week we've been talking about school, t-shirts, and colleges.

I've got a sweet Beatles shirt. It's grey, and it says the beatles across the top in white lettering, and it has them all facing the camera in just kind of assorted poses. It looks like it's in their Abbey Road era because John's got that massive beard and long hair.

Yeah. It's a well known fact that John hated jazz with a passion.
I'm well aware that it's a cover - but Lennon did sing 'I dont have anything against doern jazz unless they try to play it too darn fast' on rock and roll music (I think its off beatles for sale)
Wow - that RR circus video really rocked! Clapton is god!

Maybe I'm Amazed is a great song. It sounds a lot like the Beatles. In fact, I think it would have been much better if it was recorded by them. I could see John adding in some nice vocal harmonies, and George improving that guitar solo, it could have been a lot like Let it Be if they recorded it together. Still a great song though.

Hey people, I just saw McCartney in Tampa last night. Just to let you know, Paul fell into the piano pit that was opening up behind him...fell right on his @ss, but got right up and continued like a pro. Then a freak stormed the stage in the the end,...hugged Paul and was tackled by security..what a scary moment if you where alive and conscience in 1980...
Anyhow..a great show, he played "too many people"...rare thing, BTW.

I gotta disagree with you there, I find keith moon is one of the most creative drummers of all time, and has a style that is completely pointless to try and mimic, He's like the Jimi Hendrix of drums.

You know, for every time someone comes into here and says the Beatles are the most overrated band of all time, I'll come into every AC/DC, Slipknot, and Tool thread and tell them how its a bunch of ****ing noise that someone could fart out (actually I like Tool a tad, AC/DC is boring, and Slipknot fits that description perfectally! )
Moon fit the Who much better than with the Beatles. John Paul and George just couldn't match the energy that Townshend and Daltry could deliver (I'll leave out Entwistle on that one ;) ) plus everything great the Who did would be gone, so we're stuck with only one kickass band that might be better, might not be, and my bets are on the might not be as good.
I like Moon more than Ringo, but Ringo is still one of my favorites. And a much better timekeeper.

Keith Moon is more technically talented than Ringo, but I think in many ways Ringo was more creative. And, Keith Moon wouldn't be able to fill in Ringo's spot. His style just doesn't fit.
Moon was miles ahead of Ringo in creativity. Keith stands alone as a drummer and a person in rock history, he's one of the most creative and original drummers ever.
KM couldn't keep time. But Ringo could so well! And he played what was needed and was an an essential member of The Beatles.
Moon couldn't keep time? Just because Ringo's most admirable trait in terms of drumming (being a great time-keeper) does not mean that Keith couldn't keep it. In some ways, Moon is one of the most advanced time-keepers in history because he kept rhythm with a style that no one else has been able to use. He kept the beat, but also did so much more than that.
That said I think both drummers are essential pieces to their respective bands it would not replace one with the other. But lets get our heads on straight here, Moon dominates Ringo.
Woodstock

I agree with Lunch, Moon was an excellent time keeper. He managed to define a style of drumming never heard before in rock songs that could easily have regular rock beats.

I wonder if the Beatles would have been as big if they had decided to keep Pete Best as their drummer. Probably not, I would think. The way they talk about that part in the anthology, it sounds like they wouldn't have even gotten into the studio if they hadn't replaced Best.

George Martin told them to get a new drummer.
Anyways, yeah, like I said earlier, Keith Moon is my favorite drummer, but its not the drummer way to kick other drummers *** in playing. We all play, and thats waht matters.

Moon was miles ahead of Ringo in creativity. Keith stands alone as a drummer and a person in rock history, he's one of the most creative and original drummers ever.
I'm not saying he can't keep time just because Ringo can...but Keith Moon was known to be a poor time keeper. He would speed up a lot of the time. I swear I read that somewhere...

Yeah, if you listen to We're Not Gonna Take it off of Woodstock, they speed up horribly I believe the second time they go through the "Listening to you..." stanza. I thought it was intentional that they speed up through the song, until I heard the studio version.
IMO it does sound better slowly speeding up, but it was just one rapid change and pretty much kept that tempo, maybe going a little faster. Enough to say that it wasn't intentional.

People do make mistakes when they play live, but Ringo probably doesn't know so much about that( :p ). It's hard to fault a guy who plays for 2-3 hours a night for making a mistake when there is little record of Ringo's live playing.

Something that has somewhat confounded me:
People were so anal about taking apart every last bit of obscurely irrelivent innuendo present in Beatles album covers (for example,t he ones that decided that the Abbey Road cover indicated Paul's passing, etc) missed the back cover of McCartney's "Ram".

There are two pictures of beetles involved in some sort of mating activity, which is more obvious innuendo than Paul's lack of footwear on Abbey Road. How come nobody came up with any crazy stories about this?

I find the Sgt. Peppers cover much more creepy than that Abbey Road one (open palm over Paul's head, design resembling a car in flames while a girl watches, Paul only one facing directly forward, Set up to look like a funeral), I'm sure we've all looked this up before though.

I've usually loved every Beatles cd the first time I've heard it. The only one of theirs that I didn't love right away was Revolver. Well I still loved it but I didn't think it was as good as Rubber Soul. I think it would be safe to say that Revolver's grown on me. Now it's one of my favorite cds ever.

A strange song im looking forward to see him play is "I will". The 2nd to last song on TWA disc 1. I have always loved this song. So quiet, so peaceful. And at only 1:46 long, I always find myself putting it on repeat and listening to it 5 or 6 times. I've always liked how Paul decided not to use a bass for the song because it was too loud, and instead used his voice.
As For The white album, I love it. It is by far my favorite Beatles Album. Tons of critics complain about it being 2 albums, therfore being too long. It is my dream in life to find each one of these people and slap them with such a large force that it kills them. The fact that the album is 2 discs adds to its greatness. There is so much information, so much art, that it is impossible to find something that you dont like. I will admit however, there are some songs that i skip over (Wild Honey Pie, Revolution 9) but still, you have to look at the big picture. There are so many classics.
Thats it for me Listen, learn.

I love The White Album, too. I think I know why I do- after their full blown psychadellia of SPLHCB and MMT, they kind of went back to their rock and roll style of music, but at this point they were much more musically comptent. And there was still a tint of experimental studio stuff.

Same, Revovler took some time to adjust to and I still wouldn't call it a great album, but it does have some great songs. The only other album I could think of that I didn't quite enjoy was With the Beatles, their second UK LP.
With all their stuff its usually icky the first listen, its the 2-3rd you really begin to like it. The only exceptions to this were A Hard Day's Night and Sgt. Pepper's.
But damn, I really dig the White Album... I was kinda afraid it would be one of those half-*** pot albums. Great, great, music. And yes, I've heard a lot about Abbey Road so I'm definately looking forward to it in like 2 months.

 That sounds amazing. Could the song between The Long and Winding Road and I Will have been I Saw Her Standing There? That's one of his best early songs. Helter Skelter must have been amazing.
Helter Skelter was just rediculous. I got a sudden urge to get a band together just so I could cover it :p
The song in between was one of the ones they recorded in someones basement, it was sort of like one of those cheap recording things in the mall, except earlier, of course
I know one of the two ongs they recorded was "Thal Will be the Day", and this was the other one. I think it was when they still had Stu
EDIT: My dad said that it was the best show he has ever seen, and he's seen things like Pink Floyd preforming DSOTM and the Who playing Tommy

On Well, Well, Well off the Plastic Ono Band album. Is that John playing the lead guitar at the beginning or Clapton? Cause I thought Clapton was part of that band, but now I've read he only played on Cold Turkey, and played one live show.

Yeah on Plastic Ono Band, if you read the notes on the CD booklet at least, the entire album is pretty much John, Ringo, and Klaus Voorman. Phil Spector played piano on Love I think, and Billy Preston piano on God.
If you want a scaled down, basic, grungy album, this is the best IMO. Beats out anything out of the supposed 'grunge' era, thats for sure.

I didnt think John Lennon was that good (refering to Well, Well, Well) on guitar. That's actually a really great riff. POB: Mother, I Found Out, Working Class Hero, Do the Oz
Imagine: Imagine, How, Gimme Some Truth

POB- Mother, God, Well, Well, Well, Look At Me, Working Class Hero
Imagine- Imagine, Jealous Guy, Gimme Some Truth
I really love every single song on POB though, so it was hard to pick favorites. Imagine is a little weaker than POB, but I still like all of the songs a lot. Mama I Don't Want to be A Soldier can get a little old though.
Edit- Anyone else feel that John Lennon was at the peak of his career when he died? His stuff on his last 2 albums is incredible and about as good as POB/ Imagine stuff. If only they didn't have Yoko's stuff. If he took his songs from each of those cds and made them onto one cd without Yoko's stuff, it would have been an incredible cd.

I absolutely hate Plastic Ono Band as an album. I think it's a pisspoor attempt to finish Lennon's therapy, and while that's understandable, I just don't think it's musically any good. But yeah, I think I'm in a minority there. Imagine's my favourite solo album by him, probably. Anyone who's British might want to get this month's edition of Q music magazine...it's got Lennon on the cover and has quite a bit about the 25th anniversary of his death, as well as a tribute CD to him which I haven't listened to yet. Anyway, it's quite interesting, especially about Double Fantasy, which I didn't really know all that much about before.
25th anniversary of his death won't be until December 8th, their a little early on that. I just checked though, and he was born on October 9, so that may be why they're doing a special on him. I might do a little write-up on Lennon on December 8th because it'll be the 25th anniversary of his death.

I havent heard the entire Imagine album but the songs Ive heard and really like are;
Imagine, How, and Oh My Love.
Now onto another topic! Does anyone else like hearing in live songs or whatever, musicians fooling around and laughing. It really makes me laugh or smile when I hear that, it makes them seem more human, and its also just funny to hear them laughing during there songs. I bring this up beacause on the Let It Be Sessions during the CommonWealth Song John is doing some crazy voice impersonation. And Paul goes "Commonwealth" ...and John comes back "YES?" then Paul half/laughs while he continues the singing. Perhaps John's impersoning an immigrant? Judging by the words of the song.
It starts at about the 1 minute mark.

Magical Mystery Thread, or a Day in the Thread. Or, more aptly named, The Thread!!!! I also like Happiness is a Warm Thread.
Anyway, back on the lennon solo discussion, I believe med pointed out how he didn't like POB. IMO I don't even care if it was for therapy or not, I think its a killer album that shows more emotion then any other album in existance (after all, the content of these songs really delved into Lennon's inner demons hardcore, not many people do this, or when they do so, they do is metaphorically. Lennon was blunt about his pain "Momma don't go, daddy come home" etc. That part in Mother gives me chills. The weakest songs IMO are Love and My Mummy's Dead.
As for God, I love the lyrics, is that there is a MUCH better version out there then the one on this album. Quite a long time before I bought the CD, I downloaded God and thought that was the song, but its completly different from the album version. The version I downloaded was Acoustic Guitar, drums, and bass, and a lot darker in tone and mood. If that version was on the album then yes that would be easily my favorite song on the album, but not with the included version.

Yea there tons of clues in songs. There's a whole book about it. There was a good website about it but I don't remember it. Maybe someone in this thread does though. The Beatle Anthology mentioned it a bunch of times though. At the end of Revolution 9, it says "Turn me on dead man." I think it says "Paul is dead" in Strawberry Fields. There's something in I'm So Tired too. And then there's tons of stuff in Sgt. Pepper's particularly A Day in the Life, which I don't feel like getting into because I'm lazy.

If you look at how the Abbey Road cover is set up, it's designed to resemble a funeral procession. The clothes they're wearing give this away. John's the priest or minister, Ringo is the paul bearer, Paul is the corpse (hence no shoes, and different foot forward from others) and George is the Undertaker. Oh, and to that other post, at the end of Strawberry Fields, if you listen closely, it sounds like "I buried Paul." That one's easier to find because it's not backwards or anything.

In the Making of Sgt. Pepper's book by George Martin, he talks about how he walked into the studio and there were a bunch of people just banging on drums and stuff (I think The Beatles and some friends), and then John started yelling "Cranberry sauce". This part can be heard on the end of Strawberry Fields forever after the fade out. The song and the random part weren't in the same time signature, and they wouldn't match up, that's why they did the fade out in between.

Don't worry, Yoko only does her "singing" (read unlistenable wailing) on Lennon's last 2 albums and in live performances. All she does on POB is write the song Do the Oz and on Imagine she cowrites Oh My Love. So yea, she doesn't really have much of a role in either album.

I don't think once we covered Ringo's solo career.
So here's my two discussion points. I think It DOn't Come Easy is a great song, and is probably Ringo's best song of all time, both from a writer's standpoint and as a singer's standpoint. His singing in that is actually quite great. I love his voice anyway, but as for technicality and power this song puts it over the edge.
THe other one is has anybody seen the RIngo All Starrs! I have, in '01. They had Sheila E and Greg Lake, as well as a bunch of people I didn't know. I'd much rather gone to the one in '97 when they had Jack Bruce and Peter Frampton, but I wasn't into music back then which is why I didn't go with my parents.

But didn't he do It Don't Come Easy with John?

That's basically how I see their songs in the Beatles too. I found John and George's songs to be interesting but Paul seemed to write a lot of bland love songs.
I love Paul's work with the Beatles...out of all the Beatles, he had the best ear for a hook.

Paul was the master of pop hooks. There's no doubting that. But in The Beatles, I feel that his competition with John forced him to be more creative and come up with more unique and creative song structures. Once he left the Beatles, he relied on "standard fun pop songs" way too much. That's just my opinion.
For me: George = John > Paul > Ringo

I suppose...I still find it more listenable than Lennon's solo material, though.

Lennon's solo material probably isn't that easy for some people to listen to. I've always loved it, but most people here who have heard it either love it or hate it. I listened to Lennon's Acoustic album today in school. What a great album. Lennon is good on acoustic.
