I listened to it for the first time last summer. When I heard the Sun King for the first time I heard the crickets in the background and turned off my CD player to see if the were real or not, and the crickets in the beach grass just kept on chirping. It took me a while to realize they were recorded

I'm pretty sure I voted for you, sorry if I didn't.
Sun King is a great song. I love the guitar intro, and the echoey effect it has throughout the song. Plus phaser. It's very awesome.
Can somebody list which instrument each Beatle plays? I know Paul=bass, John and George=Guitar, Ringo=drums, and they all sing, but I'm not sure who does the piano and keyboards, or any other instruments they might use.

John - Guitar, keyboards
Ringo - Drums, Percussion
George - Guitar

On the "Back in the Us" DvD he plays guitar on a bunch of songs. The best by far is when he plays "Sgt. Pete Best wasn't a 'team' player. There are quite a few different reasons that have been stated over the years in different interviews and books. Which to really believe is up for grabs. Some reports state that John and Paul were jealous that the birds (chicks, girls) flocked to Pete and they didn't like the competition. Other reports state that Best was a loner in the sense that he didn't mix well with John and Paul in the camaraderie department. Still other reports site the new manager, Brian Epstein as not liking him, that he didn't fit the new image Epstein was molding for the group, and he was responsible for Best's ouster. ( Before Epstein, the Beatles were more Teddy Boy in look. Teddy boy was a British slang term for what we in the States referred to as 'Greasers' during the late 50's and early 60's. Picture leather jackets and slicked back hair styled in 'Ducktails' and you'll get an image of what they looked like on stage during the early days in the Cavern before their trip to Germany in 61. Their look was inspired by Marlon Brando in the movie 'The Wild Ones.' Epstein 'cleaned' them up, insisting on the matching attire and hair styles that made them famous. )
John and Paul had known Ringo when he was playing with 'Rory and the Hurricanes.' When they played the clubs and Rory was on the bill with them, Ringo would often sit in -- as Pete Best often could not be found for the gig at the last minute.
Whatever the reason for the replacement, Ringo did fit well, with his easy-going attitude, as well as his humor, matched with that of the band's humor of 'hey, we're not all that serious' that was prevalent in the early days. The Beatles constant statements about being dumbfounded and unbelieving of the magnitude of their early success, served ironically only to endear them to their fans even more so.

I'm reading the Anthology at the moment, up to page 64 so I am not all that far through it. It is really interesting and a great read, all the chaos of Hamburg and the Kaiserkeller club where they played and about Rory Storm and the Hurricanes in which Ringo was in and how the Beatles improved immensly from playing night and day in Hamburg that when they got back to Liverpool they were a lot better than any of the bands there, Ringo noticed that they had really gelled as an outfit since he first met them and drew the conclusion that they were better than Rory Storm and the Hurricanes.

Canadian Guy; old age has it's advantages.... I grew up while they were still a group. I was 12 in 1969.
Stu Sutcliffe was friend of John's from Art school. No, he couldn't play, but friendship was thick and he had the money to buy guitars from the sale of his artwork. He did meet a girl in Germany. I can't remember her name offhand, but she was a model and did the haircut on Sutcliffe first that would become the Beatle style for the rest of the band. He stayed behind in Germany to be with her when the others returned to England. Sadly, six or so months later, he died from a brain aneurism.

PS. Don't be scared of me age.... It ain't all that old when you think about it. I make my living as a newspaper photographer and comic book illustrator, which keeps me busy and young. I play a mean bass, can strum a nasty six-string and still have a bit of speed left behind a drum kit. I have two boys (one entering his teens) who are very much into music. I'm doing my best to pass what I know about guitar playing and music to them. Plus I'm learning a lot about the new bands from my oldest. Music is something that no-one can ever take away from you.
By the way, Styx, is making a come-back and releasing a new album of cover songs. They were a band from the seventies through eighties. They do a cover of 'I Am the Walrus.' I've heard it. Yeah Get Back has a great riff to it. It also leaves open a lot of room for improve, like most Beatles songs. That makes them really fun to play

Yes to the above.
Also, I agree, all of The Beatles' songs could probably be improved upon by covering. The sad thing is, they had the best vocals....so take their vocals and throw in your own instrumentation and you'd kick ***!

( Some radio buddies let me hear the advance disc) It's not bad. Check it out when it's released which should be any day now. :)
I heard that cover around 3 months ago, so its not that new, its a ok cover, but doesn't compare to Lennon's vocals. I'm not one for covers unless it sounds better than the original.

I think its really gay and rediculous. There is this big group of kids (like 8 kids) and they are all classic rock posers (You know what i mean "Ya! d00d i t0ta11lly l0ve Led Zeppelin" My Fav song d00d has to be that one song....oh yeah what is it..oh yeah! B1ack dog d00d. Awwwesome man!)
Anyways................They all are big believers that Paul McCartney is dead. And once they figured out that i am a hardcore McCartney fan (REALLY hardcore i might add.) they felt the need to try and convince me that he is dead.
Well I went on some websites to see this "Extremly Convincing Evidence". and i have to say its complete and utter Bull$hit. Every little "Fact" they give is so ridiculous, its almost laughable.
Like the fact that on "Rubber Soul" you can prove pual is dead by noticing on the cover they all seem to be looking at pauls grave.
Um.....how about, no. Its a cover of a god **** album, theyre not looking at a grave.
Well, i could sit here at my desk and Bitch some more about how Paul isnt dead, and dispove every "Fact" that people have put out there, but that would take me hours to write. So i guess ill stop here.

Actually, Paul and the rest of The Beatles claim to have first been aware of the death hints in 1969, after Abbey Road was released. So that makes about any clues before 1969 basically added fluff.

Wow, you don't believe me?
Okay, I took this banner from http://www.aboutthebeatles.com
I cropped each of the Beatle's faces and made them into four seperate JPEG files.
Dig me so far?
Then, I cropped out an even portion like 100X100 pxls and put them over the faces, so some of the face would show and some wouldn't.
I sent them to myself via email and downloaded them on my computer at school where I used the program Macromedia Fireworks to export them into smaller files, because this next step takes a lot of file sizes.
When I was done, I sent them back, resized and optimized and ready to roll. I then used Microsoft's Picture It!'s flipbook feature to make them into the moving picture, saved it, and uploaded it onto MX. Bada-bing, bada-boom, avatar'd.

I <3 both sides of Revolver (pre and post), what was really awesome was seeing the beatles play some of their pre revolver tracks in Let it Be.
Lately i have been listening to Revolver heaps I really really wanna do some covers of it eg. "Tommorow Never Knows" (write guitar fills that immitate the sound loops and backwards guitars) "I want to tell you" (turn the piano part into a rythem guitar part) "I'm only Sleeping" and "She Said, She Said".

True, Rubber Soul through Sgt. Pepper was a big step for the band to take, and definitely the right step, but there's something about those early recordings. Just pure, perfect pop songs.

Interesting. I've never heard such positive sentiments for the earlier stuff. Everyone loves it, but the only thing really talked about it is the later stuff. It is great music, though. I agree.

05-15-2005, 12:20 PM
The reason is fairly logical. The early stuff was fairly simple in structure. As each album progressed, they built on the musical knowledge and experience they gained. Most consider Revolver to be the turning point from Pop band to serious musicians, as 'Tomorrow Never Knows' seems such a departure of their familiar song structure, that it sort of signals a precursor of things to come. It was really more of a gradual change as Rubber Soul showed deviation from the 'Beatle' formula as well.
Their early music was basically verse, chorus, middle eight, chorus and verse. As they learned and explored, the structure expanded. If you study each album up to Sgt. Pepper, you will see that progression of experimentation building with each new release. Post Sgt. Pepper songs were layered and included varying styles and influences.
So naturally there is more discussion on the later work as that is where the most divergence of style is.
Had they not been musical chameleons, they may have faded away after a few years and become simply the band that led the British invasion and nothing more. And we probably would not be discussing their music with the fervor that we still do today.

Like most, I like their later stuff better, but some of the early stuff is good. I have With The Beatles, which is okay, but I don't love. And then I have Help, which I really enjoy a lot. I think it's great, very short, but very enjoyable. I also enjoy 1, which has some of the better pop.

The early days are too suger-coated for my like. They are catchy tunes, but nothing to keep me interested for too long. Maybe once in a while I get a craving for All My Loving or Please, Please Me, but after that I go straight back to their later days. Specially because of Harrison's compositions.
Harrison was really getting a lot better at writting lyrics, and because of his love for Eastern music, his style evolved a lot too. I still think is sad that Lennon and McCartney overshadowed him.

Yes, and here's why:
You can't play the wrong key, because the harmonica is all of the notes in one key. the best starter one is in Key of C, with no sharps or flats. Once you get that, all you need to do is learn how to play one note at a time, and then just mess around with it until you know where the notes are. You can do this by looking up tabs (www.harmonicacountry.com has a slew of Beatles and other CR ones), and after a while you can think of a song like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and just play it by ear.
Compared to most other instuments, its really easy to learn, but not so easy that you can pick it up and in a few seconds have it down as well as whistleing
I say go for it, it won't cost you more than 10$ to try, anyway

The first album content was under record company control. Beginning or unknown bands were required to include covers of already familiar songs because it was thought that people would buy records from new bands if it included songs they already knew. Once the Beatles hit superstardom, that requirement was lifted. People wanted to hear the Beatles do Beatles, not Chuck Berry. Just like when 'Hey Jude' broke the three minute only song length rule for radio airplay, the 'must include a cover rule' was another corporate taboo broken that we can thank the Beatles for.

Yeah it had been a while since I had listend to it, about two or three months. I had lost the cd so all I had was two or three tracks of it on a greatest hits. I actually had only listened to the cd in full only one or two times in full before I lost it. I had forgotten how great the instrumentals are. The solo's and fills really suprised me. Ulysses

I completely agree with that. Especially on Abbey Road, the music interacts and corresponds with the lyrical content and emotional feeling is created, its exceptional song writing in that regard. The tracks on Abbey Road each have a different tone which is expressed and in turn makes the listener feel it. Something, I Want You (She's So Heavy)..etc, they all work together and contrast magnificently.

Does anyone know who organized the strings on Eleanor Rigby? Was it George Martin?
bcf717
05-22-2005, 03:33 PM
Both John Lennon and Paul McCartney learned piano through their interaction with other musicians during their years in the studio. Lennon already played the mouth organ, and progressed to hammering out basic accent chords on a small keyboard during cover songs like 'Rock and Roll Music' and songs like that. During the Shea Stadium concert footage, John can be seen one-handing on the organ and finishing up with an elbow slide across the keys.
George Martin scored all the orchestral music in their songs including 'Elenor Rigby' until Phil Spector took over when Apple records was established. Martin was very savvy in producing, as he never over-orchestrated and allowed the Beatles' musicianship to be the focal point. Martin is credited with suggesting many of the different instruments used to make many Beatle songs unique in sound for the time. His suggestions of using bongos, french horns and even harpsichord made those songs memorable, but he always allowed the Beatles to be themselves with them.
Spector on the other hand, was criticized for being too heavy handed in production. Sometimes, after recording was wrapped up, he would go back and add orchestration and effects to his own tastes. Such is the case with 'Let it Be.' Spector went back in after the album was finished and added all the orchestration. It was essentially 'un-authorized', but being the Beatles had officially broken up, they didn't fight the changes. Now we finally have the release of 'Let it Be Naked', which is the 'de-Spector-ized' version that the Beatles had originally envisioned for their last album.

Kickflip_Burrito
05-22-2005, 05:54 PM
Let It Be is the original album, which was the last album released by The Beatles. It's got Phil Spector's production on, meaning that the famous "wall of sound" is on there, with over the top strings, and it sounds overly produced. Let It Be...Naked was produced a couple of years ago, has Spector's production toned down/removed, so it sounds more like what The Beatles, specifically McCartney, originally had in mind. It also features changes in tracklisting, such as what order the songs are in, and what songs are even on the album.
I see, thanks for clearing that up with me :thumb:
