Somthing I always wondered is well by the time the White Album came around all the members of the Beatles were just doing their own thing for the most part. I wonder if they stayed together their latter cds would just sound like their solo careers.

Well, I saw the poll about the "best beatles album," and it got me thinking. We have all these threads about all sorts of great bands, but there's no thread just for talking about The Beatles. So, I decided to make one. Talk about The Beatles, their solo careers, anything to do with The Beatles in here. As a starter question, what are peoples preferences: Let it Be or Let it Be Naked? I personally prefer Naked, I think its more polished, and I think The Beatles were more of a studio band then live band.

I don't dig the Beatles.

Abbey Road is yet again my favourite Beatles album, it just has this balance and beauty that for me is unmatched. I Want You (She's So Heavy) is such as great track for just listening to repeatedly and like Walrus said zoning out - dreaming and thinking. Come Together, Something, Because, Golden Slumbers and The End are also amazing tracks for different reasons and each seem to have their own personality which release an array of emotions and thought patterns. Truly magnificent record.

I noticed the original post by DuesExMachia that started this thread off. They stated they think of the Beatles as more of a studio band rather than a live band.

No offense but I have to differ. The Beatles were the definition of a live band. The Beatles honed their craft performing in clubs before they became successful. Up until 65 all record recordings were 'live' in the sense that all musicians had to playing at the same time while recording in the studio. The technology back then was such that extra tracks were a luxury. Pretty much when you hear final recording of say, 'Please, Please Me' or 'Honey Don't' on their early records, you are hearing all four performing at the same time in the studio. The only additional tracks layered on might be a little extra piano or harmonica, or a steady cowbell or tambourine from Ringo. Essentially all the guitars, drums, lead and harmonies were performed together for the master track. That's why on some CD compilations you'll find history on the recording, and it'll read something like 'this is was the fifth take.' Maybe in the studio they played and sang it eight times, and the fifth take was the one that they liked best. -- (Also for their first couple albums, EMI wasn't yet sold on them as a viable best seller. They got their first album only by George Martin of EMI standing up to the brass on behalf of this 'unknown band' that was thought to sound too much like the Everly Brothers. Studio time was money, as it still is today, and EMI wasn't allowing an overuse of time for extra tracks to go into the albums. The Beatles' expertise from being a live club band all those years payed off in being able to perform quickly and efficiently in the studio. The ability to 'nail it' in one or two tracks made the company happy and more willing to give studio time as their careers moved along. After they achieved superstar status, studio time was no longer an issue. Still, for the most part, they played music with all band members involved for over half their career together.)

By 66 they were experimenting with more and more multiple tracks as the studio technology grew to allow more special effects, loops and etc. But the tech had not evolved enough for the studio FX to be done properly in live conditions. This, as well as the fact that the Beatles were disenchanted with the rigors of performing live, caused them to stop touring by 1966. They hated that no-one including themselves could hear them over the fan's screaming. At the end, by 66, their singing and playing was noticeably off-key and out of sync as they just went through the motions on stage as they were convinced that no-one heard them anyway. Remember, back then a 100 watt amplifier was state of the art. Even a hook up of as many as possible, and with the PA patch ins of the venue as well, couldn't compete with the noise of a packed Shea Stadium. By 1969, they had left the psychicdelic and come back full circle to live performable songs. The rooftop concert for 'Let it Be' left no question that the band was still as tight as ever in live performance.

Walrus -- I'm always amazed by what they did with the studio tech of the day. Phasing and other effects we take for granted weren't around then. Lennon is credited with naming Phasing. It was accomplished by playing two tapes of the same track of music at the same time to get the effect. It had to be perfectly synchronized to work and exact control was especially time consuming in the studio. A long way from simply pushing a button on an amp like we do today.
Their multi track music stands out to most people 'discovering' them now, which leads to a studio band perception.
But even in concert -- imagine only a hundred or so watts to play with at a gig. No wonder they couldn't hear themselves. That's why I think of them as a primary live band. I don't think a lot of bands today could play together like they did without really hearing what they were playing.

I wear the round glasses fitted prescription for driving. Got them at least twenty years ago at an optician's here in the states. Recently I got new prescriptions. Could not find the rounds anywhere, so my wife talked me into a pair that were kind of oval-ish. Just not me...I ended up going back with my worn out rounds, had the doc clean 'em up and order the new lenses to go in them. It's a pisser when people say, 'What are those? Harry Potter glasses?' But I know better.

Keep checking... that style's got to come back sooner or later in eyewear....

Well, I'm gonna piss youse all off, 'cause I'm gonna brag. I caught one his first solo tours in Philly at the now-defunct Veterans Stadium back in 76 when I was in college. ( College was cool back then as a lot of up-and-commers played universities. Our college hosted Billy Joel on campus before he really made it big.) In 1992 I photographed his show back in Philly from on stage ( I work as a newspaper photographer). This ticked my wife off so much I ended up getting tickets for her and me at Madison Square during the same tour. His last tour, we caught at the Meadowlands in North Jersey. When it was announced that Atlantic City would be included in the tour, I bought three tickets -- for me, my wife and son, who was ten at the time. I ended up photographing that show as well, but after shooting and sending the pictures, I was able to store my gear in the convention center press office and use my ticket to join my family for the rest of the show. OK, I will accept the hate mail, now. :)

Unfortuently I'll be one of the ones bitching.

You know it may just be me, but when I first started posting in the Beatles thread there was a lot of good Beatles conversation going on so here's my attempt the bring that back for a while:

Since the Beatles songs have so many different meanings to everybody what you do is you post a song then the people in the thread write their interpitation of the song and at the bottom of the post give another Beatles song for sombody else to interpit (yeah I'm making it pretty obvouis I can't spell with this post). Hopefully this will bring back some of the good conversations that used to be in here.

Oh yeah: interpret Fool on the Hill :)

(sorry if this was a bad idea, just hoping to start up some conversation)

Across the Universe is about sombody who finds himself though song writting, though in fustration with the world wishs to fly among the stars away from it all.

Yeah a lot of their songs that speak to me were written like that, like A Day In The Life whitch was written from things that were just in the paper one day, but it says much more to me.

Here is what I Am The Walrus means to me:

I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together:
The humen race is one entity and we are all connected to each other in some way like through a soul (a philophy I belive in)

See how they run like pigs from a gun, see how they fly
This to me means somthing based off the sarcastic comment "yeah when pigs fly" because while some pigs conform to this rule, others fly

Sitting on a cornflake waiting for the van to come, corporation tee shirt, stuipd bloody tuesday, man youve been a naughty boy you let your face grow long
Is about sombody who conforms to impress his friends (they come in the van) but is upset about how he destroyed himself

Mister city policeman sitting pretty little policeman in a row, see how they fly like lucy in the sky, see how they run
Policemen enforcing conformity

Expert texpert joking smokers don't you think the joker laughs at you
Self destruction through drugs (I do them, and I know the Beatles did them, but they can lead to self destruction)

See how they smile like pigs in a sty, see how they snied
Is about how we just let ourselves be slaves to the rules.

Thats about it for now. A lot of that is personal interpitation, and I'm sure not as intended by the band.

The Beatles didn't really have much meaning to their songs, or aleast they won't say they did, their meanings to most of their songs were right in front of you, but if they didn't make sense people would look deeper into it and find things that weren't meant to be their, ie Charles Manson.

:thumb: I think I will too.

My school's choir is going to sing three Beatles songs and I think a song by Styx for their next concert. I think they are singing Here, There, and Everywhere, P.S. I Love You, and I can't remember the other one. It might be And I Love Her or Till There Was You. I was kind of hoping they would do Happiness Is A Warm Gun. I think that would be a cool one for a choir to do.

First ever high school talent show tomorrow! I hope my friends that are singing can make it through our song without crying. :( (The talent show will raise money for the family of a boy in my class who was killed in a car accident in February.) Our song is the last act, and we made a slideshow to go along with it.

I really don't think thats true, yes its true for a lot of what I interprited in I am the Walrus, and many other Beatles lines/songs. There are songs with second means to them the band intended I have a hard time beliving that things like Strawberry Feilds or amusment park rides are just sensless ramblings. I belive though Lennon wrote some songs like I am the Walrus with out it having a meaning to him, but wrote it in a way that other people would be alble to identify with it, and make it there own interpiration rather then just finding out his.

Well the point for people like me is that it makes a problem easier if I know sombody else has lived it. And the world as a whole is a lot more easy to understand to me when you can compare it to a metaphore, or when everything rhymes.

With song lyrics, whats important is what you get out of it, everyone will get something different out of it, i personally try not to find the songs meaning, i just read the lyrics off the net or what ever and look at its structure to help my own songwritting,
Otherwise i just tend to sing the lyrics without thinking about them at all.
Some songs have a bigger effect on me then others, for instence A Day in the Life, the lyrics mean NOTHING to me what so ever, but the song feels powerfull and gives me the illusion that the lyrics do actually mean something.
I am the Walrus also means nothing to me, but i get heaps out of it and can listen to it over and over and over again on repeat for hours.

I think your missing the point I'm trying to make. Yes I know a lot of those songs were about things like news paper articles, nursery rhymes, or salvation armys, but I think Lennon wrote the song in a way that could be loosely interpreted. I think he did that because he didn't want to always preach a message to his fans like he does in songs like Revolution I think he wanted his fans to come up with their own thing. I think he wanted to get the creative part of their mind working.

Hey WALRUS -- I went to Glassboro State in New Jersey during the 70's. It's now Rowan University as 10 or so years ago a guy named Rowan made an endowment of several million dollars to the school, so they changed the name of the school. Guess I'm a diploma orphan now. Hear if he would've thrown in a couple thousand more they would have changed the name of the whole town from Glassboro to Rowan. Yuk, Yuk... me bitter? Not really.

But yeah, we had Billy Joel appear running around on stage in a grey suit wearing sneakers right after the Turnstiles album release. After his next album, The Stranger, he got too big to be playing the campus circuit.

FYI -- My wife bought tickets for the McCartney show coming to Philly in September. Guess I'll be attending again, though no-one's twisting my arm if you know what I mean. ---- Hope I'm not assigned to photograph him for the newspaper that night... I don't have the same equipment storage privileges as I do in Atlantic City. That would suck.

And finally, I think asking for personal interpretations of lyrics is a fine idea in this thread. But write what it means to you personally. Reams have been written on the meanings, double meanings, triple meanings, etc, etc. Enough critics and doctoral thesis intellectual sleuths have already written books and books trying to get into Lennon's head. Tell why that particular song sings to you. Sure, Lennon took snippets from news, classical literature, and of course the new-found drug culture and mixed them together in various forms. He was a punster and loved to play with words. But he had a knack of finding the right combinations that touched everyone differently. Coupled with his bandmates, the music had a rare way of speaking to individuals individually. And that, of course, is why we are still sitting here today typing away, debating and discussing points and opinions, about a band that was at their height close to 40 years ago.

Quite remarkable when you think about it.

Yes,... these posts are more like it. Kudos to all! :)

This morning before work, I pulled out Revolver, plugged in my Hofner, and monkeyed around the frets. 'Tomorrow Never Knows' always stands out for me. The simplicity --- all it is, is a C chord in structure, bass is C only with the octave C as the accent --- coupled with the intricate dissonant backwards and forwards effects and surreal detached vocal, is a masterpiece. Always blows my mind that someone's mind could conceive such a impressionistic composition.

To be honest, I think the Beatles are actually become ing UNDERrated. Not by our parents generation, but ours. I really like the lyrical aspect of Sgt. Peppers and the language used. The psychedelic, trippy feeling of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, the beautifully constructed music and lyrics to She's Leaving Home and the subject matter and the way it is expressed through language in A Day in the Life. Also Across The Universe off Let It Be is one of my favourite Beatles tracks lyrically speaking.

The thing about Oh Darling! is that paul sung it only once a day, and if he screwed it up (in the recording studio) - he'd try again the next day. he wanted that raw sound.

That explains the excellent vocals and smooth dynamics. It really adds something extra to the track, with less intense and worked vocals a lot of the Beatles music in particular their later material wouldn't satisfy emotionally but his voice gives songs such as Oh Darling! a great edge.

Someone mentioned the 'bigger than Jesus' controversy. During an interview, Lennon was talking about how mind boggling the Beatles success was. How the fans hung on every word they said, every action they did. The copying of the clothes they wore and how the fashion would change every time they changed their socks. The gist of Lennon's quote was that in 'eyes' of these type of fans, they were bigger than Jesus. It was cynical Lennon humor lamenting that in these modern times, kids were looking up to them more than Jesus.

The press took the quote out of context centering solely on the 'we're bigger than Jesus', and and not printing the whole discussion. If the whole story had been reported properly, it may have clearer that Lennon still couldn't believe the fanaticism the band commanded and that fanaticism was beginning to boarder on being obscene. I read the whole interview years ago and my conclusion was that Lennon, in his own tongue-in-cheek way, was telling certain over the top fans that perhaps they should get a life.

This sort of thing still goes on today. How many times have you guys read in a newspaper or saw a tv report where somebody important got fired or triggered a protest because they used the wrong word or phrase during a speech. Most times the phrase just came out wrong, and you know they really didn't mean exactly that, but people can be so touchy and unforgiving.....

Yes WALRUS, I do own a Hofner. It's a model 500/1, or the violin bass as it's commonly known. It was built in 1967 and I bought it in 1971 to take to college. (Can't remember if I payed $100 for the bass and $150 for the stack amp or visa-versa...)

I was a drummer for a band in high school. We basically learned music by listening to Beatles records as well as the great rock and roll classics that influenced the Beatles....like Little Richard, Carl Perkins etc, etc. Arriving at college I quickly found that, A; drum kits don't fit too well in the dorm, and B; drums don't have volume controls. So I switched to the bass.

I've played a few other bass models but always drift back to the Hofner. I find it quick and versatile... and gives a good boom with proper amplification. I play standard 6 string rhythm as well. I have a nice Ibanez thick body hollow arch to which I added a Bigsby. It gives a good acoustic blend and has the sound and look of a Gretsch, if you can picture it.
I also have a Rickenbacker 320 from 1988. The 320 has the same specs as the 325, the model that Lennon used. It's short scale with a thinner body like the 1963 version that was given to Lennon in Miami. The 320's were made during the 80's using same spec as the discontinued 325's. Rickenbacker recently re-issued the 325's (starting price was over two grand) but I'm happy with what I got. That's my 'hammering' guitar. :)

It was Sun King, then all of a sudden Paul sang "She came in through the bathroom window." THe things about Abbey Road that stands out the most is the drums. Yes, I am a drummer, but Ringo has the best sounding drums of all time on this album. Sweet stuff.

Her Majesty really makes abbey road for me, If it wasnt for her majesty the listening to the albumn would make me feel incredibaly sad, the first time i heard it, after hearing "the End" i went, ****... that was there last song and i felt sad, but then Her Majesty came on and i just thought "what a way to go out". and then felt happy
