In my history class we were talking about a European arms treaty, and my teacher started the lecture with "20 years ago today, Gorbachev taught the band to play". Nobody got the reference but me :D

Hey does anyone know who plays the guitar solo in Taxman I have always it was Paul and that's what it has said in some other things I've seen but I was reading a book that about all their recording sessions and they usually say when the lineup of who plays what changed but they didn't say anything. But I also saw on this thing from a site that says George played the Lead guitar but Paul played the Guitar solo and bass.
Im not sure, but i think what you got there is right.

Hey Walrus... I care about 'Rain.' -- John is quoted as saying he was drunk )I'm sure translates to high) at home in the evening and trying to listen to the day's sessions on tape. Using the old reel to reels he accidentally put the tape on backwards and loved what he heard. That was the birth of their psychedelic sound.

No, I haven't yet. Definitely will though. Speaking of Ringo, I remember earlier in this thread a lot of discussion on individual talent and musicianship of the four, with Ringo regarded as having the least.
I don't consider that the case. Bands with longevity enjoy that status as a result of all members being distinctive yet blending properly with their 'mates to get the band's unique distinctive sound. Would the Beatles have made their mark with interchangeable drummers? I doubt it.
John was the consummate lyricist. Always on the cutting edge, once the Beatles were world established, his leadership took the band to their next level, -- from pop phenomenon to spokes-band for social change. Solo, his lyrics were the essence of his music.
Paul was the melody machine. His use of the bass as an essential element of the song (play a Beatle song without Paul's bass lines and it's not a Beatles song anymore), defined what we think of as the 'Mersey Beat.' Often during his solo career, he is dismissed as be being too poppy and sugary. Love him or hate him, the man can almost write music on demand and his catalogue is unbelievably immense. And face it, popish or not, chances are you'll be humming it for the rest of the day as you can't get it out of your head.
George as the soloist define the band's sound. Never rushed a solo. When John would solo, you could sometimes hear a bit of a rush on it, never with George. George's leads became the yardstick for how we judge leads since.
Ringo, steady and versatile WAS the 'Mersey Beat.' True, he wasn't a vocalist and only stuck to percussion, but his use of that percussion added more to the uniqueness of the 'Beatle sound' than a lot give credit for. Even early on, he would use cymbal, cowbell, wood block or tambourine to create the texture of the song. Later songs like 'Come Together' are not the same without his 'texturing.'
I've seen Ringo with his All Star Band live several times, and when he's at the mic, it does become somewhat of a 'Beatles cover.' Once he sits behind the skins, no matter which All Star bandmate's song is being played, there is a difference that is definitely Ringo.
Picture if Keith Moon was the Beatles' drummer. Or Charlie Watts drumming for the Kinks. Ringo working for the Stones..... Musically it just doesn't work. Bands that make to the top and stay there do so because they are fortunate enough to find the right mix of musicians. Beatles, Stones, the Who, etc, all own their 'sound' to the luck of finding the right personalities who work complimentary to each other. There 'sounds' are often imitated, but never mastered by other bands. Ringo was no exception.

All right! This is fun again! Of course I was speaking in context of the course of musical history as we know it. Maybe in some comic book parallel dimension Jagger hooked up with Lennon instead of Pauly and music history took on a whole different direction. The Beatles as we know them would be a stretch to imagine Mick screamin' out 'I Am The Walrus.' Don't get me wrong -- I think it would be great to hear Mick tackle the Walrus. That'd be one 'ell of a cover, I'm sure. Also I ain't diss'n ol' Charlie. I think he's great.

Ringo and his All Star Band albums and show are kind of like the 'best of' from past music's top acts. He grabs musicians and mixes and matches them as he travels with the show from city to city. Heavy on nostalgia, that's the way he wants it, and he doesn't pretend to be anything else but good old lovable Ringo playing with other greats on stage. In the past he's played with Todd Rundgren, Gary Booker, Jack Bruce, Simon Kirke, Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Dave Edmunds, Nils Lofgren, Joe Walsh, Burton Cummings (Guess Who) and quite a few more. His shows are always like, 'wow, it's Ringo! -- and look who he's got with him.' Great fun.
Also which new album are you talking about? Except for anthologies, the last one I heard was the from the 2003 tour.

I did, I love it. It was constructed from demos and early recordings by his son and Jeff Lynne(I think.) They did a phenomenal job, it's a really good album. "Marwi Bluesa"(If I can remember it right) is a great track, the guitar solo. Any Road, Pisces Fish and the title track are all wonderful tracks too.

The great thing about Ringo is that he is so steady and never messes. He certainly can't do what someone like Keith Moon does but he is a very good drummer who works very well with the beatles. I heard them doing a really fast early version of Get Back where John is singing lead. John doesn't know it that well so at one point he comes in too early and Ringo being the drummer that he is covers John up with this great fill. That's when I realized he was great. ;)

Did anyone buy George Harrison's "Brainwashed" album (the last one he did before he died)? That's a great album.
I did! an amazing album under the circumstances: he likely knew he was dying and yet embarked on the album and included his son, Dhani. What I find most intriguing is that despite his progressive battle with cancer, the album is probably the most upbeat, relaxed, and musically pleasing of his entire solo career. Perhaps, as he faced his mortality, he no longer felt he had to indoctrinate the world with his religious convictions through his music. On the other hand, perhaps having Jeff Lynne around to both play and produce the album helped chip away at the wall of sound that tended to surround most of George's prior solo albums....burying his self-professed weak voice under layers of insturmentation that tended to drown out his earlier work.
I believe that from top to bottom it is by far his best solo album.

The only song I can't stand on Let It Be is Dig It.
It's just....weird.
Who knows what they say at the end when they do the high pitched voice.
I thought they said "Now Georgy Worgy will do, All Things Must..." and it just cuts off there. Which leads me to believe that All Things Must Pass might have been on Let It Be, but didn't make the cut.
But then again, I don't know.

Yes, there were a lot of things done during January 69 that wasn't recorded until later. All Things Must Pass being one of them, also several Abbey Road tunes (Octupus' Garden, Maxwell's, etc.).
What really surprised me was listening to the bonus CD with Let it Be....Naked, there's this one part that John starts playing this one piano part that strikes me the moment the first chord hit....the opening chords to imagine. Two and a half years before the album was released.

Hmm...that song isn't as unlikeable as people make it out to be, as I never skip it, which I do with songs which I just don't get, but I would never listen to it out of the context of the whole album, unlike a lot of songs on there which I listen to all the time, just skipping through tracks on my mp3 player. It's quite fun putting it on a CD player and watching people's reactions to it though.
When i was reading about all that "paul is dead" hoax stuff, i think it was Revolution 9 that had a backward message in it stating "turn me on dead man." That's why i always get creeped out when i listen to A day in the life and John sings "I'd love to turn you on"...

EDIT: "Light My Fire" was the song they performed. A lyric in that song "Girl, we couldn't get much higher" was supposed to be taken out by the band (a request of Ed). But while they performed, Jim still sang it. They never performed on Ed Sullivan again.
Yeah, and he didn't shake hands with the band either, which he always did. He was pissed, but it I were Morrison, I would have done it too

the phrase "I'd love to turn you on" is a sexual innuendo and i think A day in the Life was one of the first songs to have "rude" phrases/words.....
(see beatles anthology.)
might be wrong, but i thought it was said in the anthology dvd that that was a drug referrence. its tough to believe how uptight people used to be, ****.
...also, isnt it weird how two of the same word (that that) can be placed next to eachother in a sentence and still work. i'm gonna go eat some mushrooms

As far as the references in 'A Day in the Life', Turn you on was a drug reference. In the mid sixties the phrase was; 'Tune in, Turn on, and Drop out.' Dr. Timothy Leary was making headlines with the new wonder drug, LSD at that time. The counter culture, or 'hippies' as they were known in the vernacular, recommended Tune in -- get involved with changing social morals, Turn on -- expand your mind (drugs) and Drop out -- leave the older generation's establishment.
Ed Sullivan, during the sixties, was the original 'power broker' of the entertainment business then. One appearance on his show was enough to guarantee a new act a successful career in show business then. The Beatles manager Brian Epstien was wise to coach the boys to do what ever the Sullivan people wanted. It led to repeat tv appearances that brought them into more and more homes through out the nation. The Stones too, played ball. Look at them today. The Doors, as much as I love their music, made the wrong choice. Morrison always took himself a little too seriously and though the band down spiraled due mainly to Morrison's alcoholism and drug dependancy, a lot of doors closed (no pun intended) in the mainstream after the run-in with Sullivan.
Back then Sullivan was the 'establishment' the bands eluded to in protest songs. Ironically, unless you played ball, your message was rarely heard. Things did loosen up by the late sixties.

One of the greatest hidden drug references ever performed was in the chorus as 'I Am the Walrus' is winding down. The chant, although really was something like 'Oom-pah,' sounded suspiciously like 'Smoke pot, smoke pot, everybody smokes pot' during the finale of all the sped up and slowed down overdub effects going on in the song. Made top-ten 40 on all the radio stations too. Right smack dab in the heart of the heartland of America ( the mid-west), to boot. Whoo-hooo. ;)

So, what's your favorite Beatles album and era?
Mine'll have to be a toss up between Let It Be, Abbey Road, and Sgt. Peppers.
The Let It Be era of the Beatles was my favorite, even though they were on the verge of breaking up.
My favorite album is Revolver (the greatest album ever) and my favorite era is Revolver-Magical Mystery tour. I also really like the four new songs that were on Yellow Submarine, I wish they had made a full album.

Did you guys read about (in the CD manual) how after the final chord on A Day In The Life, John wanted some high pitched noise in there? If you did, can you explain why?
On A Day In The Life they put in a high pitched whistle that only dog's could hear. Why they did this, I don't know but it was taken off in later pressings of the album as well as Sgt. Pepper's Inner Groove because supposedly said a very bad message if played backwards. Which means my dad's album doesn't have it which really stinks. :(

Ya i'll have to listen for it too. That part after the song ends is weird too..it sounds like John saying "I couldn't have it any other way" or something like that, and then just repeated over and over again.
The track, cut into the 'inner groove' at the end of Sgt Peppers had no title and really wasn't a song per say. Most turntables then didn't have the mechanism that would lift the arm and return it to it's cradle at the end of the record. The needle would just continue in that last groove over and over until you physically got up and lifted it yourself.
John and his sense of humor thought it would be wild to have sound in that groove -- a never-ending loop. The result was a snippet of them fooling around. If you have ever heard the Christmas messages you'll recognize the nonsensical mutterings, British old fogey grunts and maniacal laughter as their trademark brand of humor. They were big fans and later became involved with Monty Python's Flying Circus -- especially Harrison. (The Pepper title itself was a bit of a tribute to the Pythons) The resulting loop of the sing-songy 'never have it any other way' with laughter going on for infinity was real mind-blower back then. It was left off the American LPs as on a technical level it was a pain to put in correctly and Capitol thought it un-nessecary. Some say played backwards it says 'We'll f--- you like supermen,' but I place no credibility in that.

5. Dig it
6. Let it Be
7. Maggie Mae
8. I've got a Feeling
9. one After 909
10. The Long and Winding Road
11.For you Blue
12. Get Back
Let it Be Naked songlist:
1. Get Back
2. Dig a Pony
3. For you Blue
4. The Long and Winding Road
5. Two of Us
6. I've got a feeling
7. One afer 909
8. Dont Let me Down
9. I me Mine
10. Across the Universe
11. Let it Be
As you can see there are differences between the song lists,
Also i think Naked is remastered seen it has a "fuller" sound then Let it Be which sounds tinny,
Let it Be has the little intros by John and a bit of chat, Naked doesnt,
Naked comes with a 2nd cd "Fly on the wall" which is just recording of the beatles discussing..
Thats all the differences that are obvious to me,
Sgt._Joker

Somethings i have noticed on fly on the walls:
If you look at the booklet on the last page it gives u a "programe" of Fly on the Wall,
The song Child of Nature (24secs a brief snipet,) is the "Jelous Guy" song to be,
some1 already menchioned it but there is a snipet of "Imagine to be"
the fly on the wall cd indicates that one of the early takes of Dont Let me Down, became Sun King later,
there is a snipet of All Things Must Pass,

Wow dude good review. The White album is by far my favorite album of all time. Yes, I do agree there was alot of content on that album, but that was what made it so great. Every song sticks in your mind ( Well maybe not ALL but you get me) and plagues it for days. In my opinion i think people give it harsh words to its length are crazy. Those simple little songs carry a little something of there own. Each one short, catchy, and fun to listen to. Ringo starrs work on "Dont pass me by" was splendid. It truly shows his talent as an artist and gives him a real moment to shine on the album. Long Long Long by john lennon is also a quite nice number. Its slow and wierd and kinda changes pace on you, wich is good. Between the great piano and great keyboard work on this, you got yourself a good song.
And i being a Huge Paul McCartney fan, feel i must stick up for some of his his work on the album. His songs were great. He Expressed his talent to cover multiple song types. I mean you got metal, pop, country, rock, and a somewhat of surf rock song. This really shows how talented he is as a singer/songwriter/musician.
And you cant forget george. Well, im gonna have to, cause im to tired to type any more.

My dad has like, a big cassette collection, and in it i found an 9 tape rocording of "The Beatles A - Z" on wlvq 96.3. The radio station played every beatles song in alphebetical order. Its awesome, i stayed up listing to almost all if it a few weeks back. Apperantly alot of radio stations did this.

If you get Let it Be... Naked, you get a second CD called Fly on the Wall and it has the Beatles sound clip of them recording stuff in the Let it Be sessions. All Things Must Pass is played there, so I'm guessing is the one you uploaded.

I have it. Its actually a bootleg off of an original copy this guy has at my local Record shop. He keeps the original to himself and keeps putting new copies on the shelf after theyve been sold.
As for the movie. its pretty good in my opinion. The Guys practice & goof around with all the stuff from Let it be (And 2 songs from Abbey road [ Octopus' Garden, Oh! darling]) . And then they perfom serious versions of a handful of tracks. The movie then ends with the rooftop Performance. A fantastic end to the movie.
If you can find a copy of this film i strongly suggest you pick it up. I dont know where you could find it, i suggest searching on Ebay, And just searching on google.

Hell yeah. It never was on DVD. The last time it was issued on home video formats was on VHS and Laserdisc in the early 80s. I saw ONE ORIGINAL copy at this movie rental house that has everything....its dated to 1981, and it wasn't in great of shape.
My uncle downloaded a direct Laserdisc rip off the net, so he has a near perfect copy on DVD that he burned himself.

Eh, if he did it right, whitch he probally didn't, he could have pulled it off. Songs such as Helter Skelter had an obvious influence on bands like the Ramones, so if he made it about influnces he could have made a decent thread that would have died within the hour.

-You Wont See Me
-And Your Bird Can Sing
-Oh! Darling
-Maxwells Silver Hammer
-Ob la Di Ob la Da
-Why dont we do it in the Road? (Did they overdub him playing that bass part, or was it john or george?)
-Your Mother Should Know
-Penny Lane
-Let it be
-Dear Prudence
-And Doctor Robert

I'd like to have that six string bass that either john or george would play whenever paul was playin piano. the one george uses during Hey Jude and John uses during Let It Be. there were others, but i (george isnt even sure if he or john played bass on a few songs) cant remember which ones. and pauls Ric that he used in the latter days is a beautiful piece of work (i liked it better before he had the paint stripped).
