Hmmm... it is tough, I admit.

Exciter, Better By You Better Than Me and Stained Class are all iconic JP songs.

However, as an album, Stained Class simply can't rival the non-stop awesomeness of Painkiller.

And besides, my favourite "classic" Priest album is still Sad Wings Of Destiny. ;)

You don't consider Stained Class to be "classic" Priest? I mean it was only a few years after Sad Wings and in the 70's era.

As far as the Painkiller and Stained Class debate goes, it depends on my mood. If I wanna headbang then I'll put Painkiller on. If I want some foot tapping addictive music, then I'll put Stained Class on. If I had to choose I'd say Stained Class. It was the second Priest album I got after British Steel, so I was pleasantly suprised as you can expect.

I'd highlight where I said "favourite classic Priest album" in my post, thereby saying that although Stained Class is a classic era Priest album, I still prefer Sad Wings Of Destiny to be my favourite, but you can just look at your quote and see that. :)

And yeah, it depends on the mood, too.

Haven't seen you on the forums for a while, actually.

Ahhh, now I see! I was just reading that a bit wrong. Probably cause I can't believe someone would choose Sad Wings over Stained Class :p

But then again, you think Ram It Down is a great album. You're not to be trusted!

Yeah, I don't frequent the forums as much anymore due to work and such. Anyway, the forums have gone downhill... letting Jonny boy win RMOTM? blasphemy I say.

Not to mention Scott Travis.

ThrashMaster27

Yeah, Les Bink is probably my fave Priest drummer, even if Scott Travis would run rings around him speed wise.

Well, Breakin' The Law contains one of the most iconic metal riffs of the '80s.

Metal Gods is great, yes, but Grinder is for the win.

And Painkiller is fairly unique for Judas Priest. British Steel is fairly representative of their transition period from hard rock to speed metal.

A good example of showing Glenn's skill over K.K's would be Defenders of the Faith, listen to the solo on the first track, that's Glenn and then the second track it's K.K after that it's easy to tell who is playing which solo because K.K uses a lot more artificial harmonics and has slightly less speed about him. :thumb:

With most two guitarist bands theres always that dynamic of having a main lead guitarist, even if both are considered leads. Theres almost never going to be two guys that are exactly the same skill-wise, and I'm pretty sure they know that. That's probably why Glenn does most of the solos. But either way, much respect to both of em. Quite possibly the greatest guitar pair in metal.

Considering Tipton messes up the Painkiller solo now, I don't think they're gonna pull off that dual lead in Ram it Down anytime soon :upset:

And they have no excuse for not playing Hard as Iron live, seeing as they've got the drummer for it now. Dave Holland was too slow for a lot of the stuff on Ram it Down, so they had to use a drum machine.

Do they play Dissident Aggressor or Dreamer Deceiver live?

Who knows whats going to happen on the next tour. They'll be playing the entire new album, so the rest of the set I would imagine would be the lesser known tracks.

Ok, has anyone noticed the similarity between the "Blood Red Skies" intro and "The Hellion?" It's just the same thing, but played in a different key. Did they just like that riff so they used it again, or is there something deeper there? Also, which one came first?

Riva

The Hellion came first, and I can see the similarity but I don't think it is the same thing, exactly.

It is definantly very similar. But i dont think its the EXACT same thing.

And the best priest songs are Painkiller, Hot Rock'n, The Sentinel, Turbo Lover, Turn On Your Light, Screaming For Vengence and Hell Bent For Leather. Judas Priest are a very good band and it is great that Halford is back, but Iron Maiden are still my favourite band, but only just, but Judas Priest are sitting right behind em.

I chose Turn On Your Light because sometimes soft songs are good to listen to, like Angel aswell, and Turbo Lover is very underrated...

And yes Ram It Down is a mad album:thumb:, i like the songs Ram It Down, Halfords singing on Love Zone is good, Come and Get It is a great song, same with Hard As Iron, I love the lyrics to Im A Rocker, and the cover to Johnny B. Goode is great, so yeah, i do like Ram It Down lol. Is that enough love for ya? (listen to Ram It Down(the song) on repeat and at the start/end Halford screams, it seems like he just keeps holding the note then the song starts over again, its heaps cool :thumb:)

And as much as i love Judas Priest, Maiden are better, but only just. ;)

I like Maiden as well as Priest, they're quite different so luckily I don't have to choose one or the other. Believe it or not, in the early 80s, the big 3 bands I was into were Priest, Maiden, and the Scorpions... Unfortunately The Scorpions went in too much of a pop direction for me to follow their newer albums

I don't see why why you would prefer Screaming for Vengeance. It has a lot of great songs, but Take These Chains, Pain and Pleasure, Fever and Devil's Child are pretty average.

Screaming for Vengeance has Electric Eye, Bloodstone, You've Got Another Thing Comin' and the title track, but Painkiller has Leather Rebel and One Shot at Glory and eight other great songs besides.

Riva
06-13-2006, 06:22 PM

Metal Gods is easily the best track off British Steel.

Jaffe
06-14-2006, 02:29 PM
I think Defenders of the Faith is one of their best albums too. Jawbreaker, The Sentinel, Freewheel Burning. Three outstanding tracks. But when I'm in a bad mood, nothing beats listening to Rocka Rolla. It's really some progressive stuff there. I just love Ian's freely bass playing on the whole album. Run of the Mill is definately the best track on it, and it beats all the other slower "ballads" they have ever released later. The nearly three minutes long (!) solo is just outstanding, and sounds like nothing they have ever made later! And when Mr. Halford starts the singing / screaming in the end, I nearly start to cry :p

But other than Run of the Mill, other albums have much better songs, even though many of the songs on Rocka Rolla is very addictive (One for the Road, the title track, Cheater). The second part of Dying to Meet You is great, too.

I recommend this album if you want to hear a completely different and bluesy side of Priest.

(Wow, that nearly became a review :p)

But Defenders has The Sentinel, which is my all-time favourite Priest song :D
For pretty much every song on Screaming for Vengeance, I can think of at least one Defenders track that I like better. At least three if you don't count Electric Eye.

Priest are actually pretty ashamed of Rocka Rolla. They especially hated the production team. I remember reading that the producer made them cut Caviar and Meths down from a ~7 minute song to a ~2 minute instrumental. I'd have liked to hear the long version, I like the album version a lot already.

It does have some good tracks though. I love Rocka Rolla and Run of the Mill.

I've seen Rocka Rolla in a bookstore for cheap, so I may end up picking it up. I just really need that and Sin after Sin for me to be happy with my Priest collection.

I think I can live without Point of Entry, Turbo and the Ripper albums.

They ain't ashamed of the material, it's just the bad production... And Gull Records (which owns the rights for the first two albums) won't give Priest any credits and keeps selling "Best of Priest" albums with songs from the two first albums...

If you want to hear the full length version of Caviar and Meths, Al Atkins (the former singer in Priest, which wrote it), has released it on one of his albums, along with his original version of Victom of Changes and Never Satisfied. I think the album is named "Victim of Changes".

Turbo, Jugulator and Demolition I can understand, but Point of Entry has Heading out to the Highway, Desert Plains, Turning Circles, All the Way and You Say Yes (:p). The album is worth it just for the first two songs I mentioned.

And if the bastards had released Heart of a Lion on Turbo it would've made that album worth purchasing too

Anyone heard Ripper Owens' new band? Great stuff... If you liked Jugulator, you'll love it

Jugulator wasn't too bad. Nothing compared to the other Priest stuff though.

Today I sat down and listened to Stained Class again (long time since last time I listened to it). It's really an amazing album! Actually, of all songs on the album, I seem to like Savage best, despite many people calling it a filler or one of the weakest on the album. Rob screams like hell on the intro!

I'm surprised Stained Class doesn't get the attention of Painkiller etc I really like it. Beyond the Realms of Death has my favourite guitar solo.

Yeah, I think Painkiller is a little overrated too. But don't get me wrong, it's a good album, but it get far too much attention over (what I see as) better albums, like for example Stained Class.

Painkiller isn't overrated; the older Priest albums are underrated.

Exactly. People need to pay more attention to the late '70s, early '80s.

Exactly, Riva. All the albums from Rocka Rolla to Hell bent for Leather hold a very good quality level, and are probably quite overlooked (specially the two or three first). I wont say that British Steel and Point of Entry has the same quality that those albums have. Maybe Screaming for Vengeance and Defenders of the Faith can be compared...

Anyway, the best thing about Priest, is that it's so varied from album to album. Each album has something special, a new sound, tempo, etc. If you look at other bands like for example Maiden or AC/DC, it's very often the same over and over again from album to album. If you're in a sad mood, Priest has a song for that. If you're happy, a song from Turbo will do (not kidding).

I agree, although at the same time I like how some bands don't change their style.

It's a double edged sword, really.

Hardly, go listen to the album 'killers' then the album 'somewhere in time'

Well, by that I meant songs from Maiden with Bruce, sorry. Their two first albums are quite different. But listen to something from the other albums with Bruce.

Allthough, I kinda expected that answer from you, since you are a fanboy...

Haha. If I'm happy I don't want to be depressed by Turbo. :p

I have been trying to stop talking about maiden in a priest thread but seriously you have no idea what your talking about when you're saying maiden havent changes their sound over the years.
Do you really need another example?
Listen to 'Seventh son of a seventh son' then try listening to any song off of 'no prayer for the dying' or 'fear of the dark'.

That being said i'll try to keep my maiden posts in here to a minimum.

If you like Maiden that much, post in the Maiden thread! I just used Maiden as a example, because I KNOW that many people agree that they sound very much the same.

By the way: I listened to tracks from Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, and from Fear of the Dark. Apart from the synth on Seventh Son, I didn't hear any big difference in the style or sound...
