If you could pick any 11 players in the world - to make up a football team, who would they be?
I'll post mine in a minute once i've thought about it.

A simple 4-4-2.
Petr Cech
(I'd take Cech over Buffon just because of the more goalscorers he's got to face in the Premiership.)
Ferdinand
John Terry
Campbell
Nesta
(I don't understand why so many people are taking Roberto Carlos. He's played like trash this season, as well as most of Real Madrid. Just watch the last Barca - Real match.)
Nedved
Pires
Lampard
Ronaldinho
Henry
Shevchenko
I think that's a pretty formidable starting 11.

Eto'o from Barca is playing brilliantly right now, I had a tough time choosing between him and Shevchenko. Henry's a no-brainer.

Roberto Carlos isn't even a shadow of the player he once was. He has no place in the Real Madrid side or Brazil, and certainly no place in a current "Best XI"

The man scored THIRTY goals last season, and has scored twenty plus goals for the past 3. Not to mention he's a golden boot winner. He's already netted 11 in 13 games this year.

That's not my point. We've all seen Henry single-handedly destroy teams in the premiership to the level of Liverpool. However, he's never been the man to make the difference in any of the recent encounters with Chelsea or Manchester United - his form is never the same, the true great players come out in these matches, such as Vieira and Bergkamp. He also struggles to make a difference in the champions' League (with the excpetion of the Inter Milan match), and in major international tournaments, where, again, his greater teamates shine, like zinedine zidane.

I've decided to pick a purely Premiership team and play a flat 4-4-2
1. Petr Cech
2. Thomas Hitzlsperger
3. Ashley Cole
4. Sol Campbell
5. John Terry
6. Patrick Vieira
7. Sean Wright-Phillips
8. Luis García
9. Robert Pires
10. Thierry Henry
11. Ruud van Nistelrooy

Ok, ok, I see what you're saying. From that perspective, you definitely nailed it. How is old is Bergkamp, anyway?

I always thought he was a good player. He never got a chance a Real Madrid with Raul, Morientes etc. Good to see him getting a chance and proving himself now.

When Barcelona bought Eto'o, Real still owned 50% of him, so they had to agree to sell him to Barca, Real must have really underrated him, he's banging them in this season!

Yeah its hard to believe they didn't rate him, he was banging them in all last season too, absolutly torched Real in one of those games. Guess he doesn't sell as many shirts as Michael Owen though

Surely Rooney is compensation enough for missing them? Man U can't have it ALL their own way, if that happened football would be boring, people wouldn't pay to watch a game that they already know the result of.

I agree he's a class player and all, but I left him out simply because I'd rather have the two other CM's I listed in my team. Deco is brilliant, he makes the players around him better, just look at how he inspired Porto to the CL title last year. And as for Stevie Gerrard, he's a far better two-way player than Ronaldinho, he's not as flashy but he gets the job done.
Welcometothezoo
11-28-2004, 10:05 AM
thumbs up for Deco, but gerrard...................Ronaldinho's different class, just because he's not two-way has little importance. This is a world XI, with the 5 best defensive in existence, no desparate need for the defensive midfield side of things.
iwillbearockstar
11-28-2004, 10:33 AM
I didn't list the best 11 players in the world, but the players who would make up the best football team...imo there's always a need for a strong two-way central midfield player in any team that can be considered the worlds best.

Every great central mid should be two-way. If not, defense is normally hung out to dry on any good attack without defensive support from the midfield. Some people just can't argue with numbers Ronaldinho produces. If you want to cure the problem, put him as an attacking midfielder and someone else his defensive counterpart. I did put him in my midfield, and totally agree that he's not as complete as a 18 to 18 CM should be, but his creativity can't be ignored. He makes many things happen.

i'm no goal keeping coach, but i reckon it's techinque he lacks most. His reflexes are outstanding, but he hasn't got the art of making things look so simple, where the greats do. And i think that's all down to technique.
