DR HI-BEAMS are pure stainless steel strings, not coated or plated. These are some of the best stainless steel strings on the market. If you like slap, funk, or the brighter, trebley tones common in modern bass styles, you will love these strings. The Have a long life, though they do initialy have the OMGWTF twanginess for a few days, then they "Settle" but still are quite bright. Stainless steel strings, are less warm, and quite a bit brighter then the typical nickle plated roundwound. While i like the brightness, i miss some of the warmth, it is a trade off. One nice benefit though is the fact that stainless steel strings dont eat frets. Pure nickle strings, while being nice and warm, are also incredibly damaging to frets. Some people say the oposite, but i have seen Pure nickle strings do alot of damage, and my frets havent been fazed by these strings at all. I have noticed very little wear in the two months i have had these strings. Also longevity. The strings i have kept a good deal of snap, i have played the bass hard, in two bands, the tone has remained consistent, they arent as wow bright as they were in the first week, but they are far from dead. They also arent harsh on my fingers at all, my flatwounds were harder, due to the greatly increased tension. The G string is still a little to twangy for me, but i still havent played a single roundwound set that had a G that pleased me. The main negative thing is the price, they are about 28 dollars a set, which is a little pricey comepared to some brands, but they do last a long time. With these strings, my j bass, and my EQ settings, i have the most amazing gowly tone.
