View Full Version : Greatest frontman ever?
whole_lotta_zep

Many people bicker, but who was the greatest frontman of all time?
It's been puzzlin man for generations, wel, at least 2.
There has been many great frontmen, such as the legendary Robert Plant, or the ever charismatic Freddie Mercury, but who was the best?
I will leave you with that thought.
Post freely and enjoy

I gotta go with Mick Jagger, but Page and Axl are close
I would have to go with Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden. Such a commanding voice, you just cant ignore him onstage.

There don't seem to be too many great frontmen around today, and those that are differ from the frontmen of past decades such as Freddie Mercury or Mick Jagger. Though Zack de la Rocha from his time in RATM deserves a mention.

Axl Rose is a legend but I wouldn't say he was the greatest because, well, he stopped turnin up! I mean can u imagine like david lee roth or freddie mercury doin that? I mean Axl rose was a master, with his singin style and his lizard like movements, he was a god, but he wasn't a good band member, bein so 'I am the singer so I tell you wot to do.' although he was a legend he was a **** band member which is a shame

What does great mean?
Band getting known/popular because of him?
jim morrison, kurt cobain
skill?
have to think about that one, because a really good frontman in my opinion wouldnt attract attention only on him as frontman and therefore isnt that known and obvious.
legend status?
mercury,plant

Freddy Mercury.... I dislike David Roth... To me he is a wanker. Actually,
I think most of my dislike from Roth is increased by more of some of his
really hardcore followers.

i think "best frontman" means the person who is most likely to lead a band towards success, who would turn any band into a great one instantly. if thats the case, id have to go with mr. jimmy page. (on second thought, dont forget jimi hendrix)
but if you mean just the coolest frontman who is as charismatic as he is talented, then id have to go with jim morrison. people are still obsessed and intruiged by him 30 years after his death.
personal favorites: morrison, hendrix, page, staley, cobain, mercury, bon scott, too many to name one.

Without a shadow of a doubt its gotta be Bruce Dickinson :D Hes one of the few frontmen thats been around for so long and hasnt lost it
He has such a powerful voice live
His crowd intraction is fantastic-I have never seen another frontman to quite live up to Bruces standards.
With Bruce its not an act-you can see that he genuinely loves what he does-Youve got this short guy with an immense voice who is constantly hopping around the stage, jumping over monitors and leaning as close as he can to the crowd constantly trying to get them going(youd know what I mean if youve ever seen em live or heard Running Free from Live After Death or Drifter from Beast Over Hammersmith)
He has far more energy than bands half his age and I also find his stage comments bloody hilarious(he does a rant in Live After Death about how ST Coleridge smoked pot and that Queen Elizabeth took it for her period pains and you see Bruce rubbing his stomach and making faces while talking bout this  )
And lets not forget "Scream for me....."

Clapton, in most of his band projects, was not a frontman. He may have been the best member in some cases, but his style isn't really that of a great frontman. He hardly sang in Cream or Blind Faith, and he wasn't like Angus Young with crazy dancing. He stood still a played his part. Great player, but he's not a frontman in my eyes. Cream was more under the influence of Bruce, anyway.

Definatly James Hetfield
Not only is he an excellent singer who can scream and growl with the best of 'em, but he can really sing, (Fade to Black, Nothing else Matters), AND he is probably the best rhythm guitarist in metal. Hetfield is most of the rhythm in the band.
Last, he writes almost all the songs, the only member contributing as much as him possibly being cliff.

Actually Cliff did not write many Metallica songs. Mustaine wrote a lot of Kill Em' All. Cliff wrote Orion, some on Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightning, and Kill Em' All. All the other songs were Hetfield and Ulrich. Hammet didn't write much, and obviously after Master of Puppets, Cliff didn't write anything. Look at the CD credits, Hetfields usually listed first. So everything from ...And Justice for All to St. Anger (excluding Garage, Inc) was written mostly by Hetfield and Ulrich. Therefore Cliff did not contribute anywhere as much as Hetfield. Not that Cliff wasnt great.
But I agree with Hetfield being a good frontman, he made the band basically, and kept it together.

*Opeth whore alert!*
I love Mikael's voice, and even his more recent growl, his lyrics, and his guitar work along with Lindgren
So, It's pretty obvious who I choose
Jim morrison is great but besides him...Eddie Vedder of pearl jam is also one of the greatest..... actually there are allot of great frontmans.....
Daniel Johns of silverchair is one of them......
If we talk about range, we're talking about
Roy Khan
If we're talking about punch, technicality, power
dickinson
If we're talking about both
Geoff Tate

how can johnny rotten not be classified as one of the greatest frontmen ever?
His attitude, image, lyrics made him the ultimate 'individual', which is something i now see many bands attempting to be, but really all they are doing is copying him. Sure he may not still be talked about very much anymore, but take a look around, take a look at the sex pistols, similarities? wHaT aLL tHe random capital letters made with cut out bits of newspaper that i often see in an attempt to look outragous? sex pistols artwork?
What about all these bands such as Greenday, writing lyrics constisting of 'OMG I HATE AMERICA' and creating silly metaphors in some vain attempt to spark outrage, these lyrics i hear from these modern punk bands - of which there are many - just sound weak. Of course there are many other great songwriters, however i feel that nobody is able to match the desperation shown in the powerful lyrics of Johnny Rotten.
His image is second to none, he is fortunate enough to be born with ginger hair and a face and stare that could kill, nobody looked like him. Of course there will be the argument of 'O NO IMAGE DOESNT MATTER, DONT JUDGE BOOK BY ITS COVER' but quite frankly, it does matter.
I am from the UK and i believe that alot of people on these forums maybe american, therefore his lyrics may not have such a profound effect. But Johnny Rotten's image is still there, he steered the sex pistols into the way they looked, and for once, instead of the UK copying america for fashion, america copied the UK. The Sex Pistols KILLED rock and roll, and paved the way for thousands of bands to start up. I hear alot of you voting for Kurt Cobain of Nirvana, however they were heavily influenced by the sex pistols, and to be honest, kurt was just conforming to a ****ing uniform, theres not much special about what he did

If your diea of charisma is "something old, something new, something from our jurassic period. WRATHCHILD!"
and
"this is a song about something that should be familiar to all of us, but sometimes is not."
Careful not to confuse being a twat on stage and "stage presence"
He sure can sing tho- although I prefer The frist 2 albums. Paul' voice is better and the songs are so much less... Repetitive? Cheesey?

Thats really unfair. I love all those bands, including NIRVANA: How can you blame them for the fact that Guns, Skid & metallica started bitching at each other resp. started releasing crap music? All those bands had a choice. Nobody forced the Gunners to quit, it was as a result of inner conflict. The same way Metllica chose to conform rather than go underground (which was really, really lame, although the Black Album did kick a lot of ***, no matter what people say)

I completely agree, and now look what we're stuck with; same sounding crap like Rancid, Green Day etc. Alot of the post Nirvana artists only focused on writing lyrics and forgot about the compostition (Nirvana included), which in the end, didn't turn out to be the best idea: "I'm so horny, that's ok my willy's good". Yes, absolutely groundbreaking lyrics......er I think not.
Anyway best frontmen:
David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar (he may not be as cool a Roth but he can still rock at 57 years of age!)
Axel Rose
Bruce Dickenson
Zack De La Rocha
Justin Hawkins (The Darkness-surprised no one's mentioned him)
Guess you guys have not heard Geoff Tate (Queensryche). Show me one man who's got half the range he's got.

Well, Nirvana was never really about writing ground-breaking poetry. Their lyrics were more ment as a reflection of the nihilism and sense of the hopelessless that is life that were spreading amongst a large part of the american youth. So its kinds pointless to start arguing weater (sp?) or not their lyrics had any deeped points to them.
And the reason that nobody has mentioned Jutsin yet is because everybody hates the Darkness, as they should

Wow, you're really ignorant to other peoples opinions. I believe that Billie Joe is one of the best, but I didn't put him in my list because I thought there were others better than him. And by the way, people can put frontmen from other genres than rock and metal and put it in a poll for a forum.

I'm going to have to agree with Paranoidd. The fanboyism around here is nauseating.
My choices-
Rob Halford: Only mentioned by three people in here. What's wrong with some of you people? Rob was and is the voice of Judas Priest with exceptional range, control, and sustain and a healthy dose of metal charisma. Remember, it was Rob who invented the look of Judas Priest and in turn gave us the standard dress code of metal. I know some of you are going to bitch that that's insignificant, but being a trendsetter in any way, shape, or form is a major accomplishment in itself.
Bruce Dickinson: I think Bruce's greatness has been accurately summed up already.
Freddie Mercury: Same as above.
Ronnie James Dio: Say what you want about the subject matter of his songs, that man has got balls. Not to mention he has noe of the best preserved voices in metal. He may be egotistical, but he has the talent and charisma to back it up.
