I have:
- Live from Tokyo
- 5 years in a LiveTime
- Scenes from New York
- Live at Budokan
They are all worth it. Especially Live at Tokyo. Watching them perform the Ytse Jam............. is it even possible to play like that???
Grab at least a couple.
Yeh Myung is definatley a musical genius, and you're right we've only seen like 2% of his capacity. They need to let him just go crazy one day.

The Instrumeledy is my favorite on the DVD...I came in my pants so many times, its like seeing a really awesome magic show, you are like "whoa, how the **** do they do that?"
I know I'm a little late but I bought the new album (I know its like Octvarium, but I can't spell it yet, so sue me assholes ;) )
I wasn't that impressed, I had the impression that it was trying to be hard, but wasn't quite there...didn't have the oomph that ToT had.
I admit, I do love The Root of All Evil, These Walls and Panic Attack...I dont know, I might have to listen to it a lot more...been going back and forth between so many albums :)

Word. Octavarium was pretty anticlimactic. Its an ok album, but it wasnt even near being worth all the build up that was behind it.
And yeah that instrumedley at Budokan PHKN PWNS. I have SFNY, 5YIAL, IAWLIT, and Budokan...and Budokan is probably the best dvd. Although SFNY is pretty friggin close.
I'd actually go so far as to say that Myung is the best musician in the band. Portnoy is pretty overrated...he's a good drummer but nothing great, like a lot of people say he is. Petrucci's good as well (very good in fact), but showboats a bit too much...he doesn't focus on the music so much as himself at times, although he can play with a lot of feeling as well). Ruddess suffers from the same sort of thing as Petrucci in my opinion, albeit to a lesser extent. With Myung, he can keep up with Petrucci at times, but he also knows how to sit back and let the music happen, rather than try and force the issue too much. He might not be the most talented musician in the band, but I'd say he understands the music better.
I agree, I read a fan bio on Myung, and it said he's pretty quiet, which, if I ever made it big, would be me, so Myung is probably my favourite musician from a personality point of view.
Just sit back and enjoy the music, even if you are an amazing musician and could go around saying how **** good you are.
I would really like a Dream Theater album were they let Myung explore more, maybe he should join the bandwagon and go do a solo album :o

Does anyone have the full Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence?
like the whole 42 minutes of it?
Ive been looking for it forever!!!
It's split into like 8 songs, isn't it?

Uhh...the track Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence is the second disc of the 6DOIT album split into tracks..only the band has the "one-42 minute song" version of it since Portnoy didn't want people to have to skip through say 20 mins of the 42 to get to a certain part

anybody ever haer the Working man tribute to rush where sebastian bach is singing jacobs ladder with portnoy? (petrucci and JL were on the album to, not sure if JP was on that song).that dude has some serious fuking pipes on him.
What they need to do imo is fire labrie, Rudess, get sebastian and Kevin moore back in there. and DT will be reborn.

They have good and bad. For the most part, the good heavily outweighed the bad. The last couple of records have not been so.
What makes me like them is when they do things right, its like nothing else in the world. A change of seasons is one of the most perfect songs I have ever heard. There is not a part I do not like the whole 23 minutes. I will always have respect for DT because of that song.

I do not know if this conversation has been posted yet, but what do you guys think of Octavarium? I thought was similar to "Falling Into Infinnity" only heavier. Overall it was pretty good.
3.5/5 (however, I have only listend to half of the title track, everyone says it is the best)

I don't consider 6DoIT 1 song. I think it's a pretty cheap way to say "hey look we wrote a song that is 42 minutes long." But each of the songs is good in its own way. 6DoIT is a great album though, my favorite being Disc 1 though. Some motherf.ucker stole it off of me though, along with my CD player which it was in.
They should let Myung explore.

Well, DT is quite unpredictable. They bring out an album and you don't know if its gonna bomb or be a success. But, over the eight albums they've done, they mainly released masterpieces, like Images and Words, Awake, SFAM, Train of Thought(Yeah, I actually like this one), and now, Octavarium. But that's not all that attracts me to DT. They have AMAZING, TALENTED members. Myung, The best(imo), Petrucci, the God of the guitar, Portnoy, Amazing drummer, Rudess, the best keyboardest.
Fianally LaBrie, who, well, you kinda have to get used to him, but when you are, you would most probably love it.
Dream Theater had its ups and downs, but overall, they remain a strong, solid prog-metal band.Classic. :thumb:

james is actually a very good singer, regardless of whether or not people like his voice, as a lot of professionals have said before. awake shows off just how good he is, on songs like lifting shadows off a dream or voices.
as for why i like them, i just like their style and music. i like the complexity and virtuosity of them aswell though of course, one other thing about that is that you can listen to the songs much more without ever getting bored. i was listening to the dance of eternity a few weeks ago and heard a keyboard part near the end that i'd never even heard before which just keeps you interested longer.

what makes you guys like dream theatre Hmm, there are a few albums I like at this moment, which includes Octavarium and possibly 6DOIT. The second disc on 6DOIT is broken into 8 tracks, yes, and they are:
I. Overture
II. About To Crash
III. War Inside My Head
IV. The Test That Stumped Them All
V. Goodnight Kiss
VI. Solitary Shell
VII. About To Crash (Reprise)
VIII. Losing Time/Grand Finale
I think Goodnight Kiss is a great song. Has everyone checked out Portnoys radio files on his site?

I have all their CD's, so I could burn my own. But let's change that to DVD. In no specific order:
- Metropolis pt. 1
- Learning to Live
- Lines in the Sand
- Stream of Consciousness
- The Glass Prison
- The Root of All Evil
- Panic Attack
- Never Enough
- Sacrificed Sons
- Erotomania
- The Dance of Eternity
- Fatal Tragedy
- Misunderstood
- The Ytse Jam
Can't remember anymore. Later.

In my opinion every Dream Theater album is a "Best Of ..." at that point in their career. But some standouts on a Greatest Hits would have to be:
Metropolis Pt I
Erotomania
Lie
Take the Time
The Dance of Eternity
Home
Surrounded
The Glass Prison
Stream Of Conciousness
... thats about one CD worth of great music, wish I could throw Octavarium on there too but its just too long. Maybe a bonus disc of something hehehe.

The Ytse Jam
Take The Time
Metropolis Part 1: The Miracle And The Sleeper
A Mind Beside Itself Part 1: Erotomania
Hollow Years
Trial Of Tears
Overture 1928
Beyond This Life
The Dance Of Eternity
The Glass Prison
Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence III: War Inside My Head
Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence IV: The Test That Stumped Them All
Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence VI: Solitary Shell
This Dying Soul
The Root Of All Evil
Panic Attack
....and that is REALLY cutting it down. As you can see, it would not be a simple one-disc matter. At least four would be necessary to do the band any justice

The only song where his vocals are any good is "The Afterlife", which I think he did better than LaBrie could have. Other than that, he's not a great singer. Just not that adaptable. Just try and imagine him doing "Learning to Live" or "The Glass Prison" or "Lines in the Sand". He'd ruin those songs.

The first obvious one is names. Part 1 is called "The Miracle And The Sleeper". These are two of the main characters talked about in Part 2.

Anyone managed to link them all together...into like one big AA super track? I can see how it would fit - The ending notes of TGP are the starting notes of TDS, and the end of TDS can easily be made to fit with TROAE in many ways (ie straight into the main riff of TROAE or leaving the build up....whichever). Not like that, because at the end of TGP you have the noise of breaking glass after then ending notes and theres the big build up at the start of TROAE. I was just thinking of stitching them all together.
Meh, leave it.

Here ya go fellas. It's not the whole tracks, just the connections which could work live. Not that the discord of This Dying Soul and The Root Of All Evil are actually different!
I would have put all 3 tracks running into another on here, but that's like a 30 minute audio track, and even at 64kbps, it's still a 15 meg file which I can't be arsed to upload. Maybe another day.

I'd have to agree with Digital Love on that one
Metallica is NOT definitely better than Dream Theater. In fact, let's just turn that around a bit, and the truth will be told: Metallica is DEFINITELY NOT better than Dram Theater. I'd like to see Lars keep up with Portnoy's playing. Kirk and Robert are fast; James is great at what he does (solid rhythm playing), but that's about it. Metallica is a great band, but technically, they can't touch Dream Theater. The DT level of ability (playing AND songwriting-wise) is just way above 'Tallica.

Yeah, I had heard people saying they were similar before I bought the album, and when I heard 'Panic Attack' it sounded a bit like 'Stockholm Syndrome' and I thought that was it. Then came 'Never Enough', with exactly the same riff as 'Hysteria'! Also, I thought that the clean parts at the start of 'Sacrificed Sons' sounded like 'Sing For Absolution', the vocal melody sounds similar.

'never enough' has the same feel as 'stockholm syndrome'. the verse sounds very similar, they both use a similar key, they are both in drop-D tuning, and the structure is similar too.
labrie does do a matt bellamy rip-off vocal style in Panic attack - the bit where it goes 'run, try to hide, overwhelmed, by this complex delirium'

This has probably been discussed before, but, the best songs in Portnoy's song trilogy are, from favorite to least:
The Glass Prison > This Dying Soul > The Root Of All Evil.
Too bad they get progressively less good, but what's really interesting is listening to all three of them in a row. Pretty mind blowing.
Aren't "This Dying Soul" and "The Root Of All Evil" more parts added on to "The Glass Prison"? I heard that from a buddy of mine, and you can even hear the similar lyrics in both, but I need verification :p

the root of all evil is the sequal to the glass prison and this dying soul. if you look at 6DOIT's and ToT's booklets, the two songs are also labeled: the glass prison is labelled I - III (there are 3 sections), this dying soul is labelled IV - V (there are 2 sections), and thats where the root of all evil comes in, from section VI.
Octavarium just happens to have 5 sections.

hmmm, well let's see:
1. Panic Attack is mediocre at best. The rediculously trite lyrics don't help the song either. Labrie's Bellamy impersonation is annoying and pointless. The song is a numetal song and if you think that's real DT than you should stop listening now.
2. You call the Root Of All Evil a pop rock song? Well atleast it doesn't have the infamous rapping in This Dying Soul.
3. If you think they have never writen a "pop rock" song before, than do yourself a favor and listen to "Another Day" or "Lifting Shadows Off A Dream" or "Through Her Eyes." They're all pop rock songs. In fact, Through Her Eyes is even more so an R&B-Pop song. So, don't complain about Octavarium having "pop rock" songs when they've already written many and it is part of their style.
4. Do you even know what a sell out is?

I agree. I quite like the songs you mentioned, but the ones they wrote for 8vm were incredibly bad.

Except that TALW doesn't have any rock to it at all. It's more of just a pop ballad. Another Day has distortion guitars and a solo.
What happened to James' voice? At first listen I never though much of his vocals on Awake, but I've been listenning to it quite a bit recently, his vocals are very good. (Better then any other album I think, although there are 2 I haven't heard).
Does anyone else feel this way?

his vocals on Octavarium are brilliant, maybe because he doesnt do any 'WHOAAAAAAAA's in a really high pitch. he supposedly damaged his voice sometime, but it seemed to have brought the best of him :p

I think it's by a band called Acid Rain. It is definitely a take on Stream Of Conciousness using the songwriting charts supplied by DT themselves for the Songwriting Contest before TOT came out. Compare the structures yourselves!

Octavarium is DTs newest album along with their 8th song on the album which lasts exactly 24 minutes. It has a slow, rather boring beginning, but once it gets going DT throws all they have into it. Octavarium, is as DT says themselves tuned down compared to TOT. Drumming is not as spectacular, but still amazing. The album is a lot more melodic than TOT, which is nice of course. I bought the CD with 2 friends and we listened to it on the way home in my friends dads car, with the base up. THe 1st song, THe root of all evil blew us away. THe build up is amazing, really gets the adranaline pumping. As far as my fave album i cant really say. TOT is absoluty amazing, great drumming, just fantastic stuff. 6DOIT is also amazing, more melodic than TOT. LaBries vocals are amazing in Misunderstood. the song 6DOIT itself shows a completely different side of DT. Change of Seasonswas my first DT CD i bought. The guitar build up is amazing, and is by far the best guitar build up DT has. Once those drums got going DT just grabbed hold of me. THeir cover of Deep Purple's Perfect Strangers is amazing, even though Portnoy does not follow Ian's drum beat, and sticks to a basic ac/dc beat. The guitar solo they added is one of my faves. I bought Images and Words last week and i love the drumming in the album, and its so beautifully melodic. Its just such a change from their new stuff. I never listened to one album over and over again of theirs, i keep switiching from one to another, even listening to all the DTs albums i have in one day. I have Portnoys Liquid Tensiondrumming DVD, which hugely motivates me to play more drums. DT is my joint fave band along with Iron Maiden, which im listening to right at this moment as i am typing. "The evil that men do lives on and on" ooooooooh ^^ DT are just amazing, and i feel sry for the people who are missing out on it

Octavarium is the 1st time that LaBrie screams, which shows a whole new aspect of his vocal capabilities. He is amazing, but he does not have the power and stage energy of Bruce Dickinson, which is a shame. His voice is a lot softer than bruces, and he has a calming effect.

Octavarium is definitely worth it. LaBrie screams in some parts of the songs, a sort of high pitched shriek. Quite cool, nothing you would expect from him, but thats what makes it all the better. Also John Myrung, the bassist, comes out more on this album than in others, with bass intros and solos and all that. :)

I dunno, I've been trying to convince some mate's how good DT is since I got Scenes a few years ago, they hadn't been convinced, until I played them Octavarium (Which I found weird, I definately didn't see it as their best). Well personally I'd say you've got their best album (SFAM) and their worst album (FII).
The next album to get would definatly have to be Images and Words, unless you want something heavier, in which case try Train of Thought. 6DIOT is also a good buy if that's all you can get hold of.

Hi,
I'm new at this Dream Theater thing but I love them. I downloaded As I Am and loved it. I decided to download a couple of more songs off of Train Of Thought and also loved them. Anyway today I was at the music store and on the 2/$15 rack they had Awake. They also had Badmotorfinger by Soundgarden so I got both. I love what I've heard off of it so far. What are some other ones besides the ones I listed.

I've had a weird Dream Theater occurance, and I'm hoping someone can shed some light on my dilemma. Here goes....
When an album comes out, most of the time I download a few songs and decide whether I like it or not. If I like what I hear, I'll go buy the album. So the day Octavarium came out, I downloaded all 8 songs from the album. I really liked it so just recently I went out and bought the album. Here's the dilemma.... The songs that I downloaded and the songs on the album are in no way the same. Completely different!
The songs that I downloaded are all labeled the same as the album tracks. I also know that these mystery songs that I downloaded are studio recorded and very recent. The songs are very heavy like Train of Thought, and La Brie's voice sounds very recent. I know they're new songs because I have all of DT's previous albums.
Can someone please tell me what I'm listening to!
Thanks.

They have a few DVDs. Live in Tokyo, Live Scenes from NY, Budokan... I've only seen Tokyo.
JP does have an instructional out called Rock Discipline. Many say its very good, I personally don't think its all that great. You can find it in 4 parts on Limewire if you don't want to blow the $50 on it, and its got a book form too.

Live at Budokan is by far the best DVD in terms of quality. The show is shot and edited excellently. The set contains a large amount from Train of Thought and 6DIOT (although little from Awake), but I would reccomend that as being the best.
Live Scenes From New York has some excellent material on it, and is still great, but is very poorly edited, with lots of silly camera effects and cut scenes relating to the SFAM story. Also the DVD doesn't contain the full set of their performance, I'd recommend getting the live CD of the concert before the DVD.
The double disc set is also good. The Tokyo concert from the I&W tour is great, just to see how the band have evolved, and very entertaining seeing how they used to look like an 80s hair metal band (plus you get to see John Myung running round the stage and headbanging!)
The second disc is a montage of footage from between Awake and Falling Into Infinity. Some of the footage is quite good, others aren't so great. I'm not a huge fan of this era of DT so I didn't enjoy it as much as the others, but is still worth getting eventually.

I think they're classes as progressive metal, but I think they do more progressive rock...
Awake, Train of Thought, A Change of Seasons, and maybe Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence are their heavier albums, in my opinion.
I might mention Images & Words here, I think it's pretty good. While definately not heavy, it has a metal-vibe I think.
Some people would say Scenes From a Memory though.. But meh, and Octavarium had/has potential, but in my mind something just doesn't click.

But if it was equalized better it would have been a flawless show. Hopefully they'll get it worked out for the other shows.

I really need to know what it's called.
Thanks

I just revently bought mt first Dream Theater Cd. I bought Octavarium. I had heard good things about this band, (Tool forum). So i thought that i'd give them a try. I enjoy them, they're faster stuff i prefer, but they're slow songs are less apealing to me, even though i'm much mroe for slower songs. Overall i give them 2 thumbs up :thumb: :thumb: and i'll be looking into getting more of their Cd's.

If you want to hear them they are on the Limewire P2P program, just search for Dream Theater or Octavarium, and they are labeled as the songs from Octavarium.
Can someone please tell me what I'm listening to!
Thanks.
I know what you're talking about, I got the same songs you have off Limewire a while back and recently discovered that they arent in fact from Octavarium or any other DT album. I am in the process of transcribing the lyrics to them and I was going to make a post about my find. I will still post the transcribed lyrics if anyone wants to check them out. You are right about them sounding more like Train of Thought and I wonder if they were supposed to be on it but got cut from the list. I dont think they are from any kind of new unreleased album they recorded for obvious reasons (the release of the actual Octavarium only a few months ago and they are currently on tour supporting it). Ironically I think these mystery songs are better than what I have heard from the actual album and I was really stoked about getting this awesome new DT release, that is, until I found out what Octavarium actually sounds like.

its just james labries latest solo album, its old news
and its a crappy album, far too numetalish for my liking, but im kinda dissapointed with a few songs from octavarium, but the root of all evil, these walls, panic attack and octavarium are all really good, so they do the album justice

Can anyone tell me what they think of my review of ToT?
Dream Theater- Train of Thought.
-------
Dream Theater, whilst remaining first and foremost a very progressive band, released this album in October 2003. It is their heaviest work to date and is very guitar orientated. But Jordan Rudess's keyboard work on the album is awesome. While this is true, the real god on this album is John Petrucci. His guitar skills are reallty shown off on this album, every song has a blazing solo, which will disloacate even the most virtuositic of jaws. As I Am, the opener, is a brilliant opener to a brilliant album, with it's catchy chorus and rapped bridge, before Petrucci rips into a mind boggling solo. Before This Dying Soul's Machine Head style double bass intro, before the instrument section, which like every other on this album, will astonish you. Vacant is an affecting ballad in the style of such earlier Dream Theater songs as Wait for Sleep or Disappear. A quick warning to all guitarists. One listen to this album will make you realise what a clueless, fat-fingered dunce you really are. Sorry!
Cheers! :thumb:

Jordan Rudess - Secrets Of The Muse
Anyone have it? If you do, do you love it as much as me?
It's too good to be true.

I totally disagree. I never expected anything of this quality to come from James Labrie. I think it is much better than Octavarium (oh how I hate to say it) and I may even buy it.

I've always thought of him as DT's weakest link, musicianship wise. But this album holds itself really well. I bought it and I think it's really ****ing good.

are you talking about LaBrie?
I always have trouble to decide who's the weakest link in the band.
it might be LaBrie, but take in consideration:
LaBrie is the voice of Dream Theater, how annoying some people may think he is, he has been the voice for ten+ years.
( I know charli did vocals on the first album though)
2nd: LaBrie has some great talent, he has a great voice, and fits in with the band, such a progressive band needs a vocalsist who can be progressive in his vocalstyle and rgnge too, that LaBrie (although there are quite a few good prog vocalits)
the only thing that bothers me about LaBrie is
his breath control, sometimes his, how do I say that.....well the breath he takes just before he starts singing a line annoys me.
but than again, it is his trademark.
2nd: he submitts so little yo the band, he hardly writes any lyrics, and songwriting isn't his thing either.
but I love him just the same.

Don't get me wrong, I think he's an amazing singer and perfect for the band. But I just think that he gives the least to DT, in terms of songs and in terms of talent. Most of his vocal melodies are written for him. I love his vocal control in Part III of Change of Seasons "Carpe Diem" You know the "We can learn from the past. But those days are gone." That always gioves me chills. He has definately given alot to the band but I just think he's the weakest link in the band.

I think I agree with you, if only he wrote the lyrics, and made his own vocal lines.
I do think his voice on octovarium is the best since I&W :)
