Kickass album I know. That was actually my first Dream Theater album I got. I had heard "Home" from a cousin of mine who is still in my home province (I went there for the summer almost three years ago) and I just got addicted right away. Congradulations on the purchase just the same.

DT are a band that besides about 7 songs bore me to absolute death. They're awesome though, I just can't find myself listening that much. Portnoy is hardcore.

The Glass Prison is one of the greatest songs ever composed. I love the parts where it's awesome riffing and someone (I think it's Mike) going "hey, hey, hey".

In some respect I can understand that...

However, I personally think the riffage out of ToT more than makes up for Petrucci's constant shredding.

Besides, it's not like every solo on ToT is really that pointless, I mean...

The As I Am solo is really pretty cool sounding. The opening solo in This Dying Soul is as well...although the second solo isn't quite as good IMO...

The back and forth between Jordan and John in Endless Sacrifice is neat too, and the aforementioned SoC solo is really nice too. John doesn't solo in Honor Thy Father, which may come as a surprise to many...so if you don't like the solos there, blame Jordan not John :p

I never used to like the In The Name of God solo, because I thought it was pointless shred...and to some extent it still is, but it has grown on me a bit. If you get the Budokan DVD, they do an extended version of this song, with John doing a very melodic solo, closer to the style I think you'd like...

Ok fair enough if you like heavy music but there are certain things you come to expect from a band like Dream Theater. I really am put off from their last 2 albums because to me Dream Theater mean lush melodic guitar work and symphonic fiddly bits encapsulated in a unique world of infinite ideas. The new albums don't mean that to me but i suppose my memories are different to yours.

I dont want them to recreate 'images' but for them just to not feel the need to evolve for evolvings sake, y'understand?

Train of Thought was so far from 'nu metal' it wasn't funny.

Nu metal bands do not shift time signatures fifty million times like they do in "This Dying Soul". Nu metal bands do not have mind blowing solos, found on every song except "Vacant". Nu metal bands do not go from crushing riffage to great melodies like they do.

Anyone who seriously thinks ToT isn't still progressive metal should be shot.

You're an idiot.

Petrucci is one of a few guitarists who can actually use every single string on a 7 string guitar. Playing a 7 string guitar does not make you nu-metal

And he only used the 7 string on "This Dying Soul". All the rest of the songs were done on his 6

I considered. But really, DT in 1993-1999 was soooooo much better and more proggish than now. They're going for a much heavier image and they cant handle it. Ive said this before and Ill say it again. ProgMetal, or just Music in general is losing class. The Only great band I listen to founded in the New Mellenium, is Mars Volta. They have this style that suits their music. DT had a certain style that suited their music and Metallica had one too. But They all loose this style to the innevitable death of classy music. my point tonight is that style is important in music. It is the factor that decides what kind of music your band will produce.

Sorry The JoZ. For all my miss strikes with NU METAL. But I have to show people that music is slowly fading to crap. IMO.

The JoZ
04-12-2005, 03:21 PM
But they aren't any less prog than before. They are still making epic-length songs, still doing great solos, etc etc.

Again, just because it sounds different, doesn't make it something it's not.

Dream Theater has evolved as the times have changed. If they kept making the same music they made back in 1992, their fan base would be considerably smaller at this point in time.

Not only that, but it would be very boring. Change is a good thing, and I think It's retarded when a band changes their sound, and fans say something like "they're going nu metal now", or "they're selling out". Yes, sometimes they are selling out, but very rarely. Usually it's just people who can't deal with change.

Also, I don't see what's wrong with Petrucci using a 7 string. He's one of the few players who uses it as it should be used, not so you can get your guitars to go even lower. For example: Korn.

Yes, but, Why change so much into the part where you know its crap, but you're(reffering to DT) so cocky that you dont realise it. The last good album they made was Awake. from there and on. Uninspired prog Metal. They were so high up in the cloulds with their new Train of Thought album, they they didn't even realise that it sucked. They even cut their nice long metal hair to"stay with the times" but like Metallica, they made a mistake.Turning into something they're not. I know I know. They have to change to satisfy the fans. But I can tell you, no fan of Metal would like short hair and clean shaves with running shoes topped off by crap music that doesn't suit them.

Oh Come on, can you honestly say Scenes From a Memory was "unispired prog metal?" That album is pure brillance, has a great concept, and just overall very well done.

They were so high up in the cloulds with their new Train of Thought album, they they didn't even realise that it sucked. They even cut their nice long metal hair to"stay with the times" but like Metallica, they made a mistake.
They are noe middle aged men with kids. They can't stay young forever. Cutting your hair is not "staying with the times."

Turning into something they're not. I know I know. They have to change to satisfy the fans. But I can tell you, no fan of Metal would like short hair and clean shaves with running shoes topped off by crap music that doesn't suit them.
Change is not a bad thing. A band shouldn't feel they should keep an identity by staying with the same music for 20 years. I would rather a band change their style every two or so albums. It keeps it fresh, and iteresting. Honestly, I agree that The older Dream Theater was better, but saying they aren't who they are is stupid. People change, and bands change their music style.

How sad, I think this is simply a thing about image. From my understanding, you're not supposed to care about image.

Prince of Darkness
04-12-2005, 03:48 PM
Im back, just got the post. DT changed, yes. But I know I keep going back to the fashion in music, but it has an effect on how your music pops out. If you had short hair in the '80's '90's period, you would not have survived as a metal band. So everyone had their long hair and scruffy looks. Great. But obviously this has to change with time. So the image got tighter and more clean. Like John Petrucci. But you dont make your image cleaner and your music heavier.thats just wrong IMO.

I guess Im still stuck in the '70-early'90's style. cant blame me right?

RiceMonster
04-12-2005, 03:53 PM
You should be shot if you think image plays an important role in music. Music is something we hear, it is a sound. It has nothing to do with what we see. Yes Prince of Darkness, you are stuck in the 80's, and really you should move on. There are plenty of new good bands. It's just a matter of checking out the under ground.

Perhaps not, but still hair length/clothes/penis size doesn't determine how well you play your genre or what defines you.

Octavarium's artwork. Its not fake. Here's the proof:
Of course, as always, I was hesitant to post this - but I decided I'd rather *us* unveil it than some underground website from Greece or Poland (like how Train Of Thought was unveiled)

Let me just say you are only getting a taste of what the artwork and layout has in store for you.
I worked very closely for several weeks with the great Hugh Syme and think the end result of the packaging is the best we've had for any of our albums in the past.

I already see so many of you being critical, and that's to be expected, but you know the old cliched expression: "Don't judge a book by it's cover...."
(although in this case, I personally dig it....)

I'm downloading the cd now, i found all except one song, so far the only song i finished dowloading was "The Root of All Evil", i would describe it as Dream Theater doing thrash metal, sort of like old school metallica but heavier and with way better solos. The riffs themselves on this song aren't really technical at all, but the solos in it are pretty awesome as usual. Its heavier than anything they have ever done, heavier than TOT by far. Its good stuff.

I like Stream of Conscisousness. I especially like the breakdown at about 5:25 and then that same breakdown comes in again around 6:30. It's pwnage. I wish I had a 6-sting bass.

The Answer Lies Within (7:02) : I believe this song is written by Labrie and deals with his battle with his sexuality - "for days on end I sit and pray and hope to God that I'm not Gay"

Hi all. I'm a Dream Theater noob and I was wondering if you guys could help me out with something? I recently watched the Modern Drummer Festival 2003 DVD and Dream theater play an instrumental medley on it. Do you guys know what songs they play in it?

I'm not sure if this has already been asked, I checked the main site and it says new album is due 7th June, but what I want to know, have they released anything on like, how it will sound?
I really liked Train of Thought, and wondered if maybe they'll be doing another sort of heavy album?

So I'm reading the reviews for Images & Words on Amazon music (I'm thinking of buying it), there's alot of talk about Metropolis, Pt. 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper, and how Petrucci wrote it, here's a quote:

The subtle references Petrucci makes in the lyrics, such as: "Somewhere, like a scene from a memory," gives you an idea of what's to come.
So, is Petrucci doing vocals? :o
Because that would be kinda cool I reckon. (*Has no idea what Petrucci sounds like).

Edit: Another question, on Train of Thought, and I guess other CDs (I have been listenning to Train of Thought heaps lately, great album) who does backing vocals? Like in the song Honour Thy Father where James first starts singing there's an awesome almost-echo to his voice, I assume it's backing vocals? Who does them?

And is there a song where the bassist (John Myung?) sings?

No, he just wrote it. Like a small story, it is.

Actually on the Metropolis 2000 DVD with the band commentary track, he speaks quite a lot. Myung = Awesomeness. He explains a lot of the story of Metropolis Pt. II, while the other 4 goof off and talk about food and stuff.

He says these words -

'This is John Myung.'

'I think it was a hundred. That was it.'

'It wasn't working out.'

'You don't know? It's the Infinity symbol.'

'Ace Of Spades.'

And that's pretty much it. Maybe one or two more sentences but those are the ones I remember. And I've watched the DVD with the commentary at least 50 times.

Well, I dunno about the maiden one, but Master of Puppets :o
If you liked the original, everything about DT's version is amazing, especially their version of Orion, and in some songs I think Labrie does amazing vocals (But that works both ways, I don't like his voice in some songs).
Petrucci adds his own guitar work, I've only heard a Live cover (Dunno if they released a studio version?) and it was kinda bad quality, you can hear the guitar work, vocals and drums, fairly well, but the bass is drowned out, so I can't give a comment.

Dayum my bad. So I'm sure by now we're all die hard fans....how did everyone find about DT? I used to look up tabs on MX, and one day I stumbled across the forums. It was a "best guitarist" discussion, and the name John Petrucci kept coming up. Well damned if I had ever heard of him...so I did a little research and found his band Dream Theater. After reading reviews on several of their albums, I decided Images and Words was the place to start. From the second I threw it on, I was hooked. Each musician is now my favorite in his particular field (save for LaBrie, who every now and then just gets in the way IMO.) Since then, I have bought all of their albums minus FII and Awake, the Budokan DVD, and I have taken quite a liking to both LTE albums as well.

So what are your stories?

I could have sworn that was Myung giving the commentaries on the Metropolis Pt. II storyline, but maybe that was my ears deceiving me and it was really Portnoy or Petrucci.

1) Train of Thought was released 11-3-03, I believe.

2) I had seen CD reviews, but never really paid them any mind. I really decided to get into Dream Theater after hearing "As I Am" on the radio. Yes, the radio.

Joz I see you backin up ToT a lot. It seems like every third person just bashes it end to end, and I just wanna say I'm with you on that one. Its no less DT than any of their other albums, just because it has a little more edge to it. I've been watching you fight this one man battle, standing up for that album, and I second your motion.

I like ToT, the only song on it I don't like is Vacant, which imo is a strange filler track that does nothing other than introduce one of the main riffs for Stream of Conscisousness.

On another note, the drum solo in "Finally Free" is 'kin amazing.

this is what petrucci sounds like. recorded from the budokan documentary, the audio and video isn't synced for some reason but you can hear him at least. you can also hear him clearly on ACOS and other songs on the live scenes from NY dvd, although at times i'd rather you couldn't.
http://s35.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1M2POMF55Y0Q63A4ZOYCM2JR26

as for ToT, it's one of my favourite albums and it's just the band playing as fast and as loud as they can. no one ever complained that chopin or paginini or whoever else back then played too fast, musicians have always tried to push instruments to their limits in terms of speed, but when a guitarist does it suddenly everyone is appalled and disgusted. it does have some good solos and riffs, although they are pretty basic compared to stuff off I&W and the other earlier albums. i hope the new one has some good old ACOS style complex riffing.
vacant i also like, and i've always thought of it exactly as an introduction to stream of conciousness, sort of like a vocal section leading into the main song. and if it was a filler, i doubt they'd go to the trouble of bringing in a chello player to play it, they'd just get jordan to play it or do a comedy piano backing.

ToT is by far the best DT album
