the orchestra was acctually what disappointed me the most...don't get me wrong i thought it was fantastic but it was a little out of tune at times. especially in 6 degrees...and the pizzicato for vacant was not a tasteful choice.
still much better than metallica's S&M or something because they knew when to stay out and the orchestration was overall better. kudos for putting that all together in the amount of time they had

It's the tuning that bothers me most with the orchestra. And the fact that it's really string-dominated. IMO War Inside My Head NEEDED a powerful horn section, and it just wasn't there. The orchestra sounded aweful in that section actually.
Still an amazing performance as a whole. All the members of DT were spot on from what I've heard (only listened a couple times).

The only thing that bothers me about the dvd is not having 6 degrees split up in chapters. The reason why it bothers me is because my dvd player is my PS2, and anyone who uses the PS2 for dvds knows that the fast forward and rewind feature is SO SLOW. If I had a dvd player that had multiple fast forward speeds it wouldnt bother me. Thats my only gripe, and it only bothers me because the ps2 sucks for fast forwarding.:thumb:

yea that feature kinda stunk even though it's supposed to be one song.
classical symphonies are broken into different movements even though they're all considered to be part of the whole, and identified as the whole.
...nevermind.

I think complaining about SCORE is an example of being one of the 'Never Enough' people.
Cmon guys.. It's awesome enough to have DT play at Radio City and record another dvd so soon... but to do it with an Orchestra?? I think that deserves a little recognition. Sure, they were a bit out of tune at times, but as if that matters - the fact that they got an orchestra together and arranged music of such difficulty is mind-blowing enough!
For the record, DT only got to rehearse with the orchestra ONCE - and that was the DAY BEFORE the show. Also, they didn't have the idea to record a DVD or get an Orchestra until half way through the Octavarium tour.
Oh, and JP had a cold on the night of the performance and STILL played flawlessly. Give them some slack. They couldn't have done it any better.

images and words is my fav by them
does anyone have the train of thought live cd?
I think it's cool, although James holds back a bit too much with singing, maybe to safe his voice?

Yes, it really makes a big difference. I love all their DVD's, but I couldnt watch any of them in their entirety 10 times in one month. With Score I can do that, not becuase I like the song selection better than any other DVD, but because I love reliving the experience of my first concert.
Its like having sex for the first time and it being recorded for your viewing pleasures later on in life.

MP chose Vacant because he had to do a ToT song (if you hadn't noticed, they play a song from every album), and he'd stated that on this DVD he wanted to do as much material as he could which hadn't already been done on DVD. Every other song on ToT had been done at Budokan, except for Honor Thy Father, but he probably realised it would be far too hard to orchestra something that heavy. But yeah... They also needed a bit of a break after the awesomeness that is 6DOIT.

6DOIT is the perfect album to start imo.
you've got real heavy like the glass prison, beautiful ballad like disappear, and a little bit more proggier side like the great debate.
Inkstar
09-21-2006, 11:13 PM
Octavarium is the best album to start with, I would say. It displays everything they stand for. Rocky heavy songs like TROAE and Never Enough, then ballads like TALW, simple songs like IWBY, a perfect mix of prog and metal with Sacrificed Sons, and ultimate prog epics with 8VM. Really can't go wrong.

So I listened to Awake for the first time in like half a year, and I actually liked most of it quite a bit. Namely, 6:00, The Mirror, Caught in a Web, and that's probably it.
Toaster

I don't like LaBrie's vocals on that album, but that's pretty much the only thing I don't like about it. It's a great album.
Dr. Jake Destructo
10-01-2006, 10:24 PM
You know what, I kind of gave up on Dream Theater after listening to Awake because Labrie annoys me; after listening to Ayreon's "The Human Equation," I appreciated Labrie's vocals a lot more, so maybe I ought to check out some more Dream Theater, especially if Awake is weak on Labrie's part.
Toaster

That's a really poor performance from him. He's off-key a lot of the time, and he does this raspy type thing which sounds horrible. He sounds really good on Metropolis and Images and Words.
Damn, I still have to check out Ayreon!

The Human Equation is the definition of modern prog. It's ridiculously ecclectic in terms of the genres it takes from. And oh man, those keyboards are INTENSE.
I still didn't like LaBrie's voice all that much though. I just like it because it piles on some of my favorite singers to stand in for certain characters and stuff.

10-02-2006, 09:26 AM
LaBrie's vocals were pretty good on Awake, especially for a darker album and when his voice was more of a raspy shriek than his more melodious singing nowadays. He tends to scream out higher verses back then

Can't get enough of SCORE, personally. Such a brilliant concert.

LTE is absolutely brilliant. Love it. For those not in the know, the reason LTE no longer write is because they are 3/4 DT members, so there'd really be no point. (Rudess was in LTE before he got invited to DT).
OSI is an interesting one. It's certainly very different, but I really like it. Very strange approach, but has a great result.
JLB's Elements of Persuasion is great! I love it. Like many others, it was wrongly labelled when I coughdownloadedcough it, so I first thought it was Octavarium. Heh.

What's Dream Theater's tuning?
I tuned to CFBEGC but the song Honor Thy Father didn't sound right. Then I tuned to C F Bb Eb G C but it still wasn't right. The first couple riffs were fine but the chord at 00:24 didn't sound anything like in the song. Is my tuning wrong or do I have a bad tab?
The tab I'm using says to do it:
|-------------|-------------|---------|
|-------------|-------------|---------|
|-------------|-------------|-9-9-9---|
|-------------|-------------|-7-7-7---|
|-2---2---2---|-2---2---2---|-5-5-5---|

If you've ever seen DT's video of Master of Puppets, he does the best grin, right as the shred solo starts, he's just grinning and spinning around on his whacky wheelboard, it's good.
Man I'll have to see that.
Sounds hilarious

well i guess that depends on your definition of "good songwriting."
i tend to like that almost disjunct songwriting style, where nothing's restricted and each song is just a huge amalgam of everyone's ideas, which is basically what dt does.
just a personal preference.

Oh, I understand, when DT write good songs, they write really good songs. But sometimes they're just being technical for the sake of being technical, and then other times they're not necessarily being technical-they just write bad songs. This Dying Soul is something that comes to mind with the technicality problem. I love the song, but I'll take Hysteria or Knights of Cydonia over it any day. However, on the other hand, any song from the first disc of 6DOIT? Then it becomes a little tougher to play favorites.

Oh, it's epic.
Rigth when it comes up to him in the shred solo (He takes over mid way), he does the coolest metal keyboardist stance, left leg back, right leg forward, hunched over, going to crazy speeds. Oh man, just thinking about it gets me hot :o
Edit: Still haven't got the real Train of Thought yet, but I want it.
