I really didn't like Score's setlist when I first read what is was. It was the same thing with some songs in Budokan, but when I saw the songs perfomed live in the dvd, I started liking them a lot. It was the exact same thing with Score. The songs grew on me quickly.

and the first time I listened to it, it was on my old *** tv with one of its built in speakers broken. I could only hear the right channel so Petrucci's guitar was barely audible, especially during his solos. Even so, I still enjoyed the performance. I listened to a few minutes of the dvd on my living room's tv after, and it sounded perfect. I'm gonna buy a dvd drive for my computer tommorrow so I could listen to with my good speakers.

I'm such a dickwit, I just realised that Score is called that because a score is 20, and it's their 20th anniversary show. :(

And the musical score part, obviously.

8 songs in the first part of the setlist, 5 in the second, with the orchestra.

8 parts of six degrees are played, then 5 more songs afterwards

5 of the 8 songs of 8v are on the setlist

yeah i know, like theres this huge story behind the artwork in ocavarium and in the title track theres lots of themes from the rest of the album...how long that must have taken to write makes me dizzy

Inkstar
09-01-2006, 10:35 PM
nope...that's a big problem w/ score. six degrees is listed as one song, all 40 minutes of it :(

It's not a problem at all. DT always intended it to be one full 40 minute track, but unfortunately they had to split for the album. I think it's great that they didn't split for SCORE because that's how it was intentionally written, and how it should be.

yeah and the morse code says "eat my *** and balls" its mike portnoys motto
in the part of octavarium where james screams you can hear mike say "root, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, octo" and during each number the track that corresponds with that number(root=the root of all eveil, so on) is played in the background

We could go way way into all the intricacies of 8vm, the song and the album. But as far as Score goes, wow! Phenomenal show. I think the setlist is definitly a better representation of Dream Theater over all as opposed to Live at Budokan. Budokan was a shredfest. This is a prog-fest. I know almost everyone was dissappointed (as was I) when the ToT song for the show was "Vacant" but it was done to best match the orchestra to DT's sound. Honestly, do you think a 35+ piece orchestra could have worked on "This Dying Soul"? All the players perfrom amazingly. LaBrie definitly stands out for the night, his vocals were nothing short of stellar the entire show. Portnoy (probably with the curfew in mind) rushed A LOT, many parts of Six Degres, Sacrificed Sons, 8vm and even Metropolis lost their groove. You can see Petrucci turning around and giving Mike a look like "come on man, chill!" but oh well. They all did amazing and we're lucky to have such a great dvd on our hands. To those who were there, I envy you! how will/can they top it?

My mislabled 'This Dying Soul' is called God's Funeral, by Superior. Dunno what my mislabled As I Am is (It has similar lyrics to DT's, so tracking it down is ****ing hard...).
Even though they are mislabled, they're pretty cool songs, they all have a taste of progressive metal, I can easily see why I got them mixed up with Dream Theater songs :p

I thought Rudess's strings/continuum intro was a little long but still interesting, if we wouldn't have done the random noise/both fingers just sliding down the whole keyboard bit I would have loved it all. Rudess is ACE but when he gets wanky I immediately lose interest. Ghettoeddo, I turned 18 yesterday (sept 2) way to go!!! (I'm gona be a senior in HS though). I can only imagine how emotional it was to see "Sacrificed Sons" in NY, it was really moving for me to see it played with the footage in Minnesota...

AND YES, Score is worth getting and better than Budokan if you're a DT fan, if you're a shred/metal head and like DT just for JP's ripping, you probably would just enjoy watching Budokan on repeat.

I have listened through Octavarium many times, and I cannot stand I Walk Beside You. The pre-chorus sounds awesome, but the chorus ruins the whole song for me. It sounds so U2 and I absolutely cannot stand that group.

But I digress. Being at that show was amazing.:thumb:

And with the guitar, do you mean the Ernie Ball? Technically you CAN get a floyd rose, but it will require a fair amount of work. If I recall, the Petrucci sig has a standard style tremelo rather than a floating tremelo. His old Ibanez sig models had Floyds/Edges but his Ernie Balls have a special standard one. This means you'll prob have to get some new drilling, cutting for the floyd to even fit in the cavity and the locking nut as well as springs I believe.

eug: I think his Music Man is superior. Have you played both and know from experience or just going off what you've seen/heard him play? Because I definetly love older JP tone better (circa Once in a Livetime) but I think the actual MMJP guitar is superior.

Lionsheart: I used to be right with you on dispising I Walk Beside You (the key change made me cringe horribly) but now I've come to terms with it. The song as a whole is so cool I'm willing to ignore a few shortcomings.

ghettoeddo: I'd stick with the bridge you've got in your MMJP, MM doesn't make any other bridge like that and IMO it's phenomenal. If you really really want a FR, as long as you had a good luthier drill/install/set it up for you you should be good and probably only lose the tiniest tiniest bit of sustain (most of it happens right behind your bridge)

and to the rest of you just getting SCORE....what's the deal? Just slow to get it or do you live in the boondocks? Pre-ordering is definetly foolish, it almost always comes late.... I walked into Best Buy around 10:30 on tuesday and got my dvd...for 14.99 :D

Yeah me too. I want to see how big his house is and what car he drives. I dont know if you remember but like a week or two after the April 1st show, my friend was working at his job, DSW. A woman came and he noticed her name was Rena Petrucci. He noticed the last name and jokingly said "I bet you know who Dream Theater is" and she said "Yeah John is my husband, hes next door buying catfood."

So anyway, like a few days ago, my friend said that you can go into the DSW database and find the adress to anyone who used their credit card. Its used for sending out ads and stuff. I dont have it right this instant, but if my friend is on register tonight, I'll most likely have it by the time he gets off work.:thumb:

Anyone but me really disappointed with the orchestra on Score?

Nup. They were pretty much at the right leve, if only a little too quiet in Octavarium, but it was great. They were just meant to be there for the background, not as loud as the other instruments.

But I don't think it's good to be disappointed. MP only had the idea to play with an orchestra half way through the Octavarium tour, so they had to get it all written and arranged in such a short amount of time, and it's very complex music AND DT only rehersed with the orchestra once, which was the day before the show.

imo they did the best they could. Brilliant show.

Yeah, I hated the orchestra on S&M because they completley overwhelmed the guitars, the volume on Score was maybe a little low but still good.

is the d sonic really stock on all his new guitars? I know he likes it because of the ToT/8vm downtuned stuff but i thought i was just using it in some of his guitars that the downtuned, not in all his models. Oh well. As far as a new model, I'm sure Rainmaker is pretty spot on. JP has said repeatedly that his model/body style is absolutly perfect for him, in his mind it's the best possible guitar on the planet. I bet we just see a couple add-ons, some flame/quilt finishes (drools) and possibly covered pickups as seen on Score.

yea, the d-sonic and the compensated nut are going to be standard on all orders taken from april 2006, or should i say since apr 06, but still.

like i said, if its just the laminated top, im ok with that, and i dont like the idea/look of covered pups on this guitar that much anyway, wouldnt go well with the mystic dream!

i think the pickups on the pre-dsonic model, are custom dimarzios based on the steve's special (i think, not sre on that one) for the bridge, and the air norton for the neck.

but whatever options are on it, it is one AMAZING guitar!

None of the EBMM Petrucci models have a Floyd Rose. He worked with Music Man and they designed a tremolo specifically for the way he plays. The result is a trem that stays in tune through dive bombs and flutters almost as well as a Floyd, without the hassles.

There are some videos on youtube I think that show Petrucci working with Music Man designing the guitar.

Any album reccomendations?

I have Train Of Thought and Octavarium.

Train Of Thought is my favorite for the harder stuff, but Octavarium has some awesome songs.
Yeah definitely Awake, also get Images & Words and Scenes From A Memory.

I also remember watching the movie Rockstar and seeing that transexual lady wearing exactly the same jacket when she meets Mark Wahlberg at the airport

Sanity at Sydney Airport.

I dislike the following:
* Lyrics that try to sound deep but fail dismally.
* Vocals that lack emotion.
* Very generic drumming.
* A general lack of exciting atmosphere throughout the CD.

I like the following:
* The soprano sax solo in Another Day.

Check out Images & Words. Some great stuff on there. Also, 'Take Away My Pain' is about the death of JP's father, so if you want an emotional level that one's a great song. Very nice to listen to. :)

forgive me but I don't even know who Mastodon are

But I do know that DT kicks their *** anyway, whoever they are, because DT can act mature.

I actually think a lot of DT songs are quite coherent. The problem is there aren't enough of them to make an album coherent usually (barring SFAM and I&W imo).

That's why I think most stuff they release is just hard to get into; the songs sometimes don't make any sense.

Singing is a good thing in metal, but LaBrie can be iffy live...so I don't know where Mastodon get their opera comment from, because LaBrie is no Turunen... by any means.
