I'd imagine the only reason there was a bassist was because the glocks didn't have enough range to hit those notes...

Or maybe because I've heard bass is considered a percussion instrument?

If they didn't have a bassist, it would sound empty and it would be kind of hard to play that bass solo on a glock :p

that and my DT tastes are more for their energetic songs and a couple ballads (ex. Take the Time, The Mirror, Lie, About to Crash (reprise), and Metropolis)

If you are referring to the Death on the Road DVD, it's an unfortunate and little known fact that Bruce was suffering from quite severe flu on the night it was filmed in Dortmund. His vocals aren't perfect on that live album, it's true, however, when I saw them on that tour, Bruce was excellent, and the same goes for the last tour, when I saw them at Leeds Festival, he dealt with the higher songs such as Where eagles dare just as well as he did when he was 25.
If you're referring to Rock in Rio...I can't work out how you came to that conclusion, listen to the end of Hallowed be thy name, he holds that note for almost a full minute.
You also have to take into account that he's approaching 50 years of age. Most vocalists lose a little bit of their edge when they approach that kind of age, and sadly he is no exception, however, he's still pretty much note-prefect when I have seen the band, and on all recent Maiden and solo work.

now i disagree. Akerfeldt is not overrated at all, he posses both an excellent growling voice and a great clean voice (+plays guitar at the same time, unlike dickinson). he doesn't lose any power live either, from the DVD i have and a mate whos seen them. only in the Opeth thread have i seen people saying things about him which could be seen as overrated but thats expected.

i still don't know why this is being discussed here though.

Sometimes I love JL's vocals and sometimes I hate them. Most of Octavarium I love vocalwise. The other albums aren't as solid on his part for me. It's not that he does a bad job on those albums, just kind of annoying.

Akerfeldt is overrated as a vocalist, however he's underrated as a guitarplayer. He's also a better vocalist than guitar player too.

Russel Allen> Dickinson > Akerfeldt = Labrie

Labrie has Akerfeldt beat technically but he's annoying alot of the time.

LaBrie probably wasnt solid because his voice hasn't been in top shape since 1994 when he caught food poisoning which damanged his throat.

Food Poisoning? I heard he got... vocal rupture.. or something? I really know nothing about it. Maybe the food poisoning triggered the rupture. Anywho, I heard he had that rupture from Falling into Infinity, up to ToT, but he returned to normal with 8vm.

Speaking of skolnick, does anyone have Transformation? and if so...can i have it?

But yeah to be honest i think JP sounds better inside dream theater than he does on his solo product...the reason i think this is because JP's stuff is a little to reminiscent of satch and by this i mean like constant soloing over a riff or two. The reason i like the majority of vai's stuff better is because it seems like the rest of the instruments are actually there to contribute to the song rather than just provide backing for someone to solo over, if you catch my drift.

I also feel that vai is just more inventive and his works with vocals are great as opposed to petrucci and satch who (as far as i know) havn't used vocals.

Inkstar
08-15-2006, 04:43 AM
Yeah JP does sound better in DT than solo, but that's because there's 3 (sometimes 4) other people bouncing ideas off each other. So they might write a riff, then Portnoy might say "oh what if you did it this way..." or whatever. On his solo project JP didn't have that much 'freedom'.

Thats true, although i think the problem may of been that on his solo project he had too much freedom, seen as it was HIS project people probably didn't criticise him that much which then leads to a lack of developement of ideas.

But when you put so many great musicians together eg dream theater...the ideas are bound to progress and become better like what you said.

I don't get the big deal with I&W. I'd take 6DOIT, SFAM, and even 8v over it any day.

The first time i ever heard DT was when someone had it on their mp3 player years back and i took a quick listen, it just so happened to be on the kickass solo near the middle of erotomania. I forgot about the band for a long time then decided to listen to them one day and downloaded Dont look past me and i absolutely loved it, but for a long time i was convinced it was the glass prison because thats what the file was labeled as.
