Well, Dream Theater say on their site, I believe, that Metallica was one of their major influences.
If not the band as a whole, I'm sure Portnoy and Petrucci both say it.

OK...really newbie Dream Theater question coming right up, but I've got A Change Of Seasons, The Glass Prison, a live version of Beyond This Life, Voices, Caught In A Web and Erotomania on my computer, and I like all of them, and absolutely love the first two. Basically, which album would you guys recommend for me to buy, as I've been listening to them more and more recently. If this question's asked loads in here, then apologies.
Awake would a good place to start, or 6 degrees of inner turbulence (its cost more $ since its 2cd). BTW, you started with great songs :thumb:

Caught in a Web, Voices, and Erotomania are all on "Awake", plus the stellar songs The Mirror/Lie, Scarred, etc.

Get "Awake" then "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence", and if you like those two, "Train of Thought" after that.

I totally didnt gell with TOT. i thought the production of it was horrible...TOO LOUD ALL THE TIME. No dynamics. I think TOT was their attempt to get more of the traditional metal head into the audience. It worked too...when I went to see them on the TOT tour it was like OK all the really young 3 chord playing headbangers are here and it made for an annoying night. All the previous shows I went to the audience was full of musicians who stood and watched them play. I dont need to be pushed around by moshers or hit in the face with someones hair. I wont go see them if their next album is like TOT.

I agree with you about ToT, but part of the fun of going to a concert is to get into the music. The album was substandard but it had its good headbanging moments, and if you're near a "mosh pit" just move away. And don't diss the headbangers by assuming they can only play three chords. Good thing they're listening to bands as good as Dream Theater, so that they can learn to play something else, right? Come on, guy. Don't be such a purist. Dream Theater aren't exactly selling out on us (not like they could since LaBrie is still the singer).

I like them all. If you like a more documentary feel to your DVD, go with the Images and Words/5 Years to a lifetime. If you want great live shows, go with the Scenes from NY or Live at Budokan. I prefer Budokan because I liked the songs off of ToT they had on there, but Scenes was just as good. Its a win/win, IMO. Pick one up and you'll be happy regardless.

I dont like the newer DT Material, like TOT, The Last good cd by DT was 6DOIT but that was only OK, SFAM was a bit gay.Concept Albums and DT go together like bread and paper, not at all. My all time fav is IAW, I havn't heard the first one WDADU, is it any good?

do you mean DT isn't selling out Bacause LaBrie has an unusual voice?
it's not just LaBrie, it's the entire band.
they just changed their sound to a bit more metal-ish.
as long as they play long songs, with incredible riffing, solo's and awesome drumming, bass playing, and awesome keyboard parts, they're not selling out.

it's more, that I'm glad they're 'progressing' , something a lot of Prog bands do not, if they would stick with the same sound, ever since WDADU, it wouldn't be the same.

Prince of Darkness

Dream Theater has the most talented musicians in there, and they are very lucky, and I consider them a supergroup. They have the best Guitarist, the best Bassist the best drummer and an unbelievable keyboardest. But this leaves on guy out. LaBrie.I actually like LaBrie, but when I introduce DT to my friends, they're all put off by LaBrie.
He is a weak link in DT, but what would DT be without Him?

Petrucci is unbelievable, but his songwrighting pisses me off lataly. The new stuff tried to be too different to the previous stuff. I admire their progressive abbilities, but they took it too far. This can be a problem for DT, 'cause I know people that lost a lot of intrest in DT after TOT. Im with them. The New album is gonna the same as TOT. Heavier. But thats not what DT was about in the beginning. They were about great riffs, Keyboarding, Melody changes and Vocalistic Genius. Not any more.

the2stranger
03-13-2005, 08:38 AM
I don't consider LaBrie the weakest link.
but his voice is an aquirred taste.
he's a trained Opera singer. so his skill is extreme.
I alwys have a very hard time, when it comes to, 'who's the weakest link in DT'
they're all so amazing at what they do.

arguably it is LaBrie, beacause he doesn't deliver much lyrics, and doesn't work on the music.
but, meh this isn't going anywhere, I love them too much :p

No, the new album ISN'T like TOT. MP, JLB and JR have stated this many times.

And both SDOIT AND TOT have those great riffs, keyboarding, melody changes AND incredible vocals. Ever heard Endless Sacrifice? The Test That Stumped Them All?

I'm really looking forward to the new album. It'll be interesting to see where they can go after three incredibly experimental albums. I'm sure I'll enjoy it, as long as it still sounds like DT.

Images & Words will probably be the most replies you get considering you saw them supporting Yes.

Then again I don't know what you saw them play, and I think Train of Thought was out then so I guess you were subjected to a wide range of their music.

Try Images & Words though first, great album.

i just started listening to dream theater, and i love what i am hearing. im a drummer and ive always admired mike portnoy. hes like a heavier version of neil peart which is awesome. i also play bass and i think john myung is amazing too. anyways, i dont know much about them, but i want to buy a cd, and i dont know which one to buy. i dont want to just guess and end up getting a ****ty cd (just like someone getting into metallica and getting load instead of master of puppets). i want to buy there best cd, so any one who could tell me what that is would be awesome. i like heavier music, but not like death metal. iron maiden and tallica are basically as heavy as i go. but if there is any cds they have made that sound like those 2 bands, it would be great if you told me so i could purchase it.

If I&W was produced, like, now...I might like it a little more. The overal production of it is part of why I don't like it as much. But just in general, they don't have anything that is that heavy on that album, therefore, I don't like it as much.

That being said, I'd like to see their next album be closer to Awake or Train of Thought than anything else. We'll see what happens, I suppose.

His singing on more recent albums has taken a more modern, contempory style, with LaBrie rapping and even doing some aggressive singing( He screams under one of the parts in In the Name of God.). I think his singing is one of the best thing about Dream Theater's earlier work, but sometimes I do feel really sorry for him in his part time job. Hehe

I noticed that Charlie Dominici sounds remarkably like Geddy lee on WdaDU. I'm a big fan of their newer stuff but I way prefer LaBrie's vocals on earlier albums, Change of Seasons, Metropolis or All of Scenes from a Memory being his high points vocally in my opinion.

I still don't think that I&W is that good...

That "Hold it up now, wait a minute" is sampled isn't it?
I prefer the range JLB desplays on ToT and SDoIT to any other album, but my favourite vocals are on The Spirit Carries On.
Also, I'm not sure that Myung doesn't talk because he's bullied, I just get the impression that he's kinda shy and doesn't like to. If anybody'd be bullied in that band it'd be JLB.

IvortheEngineDriver
03-16-2005, 01:58 AM
I dunno...Labrie's vocal range impresses me on a lot of their albums.
On IaW...that part in Learning to Live when he just does the "whoas" from low (high to everyone else) to really high
on Awake...the way he sings on The Mirror/Lie
and ToT, with In the Name of God, this one part, he follows the guitars/keyboards perfectly, its really good.

About JLB being bullied, you can tell on the Budokan DVD you are right, when they are doing the Iron Maiden album and they are talking and they are like "Yeah, we got the copy, you need to go listen to it" when James wasn't gettin' it...I thought it was pretty funny.

BTW, I was watching the 5 Years in a Lifetime DVD and "Close my Eyes" is like, an amazing song. Anyone know where I can get it? I haven't actively looked, but is it a cover?

Live At Budokan. So much chunkiness, but tonnes of clarity. Thinking of This Dying Soul's breakdown here, with the 'TGP' riff. So much better utilised in TDS, even though its a reprise.

as far as what I own..first..and whatnot
first was Images & Words, followed by Budokan, Live Scenes, then Scenes from a Memory, Awake, Train of Thought, then 6 Degree's

favorite to listen to..Scenes, hasta be Scenes

meh, it's good though
favorite songs..

In The Name of God
Home(which, I'm proud that I can play, fun stuff)
Metropolis(5 minutes of that)
aand Stream of Consciousness

What do you mean a 'toneless' album?

I meant there was little organic feel to the guitar sounds: just gobs and gobs and gobs of gain. Not like a lot of the tones of 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence, which seemed equally heavy but much tighter-sounding.

He was fired because the band wanted Jordan Rudess for a long time, and had finally become available.

That doesn't mean he may not have partaken in being a rock star too much, but the primary reason was because they could finally add Jordan to their line up.

Like one time, I saw a Whitesnake video from when Steve Vai was in the band, and he did this unbelievable trick where he flipped the guitar onto his knee flat, and put both hands on the neck like you would play a piano and did this unbelievable trick descending tapping lick. Petrucci just stands there concentrating. I would love to see him go nuts more.

Yes, I agree, a combo of ToT's heaviness with 6 Degrees' harmonic sophistication and arrangements would be utterly killer. Rudess should take a tack from Nightwish with his keyboard work: that band always has amazing metal riffs and great keyboard lines. I love the sound of an orchestra backing up a metal band.

Good God, I hope he loses those. His soloing tone on ToT stunk too: you really need delay or reverb for those kinds of things, so that the picking noise and the gain isn't so harsh-sounding. One thing I would also hope to see less of are keyboard/guitar unison "races:" the ones on ToT seemed rarely supported by any sort of audible bassline or chord changes, and so it sounded very strange and silly in parts.

MAthiAS
03-20-2005, 02:10 PM

His tone's okay, but he wanks it on almost every song of ToT. Especially Stream of Consciousness, I love that song, but his solo is pretty boring to me. Lets see some Pull Me Under/Another Day style solos... you know, with phrasing.

Precisely. Although as I said in my edit, I would like to see reverb on the solos. They sound less harsh and more wailing that way. For instance, I think the "Blind Faith" solo was great with the delay on it. Also, as I said in the edit, less keyboard/guitar unison races, unless they're going to have some actual musical theme to them. I don't get impressed by those very much anymore. Listening to bands like Nightwish just reinforce my belief in orchestration, rather than a billion instruments all locking in step together and doing the exact same thing. 6 Degrees had a lot of layers, for instance.

MAthiAS
03-20-2005, 02:16 PM

I agree with you...I love ToT, it was my first DT album and still listen to it (actually taking a break from it right now, kinda od'ed), I've been listening to IaW and Awake a lot lately and really have fallen in love with both of them. I really hope, when they come to the MidWest in July/August, they play some of those tunes. But JP does get into it on the Budokan DVD (See the Glass Prison riff on This Dying Soul...which is my favorite part of the song). I'm just glad he got rid of that UGLY looking Piccasso guitar he used, I thought that looked real cheesy. I finally got 6DotIT, and I love it. I've heard the Glass Prison before I got it, and its always been one of my favorite DT songs. The rest of the first album is absolutely amazing though. Misunderstood is probably my favorite slower song by them now, maybe my favorite slower song ever. I love the "From a God to a God save me" line. I haven't listened to the whole 2nd CD yet, but I will later.

By the way, does anyone know anywhere I can get info on the new album?

Yes, found it on Limewire. Its at BB King's in NYC. And he really does slightly fudge the first two arpeggios. Not really a mess up, just not 100% clean.

Right, i want to make a Dream Theater compilation for my bf and myself, and i wondered which songs i should put on it, i am finding trouble because all of them are so good, and i can't put them ALL on, but it would be nice, but not possible somehow.

Please give me your views on likely songs.

Cheers then.

I don't really get it. DT are something I usually love. A mix of artiness, 70's psychedelia and heavy metal, it seems like they'd be my favourite band. But alas... they just don't click with me. I have a few albums (ok, 7) burnt, and I love the song Pull Me Under. I love Portnoy's robotic drumming, and Petrucci's mad fast playing, but especially on the heavy stuff I fricking hate the vocals. The singer ruins As I Am (but I love the eargasmic drum solo).

Wait a second... this Overture 1928 song is pretty shnazzy.

Anyway yes, they are very cool in places but yeah... just... I don't know what doesn't keep me coming back. Maybe it's Tool syndrome (they take ages to grow).

I guess my question is, did Dream Theater take ages to grow on anyone here?

i need some help. People say that 6 degrees of inner turbulence last for 42 minutes and i also thought that, but i just bought the cd and i noticed that the 42 minutes is the duration of the six degrees (that are separated songs i think). So whyy people says that it lasts 42 minutes if there is no 6 degrees of inner turbulence song. Or the six songs count as one whole song.

I've never got the fuss about TGP. I don't think it flows that well, I think the 'Run, fast, from the wreckage...' section is WAY too drawn out and feel the solo section is actually pretty boring. And the 1-0-0-0 breakdown riff was utilised WAY better in This Dying Soul. Meh, to each their own I guess.

Then why did you say you never got the fuss about it if it's your favorite song?

You know that the singing in that part alternates between James, John Petrucci and Mike, right?

Mike: Run!
James: Fast, through the wreckage of the past, a shattered glass prison wall behind me
John: Fight!
James Past, walking through the ash, a distant oasis before me

Mike: Crawling!
James: Desparate, crawling on my knees, begging God to please stop the insanity
John: Help me
James: I'm trying to believe, stop wallowing in my self pity...We've been waiting for you my friend, etc...

James + Mike Helllp me....Save mee....

Mike: Enter the door!
James: Desparate!
John: Fighting no more!
James: Help me restore!
Mike: To my sanity!
James: At this temple of hope!
Mike: I need to learn!
James: Teach me how
John: Sorrow to burn
James: Help me return
Mike: To humanity
James: I've been fearless and thorough on the way to this temple of hope!

James: Believe!
Mike: Transcend the pain
James: Living the lie
John: Humility
James: Open my eyes!
Mike: To this new oddessy
James: Of rigorous honesty
Mike: Serenity
James: That I never knew
John: Soundness of mind
James: Help me to find
Mike: The courage to change...all the things that I can

DAVE MUSTAINE'S 'GIGANTOUR' SET TO LAUNCH IN LATE JULY;
DREAM THEATER, FEAR FACTORY, DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN AND NEVERMORE
CONFIRMED TO JOIN MEGADETH ON THE MAINSTAGE
FOR SIX-WEEK NORTH AMERICAN TREK

It's called GIGANTOUR, and it's the brainchild of MEGADETH frontman/guitarist DAVE MUSTAINE.

Set to launch in late July, GIGANTOUR is a six-week festival trek co-headlined by MEGADETH and DREAM THEATER, who'll be accompanied by other mainstage acts Fear Factory, Dillinger Escape Plan and Nevermore. Artists for the second stage will be announced in the coming weeks.

GIGANTOUR follows MEGADETH’s sold-out 2004 “Blackmail The Universe” Tour in support of 2004’s THE SYSTEM HAS FAILED--MEGADETH’s tenth studio album--which debuted on the charts at #18 and was critically hailed as a brilliant return to form. Bandmates Glen Drover (guitar), James MacDonough (bass) and Shawn Drover (drums) will once again join MUSTAINE on the road.

GIGANTOUR--whose moniker was inspired by the classic 1960’s cartoon “Gigantor”--will criss-cross North America, with stops in amphitheatres and arenas in cities including Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Detroit, Toronto, Montreal, Washington, Philadelphia, Boston, Denver and Minneapolis, among others. The tour is implementing the “fan friendly” ticket price of approximately $35 each. MUSTAINE notes: “I think people may want an affordable alternative to the choices out there--along the lines of a pure music festival--like Monsters of Rock or Clash of the Titans.”

MUSTAINE handpicked the bands for GIGANTOUR, with a focus on musicianship. “There are few very successful tours out each summer and in order to be significant, I knew the first Gigantour had to make an impact with top bands like DREAM THEATER, Fear Factory, Dillinger Escape Plan and Nevermore.” MUSTAINE wanted to “put together a festival that consisted of positive bands that play heavy music in a high energy environment.”

MUSTAINE comments on the other bands he’s chosen for the GIGANTOUR mainstage. “I think that the variety of playing styles and the credibility of the different players is really exciting. I’m looking forward to spending time with DREAM THEATER--including my friend Mike Portnoy--while on the road. I think DREAM THEATER is unbelievably talented. I can’t wait to see what their set list is going to be for this festival.”

Mike Portnoy from DREAM THEATER comments on the band’s perspective on the tour. “I think we probably bring some diversity to the bill, because we’re kind of like chameleons--we can fit into a lot of different situations. We’ve done shows in the past with Iron Maiden, Slayer and Pantera, and then we’ve also done shows with Elton John, Yes and Deep Purple. I think our fan base is very diverse like that too.” Portnoy sees GIGANTOUR as a “kind of a meeting of musicians and metal-heads.” He adds: “I’ve been listening to MEGADETH since day one and always admired them and Dave as an artist--he’s constantly stuck to his guns and stuck by the music he believes in. MEGADETH are one of the pioneers of the genre.” GIGANTOUR marks the first U.S. leg of DREAM THEATER dates in support of their forthcoming release OCTAVARIUM, due out June 7 on Atlantic Records.

MUSTAINE first toured with Fear Factory in 1994. “I think Fear Factory and Dillinger Escape Plan are really going to add something different to the tour and bring some new people in.” He continues, “The frontman of Nevermore [Warrell Dane] used to be in a band called Sanctuary and I produced their first record.”

MUSTAINE is excited to hit the road and has a positive outlook for GIGANTOUR. “I look forward to watching this develop over the years and seeing how we can turn this into something that’s going to stand the test of time. And if this works, and it really works, maybe we’ll take it elsewhere.”

Stay tuned for tour dates, venues and information about the second stage bands to be announced soon.

This would be an absolute dream for me to go to. However, noen of my friends are metalheads so even if the tour stops near here, I doubt I'll go. :(

ow ok, well, in the 80/90's they we're ok, but still lookes gay.
now is surely is a big no no, iuw, I respect MP, but not that thing he's wearing, and he has gained some weight compared to the old days, that doesn't make it look any nicer either.

for very wrong DT clothing, watch the 'another day'video.

Mike wears the leotard rhingy there, and has his huge 'fro hairdo.

and the rest looks pretty dumb too, esp. LaBrie.
meh, but it was 'fashion' those days.

The Gigantour will pwn. I'm pumped for DT and Megadeth of course, Nevermore is great too. I've never listened to DEP, but I hear they're great. No Anthrax or Testament, but hey, its still an awesome tour.
