I have two massive pairs, some phillips ones i robbed on my last day of school and some huge sony ones that my mums ex lent me then never asked for them back...Dream Theater sound awesome on both.

The drumming on 'lines in the sand' sounds so beautiful through my phillips ones

The opening of it just seems similar, i think its something to do with the effect. and then torwards the middle when the clean kind of acousticy sound comes in...its also quite like the chorus of hurt.
The similarity is less so on the Budokan dvd though, as petrucci plays the opening as opposed to rudess which doesn't really sound as good.
Yeah, this is a very good effect. The Birdsong at the start is wonderful.

This dying soul has soul indeed, and not just in the title.

Yeah, i like the way DT dont go too overboard on the sampling but when they do it sounds awesome...i like the deer hunter samples in 'dont look past me' and the sample torwards the middle that kinda carries on the line that LaBrie is singing.

He says...'i feel bad about this'... etc

I just checked my I&W booklet and noticed that Kevmo wrote the lyrics for Surrounded...he did something good other than SDV after all then...

/Prays they play Surrounded next tour.

ghettoeddo

kev wrote a lot of good lyrics i think.

i love how misunderstood starts off calm and serenely...then the brooding chorus w/ cellos underneath pops in to kidna give you a taste of the song's direction. then it bounces back into the major melodic section....and then kicks into heavy overdrive ;) and theno f course that whole creepy feedback/whammy section w/ JR's spider staccato riffs.

i pissed my pants when i was listening to it at night the first time. JP makes a sound like a monster from hell emerging from teh depths of the abyss.

inassociationwithdeanlearner

Does anyone know the significance of the samples in SDV?
I can understand the significance of the first one 'He doesn't know what a woman is...' but the other ones seem quite random to me.

Lord Abortion
06-21-2006, 04:45 PM
I really like it, it's heavier than alot of the other stuff, and only Vacant and parts of ITNOG are ballads, which are normally what I like most in DT's arsenal.
However, It's much more of a metal album than people are used to, I think, and that puts people off slightly.

Moses
06-21-2006, 04:56 PM
I hate their ballads. James Labrie has the worst type of voice for that stuff.

Atica

ToT is a great album, I love to listen to it. I also think that many people at the begginnig dislike it because it is heavier than the other ones, and are used to a more slow type of music.

I agree with you, James doesn't have a good voice for balads.

I think their early albums were much more heavy than TOT and certainly more metal. Especially I&W.

I&W wasn't so consistently heavy. ToT doesn't have a full ballad-type song until Vacant. The opening of Endless Sacrifice is soft, but the song as a whole is still heavy. I&W on the other hand has Another Day, Surrounded, Wait For Sleep...

And I agree that James is at his best on Octavarium. My favorite DT albums are a bit different than most people in here. I'd rate 6DOIT and Octavarium both over SFAM, probably over I&W too.

i think most peopel dont know his voice has been impaired for several years now...and is only JUST returning back to full strength. he injured his vocal cords or something because he vomited after some bad food.

Dream Theatre = Untalanted

Malmsteen + Steve Vai + Michael Angelo Batio + Nitro + Racer X = more talanted than Dream Theatre

no question John Petucci Sucks at technique

This guy is one heck of a fool

anyways is the live in tokyo/5 years in a livetime or somthin dvd any good?

i got that dvd and it is pretty cool, although the production is a little bad, but worth getting for the music. especially if you like they're older stuff (e.g pre FII).

Yeah, I've only watched the DVD a couple of times because it won't play on some of my DVD players, but I like it.

It also has some interesting things like the stuff at ronnie scotts with the singer from napalm death and marillion. It also has a clip of nightmare cinema:D

it's a great DVD, you should get it.
esp. the I&W in tokyo. like you said, his voice is ace on 'em. plus....they actually seem to be more animated than they are now O_O

edit: rep ++ for IAWDL for sending me songs :]

...Are we listening to the same concert? I have the I&W/5YIAL DVD, and LaBrie is pretty bad on both of them. Granted on 5YIAL you're seeing him right after his vocal rupture, but he's not really any better on I&W. Lot's of shrieking.

Wasn't it on the Awake tour or just before recording Awake and he got food poisoning.

I only have Octavarium. I didn't like it at first but i think its pretty good now. Anyway, is this cd a good representation of what the band sounds like?

one thing i never understood about the labrie/vocal chords thing is that the live covers on ACOS are some of his best live vocals i've heard from james, especially the led zeppelin songs. he doesn't miss a single note at all on the cd, but i'm not sure whether those songs were recorded after his food poisoning and only released in '95 or not, which would explain it all.

Well, the band sound pretty different on each record. If you like 8v you'll probably like their other stuff.

You serious, I have a video boot of the I&W tour and his voice sounds perfect on all of the songs, the boot has a very good set too (If your a fan of I&W)

8vm's pretty good but most of DT's other CDs (I&W, Awake, SFAM) are a lot better

His riffs mainly, but that's not to say he doesn't have some cream inducing solos.

His solos by far. I honestly think Petrucci is one of the worst riff writers ever.

/don't hurt me. :(

LaBrie sounds rather messed up on the LSFNY album too, I think it was...

Get Images and Words, Awake, or Scenes From A Memory.

In fact, get all 3.

In my honest opinion, Images and Words is the best DT album, plus it has Metropolis part 1 which pretty much defines them.:thumb:

i like his 8vm solos :]
especially the razor's edge one mMm i just wanna....mm it's so good. i can play it im really happy :]

i think petrucci's a great player overall--riffs or solos. some riffs are amazing like the glass prison one...and the lie one.

im actually not as big a fan of metropolis pt. 1 :\ granted, it's a great song and myung's solo never gets old for me :] but it doesn't click for me as much. so i really dont like it when they use it as an encore.

Imagine them playing ACOS as an encore.:thumb:

ACOS is the other song that defines prog metal and DT, for me at least.

ACOS is very good (especially another world=some of the most beautiful music ever)...but at this point, i'd much rather them play 8vm live again as an encore. or the spirit carries on. when i saw it (8vm)...it totally blew me away. i absolutely whore that song, and i play along w/ it every day at least once. still working on that shredding...sigh.

I crapped my pants when I was at the Radio City show and they played Octavarium with a full orchestra. Not to mention the other amazing songs and 6DOIT.:thumb:

I think I'm going to be on the DVD "Score," too. If the cameras panned to the left side of the audience, I will be seen easily since I am in the aisle seat standing with a white shirt on.:thumb:

i just hope the orchestra parts don't get TOO intertwined w/ DT's parts. then it'll sound like a mess at times like metallica's S&M

It was either during the North American leg of the Awake tour or between the North American and Japanese legs. The 5YIAL commentary mentions it but I forget when exactly it happened.

The thing with S&M is that it was pretty much too pronounced.

The orchestra came in when needed at the Radio city DT show. While I was watching, when the orchestra wasn't playing, the conductor was watching the band play and whenever Rudess or Petrucci did a solo, the conductor would do like a "hell yeah that was awesome" motion, and he would be smiling and amazed, nodding with approval. It was really cool.

Now, I was at S&M NY live and at this Radio city show with orchestra, and I have to say that the orchestra fit a lot better because DT's music is more suited for it. S&M was amazing to see, once and a lifetime thing(same with radio city).:thumb:
