i totally agree. when i read pinkfreud's description, i was hurt. i don't think he's heard all that portnoy can do.

i know the poll isn't based all on chops and writing ability, but also on influence and things like that...but portnoy should still do extremely well imo.

to me, he is the epitome of the drumming world right now. i realize people like moon, bonham and peart are much more influential and thus "great," but give portnoy some time...and i think he'll be just as much a legend as them :smoke:

That's completely opposite to what most people argue about him though :x

Ok, he doesn't say anything about technicality, but I swear in an older round (Maybe the first round Portnoy appeared in), something about his technicality and lack-of-creation.
I think it was something like "just plays technical beats as fast as possible and lacks any creativity"

I think people just think of him as a machine because he's in Dream Theater.

Portnoy is the youngest ever drummer to make the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame.

I don't think anyone is arguing with the fact he's awesome, but obviously when you get to the top 10 its hard to seperate people.

TREASON!

Peart is a good drummer though.
that's another thing.

peart is sposed to be so much better than portnoy, but i think it's safe to say that portnoy is much more musically capable and technically capable as well.
the only thing peart has is that...portnoy's drumming derives mainly from peart's.

i love rush and tool but dream theater still takes the cake for me.

someone said that people assume portnoy is a machine because he's in dream theater. i think that's a good point, but it's a completely false assumption to make. sure, they can be at times, but i'd say the majority of their writing flows very well

Marty Friedman has a huge list of music to his name.

Cacophony, Solo and Megadeth (Possible other bands too?).

If you haven't heard any of his solos stuff, I really suggest getting Dragon's Kiss, or Music For Speeding before you get this album.

I prefer Music For Speeding, but Dragon's Kiss is still an awesome CD.

I would love Friedman and Petrucci in a new sort of Cacophony-esque shred band.

Dragon's Kiss is similar to the stuff he did with Cacophony, since it was written around the same, and I think Marty wrote the majority of Cacophony's music too. The only other solo album of his I have is Music for Speeding, which was in the Daily Upload a few weeks ago. I haven't listened to it all, but the songs I have listened to remind me of Satch.

Ideal setlist would be WDADU to SFAM.

Tried listening to Octavarium for the first time in a few months, and it still doesn't work for me.

I mean a lot of the songs sound good, but in the same way that a pop song can sound good. DT have got all these great melodies, but I am no longer feeling any of those spine chilling/tingling moments. I no longer have this urge to sing along like I do with L2L, ACOS, or anything pre SFAM.

More importantly, they're not 'progressing' any more. All the song structures are practically the same. Compare with 'Only a matter of time' - I still haven't managed to identify that song's structure (it might be just me though). They've also been 'metally' for the last few albums.

Shortly After this i bought tickets to go and watch them live in wolverhampton (anybody go btw?) and they were imense. Whilst watching them 'The Glass Prison' came on and i just stood in awe at the whole bands technical ability.

I bought there entire collection and at the minute i love 6 degrees of inner turbulence, octavarium and train of thought.

Blind Faith is amazing. Its one of my favorite DT songs and its my favorite song on the 6DOIT album.

The unison with JP and JR in the final solo section is probiably one of the most insane things ive ever heard.:thumb:

oohhh yea.
and then they play the final run up and the last 5 notes are echoed-delayed and oh my god i cream everytime at that moment.

one word to describe blind faith: transcendent.

Nice observation :)

My name is spelt with two T's usually.

When I was invited for the gmail account, the guy who sent the invite to me only spelt my name with one T, I don't really care how it's spelt, it still says the same thing, but yeah :)

Edit: 7:40 remaining... So excited tbh :D

Thank you so much ghettoeddo, words cannot express my gratitude at the moment.
