I think I'm the only person who doesn't like Octavarium (the album).

I really hope that they can turn to their old, classic stuff, because that's what I and most people like.

So, yeah, Sad But True hooked me up with Scenes From A Memory. It's the first time I've heard Dream Theater, and I've got to say, for all the hype surrounding Petrucci and whoever the keys player is, they disappointed me greatly. IMO they suck. Petrucci is quite obviously a brilliant guitarist, but I can't hear where the keyboard player's reputation comes from. And I hate the whole cheese-metal sound they have going. And I detest the singer's voice. And that one tune - Home - with what sounds like a chick getting her brains humped out in the background was just off-putting. I actually only just heard the first (remotely) good keyboard part on this entire album (I'm listening as I type), in The Dance Of Eternity, at about 3:45.

Anyway. Am I missing something? Is this just a sh1t album, or was I just not meant to appreciate their music?

that cool riff in the middle of strange deja vu is amazing. i think petrucci used a fender for that :O

they'll make new albums for sure. portnoy wants to finish his 12-step deal. and as much as i love octavarium...i think they could end much stronger. i personally wanna see them take their music into a NEW direction, rather than regressive into the old I&W/awake days. it's been done, and the whole idae of prog rock/metal is to push new boundaries and try new things...

so that's what im hoping for. i know whatever they do, i'll be pleased.

Listen to yourselves, people! Dream Theater do make crappy songs. To say that all their work kicks ***, is being arrogant.

"I walk beside you" sucked. Octavarium could have been better (The bloody song isn't a whole song - it's a series of songs put together. Compare it to ACOS). They're not even progressing any more, all their songs are metally now.

I've really been digging ToT lately. It's strange... I'm a fan of DT's early stuff. That's when I think they were at their best (part from SFAM - that album is effing brilliant), and although ToT is their heaviest album, there's just something about it that I love. I think when you really delve deep into the music and give it hundreds of listens you find the prog elements are still there. They're not Awake or I&W prog-standard, but they're still awesome.

Having said that, I hope DT's next album makes a return to their early 90's era, otherwise we may never hear that special, unique music again. :(

Yeah you're absolutely right ghetto, but I'm saying that I feel like they're turning FROM progressive all together. With their earlier music, you could tell straight away it was a very technical/prog song, however with their latest music, at first it seems like it's fairly straight, you know? Like just another rock or metal group, despite the prog element still being there.

You follow?

The 40 minute song is the second disc of 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence, but it was split up into 8 (I think) parts.

the entire second disk of six degrees is one song.
just broken up into sections.

every listen through a dream theater song reveals new intricacies you will have missed. even after almost a year of continuous listening, i'm still finding new things. it helps to turn down the bass sometimes to hear other lines here and there :] music souds different from your iPod, CD player, home system, car stereo

No way man.

It's actually quite awesome.

A Change of Seasons pretty much defines Progmetal.

Octavarium is just plain awesome.:thumb:

I would much prefer to listen to one amazing 24 minute song, than several average length songs. Its not like these songs are just the same riffs being repeated over and over, they are.. well, progressive.

*raise hand*

Many of my favorite songs are over 20 minutes. I'm listening to a 28 minute song right now.

I can sit for that time, with A Change of Seasons, Octavarium (just the intro gets me bored), The Odyssey-Symphony X, and The Divine Wings of Tragedy-Symphony X.

Well, depends on the song, many prog songs over 20 minutes are great because they have a lot of versatility.

I do listen long songs.

Octavarium is one of my favorite songs. I can listen to it multiple times in a row without getting bored and its awesome. To be honest, I don't agree at all with people who say the intro is 'boring.' I think its an awesome intro, I dunno whether its the awesome pads or the echoy guitar, but it defiantely rocks.

Octavarium is a really great song.

I love how this thread has picked up. For awhile it was only a handful of regular posters in this thread.

I think its Jordan playing a pedal steel guitar.
