I just got a Genesis album my friend converted for me...Trespass, it's called.

I gotta absorb it later...I haven't actually heard any Genesis, but I remember my dad listening to Peter Gabriel on long car rides. Rather messed up, but absolutely amazing.

I'm not sure what you'll think of Trespass. I'd definitly say that Foxtrot and Selling England By the Pound are better, so if you enjoy that then you'll love those.

I love that old school Genesis/Yes/ELP style Moog solo in Octavarium...

Its a pretty crappy setlist.

With Innocence Faded, Raise the Knife, Another Won, the Octavarium songs and Six Degrees, it can't be bad.

Chu
05-01-2006, 05:50 AM
I've been listenning to Octavarium again recently, sweet, never really realised the finish to Panic Attack before.. What is it?

For some reason, I really like I Walk Beside You (It's prolly my favourite song, for LaBrie, his singing is amazing (I'll finally say LaBrie BELONGS in Dream Theater), the final chorus, starting from the first word, is like.. :naughty:  :p :smash: all in one)

Happy
05-01-2006, 05:55 AM
Innocence Faded is one of the worst songs on Awake imo. Why not play Voices or Scarred. Raise the Knife is pretty bad and they already played most of 6D on Budokan...
I love James' singing in it. It gives me shivers.

Prince of Darkness
05-01-2006, 06:44 AM
IMO, LaBrie's voice is the best on Awake. Listen to Caught in a Web, Lie and Voices. That's really amazing singing.

I noticed something on the Budokan dvd. Close to the end of the concert, LaBrie's voice turns really unbearable. On ITNOG, his voice his horrible.

Live Scenes From New York is a good CD, I haven't seen the videos of it (Friend burnt me the 3 discs a while ago), but the CDs are awesome, the musicianship is A+. I think every song sounds so well done, with every song having subtle differences from their CD counterparts, definately adding to the songs imo (Even if the quality isn't Budokan-esque).

And then, A Change of Seasons Live, what a great song to close with aye.

LSFNY is a definite must buy. IMO, Budokan lacks the homely atmosphere felt in LSFNY. While Budokan is in a huge stadium with a large audience, LSFNY is set on a small stage creating a nice, cosy environment. Plus, the audience in LSFNY is way better than the one in Budokan. Think I'm crazy? Watch Learning to Live on LSFNY, and you WILL be clapping with them towards the end.

Hey everyone, I have a powertab of Never Enough, and I'm completely, totally, seriously loving the guitar/keyboard Unison/harmony lead part that starts off with that Gminsus2 arpeggio. The problem is, I can't see how John played the last 2 beats of every 2nd bar like the way it's tabbed, and given the tempo is 128bpm, and he's playing 16th note triplets and the pattern would be hard to play accurately at even a slower tempo. I know it's JP an' everythin' but dang!

Is there any sort of official tab or anything, or has anyone got a tab with more accurate fingerings for this section, I'd love to learn it the right way. Thanks.

ghettoeddo
05-03-2006, 01:49 AM
i have the official tab book...but it's actually worse than the powertab. the fingerings are near impossible at that speed.

i'd say the powertabs is actually your best bet :\ or muck through it and find your own fingerings.

taht's my favorite part of the song too...too bad it's the ONLY part i cant play :upset:

you know what you CAN do also...figure out the key for those runs in the last half of the bar...and omit troublesome notes. if you can keep it 1-2 notes per string and a steady pattern like that, it shiouldn't be too bad. the problem comes when there's like...3 notes, 2, 3, then 1 note on another adjacent string.

I seriously doubt that book is official then, unless you know 100% that Petrucci sat there and transcribed it all for them to publish, otherwise it's probably just some random guys doing their best like any other tab book, which would explain the even worse fingerings.

I might have a go at re-arranging it, I think I tried before and gave up though...

All you guys have to do to open the DSOTM cover is to download Stuffit. I hate having a Mac though, cause stuff like this always happens. If that doesn't work, drop me your AIMs and I'll send it to you that way.

I seriously doubt that book is official then, unless you know 100% that Petrucci sat there and transcribed it all for them to publish, otherwise it's probably just some random guys doing their best like any other tab book, which would explain the even worse fingerings.

I might have a go at re-arranging it, I think I tried before and gave up though...

yea it's 2 guys who interpreted it their way. for the most part, it's hwo petrucci plays it though. but obviously, the solo sections are gonna have huge discrepancies.

sorry man~
if you get a better ararngement...let me know. cuz i really wanna learn it too

Would it be too much trouble to scan the page, or change the powertab to how it is in the book? Maybe if it is actually the way John plays, it might make some sense.

My music teacher at college has studied with Petrucci before. He's not a fan of his style of playing though so it's not the best thing in the world for him.

he plays it too fast live for anyone to remember exactly what he played unless you recorded it. but i doubt you can get a good quality recording of it anywhere...

MRDucran, i don't have a scanner...and im not good at powertabs. but ill see what i can do. i really think the powertabs version is better, it has much less string skipping and position shifting

the MPA isn't gonna like...take me out for copying the "official" tab book right?

nvm i edited it. it's spot on. some parts are smoother by keeping 3 note-patterns on one string, but it's also got more rougher string-skipping parts.

I've got a bootleg from last Halloween where they play all of Octavarium. It's filmed from the audience and the quality isn't that great but you can see roughly where he's playing the unison, so unless it's more a problem of not knowing which strings he's playing instead of whereabout on the fretboard, I could upload that part of the video later.

I believe they play it alot. Just because it isn't on a DVD, doesn't mean they don't play it. Portnoy makes sure each city never gets the same show twice. The cities where they filmed the DVD may have had TGP a year or two earlier.

Petrucci's solos don't often do much for me, his riffs are where it's at, and Awake is riffalicious.. I don't care about any other instrument, they just add to Petrucci's classiness.

I like the lyrics that aren't stupid like "Honor Thy Father". For the most part I think they are well written.
Agreed. Mp's lyrics as a whole are pretty meh.

I still like these songs though.

nah the sax on AD is alright, it works with the feel of the song for me.
TALW is gayest song atm, although i know what people mean about SS intro.

my bad, i did actually mean IWBY, i always get those two mixed up: i remember them both as the songs on 8vm that i never listen to. TALW i dont listen to because i never really in the mood for a ballady type song.

Oh, apart from surrounded...but that's just my favourite DT song altogether.

jpshortstuff
05-10-2006, 04:14 PM
yeah surrounded is pretty cool, i like the way the melody and singing work well together at the verse around 2:00, and the short thing at 2:34/3:28 is pretty cool aswell. Some parts later on dont always work for me. The little interludey/solo thing at 3:39 is good aswell. Also the way it reverts to the soft thing for the ending. Actually theres quite a few things i like.
Hehe look at me all song time quoting.

ohhh man. lyrically, it's very poignant and has a lot to say. i'd rate it in the top 10 DT songs ever.

DT ballads are nice :] i don't think any song is gay except for lines in the sand. but that's just me. i personally love IWBU and TALW. im excited to see TALW on DVD
