Are there any other people here besides me who are just angered by the fact that everyone in Dream Theater turns into a statue when they play shows? They're so unbelieveably dull live.

Im not. I go to the show for the music, not to see them run around on stage. For the April First show, they moved aroung quite a bit. I believe there was a part where Myung went over to Petrucci's side and LaBrie moved around alot also.

Well I mean of course you'd go to see them because of their music, but I would probably get bored after a while if they didn't do at least a little something. I was just watching them play "This Dying Soul" on some Youtube video and they really didn't move at all for several minutes.

While they are all very good at their instruments, they really need to work on their showmanship.

Trust me, they moved alot more for the new DVD then the Live at Budokon DVD.

I wasn't bored at all during their concert, but I can see why some people would be.

I disagree, a Dream Theater show is all about the music, and in that department they are incredible, a band doesn't need to run around the stage to put on a great show. They aren't really as static as people make out, LaBrie does a great job of getting the crowd going, and the shows have great light and video shows. I don't remember ever hearing anyone saying they went to a Dream Theater show and they got bored (despite the shows being 3 hours long).

I agree. When I went to the concert, I was so into it that I lost track of time. I was really disappointed that it was over, not because it was boring or I wished they played a better song off of ToT, but because it was over and I will have to wait to see them again.

Did anyone else know Portnoy is doing a couple of shows with Billy Sheehan, Paul Gilbert and Gary Cherone as a tribute to The Who at the end of May?
Yeah, Portnoy has organised and performed 4 tribute acts now, with various musicians (Rush, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and The Who). I think CDs/DVDs of these might be available on mikeportnoy.com.

Nah I don't think they're boring live.
They move a bit though. Labrie's been more on stage this tour, jumping about and stuff, Mike's always a a show off and even Myung's been moving about a bit like playing Petrucci's guitar with one hand and playing his bass with the other.

Rudess just smiles a lot. And spins. Gotta love it.

If you wannna go see a great stage show but not really great music...go see Kiss. If you wanna hear great music but not have the best stage show...go see Dream Theater.

Hmmm...I probably can't speak for everyone cause I've never listened to Jame's solo album or Transatlantic but Liquid Tension Experiment is AWESOME. John Petrucci's 'Suspended Animation' record is very good also.

I'm already a fan of LTE and was kinda wondering about other side projects they had. I think I'll try just downloaded some random solo/side project stuff from the band.

It's so nice to hear Floyd with decent drumming, Portnoy just spruced those tracks up for me.

james's solo stuff is really incredible. seriously, i highly recommend it.

song strucutre is all prety much the same, but it's easy listening compared to DT's stuff.

i think DT moves more for DVD filming shows than other shows. i saw em on gigantour, and htis last tour and when i compare that to DVD's, the difference is there.

but i sure as hell wasn't bored and i was in row 28. even my friends who didnt know a single song said it was the most amazing show they've ever been to.

i love dream theatre. Petrucci is a legend. LaBrie is a very talented vocalist i think, but it gets to me sometimes. the cheesiness. some of the vocals i really like, but the first verse of "As I Am" gets to me. the first vocals on Endless Sacrifice are similar, but i like them. i like it's chorus vocals.

This Dying Soul vocals > As I Am and similar vocals.

i only know Train of Thought enough to give my opinion on it, but i have six degrees and octav. aswell.

what else should i get?

It was the original Metropolis PtII, they came up with a few ideas and I think started writing a few tracks years before the album was released. It wasn't supposed to be released in the place of FII, they wrote all of FII while they were switching management and record companies as their next album, they only started working on SFAM properly once Jordan joined.

Fine musicians that, as many other bands, have made the same record about six or seven times, just backwards and with different hair. I don`t question their ability to play (obvious), but that their songs are very boring and in the middle of all genres at the same time. Scale-wanking and cheesy synths doesn`t do it for me.

Happy

Most likely if you`re very into the band, as I can tell the difference between all of Cannibal Corpse`s albums, while others hear just growl and drums.
The drummer in my band is a sworn fan of DT, so I`ve heard every album. Too clinical, too cheesy, bad vocals, still scale-wanking... It`s the way it tastes to me, but thats what makes good discourses, right. ;)

If I want complex metal, I think Cryptopsy does it with way more punch and better vocals. :) I saw one of DT`s dvds a while ago, it`s actually most fun when they **** it up, or Portnoy loose a stick, but that`s the action you`ll get. Myung has his pokerface, Portnoy spits around, LaBrie take walks, Rudess swings his keyboard around while staring at his LCD, and Petrucci....yeah, you get the point.

they're not ... "the who" or maiden or GWAR by any means, but i don't think that would fit the music.

Yeah, me too. I`m interested. I`v seen Spiral Arcitect moving around heavily onstage, so I suppose DT could do it to. Whatever, the main concern is the music, and I don`t like it. It`s very simple.

My main concern is that you came in here bashing DT because all their albums sound the same, when that is obviously not the case. People who first get into DT usually have one (maybe two) favorite album and it takes them a little while to fully get into the other albums, simply because they all sound fairly different from each other.
Oh, and the other problem is you saying they have bad vocals, when LaBrie is one of the best singers in rock.

His voice is a bit of an aquired taste. There's plenty of people out there who say they like DT until the vocals kick in.

it is true that none of their albums are even remotely similar.
but for every one of us that love em, there are gonna be 10 more that hate em. that's the fun of music eh?

i think a lot of people shy away from em (although they wont admit this) because they're considered the benchmark prog metal band and are much more mainstream and known on the prog scene than most any other band.
there still seems to be this pervasive "avoid mainstream" kinda attitude around here

Happy

Which kind of sucks seeing as mainstream can still be good.
DT may be one of the most mainstream prog bands but they're nowhere near popular.

ghettoeddo
04-27-2006, 02:25 AM
yea...
i mean...a band is mainstream because it appeals to a large # of people. yeayeayea the mass can't think for themselves or know anything about music. but that's why dream theater remains unknown to "the mass."

i think DT's comin into that scene w/ songs like i walk beside you. i really do hope they get more attention cuz i feel they really deserve it. i wouldn't mind them "selling out" a little bit as long as they didn't stray too far.

As long as they don't do a complete Genesis-style U-turn.... although I can't see that happening.

Yeah, DT's one of those bands that a lot bigger in Europe/Asia than in the States. And Genesis only sold out cause Gabriel left the band in Collins' control...

Could be The Glass Prison (The intro wah riff is just secks, and to be able to play it properly, after a long time trying  ), can't do much more of the song though.

I can play the intro as well, but it doesnt sound right because I dont own a Wah pedal. As for the rest of the song, I never attempted to learn it.

Well, "bashing" is unavoidable when taste is subjective. :) I own "Awake", which has some good riffs in it, and I`ve borrowed "Images and Words", "Scenes from a memory", I copied "Six Degrees.." (also some cool moments), borrowed "Train..." and "Octavarium", and I`ve seen "Budokan"- and "Scenes..."-DVD, and I still didn`t find anything more I liked. At least I gave them a serious try, as opposed to alot of people slagging of black/speed/death-metal cause all they hear is "noise". As for listening to prog, I`d still rather go for Spiral Arcitect or Pagans Mind.

And I still think LaBrie sounds too nice and Iron Maiden-sk (not my cup of tea), and too constrained almost all the time. ....on the other hand, I don`t know what other singer who could be in Dream Theater. It couldn`t be a showman, thats for sure, it would ruin the balance.

I like playing the UAGM solo, or what I can play of it at least. Loads of trademark Petrucci licks and all the whammy-bar stuff just makes it fun to play, aswell as being one of my favourite solos of his.

That's cool, I appreciate that you have actually listened to them and decided you don't like them rather than being an ignoramus about it. I just wanted to point that their albums are vastly different and that (whether you like his vocal style or not), Labrie is very talented.

Would it be too much to ask for you to send me a song or two by Spiral Architect or Pagan's Mind? I've been wanting to check them out but can't find any of their stuff anywhere.

Did you get some Spiral A.? Unfortunatley, I don`t possess my Pagans Mind-cd`s at the moment, they`re cardboardboxes being transported to my current appartement, but I still have Spiral A. on my computer, so I can send you a song or two.

Basically, I HAD to check DT out `cause of my drummer`s constant raving about them, but we belong in different genres. He`s more Iron Maiden, Trivium, Stratovarius...and I`m more into Cannibal Corpse, Satyricon, Marduk, Bolt Thrower etc., which he can`t stand. But I appreciate the drum-techniques he aquires by listening to Portnoy. Oh, and we came to an agreement that we can meet over Opeth. Be both like them. :chug:

Sorry for the extremely late reply but better than no reply at all (I don't visit this place often, as you can tell from my post count).

Yeh, I heard it on triple RRR 102.7 (this is Australian radio, of course, but maybe you can hear it on the internet). Probably a one off though.
