Thats cool
Guess what guys. I may become the new guitarist for a band at my high school. What makes this super sweet is that they are opening up for Dream Theater and Spocks Beard in August.
If I get this position, you will be seeing less of me until the gig.
Im off to work on my chops. Peace...

You lucky bastard....
If I had to open for DT I would **** myself.

Can't wait for the new DVD to come out, the setlist is pretty poor though, probably my least favourite live release setlist. It's cool they've finally done Innocence Faded on a DVD now.
Haha, I was watching the live Tokyo DVD the other day, the fan who says "James Labrie is the greatest singer in the world, that's all I have to say". Haha, what a guy.

you could get someone to send you samples songs of all the albums that you're considering, then buy the album you want. Of course the problem then is that you'll want all the albums because of how amazing the songs are, but you'll end up buying them all anyway if you want to be a true fan.

Ok as this is the official DT thread hopefully someone here will be able to answer my question. On the live at Budokan DVD i have noticed that in the song "stream of conciousness" there appears to be an alternate drum fill, and consequently alternate footage. This occurs during the section where the instrument cut out and we are left with just the bass and Drums (just after petruccis solo. Now bear with me because this may have to describe this in detail in order to explain it.
Depending on the audio track i'm running (stereo or 5.1) or possibly depending where i click on the time line of the player (i use power Dvd, but i dont know if this makes a difference) the camera will focus sometimes on the keyboard players hands and then go to myung and then portnoy plays the studio drum fill whilst the camera is still focussing on myung. However other time the camera focuses on portnoy as the keys and guitar cut out (instead of jordan) then goes to myung as usual, but then instead of playing the studio fill the camera switches to portnoy who plays a completely different (and far more interesting) drum fill. I don't know why this has been done. and to me begs the question of how many overdubs have been used on the dvd and which bits they are actually playing live, but perhaps it was soley meant to be an easter egg.
If anyone else has noticed this I would love to hear your oppinion. and if not (and you own the budokan dvd) then please check out this confusing little glitch.

normal overdub? does it not seem strange that a band like DT should use overdubs, especially seeing as i seem to remember mike portnoy saying somewhere that he disliked overdubs. Plus surely overdubs are only used when theres mistakes and the non-studio drum fill was awesome.. having one or the other i wouldnt mind, but keeping the both just seems really odd, and pretty anoying when i'm waiting to hear one fill, and the other boring one comes in. a little consistency would be nice. but mind you the dvd as a whole is brilliant and they are still a great band. just watching how easy petrucci makes everything look just makes me want to give up guitar and hand my head in shame lol,

its annoying when the fills there one minute and gone the next, and to me that fill symbolises the excitement of watching a live dvd, if i wanted to hear the exact studio recording i'd listen to the cd. but i think i can let i go somehow :p i can always backtrack and find again if it really bothers me lol,

Images and Words is the definitive Dream Theater album. Buy it, and then work from there. Essentially there are two types of DT fans, the prog fans and the metal fans. If you're the former, buy the earlier albums. If you're the latter, go for the most recent albums.

I think that's the only way you can play it. That's what makes it difficult.
I have a few videos on How-To play a Chapman stick, apparantly it is very similar to a Piano (The vide I have mentions something about the dexterity in your hand, and how you 'tap' the notes in the same fashion as you press a key on a piano), it's not hard to play, just requires a lot of muscle repetition, and just overall knowledge of music imo.

I saw these guys at Gigantour in the Coliseum Expo here. It was quite possibly the most awesome thing I've ever seen. I lost my goddamn shirt though.
The Glass Prison was the first song I ever got into by Dream Theater and I still love it to this day. I have all of their official [media] merch. SFAM is basically the best album ever released. -fanboy- Anyway..

Either Strange Deja Vu or Fatal Tragedy. I have to say though, if the first part One Last Time was longer, it would be in contention for being my fave song, I love the first minute/minute and a half in that song.
What would people say was the essential Dream Theater side projects to listen to?

Hmmm...I probably can't speak for everyone cause I've never listened to Jame's solo album or Transatlantic but Liquid Tension Experiment is AWESOME. John Petrucci's 'Suspended Animation' record is very good also.

James' solo stuff is pretty damn good.
LTE is my favourite though.
Did anyone else know Portnoy is doing a couple of shows with Billy Sheehan, Paul Gilbert and Gary Cherone as a tribute to The Who at the end of May?

At this moment? That would be 'Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence.' At first I didn't really care for Disc 2. Now I realize how incredible it really is. Man, won't it be awesome once that Radio Hall DVD comes out.

Yes, it will be awsome when the new DVD comes out. My parents just bought a 42'' Plasma with a 7 speaker Bose surround sound. I plan on cranking up the system and just watching the whole thing, front to end.
Are there any other people here besides me who are just angered by the fact that everyone in Dream Theater turns into a statue when they play shows? They're so unbelieveably dull live.
