I would kill tons of people to see Tool and DT do a tour together.
John Myung is a big fan of Tool too, which astonished me a little actually.
Seriously, a Tool and DT tour would just...rock so hard it isn't even funny
I was thinking of a DT/Rush tour. They said one of their dreams is to tour with Rush someday.

or metallica and dt. they're signed to the same label (elektra), so why not? i would give all my money and my left nut for tickets to that.
Metallica and Dream Theater? Are you Kidding? I like the old metallica but Those they really don't fit together....
Yeah a tour with Rush would be great! The did one with yes, so why not?

DT/Rush > DT/Symphony X > DT/Tool
Totally disagree.
IMO, Rush is too soft to play with DT. You'd get the older people going who love Rush's classic stuff, and then Dream Theater would open up with "As I Am" and blow them away. The metal heads would not like Rush nearly as much, and the Rush-heads would not stand for heavy Dream Theater.
Symphony X playing with DT would be, well, if one band played instead of two. Sure, SX's stuff does not EXACTLY sound like Dream Theater's, but the point is that both bands are technically proficient in their playing, so to anyone who doesn't like it, it would seem like a complete and utter wank fest.
Tool playing with Dream Theater...well, they play progressive metal in a totally different way than Dream Theater does. Whereas Dream Theater emphasize technical prowess, Tool utilize compartively simple, but yet complex, rhythms and song structures to create their songs. Tool and Dream Theater both have heavy material, so they would both appeal to metal heads, neither has that classic prog rock appeal, so nobody wanting Rush would be disgusted by the wall of Petrucci distortion, and you'd get alot more variety than if you had SX playing with them
I realize I've made generalizations in that, and I don't care, I'm not being totally serious, except the part about Tool being a better fit than the others. And I like Rush and what little SX I have heard, so don't think I'm just slagging off on them. :thumb:

If Tool and DT did a tour together I would HAVE to go, no matter the cost.
However, I don't think they run in the same circles, although they're both progressive-ish they're pretty much at different ends of the spectrum. Rhythm based vs. Virtuoso.
Shame though, it would be an unbelievable tour.

Compared to Something like Images and Words or Awake, or even Scenes from a Memory, It really sucks. My fav. is Images and Words, and then maby SFAM, but from then on, Albums like Six Degrees or Train of Thought, its to different. That's one thing I hate about oldish metal or just rock bands, they all seem to turn sour in the end. They try be stay too ''Hip'' and ''Happening''. Like Metallica, WTF? Short hair, clean shaves, runningshoes, and baggy pants. Not at all cool for a metal band. What we need is a change, back to the old days. Tight pants, Long hair and, hell, throw in a Father Christmas beard, I mean why the f*ck not? thats where metal started and thats how it should stay.Traditional. :thumb:

He writes some great lyrics, and what do you think he was doing on the albums you like? Not writing?
ToT is great, As I Am is a great song, Endless Sacrifice has an amazing chorus and some great vocals from Labrie, Honor thy Father is okay, Stream of Conciousness is DT's best instrumental IMO, and In the Name of God is one of my favorite DT songs, amazing solo and some great riffage.

Just a heads up, Images and Words is nothing like Train of Thought, so don't be expecting it. It isn't nearly as heavy, but it is an amazing album, much better that Train of Though IMO.
I'm not sure about the status of their next album, I heard a rumor a while back that they might be writing parts of it now but I'm not certain. They do have a few dates for Europe this summer at a couple festivals and I'm not sure about any other dates they have planned for this year.

I'm not sure if The Glass Prison will ever happen though, because I don't know if anyone can learn the solo section...and even if we did, we don't have a keyboardist, and more than likely never will...these guys are more into melodic metal / metalcore than prog, so...
I still plan to try and keep learning at least the bass to TGP though

No, I'm talking about the little keyboard breaks after the solos that go Petrucci-Rudess-Petrucci-Rudess -Petrucci/Rudess. The countermelodies Myung is playing against Rudess in those sections are incredible.

I don't think anyone is pissed at him. I just think that Myung is more poetic than the other members, and sometimes it can get hard to incorporate this into a band when your not the leader.
But no one knows, he doesn't talk really often!

They never did LTE purposely without him.
LTE was originally Portnoy's side project from DT. He couldn't find a guitarist that he wanted to work with and his wife suggested that he use Petrucci because the two of them work so well together. When LTE formed, Rudess was still working with the Dixie Dreggs if I'm not mistaken. After working with Rudess, when Sherinian was out of the band, Jordan was an obvious choice.
It just became a stroke of luck that 3 members of DT happened to be in LTE.
After one of the more recent albums they had a rule set down that if you were to submit lyrics, they had to have a natural flow to them so that they did not have to spend time working with them to try and make some sense of of them for a song. Myung had written generally abstract and non flowing poetry for them to use as lyrics and Petrucci and Portnoy had to sit down and work a song out of it. They still accept all lyrics that come their way, Myung has just never submitted any since.

Dream Theater is my fav metal band. but i have to admit that at times Labrie and Rudess make me absolutely CRINGE. some parts with the really wanky keyboards and when labrie sings all high it makes me almost embarrassed to listen to them. but when i hear the rest of the band it makes it all worth it. dont get me wrong, i like labrie's singing and rudess's playing. sometimes they make some of Dream Theater's most pivitol(sp?) moments for me, its just that they also make me cringe as well. but my fav band by far. they are the only band so far to make me bang my head and cry in the same song.

What do you guys think is their best song lyrically? Space Dye Vest always got me... really all of Awake, and Blind Faith and Misunderstood.
The JoZ
02-26-2005, 11:53 AM
First off, lyrically, I don't think their is a 'best' song of theirs. Alot of their songs speak to me in very different ways.
Particular favorites of mine include "Caught in a Web", "The Mirror/Lie", "Scarred", "The Glass Prison", "Trial of Tears", and really all of Train of Thought.
Secondly, for every moment that Jordan Rudess goes and does a 'wanky' solo, he makes up for it with something very tasteful, and beautiful. The piano solo in "Blind Faith", the piano in "Endless Sacrifice", almost all of Scenes From a Memory, the piano parts in "In the Name of God". Jordan's playing is simply top notch, and even if you don't like it when he goes and plays at Ludicrious Speed, I think there are more than enough moments to make up for that.
That being said, I do think there are a few times where I don't like Labrie's higher register singing, but most of it is off off Images and Words, so...he's learned to use his lower registers alot better, especially on Awake and Train of Thought.

From mikeportnoy.com, posted by the man himself :
''On Friday February 25th 2005, Dream Theater wrapped up recording on their latest album. Mixing will be begin on Monday February 28th and the record will be delivered to the label in Mid-March. A release is expected for sometime around May/June through Atlantic Records.
Dream Theater began writing and recording their latest album last November at the world famous Hit Factory studios in New York City. (everybody from Michael Jackson, John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Britney Spears, U2, Mariah Carey, REM, etc. etc. have all recorded at the legendary studio)
As has been reported in the media several weeks ago, the famous recording studio is closing down upon the completion of Dream Theater's recording session.
This album will hold the distinction of being the VERY LAST album ever recorded at the Hit Factory in NYC. (the first was Stevie Wonder's "Songs In The Key Of Life") After the Dream Theater sessions ended on Friday night, the lights were turned off and the doors were locked to the world famous studio - ending an era in the music industry....''
I can't wait. And that's a pretty cool piece of history to be involved in.

No, they've said that Train Of Thought let them indulge their metal influences, and now they're taking it in another direction. It's expected to be 'more progressive' (not my words), which may mean something really fresh, hopefully not just progressive in terms of sounding like all the other prog bands. I'm pretty confident that they've pulled off something quality though.
Quebec
02-26-2005, 05:22 PM
They have always done original and quality work, so I'm not worried. I just hope that it won't be too soft, but I'm sure this is not going to happen, so it's ok
"What's it like? It's awesome. It's a little bit of everything — it's really a mixed bag. It's like classic DREAM THEATER where it's got some long songs, some short songs, some heavy songs…"

If you want the best representation of constistency - go studio album. If you want an incredible range of some of their very best songs with a few flaws - go Budokan.
Speaking of that, I've just finished watching the DVD. Disappear is an incredible song. One of my favourites by DT. Just thought I'd mention that...
Yeah, when I first heard Disappear I didn't think much of it. But when I was watching Live at Budokan and it came on, I wondered why I never really liked such a amazing song.

It's probably because it's an understated song on 6DOIT. You look at the tracklisting for the first disc and you automatically think that it's a filler tune, because of the length compared to the collosuses before it. Which is a shame, as it's my favourite song on the album.

The concept is great, and the storytelling good...but the music, I mean...they have far better songs than the stuff on SFAM.

I got some Dream Theater stuff...
I think overall they're pretty hardcore, but they're too radiofriendly to keep me interested for long.
(yes I know, they have 10 minute songs, but just because they're lengthy doesn't mean they aren't radiofriendly in sound)

The only song of theirs that is radio friendly is actually on the radio, "As I Am"
Seriously, DT stuff is generally too complex to be radio friendly.
Some of their stuff off Images and Words might be radio friendly, but generally, anything from Awake on really isn't, save "As I Am"

I agree, and
10 minute+ length does make a song radio unfriendly, there aren't many radiostations who will play that.
and they will make crappy radio-edits, who do no justice to the song
the radiochannel I listen to; arrow classic rock does play long (radio unfriendly songs),
they played the entire pink floyd 'echoes' song.
we need more radiostations like that :(

So... I've begun listening to dream theater now (about five or six weeks ago)....
I LOVE THEM!!!!!!!
I only got their two first but I thought that "when dream and day unit" was one of the best albums I’ve ever heard, no group has ever given such a great first impression as this one. Others don't seem to have the same opinion about their first album…
Does anyone else but me think that it is very underrated?

Except select tracks from Falling Into Infinity (Take Away My Pain, Anna Lee, Burning My Soul to name three).
But hey, even a relatively commercial album like FII is still an incredible album. How many other albums can you have 'poppy' songs and also have progressive masterpieces like New Millenium, Hell's Kitchen and Trial Of Tears yet still sound like the same band?
yogaguitar - WDADU has the fourth best DT song on it - Only A Matter Of Time. So of course it's good.

Not true.
My station has played unedited cuts of various Tool songs, including Lateralus at 9:24 and No Quarter at 11+ minutes.
Generally, long songs don't do well on the radio, but sometimes they do.

I have an mp3 which I am almost sure has been mis-tagged. I really like it, and I know it's Dream Theater. It's more metallish, and only slightly prog. It's been named: "As I am" with the Album set to "Train of Thought".
The problem arose when I got a tab for it, but the tab clearly was nothing like the song. No trace of my mp3 was in this tab. So, I tried downloading it again. It was completely different; it was prog and drawn out.
If you have your guitar nearby, here's my best interpretation of the main riff in the song:
Tune to CADGBE (this is wrong, but it works)
PM|-------------------------------------------------------------------------------|
C|0-0-00-0-0-00000-0-0-00-0-0-00000------0-00-------0----
A|-------------------------------------2h4h5-----2h4h5-55h4
D|-----------------------------------------------------------
If this is not enough, I'll pass the mp3 around.
Any help will be much appreciated.

No, your tab sounds nothing like the real riff. If I played what you tabbed out, it would sound absolutely nothing like "As I Am"
Can you pick out any lyrics from the song?

It is fairly clipped at the end though. Sounds a bit rough for a studio cut.

Well, that was my first plan, but, I couldn't make out anything more than a few words here and there. Anyway, the notes definitely ascend in pitch, so your tab (with pulloffs) is not for the song I have.

good
it is an awesome cd indeed.
although many people don't like the 'heavy' DT
but I don't care, I like soft and heavy DT
I like it alot. I like the heaviness, there are some cool sounding riffs in my opinion.
Like As I Am, and Honor Thy Father is cool too. Haven't really been noticing what the song names are, just leaving the whole album on repeat with my iPod whilst I play games, but a few songs (Like the two mentioned) have grabbed my attention enough to check the name.
Also, the reason I bought the album, I have a 'fetish', if you will, for instrumental tracks :)
And Stream of Consciousness definately lived up to that, I like it alot!

Check out "ytse jam", "Erotomania", "the dance of eternity" if you haven't. Obviously you should also check the Instrumedley on live at budokan. And if you have a "fetish" for instrumental tracks, you should already know about "liquid tension experiment".

Oh yeah, I've been looking for LTE albums around here, unfortunately, every store would rather stock Britney Spears etc. And I don't have a Credit Card (Nor do I live with my parents) so I can't buy the album/s. I might download some of their stuff sometime.
