Train of Thought is amazing, I remember hearing it for the first time, it completely blew me away.
I love the 2nd disc of 6DOIT, and love The Glass Prison and Disappear off the 1st disc, not so keen on the other songs however.

Misunderstood is one of my favourite DT songs. :)

i love that as well. especially that perfectly-placed pinch harmonic :smash:
to me, blind faith is the weakest track on disc 1 of turbulence, but that's not saying much because i think every track is strong.

That was for the second night special at one of the South America shows. It replaced DSoTM. /most likely redundant

So they just announced a Detroit date for the 20th and I have the day off work and a friend might be interested in going. I just need to see if my parents will let me take the car there as it is in need of new tires, but that will get put off for a while.

About James LaBrie on wiki:
In 1994, while vacationing in Cuba, Labrie had very bad food poisoning and while vomiting, he ruptured a vocal chord. Two weeks later he had to go on tour again, with his voice not strong and cracking frequently. He went to several specialists who said the damage would take a while to heal. James also had surgery before going on tour. He finally started to get his voice back in 2002 and returned to just about full power in 2005. Many critics unaware of this event have given him much criticism on live albums such as Once in a Livetime and Live Scenes From New York.

and for those that didn't know:
In 1993, he was a first-choice replacement to take over for the departed Iron Maiden vocalist, Bruce Dickinson; an offer which he declined.

Indeed...he was extremely spot on when I saw him last summer. I never knew that about him.

TOT I really like...this may sound a bit poserish, but I like it for the heaviness of it. It's got a good, almost aggressive feel to it that enhances the music even more.

He sounds fantastic on LSFNY.
I may have said this before, but The spirit carries on live is the most beautiful piece of music I have ever heard, and James' vocal intro is the best part.

Yeah, Misunderstood is ace, but I'd say The Glass Prison and Disapear are the best.

Thats pretty cool about Maiden and LaBrie, I'm surprised he turned them down. I'm glad he stayed with DT, though, what with Blaze still being great and Bruce coming back.

I actually think he's great on Live Scenes, but most of the other stuff I've heard from Five Years and stuff is pretty poor. He seems better than ever now.

Five years isn't brilliant.

I went to an amazing show last night! (San Francisco).

Root of All Evil- strong opener
Another Won- awesome song, wouldve preferred "your majesty' however
Afterlife- didnt expect that!
Take The Time- oh, man! awesomeness! didnt expect that from IAW!
Caught in a Web- good choice, wouldve liked 6:00 though
Speak to Me- i was talking to my bud saying how awesome this would be, and they played it!
Peruvian Skies (w/ Wish You Were Here and Wherever I May Roam)- wow.
Strange Deja Vu- a good choice from SFAM
Through My Words/Fatal Tragedy- i thought that was it from SFAM but they busted it out, awesome
About to Crash/Losing Time- this was the #1 song i wanted them to play, and there it was!

intermission

As I Am- another song i was wanting to see
These Walls- (needs to explanation, just plain awesome)
I Walk Beside You- heres a quality song
Sacrificed Sons- this is actually amazing live
Octavarium- it was excellent, with some wacky animations on the screen

Wait For Sleep/Learning to Live- this was better than i thought it would be. they also jammed to " La Villa Strangiato" and "Crossroads"

^ ....uhhhhhh i am going to have to STRONGLY disagree.
the full circle section is naming songs by bands that have influenced them and stuff, which is pretty clever if you ask me. and the razor's edge "a perfect sphere / colliding with our fate / this story ends where it began" is extremely poignant and goes with that whole "everything comes full circle" motif on 8vm.

but that's just me.

lyrically, does anyone else LOVE the line in voices that goes "i'm lying here in bed, swear my skin is inside out just another sunday morning...seen my diary on the newsstand, seems we've lost the truth to quicksand"

lol... I'm so far off being able to play anything even remotely Petrucci-like :p

Edit: Just wondering, why don't Petrucci and LaBrie do a sort of duel solo, where LaBrie starts it off (With his voice), and Petrucci finishes it? Watching that video, he seems to have enough control... (Something in the vein of Megadeth's Back in the Day, but of course, better :p)
I would love to see that. Or just a long Labrie vocal solo.

I'm extremely jealous of you. It sucks being a bass and trying to sing along to Dream Theater songs.
Yeah, I have a pretty weird voice, I can do bass stuff but I can scream higher than some of my female friends.

1. The Root of All Evil: The opening of the concert started on a weak note. I like this song, but James singing was poor. Meh. 6/10

2. Another Won: This song was okay, but I never really liked the really old stuff. Petrucci was great though. 6/10

3. A Fortune In Lies: James started to pick up the pace on this song. The intro was awesome to this song. Portnoy is a great showman. 8/10

4. Take the Time: This was JAW-DROPPING. James hit all the high notes perfectly. Petrucci's outro solo was spot-on. The place went nuts. 10/10

5. The Mirror: I've really been getting into 'Awake' lately, and this is one of my favorite songs. Everyone was headbanging to this riff. 10/10

6. Lie: I was suprised at how well the crowd reacted to 'Awake.' Everyone plays great on this one. Not as good as "The Mirror" though. 9/10

7. Raise the Knife: Now, I've never heard of this song before. But it was pretty good. Why isn't on 'Falling Into Infinity?' 8/10

8. Strange Deja Vu: Now we're talking. This song kicked major ***. I wished I could seen more songs from SFAM. But I love this song. 10/10

9. About to Crash (Reprise): The place went nuts when John cranked out the riff. It's a cool song and all...but, not yet worthy of a 10. 9/10

10. Losing Time: Meh, I never really cared for this song to much. Same with that whole album really. But props to James. That man can sing. 6/10

More in next post...

11. As I Am: A great way to open to the concert after intermission. Like SFAM I wish they would've played more songs from this album. 10/10

12. These Walls: James did a fantastic job singing this song. Whole band did great on this song. I love Rudess's intro. 9/10

13. I Walk Beside You: Let me just say, that this song is gay. It reminds me of U2. Would've much rather perferred "Panic Attack" or "Never Enough." 4/10

14. Sacrificed Sons: I don't care what everyone says this song is awesome. Myung and Petrucci were insane. Very emotional. 10/10

15. Octavarium: Wow. Just...wow. Everyone is top-notch on this song. Great animation too. Very, very, cool. 10/10

16. Sheep: I went crazy when they started playing this song. Long live Pink Floyd! Myung's bassline was tight. Yay for covers. 10/10

17. Wait for Sleep: Rudess and James together were great. What a combo. Once again, the place went crazy. 10/10

18. Learning to Live: I couldn't hear myself. The crowd was just so loud! "Learning to Live" was awesome. 10/10

Well, that's all. Any questions or comments?

Just got back from the Chicago show... one of the best concerts I've ever been to. Completely sold out. Near the end of Home, Portnoy goes into a drum solo. He builds it to a climax, then goes "you know, this drumset is too big for one person." Then Charlie fvcking Benante from Anthrax comes out and sits down on the other half of Mike's kit. They solo together, have a little duel, then start playing a bunch quick covers. It was one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Here's the setlist:

Root of All Evil
Another Won
Take the Time
Innocence Faded
Peruvian Skies/Wish You Were Here/Wherever I May Roam
Raise the Knife
Home/Drum Solo/Walk This Way/YYZ/6:00 (played perfectly by Charlie)/Raining Blood
---------
War Within My Head
The Test That Stumped Them All
Endless Sacrifice
I Walk Beside You
Octavarium
---------
Wait For Sleep
Learning to Live (w/ extended jam)

Kinda disappointed that the only song from Awake was Innocence Faded, and the only song from Train of Thought was Endless Sacrifice... but whatever. Amazing show.

Ok, so I saw DT on Tuesday night...and not being big on them I recognized only 2 of them. But one of those I really love, but I don't know the name. It had a piano instrumental, then vocals, then everything else, and there was lots of vocal dissonance and there were sort of "dueling" drums/guitars/keyboards. I'd say so...

I've heard from a mate, that James LaBrie is a crack head (I don't know how he knew, he just said he knew.. I don't know if that's very reliable though...)

It really wouldn't surprise me to find out Portnoy is an avid weed smoker.

Edit: My dreams of discovering Portnoy's secret life have been crushed. Thanks heaps Arpanet :(

Arpanet

mary jane ... marijuana?

Mmmmm... no. The samples in "6:00" are from a film version of "The Dead," a short story by James Joyce. Mary Jane is the name of one of the characters. The song is written by Kevin Moore, and it's about many things - but marijuana definitely isn't one of them. The sample goes like this:

"Six o'clock on a Christmas morning..."

"And for what?"
"Well, isn't it for the honor of God, Aunt Kate?"
"I know all about the honor of God, Mary Jane."

And if you can't get into Awake, I dunno what to tell you... it definitely grew on me over time though. "Caught in a Web" was the first track that I really liked. But at this point, I think "Voices" is the best song ever. Literally.

Good man. I love the vocals on 'Awake'. I got some videos off dt-x . com of them in the studio for SFAM. Ruddess plays some awsome little tunes. "I'm having a wonderful time playing music for my friends"...

Awake was definately the hardest album to get into for me. I bought it for somewhere around $10CDN right when I was getting into DT(I only had ToT and SFAM at this time). When I came home I put it on listened all the way through and said to myself "No wonder this was only $10". I then put it on the shelf for a couple months, and later picked it up, put it in and listened.

It clicked. Now it's my favourite DT album.

"We regret to announce that we've been forced to cancel tomorrows show in Detroit.

James is not feeling well and we fear that by doing a 4th show in a row, he'll push himself over the edge and endanger the remaining shows on the tour (and most importantly, the DVD shoot in NYC in 2 weeks)

We are truly sorry to disappoint all of our great fans in Detroit and to have gotten their hopes up (as we only confirmed this show a few weeks ago).
We had hoped to pull off 4 in a row (which we normally never do on an "Evening With" tour), but it doesn't seem meant to be this time....

The local promoter will announce details on refunds soon...

DT"

Why don't they just play without him? I think I'd enjoy some of the songs a little more that way...

Another thing. Does anyone think that James' voice is too high and annoying live? I think that it has this annoying tone to it that i dont like. In the studio his voice sounds great but i dont know if its due to editing.

i absolutely love that song.

i'm a huge fan of DT's melower stuff like spirit carries on, goodnight kiss, through her eyes (it, more than spirit carries on gets me teary) and disappear.
best line = "i gave you my hand and said it's OK letting go time to leave here"
it's packed w/ emotion live...i think the song is better live than the album version.

EDIT: oh and tails, your icon is the greatest. nextdoornikki is probably my favorite model :]

Live At The Budokan

or

Live In Tokyo / 5 Years In A LIVETime?

Which DVD shall I buy?

I own the CD for Budokan and the Live IN Tokyo/5 Years in a LiveTime DVD, so I can't give you first hand comparisons for camera work or quality. But I have scene several parts of Budokan online, and I can safely say its a superbly produced DVD. On the other hand, Tokyo/5 Years has tons of rare stuff you wouldn't hear them play any more.

The first disk is a bit poorly put together, with clips of the band on tour intercutting the actual concert footage (although some of these clips are actually quite funny.) The performance itself is amazing, even if LaBrie screws up a bit. There's superb performances of Surrounded, Wait For Sleep, To Live Forever, A Fortune in Lies, and Take the Time. And most amazing of all, Myung crosses over to stage left.

The second disk also has some really great stuff, with great performances from their "unplugged" fanclub show in '98, their Awake World Tour in '94, their "uncovered" fan club show in '95 (where the covers on A Change of Seasons came from - the singer from Napalm Death, Steve Hogarth and Steve Rothary of Marillion, and Steve Howe guest on it) and the show were Once in a LiveTime was recorded (the version of Peruvian Skies is awsome.)

Sorry about the long winded post...
