My guess is a standard song from every album like they've done on all the shows this tour from Majesty Demo ----->ToT
Something like:
The Glass Prison
(ToT song)
Another Won
A Fortune in Lies
UAGM
Caught in a Web
Lines in the Sand/Hell's Kitchen (heh I wish)
The Spirit Carries On
Losing Time/Grand Finale
----------
Octavarium(album)

...Which?
In order of greatness:
1. Metropolis Scenes from a Memory
1. Awake
1. Images and Words
1. 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence
1. Train of Thought
2. Ocatavarium
3. When Dream and Day Unite
4. Falling into Infinity
All the ones with the number 1 are tied for first (i cant decide). Since you like Opeth, I would say Train of Though.

Question; Gonna buy DT Album...
...Which?
All depends on what type of DT fan you are? There are two main divisions: the metal enthusiasts and everyone else.
If you are looking for awesome riffs, go for 6DOIT, Train of Though, Octavarium. If you're looking for pure DT bliss (including countless musical orgasms), go for Image and Words, Awake, WDADU or Falling into infinity.
I recommend Images and Words as a first album. It consists of various metally bits (mainly Metropolis), tonnes of great solos, tonnes of highly inspirational moments (Learning to live!!!), and generally each song is a song of its own.

so i did research on the recent asian setlists and i've concluded that their NA setlist will go something like this if it follows a general pattern:
set 1:
1) The Root Of All Evil
2) Another Won/Never Enough/Panic Attack
3) A Fortune In Lies
4) Under A Glass Moon
5) Caught In A Web
6) Peruvian Skies
7) Strange Deja Vu/Fatal Tragedy
8) Solitary Shell
9) About To Crash (Reprise)
10) Losing Time/Grand Finale
~~~~intermission~~~~
1) The Glass Prison (As I Am)
2) Endless Sacrifice
3) I Walk Beside You
4) Sacrificed Sons
5) Octavarium
~~~Encore~~~
1) Pull Me Under/Metropolis Pt. 1
OR
1) The Spirit Carries On/Learning To Live

I agree that charlie aint that great, but the only thing Labrie destroys is the song. His vibrato is so wide it goes out of tune. Reminds me of those old ladys you'd sit next to in church as a kid. When he has to go high he starts sounding like a castrated elmer fudd replacing his r's with w's. He's so loud in the mix he overpowers everything. They need to fire Labrie and put Sebastian Bach in there. Ever hear the Jacob's Ladder from the Rush tribute Working Man cd? He could totally do prog metal.

A lot of people knock Labries voice, but I think its awesome. It can sometimes be a little shakey, but on the whole I think his voice is great live. I don't see how anyone can honestly say they would prefer DT to have kept Dominici.

I think LaBrie doesn't suit WDADU stuff but he doesn't destroy the songs. And I love it when he sings high, it's just awesome, I wish I could do that.
And Dominici really let himself go...

I do think if Labrie had been in the band during the writing of WDADU it would have been a much better album. The way in which Dominici sings some of the songs I don't really like at all. For example Only A Matter Of Time, I think its one of the best songs on the album, but I don't like the way the vocals are sung during the verses, the lines contain too many words and are sung too high.

It wasn't his vibrato going out of tune that got me so much as when he tried for some of the high notes but couldn't quite make it so he just ended up terribly flat. "As a child, I thought I could live..." No James, you can't hit that note anymore.

Woo, first post in the DT thread.
Ok, so here goes...
I've never been big on DT, I just can't force myself to like LaBrie's vocals. LTE is pretty good though admittedly the wankishness of both bands does edge on me after a lot of listening.
That said, I got my mom into DT awhile ago because I knew she'd like it, and she does, she has all their CDs now. So my parents decided to take the whole family (minus the little one because the show is 16+) to see DT live while I'm home for Spring Break. I love shows and I know I will enjoy it regardless, but for those who have been, what can I expect from it? WIll it be really good? What will they play (so I can d/l and familiarize myself a little better)? Any good or bad concert experiences with them? It's like 2+ hours of just them so it'll be quite the interesting show I hope.

Don't expect them to interact with the crowd too much...they somewhat just stand there and play their instruments. And move occasionally. That's about it.
However, if you know a lot of their songs by heart, they do play them spot on, and the effect is immense, as many of their songs have that epic feel to them.
They'd be touring in lieu of Octavarium, I'm assuming, so it would be good to familiarize yourself with that.

Dude, when you get there, see if there's any empty seats in rows up ahead. When the band starts playing, if they're still empty, fill them! That's how I got from General Admission to row G. If someone comes for the seats just say "oh, I thought these were mine/ours" and move on to some other empty seats.
I can play Silent Man. No shred in that :p

You can guarantee quite a few from Octavarium, they have usually been opening with TROA. They likely will close the set with either Pull Me Under, Metropolis pt.1 or Learning to Live. The set changes every night, but there'll be at least one song from each album.
And I have to say they are the best live band I've ever seen. While they might not run around the stage, the music more then makes up for it, and they usually have a pretty cool video show as well.

Yeah, they'll play alot of stuff from 8VM and then they'll usually encorewith an I&W track and a couple of others or maybe just Octavarium or a change of seasons.
They tend to close with The spirit carries on, in the name of God or similar.

Three or four encore tracks or one epic :) for encores
It all depends on what they want to do, all the sets are so varied!
That was just going on what I was hearing about the recent tour.

the best jam on the album is the end of scarred, I wish DT played more stuff like that, It a perfect jam. I like scarred, I didn't like the production as much as their later work, but I liked most of the songs, but I still hate labries singing. 6:00 part thing I agree is dumb. Almost as dumb as labrie saying, 'and you can tell your stepfather I said so' with the same tone most people say '**** off'. kinda weak imo.

Hm, as to the songs on Awake, I'd have to rank the top five like this:
1. Space Dye Vest
2. Scarred
3. Erotomania
4. Voices
5. Lifting Shadows Off a Dream
The Silent Man would be a close one after Lifting Shadows.
I found some great videos on Youtube, heres one of them playing Under a Glass Moon (I think its from the Images and Words in Tokyo DVD.) LaBrie kind of destroys the song with some near inhuman shreiks, but the rest of the band owns especially Petrucci.

Awake might be my second favorite Dream Theater album now. Images and Words will forever be number one, but Awake is giving Scenes From a Memory some serious compitition.
Holy crap, I checked out the Images and Words Live in Tokyo/Five Years in a LiveTime DVD and I've decided I absolutely must get it. After seeing two videos from the Live in Tokyo part, I'm convinced that's a good buy. And then theres the second disk with an awsome setlist, and all the covers, and guest apearences from Steve Howe and two guys from Marillion.
I also found some more videos on Youtube:

All of a sudden, this guy that I know (coincidentally, the boyfriend of this girl that I used to be friends with and now never speak to) asks me to be the fourth on a road trip to Chicago to see them.
