I do...

I also remember listening to surrounded over and over again.
The vocals at the end still are one of my favourite vocal parts to any song ever.

Yeh, it's the perfect amount of cheese and wankery as well as your standard DT kick *** moments. mmm... bass solo.

Images and Words is definitely DT's greatest album (at the moment). LEARNING TO LIVE!!! I'd go to bed with that song over any attractive female any day.

anyone who accuses DT of wanking too much is probably just jealous :naughty:
jk. sometimes it is excessive. like the last minute of this dying soul. it's like. wtf. you can shred 16th notes for an entire minute at 200+ bpm but it sounds like cow poo.

And as for the UAGM debate, I think it is only trumped on I&W by Learning to Live and Metropolis Pt. 1.

Ok, i just recently signed up ibn this forum and its been great and this is the exact thread ive beebn looking for. Dream Theater are ****ing ridiculous. I've been playing bass for just a little over 5 years now and listening to DT for about 1 and a bit. Since jumping into this kind of music my playing ability has skyrocketed. I saw then in montreal when they were on the TOT tour with Yes and i actually got to meet them aftrewards! I brought my bass all the way over to get it signed!! Ive now been playing drums for 6 months and portnoy was actually the one who inspired me to start. :thumb:
Hmm, my first DT song... i belive it was Fatal Tragedy (awesome song) that my amazing guitarist friend showed me and at first i must say i was a little skeptical. But once i got into them there's no turning back.
My fovorite album is defenitly Images and Words, tons of great tunes.
When it comes to there powerful writing theres no comparision, The way they manipulate each riff and do it melodically. They're great.
The one thing i can't stand is someone who sais that mike portnoy is a show off. He does have a ridiculously large kit but tell me you wouldnt play that over a 4 peice... and if you do i dont believe you.
ANY WAYS. thats my rant for now.

I think it sounds awesome. DT songs can have incredibly techinical and fast solos, but they all sound amazing, maybe with the exception of some of JR's on ToT where hes just trying to sound like a guitar.

It took me a long time to actually hear the Muse song that everyone was comparing "Never Enough" to, but yeah, it's a complete and utter ripoff of form, style, and everything. Considering Octavarium was already a disappointment, that just moved it lower.

Personally, Dream Theater were better when they were paying tribute to Rush and Yes instead of blatantly ripping off Tool, Metallica, and Muse on every album. They are hard up on originality, big-time.

So I thought maybe some of you on here could help me out.
At my college I'm a volunteer DJ for the student-run free-format radio station. Periodically throughout the semester, we could sign up for "artist features" where we basically play one artist and tell the listening audience a little about the artist.
So of course I jumped on one and picked Dream Theater. Each artist feature show is an hour and a half long, which as you can imagine is proving to be a challenge with Dream Theater. I had the concept of possibly doing one song from each of DT's full-length with the exception of WDADU (because I don't like it and don't officially own it) and one for each dist of 6DOIT. I was wondering what you guys thought of this idea, and if you like it what songs would you recommend I play. If you want to suggest something, I'm not looking for single-song suggestions, I'm looking for entire playlist suggestions (keep in mind I have an hour and a half and I have to talk about the significant events with the band in between each song). Thanks in advance anyone who tries to take this on.
Btw, I have my own playlist already selected, but I'm wondering what you all think and I might alter mine a little based on what you say.

It was the thing he plays right at the start of it, on his red pad thing. It lasts about 3 minutes on the album but it must have gone on for about 10 minutes live.
Heh, I thought it was pretty cool. Sounded a lot better than the album version imo.

What songs you want to the names of? All of them in order they're played on the video?

As I am
Honor Thy Father
Can't tell what the next one is, it's just drums
Endless Sacrifice
Honor Thy Father again
Stream Of Conciousness
Not completely sure on the last one. Might be in The Name of God.

What's your playlist?

It would probably be better if we commented on yours then 20 people making lists.

Good idea.

Images & Words - either Metropolis Pt. 1 or Under a Glass Moon
Awake - Scarred
Falling Into Infinity - New Millennium or Lines in the Sand or Trial of Tears
Metropolis Pt. 2 - Fatal Tragedy or Beyond This Life or Dance of Eternity
6DOIT Disc 1 - The Glass Prison
6DOIT Disc 2 - either War Inside My Head + TTTSTA or just TTTSTA
Train of Thought - This Dying Soul
Octavarium - TROAE or Panic Attack

With the right (or rather wrong) combination of these songs it brings it to right around an hour and a half, which sucks because I need time for talking about the band too and probably station programming. What do you all think?

Mine would have to be.
When Dream And Day Unite: Status Seeker, YTSE Jam.
Images And Words: Learning to Live, Metropolis.
Awake: Voices, 6:00.
Change of Seasons
Scenes From a Memory: The whole record... :( Like in Roseland.
Six Degrees: The Glass Prison, Misunderstood, War Inside My Head
ToT: ITNOG, Endless Sacrifice
Octavarium: Panic Attack, Root Of All Evil, Octavarium, Sacrificed Sons.
I honestly would break down if I ever saw them playing a set resembling this.
I really like 8VM, it's one of my favourites, actually.

Not as much as SFAM or I&W, But I really do like it.
I'm going to have to agree with that. Except I would choose it over Awake.
8VM is amazing, and is like cross between I&W and the First Disc of SDOIT. Which to me, is pretty perfect. Except for an entire album sounding like SFAM again. Which would be amazing.

No, the point of this is that I'm doing an artist feature on DT for my college radio station. The time limit I have is an hour and a half, hence why I'm not playing CoS or 8VM. I made that post because those are the songs I'm thinking about playing and I was wanting some constructive input about what you all thought.

Deth-Thank you for your post, I appreciate it. I have to say I'm not a fan of Lifting Shadows Off a Dream and that as good as Endless Sacrifice is that I like the fast paced-ness of This Dying Soul. Thank you for your input though, I'm definitely taking it into consideration.

Hey, I'm starting to get into Dream Theater, and I was wondering what you guys thought would be a good album to start with. I have an iTunes gift certificate so I'm probably going to buy one of their albums from there.

edit:
ok, basically off itunes I can buy three of their albums:
Live at Budokan
Train of Thought
Octavarium

I can also buy Metropolis, Once in a Livetime, or Awake, but those three are only "partial" albums so I can only buy the songs individually and not all the songs are available, so I'd rather not go that direction. So out of the first three mentioned, which is probably the best?

i personally like Octavarium more than ToT. But Train Of Thought has great songs like Stream Of Conciousness. But id go for live at Budokan. It has songs from both albums. And songs that aren't from either so it gives you a feel for the band. And its live!

I&W: under a glass moon. short (relatively), progressive, very DT-defining. plus a guitar solo that will blow the pants and socks off of everyone who hears it. good way to open.
awake: go with lie. or the mirror. gives you contrast with UAGM. OR SPACE-DYE VEST :naughty:

I was listening to "Instrumedley" and, no joke, thinking to myself that I wish I had known which song that was on the video so I could have bought the album with it on there... and all of a sudden it's the last 1:30 of Instrumedley and it's like... F*CK YEAH.

Rush is a too obvious band for them to cover, so it won't be that.

It's not that obvious a choice at this point, considering the band has nearly purged all traces of Rush's sound and style from their own. I think they could benefit from covering a group that actually requires subtlety and dynamics instead of "BRAAWR! METAL!" -type groups all of the time.

EDIT: And I really don't think covering Tool would be a good idea.

Petrucci ≠ Jones
LaBrie definitely ≠ Keenan

You do realise the last band they covered was Pink Floyd?

Yeah, they named it "Octavarium." :p

EDIT: What I meant was more of a subtle and dynamic use of the same skills that Dream Theater values: Rush has all the odd time, the solos, the instrumental skill DT has but they do it in less obvious ways. Pink Floyd does not make anywhere near the same kind of music DT does.

That version of Money wasn't that bad...Portnoy looks laughably relaxed behind the kit, which is only to be expected, really. I think that Dream Theater covering Tool would be interesting, but wouldn't be that good an idea. Assuming they fitted in Jordan Rudess, then I don't really think his style would suit covers of Tool. Obviously he could do it if he wanted to (all of the band could), but I'd far rather see them try another band rather than Tool, pretty much. Seeing them do Rush would be pretty neat.

I still hold out for Rush or Yes. Both seem to have left the biggest imprint on the band, and would be interesting to see them tackle. Plus, it would definitly be a challenge for them. Seeing them to some King Crimson wouldn't be to bad, either.

Very cool if you ask me, I can't wait to hear it, especially hearing LaBrie sing Child in Time.

Wow! That's awesome. I freakin' love Deep Purple and have always wanted to see DT cover them. I liked their cover of "Perfect Strangers."

How would you do that in an all seated gig? I'm pretty sure the NY show is gonna be sold out.
Well apparently the Astoria sold out too but there were seats empty. When people turned up for them we went "oh sorry, thought these were our seats" and moved to some other vacant ones.

So are there going to be any more dates between Feb and Apr, since their last gig will be in NY?

I soooooooooo want to go to a DT concert, but the closest they have ever came to New Brunswick was Toronto, 18 hours away, and I almost got my mom to let me go (it was the Gigantatour) but then she said no when I thought I had her lol. But someday I will see them...............someday

I love In The Name Of God. BTW my band is learning As I Am for our first song that we can play together and maybe one day a cover song (if we do it good). But i havent learned the drum solo yet(if i ever do) and our guitarist hasnt learnt the solo(if he ever does). i thought it was relevant.
