I was just told that it was good, but not as good as Budokon (which i own). I was actually told this by several friends who have been into DT since the mid 90's, so I value their opinion. Whenever they tell me something is great, it usually is, so I figured why would this be different.

i bought I&W after downloading a couple of DT's songs off progarchives.com. i remember listening to it on the way home, and wondering why pull me under cut out at the end, but then the batteries in my diskman ran out halfway through another day. i thought it was odd at first, having never listened to much music with keyboards before, especially the jingle bells in metropolis, but i liked it after a while, and then bought SFAM a few weeks later.

^ very detailed.

ummm...i had a couple DT songs through download like pull me under, another day, home, caught in a web. i really liked them, so i bouthg 8vm the day it came out, and i loved every song on there except these walls, i walk beside you. it didn't leave my CD player for several weeks. in fact, when i saw them on gigantour, 8vm songs were the only ones i really knew, so i had no idea what they were playing ><

but now that i have every CD but the live ones and WDADU, i really wanna see em live again. this time, i'll know what's going on :]

scenesfromatheater
12-21-2005, 07:24 PM
Yeah, I know all there songs now so it'd be cool to see them live again. I saw them on the 8V tour. Still, they played nearly the whole album and the set was awful because of that, they didn't play much of the older stuff like I&W and Awake. I would have enjoyed more stuff off FII aswell but they played loads of boring 8V instead. 8V was the only good song they played off the album apart from TROAE which was an awsome opener.

Don't get me wrong i love dream theater!! But they'd be so much better with a different vocalist and better lyrics, their vocalist and lyrics are their downfall. I mean the drumming and guitar work is spectacular to say the least

Yea i have to agree, Dt is up there with my fav bands, but when James LaBrie starts singing, its hard to sit through it sometimes
Although its not thats hes a bad singer, far from it, he hits the notes quite well actually. His singing voice, however, is extremely annoying. And yea, their lyrics are lacking, but i spose all in all its what makes dream theater, along with the singer, unique. Without them they would sound completely different.

C'mon, Awake sucks due to Labrie's try hard metal growling. STick to the high notes!

i disagree 100%.

i think his vocals on songs like "lie" are amazing. but that's just my opinion.

and to whoever asked what 8vm meant...

"Looking at the history of the word Octavarium reveals very little. The only historical record of it is a historical book in the Vatican called the Octavarium Romanum. It consists mainly of lessons regarding various Catholic feasts. Notable in its history, however, is many 5's and 8's. The book was first mentioned underthe pontification of Sixtus V (1585-1590) (Sixtus the FIFTH in FIFTEEN EIGHTY FIVE) and then was not mentioned again until it was brought up under Clement VIII (1592-1605) (that's Clement the EIGHTH)."

from dtfaq.com
the #5 is significant because there's 5 members in the band, and 8 total including past members. plus, the whole octave business.

actually, just check out http://dt.spatang.com/octavarium.php

the beginning of the root of all evil is also the end of in the name of god. just like the beginning of as i am is the end of six degrees of inner turbulence. and i think if i remember correctly the beginning of the glass prison is the end of finally free.

as for octavarium being epic, so was a change of seasons. and six degrees of inner turbulence. and i think the ending part of in the name of god is the most epic thing dream theater has ever written.

Pull Me Under was the song that got me into DT. That chorus and riffage is very hard to resist. :p

Ditto, looking back on it it's certainly not the greatest on I&W but one of DT's funnest songs!

the first time i heard dream theaterr was when i bought "scenes from a memory" i listened to it, and heard "close you eyes and as i count to 10 you will go to a more relaxed state of mind" i thought "what the hell is this?!?!?!?" and thought it was gonna suck ***. but then i listened to strange deja vu and <3'd them instantly.

Oww I found the official thread :D

I Was woundering if anyone could suggest the next DT album I get, I've only been listening to them recently. (I'm a drummer and someone told me about Mike Portnoy and sent me As I Am so I therefore brought the whole of Train of Thought.) I also got Images and Words after hearing Take the Time.

So can anyone suggest the next one I should get?

8vm is NOT their last CD. portnoy officially stated they're up for more albums.

would be sad if they closed their career with a mediocre-ish album like 8vm.

has anyone else ever listened to the commentary on 5YIALT? portnoy says during the unplugged section that he was going to just quit the band once that tour was over, but then they brought jordan into the band and kept on going. i'd never even heard of this before, but it does mean that DT could have ended with FII as their last album.

Weird. I'm glad they kept going.
You think if Portnoy quit DT he would've carried on with LTE?

Heh, I know what you mean. My old guitar teacher showed me that song and I was just amazed, then he copied I&W for me. They were the first progressive band that I really listened to.

Portnoy drums on so many albums I'm sure he would have found things to keep him busy (LTE, Transatlantic, OSI etc).
It wouldn't have surprised me if the band had finished if they didn't get JR to replace Sherinian, the band were seriously heading downhill.

I find that odd with Portnoy.
I mean, since he's really the leader, spokesperson and main conceptualist for the band, it would be difficult to see DT without him.

I don't think they would have continued. He's said somewhere where basically the band almost broke up after FII due to all the bull**** the record company made them go through during that period.

it wasn't just the record company ****, he said that dream theater was becoming somewhat of a joke band at that point. all the nightmare cinema and nicky lemons and the migraines stuff.

Yeah I watched it with commentary about a week ago. He blames everything basically on the record label. Most of the album was cut down because of the producer cause there label didn't let them produce it themselves. Also, all the songs written on FII by Portnoy are about the record label, E.g You Not Me, New Millenium, Burning My Soul, Take Away My Pain.

Their tours had better have better sets than the 8V tour, they played most of the album and probably the worst two songs off the best two albums (Under a Glass Moon and Caught in a Web)

to be honest take the time has never done much for me.

when i first got images and words another day and under a glass moon were my favorites. now the only two songs that i don't absolutely love are pull me under and take the time. wait for sleep/learning to live is the only one of the others that really jumps out as my favorite.
