Some of AJFA is good, and I like most of Metallica's instrumentals a lot, as well as some songs from their first four albums, but over all I'd say they're one of the most overrated bands ever. Tons of metal bands are leagues above them, and don't get half as much attention.

8vm is the only album they used an actual orchestra correct?
i swear there are some parts in songs like 6DOIT (overture especially) and vacant (the cello) where the strings sound authentic. i mean, i know technology is awesome, but no technology can truly emulate the tone and variation in vibrato speed/color.

Im on my third iPod. I guess Im just unlucky. The first one got fried during a thunder storm (it was charging while it slept). Not apple's fault, but the warranty was up so I had to buy a new one. The second one just stopped working and Apple said the couldnt fix it again. Im on my third and about a month after getting it, I heard that the Zen is much better.

hollow years is kinda...anticlimactic to me. good song and all the girls i've introduced it to love it to death, but there doesn't seem to be a high point in the song. it's just kinda flat all the way through.

in that sense, i much prefer songs like goodnight kiss, answer lies within, space-dye vest, anna lee, another day for their ballad-y stuff.

Other faves are Trial of Tears...(sounds much better than on Budokan, recorded), Hollow Years, Peruvian Skies, Hell's Kitchen, Burning My Soul and New Millenium. Basically the whole album except You Not Me, Just Let Breath, Lines in The Sand and Anna Lee...I just find them not that interesting.

Six Degrees, I enjoy the second disc more, I love listening to the whole of 6DOIT the song. Overture sounds really cool with the orchestra and what not. Would be cool to see DT do some shows with an orchestra. TGP is my fave song off Disc 1.

Thats what I've heard, it sounds really good.

So, as to FII, I find most of it horribly cheesy, unispired, and the fault of a greedy record company. Lines in the Sand has an awesome solo, though, and Hell's Kitchen is a great instrumental. the opening part to that solo makes me cringe every time i hear it. for starters, his tone is just aweful. it amazes me how he can get such a terrible sound to come out of such amazing equipment. and then, as you said, the playing can only be described as pure wankage.

just browsing google video on happened upon a couple interesting vids. Just ignore this post if you seen em,

this one (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6147656209173866408&q=liquid+tension+experiment) is LTE playing all of Acid Rain pretty cool pettrucci's got his black and white 7 stringer out.

this one (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2109943381931383238&q=liquid+tension+experiment) you might have seen in the liquid drum theater, but I included for those who hadn't

and this one (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3259476426215369355&q=liquid+tension+experiment) is some high school kids playing paradigm shift at a high school talent show. I have heard worse. an A for effort.
All of those kids have chops. The guitarist has excellent tone though, and great control. Cool.

Notice that they don't have a keyboard player!

those kids playing paradigm shift make me sad...wish i had chops like that :upset:

speaking of which, what DT songs can y'all play and on what instrument?
as for me, i can play on guitar: as i am (minus solo), another day, goodnight kiss + solitary shell, home (minus solo), finally free, through her eyes :], fatal tragedy (minus solo), overture 1928, in the name of god (minus solo), octavarium (minus shred solo), sacrificed sons, root of all evil, answer lies within.

if you think about it, it's really not that impressive :p
Better than me I guess. I can play A Fortune in Lies (minus solo), Status Seeker, YTSE Jam (solo not so great), Afterlife(minus solo), Silent Man, Erotomania (minus solo), Another Day (minus that little bit where john just has to shred), Beyond This Life (minus solo), As I am (minus solo), Octavarium (minus fast solo) and SOC (minus fast solo).
Still pretty decent seeing I've only been playing a year and a half.

I play guitar, I can't remember what songs I can play all the way through...ah yes, I can play The Silent Man :naughty: .

Whenever I learn songs I never learn them all the way through cause I can't be bothered really.

Cool, loads more people posting in this thread now, always nice to see:thumb: .

powertabs?

you will be changed. MX looks like child's play compared to powertabs.
there's a program you gotta dl, but it's worth it. the new DT tabs are pretty much spot on and check out some of the LTE tabs as well. people are amazing.

and sometimes it's more fun to listen to the powertabs than the actual song :naughty:

Anyone seen G3 live in Tokyo? Kicks as$!

yea i own it.
petrucci kinda sounded...not as refined as vai or satch.
he really needed another guitarrist to back him up on rhythm.

i dont like the tokyo one as much as some others, because the players seem to be locked into their playing grids and do the same tricks over and over. satch does that gay whammy squeal up and plays fast legato, vai just wanks on the bar, and petrucci just plays box patterns and scales up and down.
that said, i love em

I have Guitar Pro 5. In all honesty I prefer Powertabs, I find it easier to follow and I like the sounds better. GP5's distorted guitar sounds like a blur of notes coming from an ice cream truck.

You could always view bass tabs. You have to click the bass clef.
I find GP really hard to use. Although Powertabs doesn't have drums unless you have a program to make them.

powertabs, you can see guitar, bass, keys, other instruments written out for guitar. and yes it's in MIDI. drums can be added in w/ a separate program.

I think Labries vocals on the covers are some of the best live vocals I've heard from him.
