i listen to stuff from Piosin all the way to Judas Priest...
my favorite 'area' is kind of in between (queensrych, iron maiden, skid row, tesla, whitesnake)
would i like dream theater? is it like 'rapsody'? i do enjoy songs like 'rage of the titans' etc
DT are not even close to what Rhapsody does, and aren't as cheesy as them lol. They don't sing about kings and lord of the rings and don't have a power metal vibe going on (not saying power metal or rhapsody, I actually like power metal and Rhapsody).
But you might enjoy DT for their skill and some songs, not sure if you will enjoy their composition though compared to rhapsody and the other bands you mentioned.

I have a question for you. I've already posted it, but only 1 person answered it, so here it is: Which Mike Portnoy's drum kit is your favourite?
The Siamese monster : http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v618/heartwork_quebec/sspec.gif
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v618/heartwork_quebec/siamesemonster.jpgThis. It's MP's current Drum kit.
The purple monster: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v618/heartwork_quebec/kit2.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v618/heartwork_quebec/puple.jpg
MP used this one for FII, SFAM and for touring.
The transatlantic kit: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v618/heartwork_quebec/tasetup.jpg
The drum kit that MP used for various side projects.
The awake kit: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v618/heartwork_quebec/mapex2.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v618/heartwork_quebec/iwdrums.jpg
This was MP'S kit for Awake and ACOS. It's now retired in MP's basement.
My vote goes to the awake kit. The colors are cool and its not too big. I really love the siamese monster but it's getting ridiculously big.

It's hard for me to believe that he actually uses every drum and cymbal on the Siamese monster kit. There are like 400 little cymbals on that thing. Oh well, he kicks *** and I'm not a drummer.

I reckon his LTE kit is the best. It's small(er) simple, and its got the important stuff.

More room to explore and be creative on bigger kits, just like having more strings on a bass :-D My fav DT songs are Take The Time, Metropolis pt1, The Glass Prison, Strange Deja Vu, Fatal Tragedy, Blind Faith, and Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulance

It's ok to have a big kit, But he just goes overboard. it's useless having more things in your kit than you can hit in an entire album. And the siamese monster is just him taking advantage of endoursements. Lucky bastard :P LTE still best kit, there's enough to be creative, enough to explore, Dont need a kit much bigger than that.

It's one thing to have a big set, another thing to have a big set and be able to play it. There's no use in having a huge set and playing a couple toms, hi-hat, snare, bass, and a couple cymbals. He moves all around it. Look at Neil Peart, his set's humongous but he uses everything for his unique sounds. Same with Terry Bozzio and his chromatic toms (**** him for bein so good, lol), he uses em and it sounds awesome.

As a drummer, i'd personally go for a Purple Monster, but with a few subtractions, like:
- the stacked splash/bell on the far right
- the gong bass drum
- the percussion table (although useful, but i wouldn't use it everyday)
- the crotales
- the 18"china on the far left
- the 32" thundersheet
- (even) the two timbalitos
 There.. That should make for a "decent"-sized kit, with stuff you could use constantly (other that hi-hats, bass/snare, ride and crash :D )

why so many drums?
as a drummer, i prefer five piece kits, one high tom, two floors, snare and a bass. Then two crashes, and nice big ride (A custom ping probably) and some pretty beasty hats.
im getting live at the budakon (sp?) for christmas, i have never heard any DT, but am into alot of Prog and Power metal, so is it an ok place to start?

Yeah, this DVD has a nice variation of songs although their aren't enough songs from Awake and SFAM. Instrumedley's a great mix of DT's instrumental work and their are calm and heavy songs. I guess it'S a good start. :thumb:

I never really listened to the song "Scarred" before because it was just too long and I didn't feel like it. Now that I have it's probably my favorite off of Awake :D

The album is an opera so to help tell the story there are a few skits in the songs But it's mostly within the songs that the story is told.
If you get the live DVD "Scenes From New York" they show the skits on a screen. Very cool. There are really only a few.

I'll do my best to give you some "valuable information". First of all, it is definitely worth buying, and I'm fairly certain you can find it for cheap. The first disc chronicles a show done in Tokyo after the release of Images and Words. The second disc takes you from the Awake days through Falling Into Infinity. Both discs have commentaries by the band and are both very entertaining. I would recommend buying this 2-disc set in addition to all Dream Theater merchandise!

Have you people lost you minds? Dream Theater is one of the greatest bands of our time. You a$$'s are just a bunch of spoiled pansies and want more from these musical masters. John Petrucci is one of the greatest guitar players. Period. He has intense speed on his guitar that is unmatched in any I've seen. Jordan Rudess, how DARE you criticize him. This man was born a child piano prodige, and is unsurpassed by ANY rock keyboardist to date. John Myung is never given a huge solo within which to shine, but can keep up with Petrucci on the fast melody licks. Mike Portnoy is revered as a drum god, and is the youngest drummer to be admitted into the Drumming Hall of Fame(or something like that). I read that some thought that James LaBrie's vocals sucked? That pothead needs to f*cking sober up, his singing is insane!! You listen to gritty Cobaine lyrics, don't you? (@$$) Wake up ladies, we are in the presence of greatness, and we should enjoy it before it fades.
I very much agree, Dream Theater are in my opinion, by far the most technically and musically gifted band in the world. However, I would just like to point out that although John Myung's lack of bass solo's is a crying shame, you said he is never given one, he is given the occasional. The Dance of Eternity (3:15 or so) and Metropolis Part One (5:30 or so) are some examples that stick out where JM shows off his awesome bass skills.

I'm pretty sure that's not what he meant. If it is, I'd have to agree with you about having different taste.
I don't care if someone doesn't like my favorite band (Tool or DT) but if they are just moronic about it, that's when I can't stand it.
It's one thing to say "I don't like this band because of their style" or "I don't like that genre too much" etc. But to be like "there gay" or something utterly stupid like that is what we fans can't stand.

My first DT CD was LSFNY, aand for only £10! I was blown away by the sheer power of the band, and the technical and creative abilities of each member. My first song was The Dance Of Eternity, which again, just blew me away.
Now a few years later, I own all their albums and EP's and receiveed the Live At Budokan DVD yesterday for Christmas from my best friend. It is possibly the best live DVD I have ever seen, I bet they are truly amazing live. I love how it has a load of special features too, especially with Jordan Rudess in them!!!

Have you seen Live at Budokan? Unless you have, don't argue it with me. He doesn't tap on As I Am, but does do the harmonic intro.
I've seen them live
Not a bass tap on the ToT album.
I have ToT, I&W and Live scenes from NY
I used to love them, but I don't listen to them so much anymore, they lack songwriting skills and make up for it in technicallity, which I'm not digging at the moment.

Well it all depends on what sound you wanna start with. Dream Theater dances around with sounds (like every progressive band) If you wanna hear the real heavy side of Dream Theater, pick up Train Of Thought, if you wanna hear the real technical side, pick up Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence, if your'e into eighties metal with all that high pitched squeling, pick up Dream Theater's debut album- When Dream And Day Unite, if you wanna hear the all around thing, pick up A Change Of Seasons (EP), If you wanna hear heave with some strong keyboard wizidry, pick up Awake, if you wanna hear eighties metal ,mixed with technical sounds and odd- timesignature filled tunes, pick up Images And Words, the debut album with current singer James LaBrie. The album I started out with was Scenes From A Memory- a concept album wich connects with a song on Images And Words. Scenes From A Memory is FILLED with trure keyboard wizidry, done by current keyboard player Jordan Rudess. It also features some heavy tunes, some quite mellow tunes and not quite so technical as Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence or Images And Words. Hope that helped.

When Dreams And Day Unite is their first cd, which dosen't feature James Labrie but is still a powerful album with some great songs (YTES Jam) Images has more of their 80's style in their, but has some very good songs (Learning To Live, Take The Time, Metropolis), A Change Of Seasons is basically 1 song and a whole bunch of covers, but the titled track is all you really need, an epic 23 minute masterpiece is well worth it. Awake is going back to their early roots but is a great album with some unforgettable songs (Lie, Erotomania, Caught In A Web). Scenes From A Memory..Basically the best concept album i've ever seen, This cd is a MUST BUY for anyone, regardless if your a DT fan or not, Some great songs are (Dance Of Eternity, Finally Free, Home, Overture 1928). Six Degrees Of Inner Turbluence is where i think they got the most technical and stepped it up in the heaviness and with a 42 minute EPIC piece on the second cd which is absolutely orgasmic :)
Id well suggest it to anyone, some great songs (The Glass Prison, The Great Debate, Blind Faith, And the whole Six Degree's Of Inner Turbluence Piece itself. Train Of Thought..Undisputed, the most heavy album from Dream Theater and all the songs are very catchy, Some very good solo'ing on this cd even though lots of people disagree, some good songs (As I Am, This Dying Soul, In The Name Of God)

I've recently started to try out DT, but so far the songs i've got are all softer, balladlike or acoustic songs. That's great and all, but i'd like some heavier stuff.
Any suggestions?
Beyond this life (live version has some really awesome solos, I recommend it as well as the studio version)
As I am
Glass prison
Honor thy father
The mirror
Pull me under
Dream Theater isn't really a hard band, but when they do play hard, they do it well.

The Great Debate
Beyond This Life(Live at Budokan, Their interlude is just astounding in it)

Very haunting indeed, also the way James sings some of the vocals sends shivers down my spine like " So I'm moving on, I'll never forget as you laid there and watched me. I gave you my hand, I sais its okay, letting go, its time to leave here. And I'll carry on, the best that I can withoutyou here beside me, let Him come take you home." And that little bit of piano comes in with the intro repeade and it fades out, just as I said before, its a very haunting tune, same with Space Dye Vest from Awake.

Everybody, just a short post to remind you that DT's correct spelling is Dream Theater, NOT Dream Theatre. We've been seeing this mistake too much. Here's the proof: http://www.dtfaq.com/category/?categoryid=17#67
If the link doesn't work, read this:
What's with Fatez Warning in the IAW liners?
This is a joke regarding a misprint in the liners of Fates Warning's Parallels. In the liners, they thank "Dream Theatre", a commonly made spelling mistake which Dream Theater hates.

stream of conciousness. that's one of his fastest, and watching him on the budokan dvd playing the sweeps near the end of the first part is just amazing, you just see his fingers blur about all over the place without missing a single not. the in the name of god legato unison is also pretty fast, and the this dying out outro unison, 16th notes at 200bpm played perfectly in unison with JR. just buy train of thought if you want fast stuff basically. not all his best solos, but probably his fastest.

I've been listening to DT for about 8 - 9 years now. my first album was Awake. what a great album. been a huge fan since and think all players in the band are absolutely amazing. i went and seen them everytime they came to town and enjoyed every second. i've noticed in recent times between 6 degrees and train of thought i started to stray from them. the creativity of the music has declined a hair, but that's just my opinion. maybe DT meant for that to be? take it a little back to the roots. definetly fun stuff though. the addition of Jordan Rudess on keys brings some pretty crazy elements musically and in the live show. what a great player. who ever said they were warned to stay away from Falling into Infinity, don't be worried. it's a good album thats fun to sing along to. has some really nice tracks on it. DT rules! I would love to see Kevin on keys again sometime.

Trial of Tears is one of their better songs, I think. Not quite up there with Glass Prison, but still very, very good. I find myself listening to it alot lately...
That being said, does anyone else share my view that SFAM is just a bit overrated? After I finally sat and listened to the album, I felt a bit disappointed...musically, it was a bit too light for my taste, with the exception of a few parts here and there. The story is great, but it was hard to get into it, due to the instrumentation...
It's really a second and third listen album. Listen to it a few more times to really get into it.
But yes, it is a tiny bit overrated.

Well, you do have to factor that he's 42, so, he might not be albe to hit the notes that he once hit...but I doubt that. Also, on Name of God, on the DVD...was anyone really annoyed with Pertucci's harmony on the chorus? Although, it was in sync, it was still really annoying...too high pitched. Anyone agree?

Well, I'm pretty much the reverse. I think his work on Awake was far better. Part of the reason I don't listen to Rush as often as, say, Tool or whoever, is because of Geddy's vocal style. I like a singer who can show off a wide variety of ranges and sounds, for the most part, and Geddy doesn't really do that.

I see a lot of Carey/Portnoy comparrisons but frankly do not fully understand why. You're comparing apples to oranges. If both drummers were to switch bands and be "forced" to play each other's material- how good to you figure it'd sound? Not as good as they both do now in their respective bands, I bet. So ultimately, what's the point in these comparrisons? Do you think Mike sits back and thinks to himself: "hmm, I wonder if I 'pwn' Danny...?"? Likewise, do you really think Danny lounges around in his boxers wondering the same thing? My guess is no, so why are YOU? Rather than being so preoccupied with "who is better" or "who 'pwns who" why not just appreciate both drummers for BOTH of the contributions they make in the drumming world; whether you appreciate either or not. It's just respect. I admire both.
As for favorite DT album, I'll be honest; I can't narrow it down. To me, DT's best attribute is the fact that they do, over time, maintain the "progressive" idea. ToT is almost nothing like Images & Words and I see that as a positive thing. To see some so "stuck on" previous albums, proclaiming those to be "their best" just seems narrow to me. They evolve, they do different things WHILE maintaining the very progressive style fans have come to expect from them. When 'As I Am' was released, it was a very triumphant song to me. I absolutely love[d] it. The lyrics: "Don't tell me how to write" and "..I won't change to fit YOUR plan.." speak volumes to me. If these would-be DT bashers believe they can do better, I cordially invite them to DO SO and I'll promptly buy their first CD. It's quite easy to sit back and critique others, 'ain't' it?
Favorite DT songs? I have many. [so many heh..]
In no particular order:
1. A Change of Seasons
2. The Mirror
3. Pull me Under [the first DT song I ever heard]
4. The Glass Prison
5. As I Am
6. Endless Sacrifice

8. Erotomania
9. Misunderstood
10. Peruvian Skies [would be a GREAT song to cover live...]
11. War Inside My Head
12. Space Dye Vest
..many more, really.
As for James' voice; I'm not the biggest fan either but like others have said, I can't imagine replacing him, because narrow-opinions aside, WHO better to sing DT's music we've all come to know than James himself?.. That aside, I've often wondered what DT would sound like if Timo Kotipelto [Stratovarius] joined. [Side note: Any Stratovarius fans here?]

Comparing Danny and Mike might be like comparing apples and oranges, but they are only compared because they are two of, if not, dare I say it, the best progressive metal drummers out there right now. Now, before anyone tries to pwn me by saying "Omg so and so pwns both of them" shut up, because I admit I don't know every prog metal band out there. So there.
That being said, I know for a fact Mike looks up to Danny, because he was quoted as saying Danny was one of his favorite current drummers right now. That being said, I'm pretty positive that neither Mike nor Danny sit around wondering who can outdo who. Quite honestly, if those two got into a drum off, I'm sure it would end a tie, because they are both consummate musicians, and would probably respect each others' abilites too much to say "I beat you". The argument goes on so much because many fans of Tool are fans of Dream Theater, and vice versa, so naturally, they compare the two. You can't compare Jones/Chancellor to Petrucci/Myung, because unless Tool's instrumentalists have been holding back, there is no comparison to those in Dream Theater, in terms of technical ability. Songwriting ability? That's a whole nother debate for another thread.
That being said, I personally enjoy Danny's drumming more. Mike, at least lately, seems to be relying too much on a bass-snare-bass-bassbassbass-snare pattern, while Danny's use of tom patterns is quite varied and unique on Lateralus. In terms of skill, well, both men have been educated quite thoroughly, and I'm not sure who could pwn one or the other. If I *had* to pick, objectively, I'd take Danny simply because I think he's more interesting, not necessarily more talented. /End Danny v Mike debate here
As for favorite DT album, I'll be honest; I can't narrow it down.
ToT is without a doubt my favorite of theirs, because it so nicely blends heavy metal with progressive song structures. I don't like alot of their lighter material, I really don't. Stuff of I&W, or SFAM that is light and whatever...I really don't like most of it. I'm glad you're one of those who likes to see the actual progression occuring, not "I wish they still played like they did in 91" kind of people. :thumb:
As for James' voice; I'm not the biggest fan either but like others have said, I can't imagine replacing him, because narrow-opinions aside, WHO better to sing DT's music we've all come to know than James himself?..
I don't know if there's anyone who could sing DT better than him. But I do know that Charlie Dominici was not the right man for them. Honestly, anyone who doesn't like James' vocals shoud go grab When Dream and Day Unite and listen to some of Charlies' vocals. The sheer power and emotion that James brings to the table is far better than Charlie, even if he does rip off Geddy Lee every now and then ;)

I don't think anyone says that. Personally, I like I and W more, but the new stuff is great too. Its different, but its still Dream Theater, and its great music, what more can you ask for.

I recently got When Dream and Day Unite, and I am still amazed at how much better Labrie is. I agree, if you think Labrie doesn't fit their music, listen to this guy. If Labrie was on WDADU, it would probably be up there with the other albums, because the instrumental work is superb.

I have seen enough people say that the new stuff sucks, or that heavier DT is bad, then they proceed to tell me that I&W is the best thing they've ever done, etc etc.
So, whiile everyone who likes I&W might not think that way, I have seen plenty of people who do, which is a sahme, because ToT is brilliant in and of itself :thumb:

That sums it up, yup.
As for who is more talented, who is more creative, who is more hairy, who has a bigger nose, who has more friends, who can drink more, who has the most drums, who has the most MD Awards - Does it all really matter? LOL.. It's as though these people who say "Well <enter name here> is more creative.." are trying to, withuot actually saying it, sway anyone who might differ as if anyone with a different opinion is a threat.
Rather than compare Tool and DT - let's compare DT and Tool AGAINST the mainstream "rock greats" of today. That'd be a more worthwhile venture, no? Let's compareDT to Linkin Park just to see what happens.. Let's compare DT to just about any 'mainstream' band today.. ;) As far as I'm concerned Tool and DT might as well tour together; both as headliners. :P

Indeed it is. Dream Theater is actually one of those bands when I listen to a certain album, I might consider it their best at that time, then change my mind 5 seconds later when a song off a different album comes on. Same way with Iron Maiden.

I would kill tons of people to see Tool and DT do a tour together.
John Myung is a big fan of Tool too, which astonished me a little actually.
Seriously, a Tool and DT tour would just...rock so hard it isn't even funny
