Voices is the only song that I enjoy on Awake, I got into it cause it goes from Octavarium to that on Once In a Livetime on winamp, so I always listen to it.

Innocence Faded, The Mirror, Lie, Lifting Shadows of a Dream, Space-Dye vest and Voices...all class songs off a class album

Your opinions changed quickly...

We have to record a 3-5 minute song for our GCSEs it counts for 20% or 30% of it, I forget which.
DOE is a tad too long.

I find it quite sad that some people won't play the perfect song to their ability because they don't like the song. They just end up playing something stupidly easy like green day and just waste their GCSE.

Exactly, they're chosing Green Day over a grade piece which could get them a higher mark. If the DT plan fails I'll play a piece my guitar teacher gave me. I don't know what grade it is but he said played perfectly it will get me an A*

So today, in music class, we watched this video of the 2003 Drum Festival or something. So, as a joke, I asked if Mike Portney was on it, and my music teacher responds "Yeah, that guy's awesome." So for the last five minutes of class we got to watch DT play Dance of Eternity.

I have undertaken attempting to learn Home...I have up to the verse part so far, the open D chords part. The song's not too hard, barring the fact that there are some impossible runs up the neck, and the solo will cause my hands to spontaneously shatter.

The only people in my town that like Dream Theater are my guitar teacher and a few friends that I brainwashed. Most people listen to rap and pop.

Just try to brinwash some people into liking DT, so you have people to talk to about DT in school.

Kevin Moore saw a magazine with a model on it wearing a "space dye vest." I think he just got out of a relationship and he "fell in love" with the girl in the picture, so he wrote a song about it(or something like that)
its also like a farewell song for Kevin(since it's his song), DT doesn't play it live because they want to show respect to kevin. They actually invited him to play space dye vest live with them for LSFNY, but he declined because he wants to put Dream Theater in his past

Awake is like that, I was the same for ages and thought I would never get into it. But one day I finally did. However I prefer the 2nd half of the album much more than the 1st (with the exception of Erotomania). The last 3 songs are just sublime.

Are you insane?!? I have never heard a DT fan in my life who has called SFAM their worst album. Most fans rate it as one of, if not the best.
I didn't find it difficult to listen to at all, it was the 2nd DT album I ever listened to after ToT, and I listened to it all the way through and it blew me away. Whereas a lot of their other albums (i.e. Awake) I didn't enjoy until after quite a few listens.

In conclusion, get SFAM now!

I&W is perfect, seriously. Theres not a single track which I think they could do without. The musicianship is miles above the bar. A few albums do top it though.

My list goes something like this:

I&W
SFAM
ACOS
TOT
Awake
6DOIT
8vm
FII (Haven't heard all of this, but barring Lines in the Sand, its all bad)
WDADU (Once more, haven't heard this all, but its all bad. Live versions with James are very tastfull, though)

FII (Haven't heard all of this, but barring Lines in the Sand, its all bad)

i don't think it's as bad of an album as everyone says it is. lines in the sand, as you said, is a very good song, so is peruvian skies, and trial of tears is on of my favorite dream theater songs.

songs like just let me breathe and burning my soul really are terrible though. never EVER write songs about dissatisfaction with your record label.

my list would go:
6DOIT (seriously underrated)
Awake
I&W
SFAM
8V
TOT
FII
WDADU

can somone tell me there greatest song please

Octavarium is my favorite song of theirs...

Anyway, I have been listening to Awake more and I now am obsessed with the second half of the cd. My favorite song is probably the last song on there "Space-Dye Vest". The piano is just so great hearing, I love piano mixed into rock songs, to me it just gives it more atmosphere. Obviously I can say the same for keyboards, but I hope you guys understand my point.

With a band as varied as DT it's hard to pick one song that shows everything that they are capable of. I agree with Octavarium, then probably Metropolis Pt. 1 and A Change Of Seasons as well.

I'm exactly the same, the 2nd half of Awake is amazing. I love Lifting Shadows Off A Dream.

nowitzki is right about the quality though. It's not brilliant.

I like surrounded and space dye vest best...

The live version of the former is magnificent.

I like pull me under alot, the chorus is great and it's good for getting people into DT, because it's not too proggy and more of a song for people who aren't diehard DT fans...

Dt themselves.

And once I'm at it: I would like to see Myung write lyrics/poetry again.
that would be the best thing to happen to DT in a long while imo.

I wouldn't.

The Moore era was amazing, but DT have evolved now, and this is the perfect lineup. With Rudess in the band DT have recorded some of their best albums, and he bought them a new lease of life after the dissapointing Sherinian era. Sure I'd love to see KM maybe appear with DT for a one off live performance, but I'm more than happy with Rudess in the band.

Have any of you KM fans checked out any Chroma Key? Its rather good.

Yeah, Learning to Live has some excellent lyrics (which Myung wrote.) I think Rudess is an awesome player, although Moore has the edge in composition.

So does your mother, although I don't complain, nightly.

Anyway, I realised how really cool the intro to 6:0 is.
Actually the whole song is awesome, I need to get into Awake more.

I need to get into Awake more.

The vocals on Innocence Faded are just incredible, that's the song that made me love the album. Also, Lifting Shadaws... has some awsome vocals in it as well, as well as some killer riffs. Awake and I&W = James Labrie at his best.

Same here. I don't like PMU 'cause I don't think it starts off the album very well 'cause it's not really like any of the other songs. That's why I don't like 6:00 either, not a very good album opener.

Innocence Faded at 2:22 woooooowww.

I love his vocals on Misunderstood from 6DOIT, that takes some beating, it's actually quite close to the 8VM ballads in style.

Nice one:thumb: .

From what I can see of the first half of the gig, it's the same set list as Wolverhampton up to Fatal Tragedy. They played Home for SFAM and then played the Glass Prison for 6DOIT after the interval.

EDIT: wow, listening to that opening track, I can remember the rush I got from that before they came on. The intro to TROAE wasa sending tingles down my spine.

He's no more flamboyant than Steve Vai, or David Lee Roth for that matter.

Guys who look like that who burn at instruments tend to get a lot of poon.

EDIT: Ibanez, that is some truly funny stuff.

kicking rudess out wouldn't bring moore back. he wouldn't even play with them when they invited him to do a couple songs (i think it was the metropolis 2000 show that they invited him to). it's a shame too, i would've loved to hear a double keyboard version of learning to live and hear space-dye vest live at all.

and ibanez that's awesome. any recordings of that show?
