:) Yeah, I'd say they're alternative/progressive rock, for want of a better genre. They're hard to classify really though. There are definitely elements of prog in their music, anyway.

Alternative/Progressive metal I'd say.

I don't listen to Octavium too often for that reason, but I love Train Of Thought. I can't really explain why, because it's opinion based, but I just don't find it boring. The only problem with it is that sometimes it seems they are more concerned with showing off technical ability than writing a good song, but I can live with that.

Do you like the older albums like Awake?

You've listened to the whole of Metropolis Pt. 2: SFAM? Well that's regarded as one of their best albums by most fans, but it is very progressive so won't appeal to all.

I'm pretty sure that Space Dye Vest hasn't been played live only as a gesture to Kevin Moore, as it's pretty much his song. I don't think there are any legal reasons why they couldn't play it live, if they really wanted to. The band would own the rights to it, I'd imagine.
They definately have prog elements. I think that the comment saying they aren't was tongue-in-cheek, saying that they aren't prog because they don't have long solos etc. They have long songs, concept albums and strange time signatures which are defining characteristics of a prog band in my opinion.

I can still play it, but in the first years of comp I didn't have many friends and so spent the first year of bass playing practising for 3 or 4 hours a night. I only broke out of the habit about a year ago, when I made some real friends.

I can play the bit you're talking about, but I can only play it on a good day, sometimes I'll pull it off, sometimes it'll suck major bass and I'll keep messing up. My band covers Metropolis and Voices live, so I need to keep on the nift.

You're pretty lucky to be in a band that can cover DT (and Symphony X). I'm in a band with a guitarist that likes DT and could play some of their songs and in another band with a drummer that could probably play some of their songs, maybe I should start my own group.

It is that sort of guitar, but not that exact one. The one he uses is a light brown one, in the shape of an Ibenez or something.

I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but:

Octavarium is the eighth studio album by Dream Theater, it has eight songs and the songs are in the key of Fmin, Gmin, Amin, Bmin, Cmin, Dmin, Emin and Fmin, respectively through the number of the songs.

That's a rather cool thing, if you ask me. Nothing impressive by today's standards (not to mention this is a musicians forums) but it was worth the mention.

Oh yeah, there's one of the references to their influences during Full Circle that the article didn't pick up on - "Sailing on the Seven Seize" is ALSO a reference to Sailing the Seas Of Cheese by Primus. Not really that important, but I noticed they showed the album cover during that part of the song when they played it live. Not that important, but I thought it was worth a mention :D

too hard to make a top 10, also i only have: images and words, scenes from a memory and train of thought.
however, it is very interesting to note how very different everyone's lists are, yet they all seem to contain some images and words material, often near the top of the list, it truly is an orgasmic album, absolutely perfect in every way as far as im concerned.
the only other album that believe to have such perfection(song order, song structure, contrasts; ie. ups and downs, and melody) is Blood Sugar Sex Magik by RHCP.

But for me personally the only album I can say comes close to I&W is.... Scenes From A Memory. I would have to say overall they are my 2 favourite albums, they just display a range of emotions and moods like no others, and the songs are just flawless.

Is it just me, or is Myung very underated, atleast in this thread (mind you, i couldnt be stuffed reading all 149 pages so i just skipped to the last after reading the first few so i may have missed something about this). In pizzapie88's avatar you can see him at work. He is an amazing bass player. He was voted the best metal bass player on these forums. Please tell me i'm not the only one with this opinion.

I was shocked when i read somewhere that In The Name of God was the worst song on ToT. IMO, its the best song on the album along with stream of consciousness.

As I Am and Honor Thy Father are my least favourite tracks on TOT. Even thought they are both amazing anyway. The bass intro for As I Am is classic stuff.

Myung is a class bass player. I don't know why people don't appreciate him like some do with Wooten etc.

What makes you think he's under rated? He was voted the number one bassist in a top 100 poll this forum did a few months ago. And people in this thread seem to regard him as one of the most important factors in DT and an excellent songwriter.

I actually can't remember where i read it. It also could have been one of my friends that said it. I'm not to sure, but i do remember it being said in some form. As for Myung, early on in this thread, everyone was talking about petrucci and portnoy and i was thinking, what about myung. Its good to hear that people do regard him as important in DT like i do! :thumb:

Lol thanks! Yeah I'm with you on that one. I love his sig Yamaha six string. I saw a similar five string (body, neck etc) that tickled my fancy. I love to be able to afford his actual sig bass, but unfortunatly im 16 and only work casually at a super market lol. His bass would be like a years wage for me

1: Glass Prison
2: Misunderstood (such a cool song, I'm thinking of covering it with my band)
3: As I Am
4: Through Her Eyes
5: Home
6: About To Crash (Reprise)
7: YTSE Jam
8: Octavarium
9: Under A Glass Moon
10: In the Name Of God

Hard to come up with a top ten, but this is what it probably would be:

A Change Of Seasons
Trial Of Tears
Hell's Kitchen
Octavarium
Learning To Live
About To Crash
Metropolis Pt 1
Overture 1928
Lie
Hollow Years

But it's strange, my two favourite DT albums (Awake and SDOIT) have hardly any in that list, because the songs work much better as part of the album.

The Glass Prison

i found a couple of clips on progarchives.com, and decided to get the album everyone says is their best - I&W. considering my favourite band at the time was Maiden and i only listened to metal, it took a while to get into, especially with the keyboards and as it's one of their most progressive records. but now it's probably my favourite next to awake.
