I agree. I worked out that for two Dream Theater gigs I've travelled close to 1500 miles (this is including return journeys, so I've went close to 750 to get there and close to 750 to get home). It's totally worth it for Dream Theater though.

Any Ideas Stark Effect?

Well check this one out..

Listen to track 1. The key is F. Then at the beginning of track two very carefully.. you will hear a ringing tone that is the note f#..the black note above f. The actual song is in G, and at the very end, crank the volume.. you will hear the last note rising slowly.. and it hits G#!!! The next song is in A, and the end of that is in the key of, you guessed it, A#. This goes on for the whole album.. until, the last song, Octavarium, is in the key of F again!!

The whole idea is that the album is in one constant circle, it forms one long "octave".. fitting, considering the album title. There are tons more in the booklet, ask if you're interested.

I'll make it more straightforward.. Look on a keyboard. There are 8 white notes, and 5 black notes from F to F. So in total, 13 semitones from F to F, including both Fs.

Well, there are eight tracks.. and... you know the in between tracks, with the "-" sign in front of the running time?? There are five of those in total!!!!

I really wish I could go into more detail, but alas I have to go. I'll get back to this topic tomorrow.

Apperently 'These Walls' is a ripoff of a Linkin Park song too, although I've not seen the website where they have the mp3s playing next to each other. I can't say for sure because I've not listened to Linkin Park since I was 13/14.

It's pretty strange how I despise Linkin Park but don't mind 'These Walls', and how I'm indifferent to Muse but love 'Panic Attack' and 'Never Enough'.

Also, does anyone else get a 'Sing For Absolution' vibe from the verse in 'Sacrificed Sons'?

Live at the Marquee I'd say, although i think a lot of them were recorded again for the CD so it's not technically all live.

I think he's alot better than most vocalist, the only vocalist I think can rival him is Daniel Gildenlow. I also think that he was awesome in London, a few 'sack-attacks'here and there but it's to be expected. 90% incredible is better than 100% good.

i thought james was perfect on wednesday, besides the 2 majesty songs. i was right by the speakers on the right and the sound wasn't that great so maybe that affected it, but it was the best i've heard him singing live in years (judging from bootlegs/live dvds).
on budokan on the higher or louder parts he just seems to shout the words, not caring about the pitch or anything. last week though he was even adding in high notes where before he'd have just sung an octave lower.

What?!?! In London he was on fire, his voice was incredible.
I totally agree. Although I've only seen them on this tour and the Train Of Thought tour, I was more impressed with his voice this time round; I can't think of any faults he made and he put alot of energy into his performance.

Not at all. In the programme, James Labrie says,
"It's hard to believe it's been 20 years, it feels like we're just getting into a real cool place abd groove. Here's to many more years of new music and tours. See you there."
I seriously doubt I'd survive them breaking up :upset:

He was good at Wolverhampton, but it's just that he can't sing as well as he used to. His best vocals were in Under a Glass Moon in Wolves, he got that high note real good. no TIME to dissapear.

He damaged his vocal chords and stopped taking care of himself for a while. (hence the looking like Meatloaf in LSFNY) Recently (the past couple years) he's been training with a vocal coach and taking care of himself, hence looking and sounding much better at Budokan than LSFNY. Apparently, at I think the London gig, he even hit the high F# in Learning to Live, so he's getting back to where he was.

There will be more AA songs, because he's only done steps 1-7 of the AA steps. I think Petrucci is a way better backing vocalist than MP. You can only dream:p. I prefer Jp's writing on the I&W album.

Saw them live at the Hammersmith Apollo on tuesday. They were rather good. Better than rather good. Bloody good. The best, maybe. They were better than they were in Paris, but that may only be because they had a longer set this time. Oh, sweet god they were good. Portnoy was doing this thing where he'd switch to playing one-handed and throw his other stick to his techie, then the techie'd throw it back... they did it 3 times, cause he kinda dropped it the first two times. Jordan looked pretty fearful, cause the path of the stick nearly intersected with his head  But when Portnoy caught it the third time he got possibly the biggest cheer of the night.

Just had to get that off my chest.

I was a little skeptical at first of them covering Dark Side of the Moon, but they did it with style and taste. And the guest vocalist they used had crazy skills.

What IS that red box that Rudess plays? I'm deeply intrigued. I wanna get the instructional keys video he's bringing out, cause I like to dabble in keys every now and again...

I like Dream Theater a lot. I hate when people say Petrucci is just a mindless wanker. I have always found his playing very tasteful.
He's one of the only 'shredders' with feel, I find...

I think Satriani is tasteful at times as well. And I shouldn't have to bring up "For The Love Of God" by Steve Vai. People like Batio however, I just can't hear the feeling in their playing. If anybody can PM me a song where he displays feeling I would appreciate it.

'Rain Forest' by MAB is pretty good I think, I don't have the song on my computer though, sorry. There aren't any other songs by him that I particularly like though.

Personally, I really don't like Vai's or Satch's "shredding". Vai has got a really flashy, but kind of lyrical style of playing but ultimately I think his songs are boring (there are a few notable exceptions though, like 'Blue Powder'). Satch is better than Vai in my opinion, but his music just doesn't have enough going on to keep me intrested for a whole album.

Although Petrucci is pretty straightfowward with his playing, I much prefer him to all the "shredders" I previously mentioned - I think Petrucci has more feel and his solos almost always sound really good to me.

My favourite shredder is Matthias IA Eklundh, but he doesn't seem to get nearly as much recognition as he should.

The solo from Overture 1928, which plays the theme from Metropolis, which is on the first metropolis,
"There must be the third and last dance, and this one will last forever.
Metropolis watches and thoughtfully smiles. She's taken you to your home."
is absolutely stunning. His solos in Surrounded and Another Day take my breath away. That solo wasn't "played" it was composed, perfectly for the song.

Overture 1928 and most of the rest of the songs on SFAM have just mezmorising solos in them. I love that one you mentioned. Why doesn't JP make them easier for me to play though:upset: .

It really helps the feel as a concept album. I love the way the concept isn't just lyrical, but also musical. That must be one of the only concept albums to borrow themes from the music which is it's topic, along with story references. The greatest concept elbum ever... **** it. The greatest album ever.

I don't know, some of the songs sound too similar. It's intentional, and it's part of what makes the album great, but the fact that it doesn't have that many songs I want to skip to immediately makes it weaker in my mind. I've probably listened to it too much, though.

Does anyone know who drums for Petrucci on the G3 cd? I think it's Portnoy, but I can't be sure. I know he drums for the G3 jams.

Yeah, to really get SFOAM You have to listen two the whole thing, that's why I think the live versions of isolated tracks off there lose a little due to the lack of continuity.

My guitarist wanted me to know the words to master of puppets in case we ever look to be desperate to cover a song in case of onstage emergencies.
so I decided to break out the DT cover... if I have to learn it, at least I can listen to a good band play the song.

A band who continue to make good albums...

But seriously, I'm sure that DT will always stay loyal to the music, after this long in their careers, it would be pointless, as they have gained so many fans doing what they do. But wouldn't another concept record be phenomenal?
