I'm not sure. I think that a clear winner will become apparent soon, or maybe we'll just work out a compromise.

As of right now, IMO, the fourth option is the clear winner. The rest of you guys seem divided amongst the other choices.

EDIT: Let's keep it going for another 24 hours. The "poll" will close then.

I really don't like Labrie's vocals on some parts of that song. The solo is really awesome though, not too flashy yet really funky. Apparently the song was inspired by a Pantera concert Petrucci and Portnoy attended.

Holy Christ, I just watched the commentary audio of Metropolis: Scenes from New York. Here are my comments.
1) Mike Portnoy should never be allowed to direct again. For some reason he thinks all those retarded effects are cool.
2) They are mostly a bunch of dorks who aren't funny when they're trying to be.
3) I would be pissed if I was Myung or LaBrie. It seems like every time they tried to start talking Portnoy would interrupt them and go off on another tangent.
4) Rudess is actually the most entertaining and interesting member to listen to, although musically he's my least favorite. (Leave the shredding to Petrucci and write some decent music for gods-sake. [Oh well, at least he got "Disappear" right.])
5) Was I mistaken or did Portnoy say something borderline racist on there? When the choir comes out he said something like "well, i guess I know where the chicken fried [something] went"

Overall it was pretty entertaining, but those things just really annoyed the hell out of me.

I agree with you about the KevMo Rudess thing. I still think they should have kept Derek in the band. I was listening to ACoS the other day and really loving what he did with the keys throughout the whole band. The thing I don't like about Rudess is that he is capable of playing great music, as seen from his solo CD's but when he goes into DT, he just puts it in full on shred mode which doesn't always work.

Years: 20
or if you mean how long they play the gig for
roughly 3 hours 8-11 with a 15 minute break.

Ah I was wondering about the play time of their last two gigs in England, - the threes hours thing, didn't know they had been together for 20 years though :amaze: That's longer than I have been alive.

But his only album with the band was their worst? Falling into Infinity= Wank.

FII isn't that bad of an album at all. After the Masterpieces that were I&W, Awake and ACoS I can definately see it being a huge letdown, however in the grand scheme of things, it's pretty decent.

Trial of Tears for the win.

And besides, with FII Atlantic was screwing them around at the time, it was supposed to be a completely different record before Atlantic started hacking and slashing at it.

Great songs on FII: New Millenium, Peruvian Skies, Burning My Soul, Lines in the Sand, Trial of Tears. That's 5 great songs on an 11 track album. By no means groundbreaking, but still a decent album nonetheless.

I think some songs are brilliant. But they didn't have complte artistic control over their music and Desmond Child co-wrote a few songs on it. Trial of Tears, Hell's Kitchen and Peruvian Skies are amazing. But I think that the fact that the record were "exerting pressure in the band to make it more commercial" (according to the programme from the gig on monday night) and I think that ruined the album. OnceInALIVEtime is also IMO their worst live album. It's not bad by any means, just not as good as their other 3.

However, Derek Sherinian played on my favourite song of all time "Change of Seasons", the solos he plays on there are class and the sheer fact that he played on it makes him worthy of my respect. He's also very arrogant on
5YearsinaLIVEtime.

Has anyone here heard the original version on ACOS? It's on "Images and Words Demos" from YTSE Jam.com And It's really weird. It has a guy called Chris Cintron on it, and apparently he's the one who helped to shape alot of the vocal melodies in the song.

i like FII, it is different but it seems more melodic and was obviously a totally different direction from Awake. most of the songs are ok, but it also has some of my favourite DT songs like take away my pain, hell's kitchen and trial of tears. plus some of my favourite petrucci solos, especially peruvian skies and take away my pain. not really on the same level as most of DT's other releases but it is still a very good album.

They would fail, and not just James. Petrucci couldn't do both guitar parts (let alone only one part, and have the same feel as Mikeal or Peter) Myung could do the bass, and Portnoy would have a hell of a lot of trouble doing some of Martins parts.

I mean, a few songs on it are ok, but in general, the lyrics are bad and the vocal melodies are worse, and it's falsely marketed as a return to Rush's hard-rocking days complete with better solos, but that's not really true: "Counterparts" did those things much better. The lyrics still stunk and the vocal melodies were still iffy, but the band played like crazy. Lifeson even shredded, something he almost never did.

Sorry about the big post, hopefully some of you can be bothered to read it.

OK then. Monday night was the best gig I had ever been to. Tuesday was even better.

The apollo was almost full, I hear the shows were sold out both nights.
When the house lights went the place was electric. The opening drums from The Root Of All Evil were played, with flashes of huge 3D octavarium balls. Then the song kicked in and we were rolling, a great opener. They then followed with Panic Attack, John Myung starting it off with the bass intro, that guy is so unbelieveably cool.

The screen then showed ToT tour intro video (its a bonus feature on the Budokan DVD), but it was in reverse and went back through all the years, to 1985 and the Majesty days. They then played a song from that period, and a song from each album in chronological order up until the intermission. Highlights included Peruvian Skies which contained instrumental sections from Floyd's WYWH, and Metallica's Wherever I May Roam.

After the intermission they came back with 2 songs from ToT, which went down excellently (tatically replacing the chorus "Take me as I am" with "Eat my *** and balls.)

They then finished the 2nd set with the final 3 songs from 8VM, concluding with the title track itself, which was breathtaking. The intro to this was JR soloing on what looked like a red pad which he ran his fingers across kind of like a keyboard but with no keys (sorry for the crap explanation of it, some one probably knows what it is.)

They then left the stage to a huge ovation, just to return for the encore of Pull Me Under and Metropolis (they started metropolis from the instrumental section and played it right through).

Incredible.

At the end MP spoke on the mic and said "We'll be back tomorrow with a completely different set", so I knew we were in for a treat.

On the 2nd night they opened with TROA once again, but other than that the set was completly different. They followed TROA with The Mirror and Lie. The first set also included the unreleased "Raise The Knife" which went down very well considering most people had probably never heard it. The first set finished with In The Name Of God, on of my personal favourite DT songs, superb.

Then it came, the moment we had been waiting for, DT covering DSOTM in full. Musical ecstasy. They played the whole album superbly, JP's playing really captured the mood of the songs like few other guitarists could do. Theresa Thompson (from LSFNY) came on to do Great Gig In The Sky. Her voice is just stunning, her performance couldn't have been better.
During Money we got a guest sax-player for the solo who is apparenlty is in Roger Water's band. The whole performance was flawless.

With the whole crowd reeeling from what they just witnessed it would seem impossible for them to come back with anything to match it. They managed however when the encore started with Theresa back out for the Spirit Carries On. The place was absolutely electric, the performance was superb, Labrie and Theresa both delivering stunning vocal perfoamances.

I could have gone home then and been happy to say I had seen the greatest night of music in my life. But then we hear the keyboard intro of Learning To Live. IMO this is possibly DT's greatest song, and this performance was definitely my highlight of the shows. The whole band were on top form, absolutely flawless.

People seem to criticise DT shows for two reasons generally 1- James' voice, and 2- they are too static on stage.

Well at these shows there were no signs of either of those points.
James' voice was absolutely incredible. Admitedly on some live albums his voice has been a bit sketchy, but in London it was just flawless. He also acted as a great fontman, getting the crowd involved and entertained (although he was off stage for the long instrumental sections.)

As for the band being static, while they obviously don't run around like Maiden they are moving around and seem to be genuinlly enjoying what they are doing. JM and JP would wander over to each other to jam during certain songs, and they would take the centre stage for solos etc, (notably JM walking right to the front of the stage ready for the Metropolis bass solo  .)

Sorry if I sound like a huge fanboy who worships the band, but.... well I guess I am :D

I totally agree an Jame's voice. He was incredible when I saw him (only the first night unfortunately, couldn't afford two nights away), notably in 'Under A Glass Moon'. He also pulled off the screams in 'Octavarium' pretty damn well as I thought this could be tricky for him live (and that part was a huge musical orgasm for me :D)

I have a few, but my girlfriend is in canada, and they're on her camera. I went up on my own, saw the show with her, stayed the night at a hotel, and then saw her off at about 8 in the morning. I then travelled around London and I CROSSED ABBEY ROAD!It was a great experience.

Me and my mate were thinking of doing that while in London, but weren't sure where abouts Abbey Road was :( . However we still managed to check out a lot of sights and also many pubs :chug:

I think it's just a normal England shirt, that majesty symbol is on one of the durms. It was really cool seeing him wearing that.

A few questions:
a) What songs do Petrucci/Portnoy sing on? and
b) Who does the vocal trade off with James at about 8:00 into The Glass Prison?

shamed-angel
10-27-2005, 03:45 AM
a)Petrucci sings backing on Fatal Tragedy, Change of Seasons, Strange Deja Vu, quite a few songs reallyif you hear melodic backing voocals, like "Oohs" or "Aahs", then that's JP and MP.
b)That's Mike! The instrumental section after that is the only DT song I know with "Hey!"s in it. Did anyone else notice it? Apparently it's just James exhaling, but it sounded really cool, so they sampled it for that section.

But where in As I Am does Portnoy sing? :D

Yo, went to DT in Wolverhampton last night and I have to say it was rather good. Although at some points I would have fallen to sleep if it had not been standing. The definate low point of the gig was Sacrificed Sons and the intro to Octavarium, which I think must have lasted about 35 minutes altogether with JR's boring 10 minute intro on his new keyboard device. Apart from that it was awsome, especially Metropolis at the end. Also, I was dissapointed that they played Home as the song off SFAM, which I think is the worst.

Like at London they played a song off each album, starting with a Majesty song which I'm not sure of. Here is the set-list.

Root of All Evil
Panic Attack
? Majesty Song ?
Fortune In Lies
Under a Glass Moon
Caught In A Web
Peruvian Skies
Speak to Me(?B-side?)
Home - With added on Metallica - Memory Remains jam at the end.

Interval

The Glass Prison
This Dying Soul
Never Enough
Sacrificed Sons
Octavarium
Metropolis Pt. 1

Was a good gig, but as I said, the beginning of Octavarium just dragged on. JP was wearing some crazy 3/4 lengths that made him look about 15 years old. JR with his crazy new beard, he has a big organ next to his keyboard which looked like a bookcase to me. Myung looked as cool as ever. Portnoy throwing his sticks in the air, and his drumkit looks even bigger in real life than on the DVDs. JL looks really skinny in real life as well.

I also got my CD onto the stage so JP could have a listen, but he just kicked it away. Now I hate him:angry: .

The merch was over-priced but I still got a 20th Anniversary shirt (£20!!!) and a wrist band (£5). It was good though cause there were loads of different shirts outside for £5 so I got some of those aswell.

Shame on you all who haven't been to see DT or aren't going to, it isn't on to be missed.

i had my camera and wallet in my coat pocket, so there was quite a noticable buldge in my pocket. he never said a thing when i was searched though, i thought they'd just given up on confiscating cameras, seeing as most people have them on their phones now anyway.

i was glad they played home anyway, my favourite track off SFAM. besides that, peruvian skies, under a glass moon and metropolis were my favourite songs played. i did think JR's octavarium solo went on a bit too long aswell though. i bought both shirts after the gig, although some of the ones outside looked better, and a quarter of a cost. but then again the w h smiths transfers would probably wash off after a week and they apparently had the wrong dates on the back.

If I had a bit more money right now I would have got some more things, as the official merchandise was all very cool. And I didn't think any of the unofficial shirts outside looked that great, plus they were £10 in London, which is not that cheap for a shirt that's going to be crappy quality.

In my opinion that's probably the only song on Scenes From A Memory that I would call great. There's some other good song ('Fatal Tragedy', 'The Dance of Eternity', 'Finally Free') but 'Home' is alot better than the rest for me. In fact, it's probably my second favourite track (behind 'Scarred', which everyone else ignores for some reason).

Neal Morse- Vocals, Keyboards, Guitars.
Mike Portnoy- Drums, Percussion, Vocals.
Roine Stolt- Guitar, Vocals.
Pete Trewavas- Bass and vocals.
The band released "Bridge Across Forever" in 1997. A fantastic prog album, by in my opinion, THE prog rock supergroup.

Nah its only 3 dates (I think) in London and Wolverhampton, which are just too far away.

And my band members are all away at (the same) university, so they're always practising it together, and I'm practising it at home to the original. Then we'll rehearse it as a band in the Christmas holidays, ready for a gig in January.

It's pretty tricky but very fun to play.
