By the way John P's solo stuff kind-of sucks

Its good stuff, but just not for everyone I guess (Some consider him a wanker, other consider him a god). I love John's solos. He was the reason why I got a guitar 5 years ago. I recommend looking into some of his works before deciding if you like it or not.
EDIT: Most of it is shred.

Metropolis Part 1
In the Name of God
Pull Me Under
Endless Sacrifice
... I could just continue, but those are some of my favorites.

it's kind of funny indeed :p
but it sounds very goo in the beginning of Hollow Years
I find it a bit annoying when there is an instrumnetal part and James just goes backstage.
I mean the instrumental part is part of DT too, and so is LaBrie, so IMO he should just stay ob the stage and rock along.
he is the vocalist/frontman, although one could argue about Mikebeing frontman, but still

Haha, Mike is the energy of the band. Has anyone noticed the transion of Myung? like, watch him on the Tokyo DVD, he's head banging and walking around on stage (most notably on the Ytse Jam) and then you watch the Budokan, he just stands there. Makes me kinda sad :(

and of course Liquid Tension Experiment
spock's beard is incredible. it's incredibly rare to find a band in the 21st century that understands vocal counterpoint as well as spock's beard . . .

Yeh that is kind of wierd. Has Myung had some sort of accident on stage or something so now he doesn't dare move? hmmmm.... what about when Myung rugby tackled Labrie for a bet. I can't imagine that of him now.
It's funny on LSFNY(or Budokan... i can't remember) when LaBrei has his hands over Myungs shoulders and he looks really scared, and when DT did the cover of Damage inc with Barney Greenway(Nalpalm Death) and Myung is just standing in the corner playing along and laughing Barney's vocals.

I'll have to watch that again, with him putting his hands on his shoulders. Myung just looks tired on the Budokan DVD. When did he tackle LaBrie? I wanna see! :)
I think he's just really reclusive. I really think he doesn't feel appreciated by the band. They don't seem to really acknowledge him anymore. If I was in his place, I would feel really hurt with LTE, I mean, he wasn't good enough to do it, but Mike, John and Jordan just decide to do something together without him? Then with Mike and John really just stiffling his creativeness (for instance, they said that they told Myung to come with a song in proper format or dont bring it up, which is sad because Learning to Live and Lifting Shadows off a Dream are amazing songs!). I don't know though, that's what I've observed. He's naturally been pretty shy guy, so maybe he's just gotten more reclusive.

what you are saying aout LTE isn't true.
it was John's idea to start up an instrumental band.
so he asked Jordan Rudess ( who wasn't in DT at that time!!)
same goed fro Tony.
he had a complete band, except for a drummer missing, since it is very hard to find a drummer that can keep up with these three insane guys, John's wive suggested to ask Mike to fill in drumming.
so I don't think Myung should feel let down, but I agree he should be allowed to hand in lyrics/poerty again, and he should beturned up in de mix, I mean he is one the worlds greatest bassplayers, such a shame if you can hardly hear him :(

Actually, (and I don't have the CD cases here with me, so I could be wrong) I remember reading in the booklets to the LTE CDs that MIKE was approached for a supergroup instrumental band, and he picked Tony and Jordan, and it was MIKE'S wife who suggested JOHN. For example, Petrucci in As I Am during the solo or Portnoy during the instrumedely when he was doing his thing. The production is great. yup this is correct. Mike stated that he wanted the project to "his own", so he didn't want petrucci at first. It was only after struggled to find a guitarist for Lte did his wife suggested petrucci (a possibility he was always conscious of yet didn't want to turn to).
So Lte was not an attempt for petrucci/portnoy/rudess to ditch myung and labrie, it was a supergroup project spearheaded by portnoy. Again rudess wasn't involved with dt at the time he was asked to participate and portnoy certainly didn't have petrucci penciled in as his first option. Having said that, I"m glad everything turned out the way it did--Lte is great :thumb:

yeh i was dissappointed with Octavarium when I bought it. Apart from Octavarium itself i think the album is pretty lame, I really don't like the blatent Muse influenced songs cause they don't bring out the bands talents. I&W, SFAM and TOT are definatly my favourite three albums with Octavarium somewhere at the bottom.

Yeah, I happen to agree about Octavarium. A huge letdown, IMO. The title track is the only song that I really listen to anymore on that album. My favorite DT album is actually a stalemate between I&W, Awake, and SFAM. It always seems to swing to one of those 3 albums. FII is really low on my list, as is Octavarium. I like 6DOIT and TOT, but IMO, they aren't even close to their earlier stuff. It just seems like they went downhill afterawhile. I don't know what it is. I guess, it just pisses me off that they have so much musical ability and talent, yet they're songwriting ability is nowhere even close anymore. 6DOIT and TOT have so much useless soloing that it really hurts the songs. 8vm is just really bland, IMO. Panic Attack just sounds way too much like a numetal song for me to listen to it. I'm sure many have lashed out already about the obvious Muse-rip off of Never Enough, so I won't get into it. I do like TROAE, I just think it could have been better (did they really need to use the chorus from "This Dying Soul?"). These Walls sounds like Linkin Park, I still like it though, but not too much. No comment on IWBY. TALW is a nice song, not my style though. Might have fit in the album if the rest was real good and real heavy, but that's not the case. Sacrificed Sons, despite having poor lyrics, has a **** good verse and chorus, IMO. However, once it reaches the instrumental part, I feel it kills all the emotion in the song. I love how everything sounds before the instrumental break. Very disturbing, emotional, melodic, beautiful. 8vm, I feel is a pretty **** good song all the way through. I'm sure there's been many comments on here about the annoying lyrics at times (sailing on the seven seize the day tripper diem's ready, etc.), so I won't really do a full analysis on it. I still think it's quite a good song. There's a few parts that I don't like that keep me from liking it more, but I still feel really satisfied when I finish listening to it.

Dude, you know nothing about DT or what? You know Mike wrote The Glass Prison, This Dying Soul and The Root of All Evil so that they would be connected...that's why. Notice how the break down riff in TGP and TDS are the same? Its the premise man

Yes, I'm aware of the connection between the songs due to the lyrical content being about alcoholism. Them using the chorus from "This Dying Soul" again really pisses me off though. A guitar riff is one thing. "The Glass Prison" has many guitar riffs in it, so using one again isn't so bad. However, taking the entire chorus to a song and using it in another song is more so being lazy considering that the two songs were written a few years apart from each other. What, they couldn't have come up with another original section? By the way, what does "Dude, you know nothing about DT or what?" even mean? I have a problem with a song, so you assume I know nothing about the band? It's called an opinion, buddy.

You could just look for bands who play Progressive Metal, like Symphony X for example (I've never heard Symphony X so I don't know if they sound anything alike), I believe the band Circus Maximus sound very similar to Dream Theater (Although, the singer is very different to LaBrie)...

I think the lyrics on SFAM are incredible. They're telling a story, and they do a fine job. I love the way the lyrics are written, they tell the story so well.
And What are you talking about? His recent lyricvs have been amazing. I love the Never Enough lyrics, they're about how Dt's fan's are ungrateful for what he gives to satisfy them. Octavarium's "Someone Like Him" lyrics are about JP wanting to be a better guitar player when he was younger. But are written metaphorically. Their lyrics get better all the time. But my favourite DT lyric has to be:- " We can hope for the future, but there may not be one."
My favourite band ever. Can't wait to see them again :)
i think the beginning of octavarium (the song) sounds like shine on your crazy diamond by pink floyd.
That's the point, according to MP.

Just bought I&W Live in Tokyo and 5 Years in a Livetime.
Myung was freaking hyper back then. The commentaries were funny
Someone: What're you playing there, John?
Myung: Uhh... yeah, bass. (Same reply as LSFNY  )
Someone: Miracle, what's this song about?
Ruddess: Yeah, what's this song about, John?
Myung: It's about 5 minutes.

Myung's the greatest member of the freaking band.

On the song octavarium, the purposely did that though, its not ripping them off, its more paying tribute.
That doesn't really make sense though. When I hear "Never Enough", it sounds like Muse to me. They took Muse's style of songwriting and wrote a song with it. How is this a tribute to them? If they just put a riff in a song that sounded like Muse, then it would just be a reference and a tribute to Muse, but not if they make an entire song off of another band's style. For example, let's take two other DT songs: "Home" and "The Great Debate." "Home" features a bass line and sitar (on keyboards) that is musically similar to Tool's "46 and 2." However, that's the only thing in the song that sounds like Tool, so it's just a reference to another band, showing that they appreciate their music. Now, listen to "The Great Debate." It bears a striking resemblance to Tool, especially "Third Eye" and "46 and 2." The song almost entirely consists of these Tool-influenced parts (with the exception of the chorus which sounds like "Run to the Hills."). It's not a little reference or tribute to another band, it's stealing their style for a song.

I don't know, it was played by MTV a lot so maybe it was their most successful song commercially?
On that subject, DT has had little luck with singles getting played on MTV and the radio, but personally I think one of the reasons is they never picked their best songs. And they always tried to cut them down in the videos to 3-4 minutes which often just ruins the songs. The following songs have videos:
Pull Me Under
Another Day
Take The Time
Lie
The Silent Man
Hollow Years
3 of those are pop rock ballads, which isn't going to attract any attention from fans of metal music (I think I'm correct in saying that the majority of DT fans are more likely to watch shows on TV playing metal videos, headbangers ball etc oppsed to when pop videos are being shown).
Pull Me Under and Lie were the most successful singles even though they are average DT songs, and obviously attracted fans through the metal side of their sound.
Take the Time is a superb song but the song is destroyed when its edited video makes them look stupid.
SO if DT stuck to releasing their heavier songs rather than their most commercial ones they could potentailly have become a lot bigger. Recently songs like TGP, As I Am and Panic Attack I think could have done well. But MP has said the band aren't going to make any more videos, because it costs too much money, and they'd prefer to sepnd that money on something the fans would appreciate more, like a live DVD.
I really cannot stand Another Day. It irritates me to no end.
Every other song on the album is pure gold though.

I agree with whoever was saying that some songs/albums you grow to dislike and some you end up liking.
Take the Time for a while was my favorite song (and it's actually the song that ended up getting me to listen to more of DT's stuff) but now I don't have the patience for it. Really the only songs off of I&W I like now are Metropolis, Under a Glass Moon, and LtL.
And Awake I hated for the longest time, but as most frequenters of this thread will tell you, it's now one of my favorite DT albums (there's honestly not a single bad track on there).
A Change of Seasons I've always liked, but it's only because of the title track. (now that I think about it, I don't think I've listened to the covers at all)
FII I HATED with a passion, but lately I've found that I enjoy the majority of the tracks on it.
Metropolis 2 has always been one of my favorite albums, but eventually after listening to it constantly I only had the patience for 5 or 6 of the songs.
I only liked TGP, TGD, and Blind Faith off of 6DOIT Disc 1 at first, but now the entire disc is probably my favorite DT Disc.
Like with FII or Awake, I could only stand War Inside My Head and TTTSTA off of Disc 2 at first. Now I don't really have a problem with any of the tracks (even the ballads, which are normally the DT tracks I hate).
I was immediately attracted to ToT, but after listening to that constantly I got tired of the intro/verse/chorus/verse/chorus/really-long-solo-part/bridge/chorus structure of the songs.
Octavarium so far, I like TROAE, These Walls, Panic Attack, Never Enough, and the title track, but absolutely HATE the others. So I don't know, hopefully that one will grow on me.
Long story short, I don't usually like the ballads, but some of them eventually grow on me. Oh, and I didn't mention When Dream And Day Unite because it's not a real DT album. :p
I need to pick up 6DOIT. Then I just need FII to complete the collection.
I just thought about it today and I realized how close I am to getting all their albums. I did it without noticing.

I just got 6DOIT a week ago and have been listening to it quite a bit. It sorta turned out to be the opposite of what I was expecting.
On here I have heard much praise for The Glass Prison and The Great Debate, but they are my two least favorite tracks on the entire album. TGD is growing on me a little bit though, and the intro on TGP is alright, plus the chorus is catchy, but the rest of it is too blah to me.
I already had Live at Budokan, so I already knew most of the 2nd CD plus disappear of the 1st disk, so I already liked those songs. My guess is TGP and TGD will both grow on me, as a lot of DT fans consider them great songs?
