I still think The Glass Prison is the best song they've ever written, I'd kill to hear that live. I think mostly, I'm a fan of their heavier stuff (especially stuff like Panic Attack, Home, The Mirror and others from Awake).
The Glass Prison owns live...such a great song.
It drags on in one or two places, but not enough to bring the quality of the song down.

hey people I havent been around these parts in a while. I have 2 DT Discs including the budokan set and enjoy them thoroughly. I have to say though:
never, ever heard them on the radio. Yes, most songs are long but come on...maybe DT should just put a couple short songs on each record that could be single-worthy.

That was what they intended with...Panic Attack and These Walls? for 8vm? I was pretty sad that they didn't play ITNoG nor TGP when i saw them last week, but we got As I Am and a slightly sped-up version of Pull Me Under :O

This Dying Soul is one of my least favorite songs off Train Of Thought... its just so... annoying almost. If the song would have ended around 8 min, it would have been decent but it just drags on with mindless soloing.

did you see them in vegas? They did Pull Me Under for the encore and they sped up the second verse to double time for some reason. I guess their time was running out.
That was an amazing show, despite that they didn't play Glass Prison or This Dying Soul. I was right against the barrier beneath John Petrucci. It was awesome. :thumb:

It sure does, it doesn't even matter whether Petrucci nails the arpeggios or not; the song is so powerful on it's own. I'd love to hear all three of the AA songs played in order live, hopefully they will do that in London.

I'm sorry, but I am very sick of people worshipping Dream Theater. They play in odd time signatures that simply have nothing to do with the sacred Geometry they supposedly espouse. All my recorded material is based on mathmatical structures that have proven themselves through eons.
Their supposed use of art as a communcation of the collective unconcious is simply elementary rambling. Freud would spit on them given the opportunity.
On a more basic level, their grasp of modality is, quite frankly, lacking. They rely on the standards set forth by musicians from hundreds of years ago. By that i mean, the concept of a 12 tone music system. It is insulting that they continue to push the tradition that music comprises only these notes, indian music for example, has many many more possibilites for melodic invention. To say that they are truly on the forefront of music, is, with all due respect, comment dit-on disheartening.

Except it doesn't, obviously. How can you justify listening to Dream Theatre when everything they base their music on is a lie? Supposedly progressive, they can hardly be called anything but regressive. Obscurity does not indicate virtuosity, let alone quality.
Go listen to something like Death Cab for Cutie if all you enjoy is the immediate sonic qualities, and not their underlying foundations.

Are you sure you didn't mean to put this in the Tool thread? I don't recall Dream Theater ever mentioning the collective unconscious nor any sacred geometry that they supposedly espouse. first off I want to say dream theater is pretty funky, and by funky I mean it in a good way, because they are rather sweet :chug:
ok but weeping guitar i think we need to get one thing straight  in quebec, which should be its own country only the anglos listen to pink floyd mostly, les francophones are all up in Gilles Vilnaughssfdsd (sp?)'s grill, like gens du pays, so don't try and pull a fast one, old pierre trudeau
anyway I think quebec should be its own country, its a nation of people with a seperate language, and a diversified economy and a large independent sentiment, besides their flag is better than canadas so
in conflusion: weeping guitar, I repsectfully disagree with your anti-sovereignty statement

if you liked Never Enough, you'll like Stockholm Syndrome. you might also like Hysteria and Time is running out (the part just before the chorus of 'these walls' sounds like a part of TIRO). thats all i can think of when i think about Octavarium

lol, I was just listening to my Octavarium, and was gonna come here to ask everyone else if they saw a heavy influence of Muse on Never Enough. The whole first half of it sounds just like Stockholm Syndrome... it doesn't help that James sings in the exact style of Muse's singer in it too... maybe he was trying to sound just like it. Also in Panic Attack, they sound like Muse at around 3:50, which is funny, because right at that point the vocals say "Hysteria" lol. Anyone else notice that?

I am just now getting into Dream Theater, I heard a few of their songs online and couldn't get enough of the 2 that I kept hearing off of their newest album so I went and bought it. I really enjoy the entire album and I have been listening to it nonstop since I bought it..Since I still am not fully into this band I do have a question or two.
Are all the vocals the same for each Dream Theater album? I really enjoy them on Octavarium? I am not sure at all, I remember downloaded thier cover on Metallica's Master of Puppets album a year ago or so and the vocals sound completely different than from what I remember, so I guess it's worth asking.

That was a live cover from a few years, and James' vocals weren't doing so great live until 2003-2004 after he injured his vocal chords 10 years ago roughly.

I'm pretty sure the real reason he sang like that was because they were covering Metallica, not because of his injured vocal chords. They seem to be fine (though admittadly not his best ever) on the LSFNY and OIALT live albums.
123, if the lyrics are Myung's
Myung has written so few lyrics you can hardly say that you only enjoy the singing in songs he wrote. Although I agree his lyrics were usually great, especially Learning to Live.
He stopped because during the SFAM sessions the band agreed they only wanted lyrics if they included melodies and everything that they would need for the song. When Myung did contribute lyrics JP, MP and KM had to work them into the song.

Dream Theater are't just 'any band'. you get 3 hours of intense playing from all the members (maybe not labrie). Theres not many bands that could keep me interested for that long in one gig. Also, they've got so much vary in their music so it's not 3 hours of the same style, Dream Theater cover so much ground.

Lord of Sword
09-18-2005, 08:24 PM
the only other dvd i've seen is live scenes from new york. quality wise, budokan is a lot better. the sound quality is better, and it doesn't look like it was recorded on a home video camera. the setlist isn't the best, mostly the 2nd disc of 6DOIT and ToT, while LSFNY has all of SFAM, aswell as A Mind Beside Itself, ACOS, and a couple of other tracks. budokan has much better extra features aswell, like petrucci's guitar world and mike getting people from the crowd to play drums onstage with him.
considering LSFNY seems more just like a live version of the album with a couple of extra songs thrown in, while budokan is more a proper live dvd, i'd go for budokan, as tempting as the LSFNY version of ACOS may be.

omg that's good. thanks, but on Never Enough, they clearly ripp off Muse's Hysteria. even the vocal part has Ballamy written all over it. Portnoy even admitted that Absolution was his favorite album at the time. silly

is death metal the end of metal (cos death metal, i think it sucks arse) or can we rely on bands like dream theater (if any more exist) to save the world from being overcome by blast-beat-and-power-chord-playing-screamo crap now that the old metal bands like black sabbath, deep purple and to a lesser extent, metallica have done their dash. Dream theater kick arse and they are all hugely talented. ne1 disagree?

There are plenty more genres still around other than death metal. Don't listen to death metal if you don't like it.
And with other bands sounding like Dream Theater...well, Dream Theater are prog, so try to get into other prog bands.

Dream Theater - Metropolis pt. 1 and Rush - YYZ got me into prog.
quite a lot of underground death metal is prog/technical anyway. i like death metal because you get a lot of good drummers, but some of the vocals like early Cannibal Corpse are funny.

please note that death metal is a genre that has a lot of skilled and studied musicians.
just because you don't appreciate it, doesn''t mean it's bad, or that it will be the downlfall of metal.
a top of genres with most skill:
Classical
Jazz
Progressive metal
(technical) Death metal
you could argue to fit Blues in there too

Although I'm no fan of Death Metal, you shouldn't dismiss a genre like that. Also, I'd recomend learning how to type...

Jazz is sometimes technical but thats if its learned
it kind of defeats the point though because its really all about improviseation what happens in Jazz sometimes is technical but it depends on what there feeling i think its a insult to Jazz to say it has the most skill when alot of it happens by accident.......
Classical is a hard one some of it i don't think merits much skill because its about following set rules and can be primitive because of the lack of instruments of the time
But on the contrary Classical composers such as Schubert broke the rules and strove for something unique as well as being very technical
i think prog is joint 1 with classical maybe
Classical has more technical note choice
but progs time sigs and ignorance of key sigs (and still sounding good) also deserve merit
guess we'll never know........

sure we'd love to do an interview via email. it would be best though if we could do it when we get back in late october as we're swamped with europe stuff right now. is that ok?
as far as bands, i have a lot of non-metal stuff to recommend: Ben Harper, Lyle Lovett, The Pogues, North Mississippi All-Stars to name a few. i try to be well rounded, you know?
I'm writing Mike Portnoy from DT tonite. i'll tell him you say hi!

Hey I just got introduced to this band and I already love them just from the little bits and pieces that I have heard. I heard Glass Prison and was pretty much blown away and I heard As I Am and I like that one too. The only other band that I have heard that is kind of like them is Symphony X. So I was wondering which should be the first cd I should buy for them. I read reviews on a lot of them and they all sound awesome. If it means anything, I kinda like heavier songs a little more, but it sounds like these guys can do anything well. So ya, didn't know if there is really an album that I should buy first, like with Metallica most people say to buy MoP first.
