when are they touring in new york or mass. i need to see them. the only bands ive ever seen in concert are metallica, tool, and apc (and some rapper guy who came to williams once, i forget his name). i really want to ****ing see dream theater

They should be touring North America with their Evening With... tour sometime around March/April '06, so you'll just have to wait a few months and then you will be able to see them.

I'm sure that Mike mentioned something in the Gigantour chat about coming to North America for an Evening With... tour. Just dig around the Portnoy forum and you should be able to find something about it. Dream Theater would be stupid not to tour North America to promote Octavarium.

nowitzki, you seriously like 8vm better than six degres? the song drags on for pathcs of like 3-5 minutes where nothing happens. it's like drum beat+guitar riff............same thing but with crash cymbal..........

you gotta love the transition from goodnight kiss to solitary shell man, top notch!

The point I was making was 8VM seems more like one complete song, where as I see 6DOIT as being several songs all put together. 8VM does start slowly, but its really cool the way the song gradually builds and builds until the climax with LaBrie screaming.

Oh, and its 24th & 25th of October for me, my tickets arrived yesterday :p

The Root of All Evil has been played at all but a couple shows. So you should defnitely expect to see that. They might play The Glass Prison, they've been playing that a lot at the more recent Gigantours. You'll also most likely see Panic Attack played. Other songs that could be played are Lie, As I Am, Just Let Me Breathe, A Fortune in Lies, Never Enough, Endless Sacrifice, Fatal Tragedy, and Home among a couple others.

Also, chances are VERY high that you'll see the Pull Me Under/Metropolis mix as the encore.

Do they ever do songs off Awake much at all live? I can't remember ever hearing a live version of any songs off that album, but I'm going to see them in October and would love them to play something off that album. I'd assume though that in recent years at least, James' voice wouldn't be able to handle a lot of the songs, considering he was so amazing on this disc. Hearing him live in the last few months though it sounds like he could reach most of those notes again now.

They haven't been playing a lot of songs off Awake at Gigantour. The only other song they've played from Awake is Caught in a Web.

But, if they play Lie, expect it to be ace. It was my favorite song of the whole concert. Amazing rendition.

Dream Theater was brilliant last night...no other word for it.

The lights dimmed, and the crowd started to stir...then some weird staticy noise came in. I had a hunch what the song would be...turns out i was right. As the first bells rang, the crowd went nuts...then that great bass riff comes in, and the whole band started The Glass Prison as their opener. One of the best openers I've ever seen, save for Symphony X's opener, Inferno.

Anyway, Dream Theater proceeded to play a sort of "greatest hits" set...one of the best setlists I've ever seen. It included, but wasn't limited to: The Glass Prison, Home, Lie, A Fortune In Lies (I think), Pull Me Under/Metropolis Pt. 1, As I Am, and others.

I think the best part was, though, when Portney brought out the drummer from Death onstage, and both of them proceeded to play Portney's drumset. They did beats from many different songs, including Hot For Teacher (Van Halen), Run To The Hills (Iron Maiden), a Megadeth song, and various others.

If you have the chance, definately catch DT on this tour. One of the greatest shows I've ever seen.

TAMA Drums Rule!!!!!!!!!!

TAMA drums also cost about 40 trillion pounds..

but anyway, i got my first DT album last week in france (they seem to have better music shops there), it was some really new one called Octavarium. i looked on amazon for it but they didnt have it so it must be pretty new i guess.... anyway, i thought it was pretty cool, much more coherant than i expected. i expected mroe pointless wankery but i was dissapointed (or un-dis-appointed :confuse:).

anyway, they seem to have a pretty solid rhythm and it seems to flow even with the wierd rhythms and time signatures. the drummer's good, to be sure, and he does a load of stuff i cant get near at the moment, but then again so do most pro drummers. to me it seemed a bit more accessible than tool. they also use more 'way-out' stuff.

hmm but anyway i really liked it, so i might get another. amazon couldnt decide which was best so i might go for liquid tension experiment or something...

There are many special things about LSFNY:

- It marked Jordan's first live album with the band
- It's the first time the band has released "A Mind Beside Itself" in its entirity on a live album.
- It's the first time a version of the complete "A Change of Seasons" has been available on a live release.
- The show itself lasted well over 3 hours, after which MP passed out and was almost taken to hospital

Yeah but Maynard James Keenan is a total moron, I really dispise him>_<, tool should have Dio!

Octavirium is awesome, the melodic chorus on The root of all evil reminds me of muse for some reason.

i couldnt agree more.

yeah well i think the muse thing is due to the harmonics with the 'dramatic' vocals, if you know what i mean, and the piano ( i am thinking of the right song, right?)...

anyway, the album in general does slightly to me... i seem to remember when muse were first emerging saying they could bring about a comeback in prog, so there def. is something there i think. anyway, i like both bands hugely.

by the way.. anyone... octavarium was my first DT album, and i like it a load, so what would people recommend me getting next ... (im probly getting a job in a call centre for the next 2 weeks, you get pretty big bonuses if you actually persuade anyone to buy anything lol, and if u recommend well i promise i wont phone u lol)

The set they played in New York was absolutely incredible, and the LSFNY CD is amazing. However I do find the DVD very dissapointing, half of the set isn't even included, and Mike Portnoy's directing is absolutely dreadful. The way it is shot is very boring, just one camera in front of each member, very few shots of the whole stage and the crowd, plus its filled with loads of cheesy camera effects that look pants. And then ther's the cheesy cut sences and acting to accompany the SFAM story.
Obviously still worth getting if you're a DT fan, but the DVD could have been so much better considering the performance.

They never played it live because it was entirely composed by Kevin Moore, who left shortly after the album was released. MP said they intended to play the Awake album in it's entirety ont he last night of the tour for it, but Kevin had left and it was his song, so they decided against it.

I personally think that's what makes DT an awesome band to see live, the fact that they can change their set every night.
LSFNY and Budokan have completely different sets except for one song, yet they are both amazing 3 hour sets. There isn't much DT that I don't like so I doubt any set would dissapoint me too much. Hmm, well maybe the following would:

Goodnight Kiss

ok
Dream Theater is a progressive Metal band.
featuring a guitarist, a bassist, a drummer, a keyboardist and a vocalist.
the songs are generaly quite long, and very technical
the vocals are clean, and mostly high in pitch.

I would recommend Images & Words as your first album.
it's there 2nd studio release, and shows the really progressive side of DT.
the album isn't all that heavy, and may sound a bit rockish even.

If I dig Scenes, what else from DT would I dig?
Metropolis Pt 1: The Miracle and The Sleeper, from Images and Words, alot of the music in Scenes froma memory is a progression on this song. And this is the story that Scenes From A Memory was written about. The entire concept from that album is drawn from this song, which JP wrote the story/lyrics of.
Also, you might like to try the A Mind Beside Itself Trilogy of songs from Awake. One of my favourite suited songs from DT. Consists of:
Pt.1:Erotomania
Pt.2:Voices
Pt.3: The Silent man
Also, what, to everyone was the first Dt album you bought? Also, what, to everyone was the first Dt album you bought? Mine was Scenes from a Memory about a month after it came out, then I bought Live Scenes From New York the Day it came out in the UK, which was the 14th Sept 01, I spent ages looking for a copy of Live Scenes with the "Flaming Apple" cover. But couldn't find it. I remember Scenes astonished me so much. It still is my favourite Dt album, alongside I&W and Octavarium.

My first DT album was Awake, great album and one of my favorites, but i dont have a clearcut favorite album by them.

James sounds so god-damn camp on the intro where he says "Just let me catch my breath." but yeah, it is an awesome song. The video they filmed for it is so cheesy it's laughable.
Basically "JP's lesson in guitar god poses."

The backdrop is the back cover of Images and Words, with the Pillars. Way cheesy.
I think that's easily their worst live album. The Keyboards are way too loud on The Crimson Sunrise and James's singing is way off the mark. My favourite song on there is Scarred, I thought they did that well, but I've never heard any other live version.

First one I got was Images and Words, still my favorite. I find myself having trouble getting into 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence. I don't know what it is about it. I like The Glass Prison, but I feel it goes on too long. Everyone seems to love the Great Debate, but to me, it comes off as such a blatant Tool rip-off that I have a hard time enjoying it. The entire second disc just hasn't caught on to me and I've had the album for awhile. I don't know, I need to give it some more listens.

So, my friend let me borrow the Live at Budokan DVD and the Live in Tokyo/5 Years in a Livetime DVD. My respect for the band has grown even more. It's amazing how much fun they seem to have playing all the songs in concert. I loved the part where Portnoy brought people from the crowd do drum with him, that was so awesome. Yeah they're DVD's could be better. The special effects on "Live Scenes from New York" look like one step above power point. I just got into Dream Theater maybe a month and a half ago, and I am in total love with their music. I heard about them because I am a huge Tool fan, and most places I read about Tool, I saw things posted about Dream Theater.

First CD I got was actually the Live at Budokan CD set that I saw at a WalMart late one night. I was with some friends, and was actually quite shocked to see something by them at a WalMart. So I bought it and give it a few listens, and fell in love. The third CD out of that set is my favorite from it.

I later purchased Scenes from a Memory and Octavarium. Scenes hasn't left my computers CD drive since then, been about 3 weeks now. I listen to it clear through, I just love how it all flows together as one big story. Very cool. I haven't really grown to like Octavarium too much, just nothing from it that strongly catches my attention.

So my current favorite is Scenes, though I am wanting to get Images and Words, and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. I am sure I'll like both of them. Also, as for DVD's, I also got the DVD set for Live at Budokan a week or two ago, and it really made me be in greater awe of them. JP does some pretty nutty fast alternate pickings, heh. Its just so awesome to actually see it instead of just hearing it. MP seems to be great at putting on a show while he's playing, with stick spins and flips and everything else, definitely a great performer and drummer.

Too bad I didn't really get into them in time to see them on Gigantour while it was in Ohio :-/ Maybe they'll do a tour with Tool once they release thier new CD (doubt a tour with both of them would happen though :-/ ).

It would certainly be an interesting show. They are almost completely different in style in everyway. Maybe the juxtaposition of the 2 band's sounds would create complete awesomeness. I'd rather see that than see Tool tour with Meshuggah again. I have no problem with Meshuggah, I think they are excellent musicians and not every band can name a song "New Millenium Cyanide Christ", but I guess they just aren't my cup of tea. I wouldn't mind hearing a song occasionally, but I didn't really think that they fit as an opening act for Tool. Anyone agree with me?

It's not really just that. Tool shouldn't have an opening act that is more agressive and heavier than them. I think Tool are better song writers, but they are really so different in style of music that I just thought it didn't fit at all. DT are also technically superior to Tool (although I happen to think Carey is better than Portnoy, both are great though imo), and I don't think they'd fit well with Tool either. I'm not really sure if I'm explaining myself well. It's just...I dont't think an opening band should outdo the main act in terms of playing. Plus, I think Meshuggah deserves to headline their own tour and I know Dream Theater does (they will after the Gigantour, I think). I can't really think of a band that would fit just right with being an opening act for Tool, so I think I'd just be happy with no opening act and a 3 hour Tool concert. :thumb: Of course, DT would be awesome.

I don't think you can really compare Dream Theater and Tool. I mean, I love Images and Words and I love Lateralus, but they are so completely different from each other that I wouldn't know how to critique them in the same way. They both achieve their goals, if you know what I mean. Their approaches to music are so different from each other. I don't know, I just love both bands. I got Train of Thought a couple weeks ago, I really really like everything on it except for Stream of Consciousness. The first four ultra-heavy songs are perfect, Vacant is great as well, but to me, SoC is an aggravating ten minutes I could do without. In The Name Of God is good for the most part.

I still think The Glass Prison is the best song they've ever written, I'd kill to hear that live. I think mostly, I'm a fan of their heavier stuff (especially stuff like Panic Attack, Home, The Mirror and others from Awake).
