yes, it's no fault on your cd or anything, it is supposed to be that way.
the lyrics are about live, and how fast live passes and how fast it can be over, that's why there's that sudden and abrubt ending ;)
np: dream theater- the great debate
EDIT: ow some one else already answered the question :p

TBH, Labrie, IMO is a brilliant vocallist, who's emotional voice is something that makes Dream Theater the great band they are...

I just got Awake. I previously had their heavier stuff but this one really delivers for what it is, Lifting Shadows Off a Dream in particular.
In the booklet though Labrie looks like Fabio and Portnoy looks like Ben Stiller when he was in Starsky and Hutch pretending to be the biker.
Intro for 6:00 > most.

Nonono (about the 6:00 thing). In my opinion that's the weakest track on the album, well apart from Innocence Faded.
Personally Awake's one of my favourite Dream Theater albums. It's dark and heavy and Scarred is my all time fav song by the band. I just love it.

vocal wise, awake is the most agressive, and it had great songs, so I sugegest you buy it.

I'm the same, when I first got Awake, I really didn't think much of it, but I went through a huge Awake time, and just loved the whole CD, I even chuckle at the annoying "6:00 on a Christmas morning" or whatever sample...

Yeah, that was the first song I listened to when I got the cd, and I was with my parents in the car. I actually turned the song during that part. I was liek oooh i hope the rest of the cd isn't like this

07-27-2005, 11:03 PM
heh, the intro to 6:00 never really bothered me that much. I remember the first DT album I got was Images and Words and I didn't really like it that much at first because I was just kind of confused with all the musicianship, over the next month, I pretty much listened to it everytime I played Halo 2 and I really grew to love that cd. Than, I bought myself Awake a few months later, having no expectations of it, and I really did not like this cd much at all at first. I mean, I listened to it, and I just thought it was really bland. But, as with many albums, the more I listened to it, the more I liked it. I started to hear all the great musical elements of the album and I really appreciate it now. I definitely think that it is DT's hardest album to really 'get', if you know what I mean. Very cool though. On a sort of different subject. Does anyone consider "A Mind Beside Itself" one song in 3 parts or are the 3 songs supposed to stand alone? Because they are definitely connected lyrically (obviously not Erotomania) and musically. Just wondering.
Mambuto_O'Mally
07-27-2005, 11:37 PM
Well IMO all of the songs are connected, but if you look in the booklet you can see that Erotomania and Voices are grouped together. Anyway if 'Awake' is the hardest to get into I'm set. I loved that album after just one listen, but I haven't listened to any music latley due to my **** ear ache. After work tommorow I'm going to listen to it again. :thumb:

I was just listening to 'The Killing Hand' off When Dream and Day Unite, can anyone clarify if there is a bass solo at the end of the song. The part i'm talking about is from about 7.45 onwards.
What is your order of preference for the Dream Theater albums?
Mines:
Scenes From A Memory
Images and Words
Train of Thought
Awake
Octavarium
When Dream and Day Unite
6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence
I don't have Falling into Infinity or A Change of Seasons, have to buy them sometime.
And one last thing, what is the 'Live at the Marquee' CD like. I've only seen it once and was wondering if it was worth trying to find.

I love this band and I love this album. I just have a question about the story in the album. I know the basic general story, but at the end on Finally Free, they have the CNN report part in the background and then the hypnotist says "open your eyes Nicholas" and Nicholas yells. What the hell is that about? i really don't understand what happens there. IF someone is nice enough would you care to type out the entire story in detail in case I'm missing something?
In quotation of this which was a thread, that should have come here first, i think it's a shitey end to an ace album, i have no clue what it's about.

The psychiatrist is Edward Baynes revived in the present, just as Nicholas is Victoria revived. So, as in the past (Beyond This Life and earlier in Finally Free) 'Edward' kills 'Victoria' at the end when Nicholas yells.

After DT ended their set, they came back out and started Cemetery Gates. James sang most of it. Russell Allen sang one of the more aggressive parts, as did the singer from Fear Factory. Mustaine came out and played the final solo. Anyway, it was amazing, but you'll all see it eventually as there were several cameramen on stage.

Oh, they have better then Train of Thought, alot better.
Images & Words, A Change of Seasons (Although it is really only one song, it's worth it), Awake, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, you could even say Octavarium is better then Train of Thought, but that's a bit of a stretch..
Scenes From a Memory is cool too, but if you're after more of a Metal sound, this album probably isn't the best, same as SDoIT though, the album is 2 discs, but there are only about 2/3 songs on it that could be considered Metal (But the whole 2 discs are brilliant).
This is all my opinion, maybe someone else has a different opinion, so you'd be best advised to wait for some more people to post their opinions. :thumb:

#5: Erotomania.

He actually does play a part in writing the songs, not just the lyrics. I can't remember how it works exactly but Labrie, Myung and one of the others, I think Portnoy, get together to work on the rythmn or something. I can't remember exactly but he does do something, and I'm sure he writes a lot of the vocal melodies.
And to answer the question on the last page about the report on the radio just before Nicholas is killed, that's about someone from the Kennedy family who died as they were recording the album. They used that sample just to show that that part of the album was in the present day, just so you don't get confused with all the switching between 2000/1928.

Anyone know if that's meant to be good? I'm not a fan of what I've heard from the solo albums of DT members so far, but I've heard some good things about it (as well as some pretty harsh criticism as well).
Craig-If you see Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From A Memory, I'd recommend getting that instead of Awake. The songs you mentioned are all good, but I regard that and Images And Words as clearly DT's best work.

If you're talking about JP's solo album? Yeah, I think it's pretty good, I read somewhere on MX, if you think Petrucci just shreds, and has no emotion, listen to this album, I think that sums it up pretty well, there is some shredding for sure, but there are also some really nice more emotional songs too.
He's got a really nice bassist I reckon, I dunno his name, but it's pretty cool.

I never used to think much of Awake. I like all the albums but I didn't understand people listing that as their favourite. But now I do like it a lot, especially James' voice. It also shows how diverse they are, I had the Mirror in my playlist not long ago, just before it changed to something off SFAM. My favourite off it is Voices, but there isn't one song on this album I don't like. It's just a different style, and probably the one most unlike their others (except maybe ToT) which is maybe why some people don't like it much at first.

To me Awake is one of their strongest albums. It may not start out great, but after Innocence Faded it really starts to shine. Scarred is possibly my favourite DT track just because of it's jazzy feel into great, heavy riffs. It works perfectly for me and Labrie is especially top-notch. Myung plays in The Jelly Jam.
it's a sort of proggish rock band with Morgenstein on drums.
I don't really rate his project high, way too poppy for my standards.
but it's good technical wise nonetheless.
they have two albums out.

Rudess beats Moore out of the water as far as technical skill goes, but I did enjoy Moore's songwriting a lot more than Rudess'.
and on top of that he contributed wonderfull lyrics.
so everyone who cares even a tiny bit about him should certainly check out O.S.I

I think that 'Voices' has some really amazing lyrics, probably my favourite penned by Petrucci. I agree about Rudess being more technically proficient, but I would rather listen to stuff with Moore contributing to it musically. I think that Rudess is more suited to stuff like LTE and his solo stuff than Dream Theater. I've still got to check out O.S.I, do Portnoy and Moore both play in that?

yes, Portnoy plays too, although he doesn't have is huge DT kit, ot does stuff as technical as DT, it's still great IMO.
there is a load of other musicians who have contributed to this cd, Steven Wilson from Porcupine Tree is one of them
he contributes background vocals on one song, but I think he gave some subtle hints on the songwriting department too, cause some parts osund quite PT like :)
Awake is awesome because of the whole Erotomania, Voices and The Silent man thingy. Scarred, Space Dye Vest, Lifting Shadows of a Dream, Lie (omfg solo=pwn) and almsot every other song on there.
Good songs make an album good.

Ah, this sounds promising. It would be really intimidating to be the bassist for JP's solo stuff...not only having to work with him, but also living up to Myung and his standard would be very difficult.

In my opinion, Falling Into Infinity is definantly worth downloading, and even buying. Falling Into Infinity shows the bands more "emotional" side, and has some great songs (Hell's Kitchen, Lines In The Sand, Trial Of Tears). Personally, it's one of my favorites.
That's exactly the same as me.
Myung plays in The Jelly Jam.
it's a sort of proggish rock band with Morgenstein on drums.
I don't really rate his project high, way too poppy for my standards.
but it's good technical wise nonetheless.
they have two albums out.
I suggest you check out Jordan Rudess solo stuff, esp. 4nyc which rocks really hard IMO.
it's a live recording of a tribute thing for sept 11th, mixed with some studio stuff, since the live recordings weren't enough for a full length :)
I'll have a look into both Ruduess' and Myung's, although, I really don't like Rudess that much :p

Half of the album is quality Dream Theater that you would expect from them, but the rest of the tracks are basically fillers. Very pop-y fillers in my opinion (for DTs standard). Songs like Hells Kitchen, Lines in the Sand and Peruvian skies are great. LITS is one of my favourite DT songs (along with Scarred) and also has another classic solo for JP.

It's an album which I'd recommend listening to if you like Dream Theater, but mainly due to the fact that I think being a completionist is a good thing. It's probably my least favourite DT album though, so I can't honestly say that it would be a good buy. I think that it was probably a good thing Kevin Moore left after it...it just seems to me that they'd started losing their sound a bit, and Ruddess gave them some more momentum to go and make Scenes From A Memory.
Moore wasn't on FII, it was Derek Sherinian

if you come into a Dream Theater thread and ask for their best 3 albums you will get a mixed answer and possibly spark of more debate amongst everyone.
My three are:
Scenes From A Memory
Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence
Train Of Thought
those are the more heavier kind of albums but they all still have prog stuff in them.

Taken from dtfaq.com-
TGP was written about the first 3 steps in the Alcoholics Anonymous 12-Step Program, and after SDOIT came out Mike said he would like to write a song on each album that continued with that theme. This Dying Soul is about steps 4 and 5.
The two songs share some lyrics and a riff, and there is also some small references to The Mirror, which is about the same subject.

DREAM THEATER’s Scenes From A Memory Turned Into Full Length Stage Play
BATS (Bexhill Amateur Theatrical Society, www.thebats.co.uk) writer/director Danni Segal has contacted BW&BK with the following news...
DREAM THEATER’s acclaimed 1999 concept album Scenes From A Memory is being turned into a full-length stage play. Adapted and directed by long-time Dream Theater fan Danni Segal, this is a prose play, not a performance of the CD.
The play runs for four performances from 17th - 19th of November, 2005 (that's 3 evening performances and 1 Saturday matinee) at the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill, East Sussex (between Hastings & Eastbourne in South-East England).
As this may be the only time this is ever done, anyone interested is warmly encouraged to come along and see it while they can.
Full details can be found at the BATS website at www.thebats.co.uk, which will be regularly updated as work progresses.
I'm still trying to decide whether it's worth the journey or not (about 400 miles for me I think).

I was kind of dissapointed with Octavarium. They really didn't live up to their name. I really like the CD, but it is nothing if you compare it to the past releases.
Same with me, but I don't like Octavarium. I don't like the 'new' Dream Theater.

I like the "new dream theater", but you cant compare it to their older stuff. You cant expect a band to sound the same forever. You need to allow for some growth.

Just bought Octavarium. I love it, it does seem a lot heavier then their previous work. What is you guys take on this.

It may be heavier than some of their previous works, but I think Train of Thought is heavier.

I like 8vm, but it's quite diifferent from early stuff.
I think in half a year I'll be able to give a final decision about the album :p
Images and Words is my favorite album by them and ToT my 2nd favorite, so I like both DT styles.
and I place 8vm somewhere in between in terms of heaviness.
in terms of greatness it's not near my top, although the title track is amazing

I bought Train of Thought Yestaday, It's the first Dream Theatre album I've bought, And I'm all new to the band, It impressed me massivly, the heaviness of the tone, yet all the exquisite(sp) playing of instruments
My favourite song is Either As I Am or Stream of Consiousness

Good choice, that was my first album as well. After that I purchased When a Day and Dream Unite. At first I thought it was average, but It grew on me a lot and I love it now!

When Dream and Day Unite is such an underated album. If you haven't heard it its is your duty as a Dream Theater fan to go out and buy it. If you aren't gonna buy at least listen to YSTE Jam, Fortune in Lies and The Killing Hand and see how great early Dream Theater is.

has anyone ever noticed that LaBrie attempts to do Black Metal shrieks on ToT?
on In The Name Of God right after the techno thing, at 7:20 there is 'the justifying violence, teaching hatred in the name of God' part, and if you listen closely you hear the vocals are dubble mixed, and LaBrie screams out his entire guts by performing some weird shriek like screaming, it's mixed in really soft, but you can make it out if you pay attention to it

he sounds hysterical while screaming though.

speaking of the ITNOG screaming, here's a clip from the recording of ToT video, where James is doing that Mustaine-esque "these tormented ghosts of yesterday" part, before he gets it wrong at the end:

'sacrificed sons' is a great track.
The lyrics are so cliche it's disgusting. The melody is quite nice but than the instrumental section kills off any type of emotion the song had.

sacrificed sons is really In the Name Of God part II, which is a broing attempt to a sequal. the lyrics to ITNOG are so much better.
the song itself rocks though (Sons)

Although some lyrics on 8VM I do love are during the title track during the Full Circle bit where the lyrics are made up from loads of classic song titles. Very cool.

Yep, written by Portnoy.
I think more than DT's other huge epics (ACOS, 6DOIT), 8VM just seems to flow perfectly and seems more like a complete song, than several song ideas put into one.
