Does anybody else enjoy surfing/bodyboarding/skimboarding? If so, how long?
I do all three, and I've been doing it for about 5 years now. I haven't been in competition yet, although chances are I might, since I'm in Surf Club this year at my school and I signed up for participation in competition.
If you've never done any of the above, I suggest you purchase yourself a board and get out and have fun. It's one of the best rides ever. . .and it surely helps relieve stress, plus it's a great time killer for those days when you've got nothing to do. :thumb:

I really enjoy it, but am not very good. The nearest place is a 2 hour drive, but when I'm there (tofino) I can play the planet smashers song "Surfin In Tofino" which is a rockin song.

I surfed until I moved to PA. I would have joined the surf club at my high school before I graduated but part of the hazing (shhh) was to wear a wetsuit all day and they put all kinds of crap in them, including sand.

I surfed up until about 8 months ago when I sold my board. Was meaning to buy a brand new one but I keep spending my money when I get it. I was using a 9'2" longboard, and wanna get probably the same again.

I surf whenever I go to the beach. I just use a rental board, seeing that I live 2 hours away from the beach and can only surf like 3 months of he year. I'm pretty good considering I can only surf like a few times a year.

Just a note: Surfing threads don't work well with MXers because A: Computers don't work well in the ocean and B) MXers are mostly nerds.

Please tell me you're referring to Newport Beach in Orange County (Los Angeles), California. . .cuz that place is **** awesome. Plus my bro used to live 5 minutes away from there when he was there for college.

Florida waters are so much warmer than the ones here in the Pacific though. Come here to California for better waves. . .and bring a wetsuit. :thumb:

Do u surf longbeach or wick (or elsewhere...) on victoria island??? I surfed there a couple years ago, not too bad. See all the attention ur local boys are getting in the surf mags, Raph and Sepp Bruhwiler?? Pretty sweet.
I surf mostly in FL., Sebastian, South Beach, Ft. Pierce area, but Im actually from Ontario, Canada. Pretty weak. I spent the summer in England, South West coast in a little surf town called Bude, in Cornwall, it kicked, I was living sooo close to the beach, I could check out the surf from my front door... really made me want to move to a coast! I hit up Newquay while I was there too, Fistral Beach. So thats my little surfing history, not too big yet, but its getting there! haha. Such a chill sport, I love just being in the water, one with the ocean, that bs, but its so true. Good times guys, I suggest u try it if u havent yet, especially if you are comfortable in the ocean, its another excuse to get in there... not that you should need one ;)

Very good guess, but no. He lived in Long Beach for awhile to attend an art school called Brooke's College (also about 2 minutes away from Cal State Long Beach).
I'm assuming you've also surfed at Huntington Beach. . .? That place is amazing, only there's wayyyy too many people (obviously). He's taken me up there quite a few times, and those waves are a lot stronger than the ones I'm used to here in San Diego.

Huntington has a lot of great waves, but if you want something amazing check out The Wedge in Newport. There are massive waves there because of the jetties and something else that I can't remember.

Oooh I haven't. . .I haven't been surfing since Aug/Sept though. Any idea where exactly this swell is gonna be at? Also, whereabouts in San Diego do you live? I live up in the north county area, inland in San Marcos/Escondido.
I've also been getting seasick for some reason. It never happened before, but during my last 2 sessions I'd start feeling super dizzy after about an hour out in the water. . .and I'd come back to shore having the urge to puke :(. It bugs so much, because right when I'm enjoying myself, I just wanna get out and lay in bed. Anybody have an idea on what's the cause, and how to cure it?

Well, its a NW swell so it should hit everywhere that isn't south facing.
I live in Poway (bummer...)
and i have no idea about the seasickness thing, never happened to me.

Ive been surfing for about 3 years, i live in Ventura County. I stopped going for a while cause i moved inland, so going riding was closer. but i now moved back closer to the coast, so i go more often. but if i had to pick between motocross and surfing, itd be motorcross. but surfing has its moments. favorite surf spot is pretty much all of orange county, and pretty much none of LA or ventura county, , go figure

what's not to like about Ventura? I've never surfed up there before, but have always wanted to.
well, first off, i short board and like ventura harbore or the point and most of the gold coast breaks (like rincon) are much better for longboards. second off, very very seldom can you go out without a fullsuit. finally, because most of ventura and LA counties are both south facing coasts, we always get f*cked over unless a b*tchin NW swell comes in (which is like never).
LA county, dont even get me started. only way up north (like malibu) and way down south (like manhattan beach) is actually surfable cause almost every other spot (santa monica, venice, redondo) are all polluted and infested with God knows what.
orange and san diego counties are the best surf spots in CA IMO. safe to say u can trunk it most of the summer, great swells, and generally good water. not to mention OC has the best chicks. :chug:
Aramis
11-20-2004, 01:47 AM
^ ahh, well i'll keep that in mind. i'm still going to go up there anyway just to see for myself :). i shortboard as well (6'5).
and yes, San Diego is an excellent spot. . .especially up in the northern portion in Carlsbad. the waves seem stronger in that part than the beaches more towards the south. . .excluding areas like La Jolla and such.
have you ever gone down to Mexico? i've only bodyboarded down there in Ensenada, and the swells were pretty good when I went during the spring, earlier this year.

bro, if u wanna go to mexico, one place: puerto escondido at the bottom tip of baja. holy sh*t. those waves hit you like a ton of bricks while ur paddling out, but once u catch em, u can ride em forever, or u can pretty much fly off the lip any way u want. like perfect shape, everytime. it gets pretty big on almost every swell 2. i almost drowned out there so i never went back, but u should check it out.

Hey sweet - where abouts?
I'm in Vic (south east aussie). I first grabbed a board about three years ago; got up and rode in by the third wave I caught so I was stoked. Bought a 7ft mini mal and I use it about every holiday, when I manage to get to the coast. If I lived near the beach I'd be out there all the time, but I don't, so I'm not. :(
I'm not that experienced yet... but you gotta love the feeling! :)

Most likely the east coast, in Kirra and Burleigh Heads. I've heard so many great things about that spot. We might also try to go to Fiji, but we're on a really tight budget. . .just going to Australia (for a group) is really expensive.
Do you live anywhere near the places I've mentioned?

Other than mexico I havent surfed any other country. the farthest ive gone is hawaii. ive never been that much into surfing to actually go somewhere far away solely for the purpose of catching the "perfect wave". in the future, if im traveling abroad with a wife and stuff maybe. but until i get hurt really really bad in motocross, i dont think ill make the switch over to surfing full time.

Which part of Hawaii did you visit? Last time I was there was about 5 years ago. . .and I went to the island of Oahu, in Waikiki (in Honolulu). I learned to surf there at Diamond Head beach, and also flew to Maui and tested out the waves over there. It was so great, especially for a n00b like me (at the time).

I tried surfing twice. The first time i took a lesson and when the instructor pushed my board I could get up and go in a straight line fine. The next day I went just by myself w/ a rented foam board, and couldn't paddle fast enough to get going on the wave :upset:
I do enjoy skim boarding/boogie boarding/body surfing a lot though. If I lived by a beach I'd probably go every day that it was nice out.
